    Cowboy Taco, all day long.

It'll change your life (make sure you get some dona sauce, and the brown salsa)

I give this place 5 stars because since 2007 when I first discovered this place in my neighborhood I have never been disappointed. I often wondered how much could they possibly be paying the employees because everyone seems like they care a great deal about the service and food at the restaurant. me and my coworkers as well as my family always get excited when we are going to Taco Deli.

The food is really good. papadulce, fish tacos, bison, and the Wednesday
chili relleno blue plate special are my favorites. My coworkers always order the queso especial. I try not to eat that stuff but holy cow I get sucked in having a few chips full every time.

My only gripe is that they are only open till 3pm and I am usually too late for eating there. However if it means that having shorter hours makes the quality and service what it is I am happy to deal with it.

This place is just lost on me.  I'll be strung up for this review because most of my friends love it.  For me, it feels like it's trying too hard.  It's a taco, does it have to be fancy?

If any of my friends would like to take me out to lunch here and pay, I'll give it another shot.  As it is, I went in, stared at the menu, and decided I really didn't want to deal with it.

I love going to taco deli! A wide range of taco's among other items on the menu for everyone's taste. I only wish they stayed open past 3pm. Their breakfast is excellent along with lunch menu as well..  My favorites are, the heather on flower, cowboy taco on double corn tortilla and bacon, egg, cheese, avocado, hot sauce.. The best part, they use organic eggs!!  Friendly employees as well.

As a child, I carried on a long-standing love affair with Street Fighter 2. I would liberate a few quarters from my mom's purse or the couch, swing by the local 7-11 on my way to school, and squander my youth.

I distinctly remember loving not just the gameplay itself, but the feeling of dropping in a quarter and having the game yell "A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS!" It made me feel badass. Well, a new challenger has appeared in the slightly-upscale-taco-universal, and it, too, is pretty badass.

I had seen the bumper stickers, heard the hype, but never actually been to a Taco Deli before. Could it unseat my beloved Torchys?  Wifey and I went, ordered 2 Cowboy tacos, 2 Mojo fish tacos, and (of course) queso. The staff was attentive, though apparently a nose ring and frumpy attire are required to work there. The bill came to just over $19.

WHOA. $19. For four tacos + queso (we didn't order any drinks). For those of you playing along at home, that's almost $10 a person. These had better be orgasmic tacos. The mojo was good; well cooked tilapia, though the entire thing was a little on the heavy side. I blame the garlic sauce for making the fish taco overly savory. Perhaps my years in L.A. conditioned me to a lighter, brighter style of fish taco. I dashed on the Habañero Pico salsa (which had an excellent citrus bite) and the whole thing came together nicely.

The Cowboy taco almost stole the show. After my first bite of the incredibly seasoned beef, I literally thought "This is the type of food that changes hearts and minds." It is really that good.

The variety and quality of salsas  were impressive. Bonus points for a pretty good queso (white cheese!), though I still prefer Chuy's and Torchy's, in that order. Absolutely no complaints about the food or service, though I left feeling that I could've had a similar meal at Torchys and saved a few bucks. After all, we are in a recession, I've gotta see that value!

Finding someplace new to have breakfast, you been to one taco place, you've been to them all right? WRONG! I cruised in and had some breakfast tacos at this location. I ordered potato and bacon tacos and a Peru coffee. Yum! The coffee appeared to be from free trading coffee and the tacos were so yummy. I wasn't prepared to find the unique way of the way they made their tacos. I read Papas and well, I know that means potatoes, different places have their interpretation of what papas are and I was surprised to see that it was like having mashed potatoes in your taco. It was so yummy!!! I enjoyed it very much, the potatoes were seasoned and had green onions, which almost made the bacon boring, but it made beautiful music in my mouth.

The staff was friendly and very helpful, not rushed, even with a breakfast rush crowd. Coffee was great and hit the spot on a cold morning, the place was clean and a great ambiance to come in, pull out the laptop and enjoy a nice breakfast!

Unique.  Creative.  Tasty.  I try a different taco every time.

This is a solid fixture in the work lunch rotation.

The only drawback:  long lunch line.  Goes with the territory.  Order ahead by phone for carry out to save some time.

    No Coke!  Pepsi!

I love tacos.  (get the immature giggle out of the way)

I've lived in Texas my whole life so I feel like I've seen and tasted tacos in every tortilla and combo of ingredients but even I was blown away by what Taco Deli had to offer.  I ended up getting the Cowboy Taco (holy damn).  I don't like guac, but even I couldn't deny how great all of the ingredients collectively added to the fiesta in my mouth.  My good friend has been telling me for years to check this place out but I never have until just the other day.  I try to live without regret but I kinda felt a little regret not exploring this places menu sooner.  In addition to the Cowboy, I got the Akaushi Picadillo.  I'm not sure what the hell Texas Wagyu beef is, but I do know its freaky delicious.  My only disappointment was there weren't enough jalapenos, but I can handle that being the worst part of the experience.

Their Frontera Fundidos are awesome.  The only downside is that they close at 3.

I would go alot more if I could get dinner.  I'm not sure about the business philosophy behind closing at 3 and missing on the dinner rush, but I imagine they would make a ton more money staying open later.

I'm taking it that they could careless because they make a killing anyways and don't have to have everyone work long hours.

    Wow!

I love mexican/Tex-mex food.  Love it.  I could eat it at every meal.  So I was a little guarded at first by all the changes their menu had from what I was used to seeing at a mexican restuarant.  And I'm glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.

I don't recall excatly what I had, but it was very tasty!  Lots of different flavors combined to make an amazing meal .  The ceviche was awesome!  WIth a kick of spicy!

    For sure, try it!

Taco Deli has some of the BEST breakfast tacos in Austin.  They use organic eggs in their cooking and they use extremely fresh ingredients!  They also have the most variety in taco options.  It is great to be able to change it up and try something unique!

    I highly recommend this place.

    This place is divine!

My favorite is the Cowboy taco- the combo of ingredients is delish and you can never go wrong with guacamole in my humble opinion. I also love the Pork Mole taco- lots of deep flavors.

Another favorite is their queso. A little on the spicy side with a nice kick and good cheese - not that neon orange stuff you get at alot of places.

As far as service, this place is pretty good. Whenever I've gone, there is always a line, but the cooks manage to fire the orders at a pretty quick pace.

My only grip is their hours! I've only been able to come here a handful of times since I work 15 miles from any Taco Deli location during the week, plus Saturday mornings. My only hope is to fight the Sunday lunch crowd or wait for a day off  during the week(like today!)

    Overall it's pretty good!
The fish tacos are my absolute favorite (never thought I would say that) and it moves quick. They have lots of options but it's good enough that you could try something different every time and still be happy with what you got. And there are specials for everyday of the week. Though I would ask them to go easy on the onions... I like them but, each time I forget to ask they put a ton on there.
Works well for the gluten free and vegetarians as well!

Tacodeli vs. Torchy's Tacos.  Tough decision, but Tacodeli wins out for me.  When I have guests in town, I always take them here.  Every time, I get strange looks when I tell them we're going to grab tacos, but they all understand why after they take that first bite.

The scallops tacos are my absolute favorite (only on Thursday), but the Cowboy taco is a very close second.  Both are a perfect blend of flavors and fresh ingredients that's like eating a slice of happiness.  If you're craving a cowboy during breakfast time, order a Vaquero and add sirloin.  Yum.

With the new renovations and expanded seating area, it's much easier find a seat inside.  I know i'm in trouble when the staff knows me by name and my order before I've said a word!

I'm not sure what all of the hype is about.  But perhaps it's because of my dietary needs/requirements.  The service was super fast. Wish they had more innovative vegetarian options, though. Red salsa is to die for. Also, there are not a lot of healthy options or any sort of custom mix-and-match offerings.  You get what you get.  At least it was cheap, fast, and hot.

So on a business trip to Boston, a fellow out-of-towner told me he's visited Austin several times. (Austin/Boston...I know) As the conversation continued, we started talking about this place and until today I haven't taken the time to explore this establishment and their fine tacos.

Today I can say I have! After one taco, I'm a Taco Deli believer! What really won me over in addition to their tasty tacos, was the hot sauce. OH YEAH.

My office ordered a bunch for us this morning and when I got the email, I got up, probably a little too quickly and made my way to the kitchen. I choose my taco and opened it up to pour on the hot sauce not knowing which was which with the selection of 4 different sauces. A co-worker of mine walked in and shouted, "watch out, the green one its crazy hot and now, my sinuses are cleared". SCORE.

I'm a hot sauce girl...the hotter the better even if my lips are on fire. Taco Deli's green sauce is definitely one of the hotter one I've tried and it mixes sooooo well with the tacos.

They use quality ingredients you can taste starting with the organic eggs. The flour tortillas are nice and thick and can handle loads of hot sauce. ;)

I can't wait to try some of the others. I love this place, and I'll be back!!

Newly enlarged, with a brighter look, more seating and a better flow, this taco store is still cranking out great tacos with tasty sauces on their own schedule, refusing to stay open past 3.

Yelp's map location is WAY off though, showing it to be 1.2 miles South of where the store actually is, i.e. the North-East corner of Burnet Rd & Gracy Farms Lane.

Do not be fooled by the map, and you will not be able to check in here unless you get your tacos to go and drive 1.2 miles South of Taco Deli, turn east on Brockton and into the Amplify Credit Union parking lot then check in there, since that's where Yelp thinks the tacos are.

I wonder if you can get a Mole Taco in the drive in teller?

The answer to the Taco-Deli vs. Torchy's question isn't an 'either or', the answer is simply 'YES'.

I enjoy the variety that Taco Deli offers and their prices seem to be somewhat lower than Torchy's.  That being said, Torchy's still sets the bar for creativity in their taco creations.  Neither will leave you disappointed, however.

Taco Deli is one of those local places that tries to use local grown ingredients - Organic and locally sourced.  This includes their eggs and fish - right down to the warning that the tilapia used in their fish tacos has been replaced with red drum and may have bones because it is not commercially processed.  I like that.

I like hot food but am unimpressed with their Habanero sauce.  Plenty of heat.  Not a lot of flavor.  Their next sauce (a green sauce) has great flavor and enough heat for most folks.

My four stars are based on how the staff was dealing with the lunch time crowd.  Frankly, they seemed overwhelmed.

Definitely not my favorite breakfast tacos.  However, the place was PACKED on a Sunday morning with a constant flow of business, so clearly I am in the minority.  This location is poorly set up on the inside and very hard to maneuver around the poorly placed/spaced tables and chairs.  For an establishment that is so busy, they should get someone to redo their dining room.

As far as the food goes the breakfast tacos were not what I am used to.  The migas was boring, lacked filling and flavor.  The potatoes that they use on their tacos are thin runny mashed potatoes.  The bacon and avocado tasted good.  They have 4 sauces--each on hotter than the next.  The hottest--habanero--overpowered the flavor of the food.

My husband liked the tacos, but I do not plan to return for breakfast, though I am looking forward to trying them for lunch--Thursday they have a scallop special that sounds good.

Ahhhh, I love you Taco Deli for opening a north Austin restaurant. Are there better places in town for specific types of tacos? Sure. But overall, I know I'll be happy after a stop here.

For those needing inspiration of a vegetarian persuasion, stick to the portabello or breakfast tacos, I don't really care for the others. If you're carnivorous, PLEASE get a cowboy taco. The tenderloin is so moist and delish... I'm drooling right now thinking about it... And it's not even 7 am yet!

The Food tasted great and with such a wide variety of Taco's I am planning on going back and trying them all.

The staff smiled although I could tell they were rushed because of massive quantity of people that were there during lunch.

The Atmosphere was great, I do not recommend going when its packed if you are claustrophobic. However I will say that the majority of their clientele seems to be programmers or professionals from the surrounding IT companies.

I suggest sitting out side to enjoy the breeze and shade... (and the lack of noise you would find inside.)

Bison tacos? Catfish tacos? Pork belly tacos? Scallop tacos??? It's TOO MUCH!! My taco senses are overloaded!

Has my quest to find a worthy adversary to the indomitable Torchy's Tacos finally come to fruition?

For their part, Taco Deli has not made things easy for me; but alas, quests are not meant to be easy. First, they cleverly designed their website to be ABSOLUTELY USELESS; very non-mobile and non-Firefox friendly. Second, they stealthily placed their North location into some sorta Bermuda Triangle of navigation. Follow the Yelp map and you will be summarily FOILED (they must protect the scallop tacos from the unworthy masses)! Forced to regroup, we followed a tip from Steve B.'s Yelp review and finally found our way to the taco promised land.

Now the hard part; which of the dozens of unique yummy-sounding tacos will be chosen to do battle? I went with the Bison, the Mojo Talopia, and the Catfish (curiosity got the better of me). But wait! Yet another challenge. Which of the 4 unique sauces will tempt me? Quickly eliminating the Mild and the Habanero (duh!), I grabbed the Medium (pretty good), and the creamy green spicy "Dona" sauce. The dialogue went like this: The Wife: "watch out, the Dona sauce is supposed to be really hot"; Your Hero: "wow, this sauce is really good..(short delay), OUCH!".

The tacos (see photo) were all pretty good. Head and shoulders above most, but ultimately failing to reach the lofty pinnacle set by Torchy's. My favorite of the 3 turned out to be the Catfish; but eat it quickly, before the river of sauce\grease turns your whole basket into mush. The Bison was also a worthy contender.

Will I be back?  Yes, often.
Is the Dona sauce my new favorite?  Hell yes! (and ouch!)
Will I ever choose Taco Deli over Torchy's?  Nope!
... And so the quest continues.

My favorite taco joint in Austin.  *the only reason I'm giving it a 4 and not a 5 is because of their hours, they close by 3pm everyday and that sucks.*

I've come here over a dozen times over the last few months and every taco I've had [and I try them all] has been fantastic!

I'm a big fan of their "taco[s] of the day", I've had just about all of them and all of them are delicious!

The Guacasabi Tuna is the best taco I've ever had [only served on Fridays]

They use fresh produce and meat and a good amount of it is local, which definitely scores them bonus points.

The staff is on point, they're quick, efficient, and pleasant to deal with.

The lunch hour is nucking futs, but it's seriously worth waiting in line for, no joke.

If you like tacos...if you've had torchy's tacos and like it there.....then definitely go here, better quality, better flavor, better experience.

I'm obsessed and you should be too.

Another reminder, they do close at 3pm, so make sure to get there for lunch!

This place is pretty great.  Looks like they remodeled recently to accommodate more tables and make ordering a little smoother.

I ordered a fish taco and the little one ordered an egg and bacon taco with a side of beans.  She devoured the beans and bacon and most of the tortilla so I know she liked it.  I loved mine and it was gone pretty fast as well.

I had the breakfast tacos before from Jo's and wasn't crazy about them. They were solid, probably four stars for the price and potatoes.

I decided to change it up a bit and for a snack got the breakfast taco with potato, eggs, and sirloin steak. "Boner jamz" is the first thing that comes to mind. My girlfriend got potato, eggs, and sausage and probably wanted to trade but I pretended like I didn't notice and ate as fast as I could.

The only drawback to this place was the wait. I got there at around 11:00, ordered in 2 minutes, but waited maybe 15-20 minutes for my two tacos. They were busy, though, on a Saturday at around noon.

While waiting, I also heard there is a pork belly taco which I have to try some time. Great breakfast tacos here.

Still loving you!  Lately, it's just gotten better and better.

The heathfulness of the food quality is worth the extra expense.

Wonderful employees, fresh food, commitment to environment preservation, fabulous coffee...need I say more?

I've been here a few times now as many of my coworkers swear by it.  And I can see why, it's quite tasty.

I had the Blue Plate Special - one pork taco and one sirloin.  Both were very good.  My favorite part is mixing and trying the different sauces, some of them have the perfect amount of heat on them.

The only nitpicks were the rice took some getting used to, it's a different flavor and texture and at first I wasn't too keen on it but i soon found that I had eaten all of it.  Also, there's a ton of people here and barely anywhere to eat but luckily we found a table at the ideal time.

Will go again, huge menu, I may even like this more than Torchy's because their menu is smaller.

Taco Deli has been feeding me for many years.  The food is fresh and healthy, and innovative.  I have recently begun eating vegetarian at lunch, and all their veggie options are delicious.  I especially LOVE the Papadulce taco - roasted sweet potatoes and pepitas.  YUM!  Also, the Heather is not to be missed.
I try other taquerias, but all you can get for veggie options are beans and cheese.  Taco Deli has actual vegetables to choose from!  What a treat!

Maybe you fellow yelpers can help me.  Do I just have bad kharma?  Possibly.  I've secretly loved Tacodeli for years but haven't posted because it's already too darned crowded up in here!  Lunch is insane.  I try never to hit between 11:30 and 1 because there's little-to-no parking and it's ridiculously packed.  That said, the food here is PHENOMENAL.  The salsa dona is amazing and spicy and is something you should definitely try/
Easily I could eat these tacos daily.  Three of their vegetarian tacos rank in my Top Ten Tacos of All Time list and their chicken and steak fundido are amazing.  Shrimp tacos not to be missed.

So here's why the 3 stars: Inconsistency not in food quality but as in: you may not receive what you have ordered.  Why is my order wrong 2 out of every 3 orders?  It's consistently inconsistent if you know what I mean.  I'm tired of asking to have my tacos remade, especially for breakfast. This is true for dine-in and take-away but it's especially irritating with take-away.  I don't order anything complicated, I've asked the cashier to repeat the order, when they call your name they verify your order so what is the problem? I'm tired of it and will be on hiatus from Tacodeli for a while.
If you order take-away here, please check your order.  This was a problem prior to and after the remodel.  Here's where my review ends.  Below is my divorce letter to Tacodeli.

For years you've ensnared me with your wicked salsa dona but I must bid you adieu.  Years have passed and I have not strayed.  Not to Taco Cabana, not even Juan in a Million.  The breakfast taco fire in my soul has been quelled only by the hot, steamy foil wrapped packets of love from your tender hands.
Weekly I have darkened your door, salivating patiently through even your mid-life crisis (your interior decorator may have blinged your blang but I kept the faith that you wouldn't change, you'd never forsake me).
To my car I would gleefuly sprint, breakfast taco and creamy green salsa in hand, knowing that soon I would fill my very body with your goodness.  Arduous was the three minute drive to my office!  I mustn't devour you in my car! No, I must be patient.  Unwrap your foil to unveil the naked surprise inside in the privacy of....my office.
At my desk I could think of nothing but slathering my egg, papas and bacon on flour tortilla with that delicious spicy green magical salsa dona and greedily savoring each bite until mere crumbs remained.  Our exchanges could continue until the end of time and I would be the better person for it!
But then came the day when after unwrapping that steamy hot foil, my heart first cracked a little bit.  I couldn't believe my eyes.  What has happened?  My precious, perfect taco! It can not be.  Someone has substituted you for this godforsaken concoction resting on my foil!  Don't you care for me any longer?  Have I done something, somehow changed that you no longer seek to please me?   I was so mad, so angered that you would treat me so callously that I ate it! I ate every bit of it and I wept for my loss.
And so it continued; the distance between us growing.  No longer would I dance through your door, no.  I would stoically walk to the counter with every modicum of grace I could muster.  Chin dipping just slightly, I would longingly gaze at the cashier but with shame, dip my head a little more and then mutter my order.  Cast aside, I would fondly remember our previous exchanges.  Then, brown bag thrust in my hand I'd wonder -what could it be? What is waiting for me, are you giving me what I deserve, what I crave, do you love me again?
    No.  Mere egg and cheese.
Once, I spoke up. Once I called out to you asking why you had forsaken me, why you no longer cared!  I asked for my rightful egg, bacon and papas when all I was handed was whatever you wanted to give me.  What was my reward?  Bacon and cheese in a corn tortilla.
This was the last straw.  I have wept for our love and I will weep no more!
It is with great sadness that I must announce that I will no longer pine for you.  Our time has faded as has the love I had for you in my heart.  It will be difficult, but I will carry on.
