While not the best sushi I have had, it was definitely good enough.  Prices were fair, and the eel was pretty damn good if I do say so.  Good atmosphere, and a friendly staff, but there were far too many small yuppie children running around.  It made me feel uncomfy when I dropped the f-bomb a few too many times.

I will come here again.  It doesnt hurt that I live about a block away.

Solid, dependable, reasonably priced sushi and, super nice staff. We came early and brought our not-so-neat or quiet kid and our waitperson didn't skip a beat. We were seated at a distant table in the back, amongst other not-so-neat and quiets and that was just about right. Not the best sushi I've ever had but left happy and will definitely return.

I have a bit of nostalgia for this place because it was here that I had my first spider roll and it has been the spider roll that all subsequent spider rolls have to look up to.

Much to my rather sheltered dining companion's horror my spider roll came out first on its own plate, crusty thin legs sticking out everywhere - it was a study in gorgeous chaos. The delicious crispy fried legs were still searingly hot and the roll crunched and crackled in my mouth. The flavor was fantastic and I keep coming back just for this.

The other food is consistently good and their prices seem on the high side but then most most in the Bay Area seems overpriced.

Dude this place is GREAT! We ate like kings on a super budget. Get the real sushi..

- soft shelled crab: order *just* the crab dipped in tempera sauce and fried. who needs all that rice?
- grilled lobster tail. $11 for lobster tail? Come on now... it was delish!!
- black cod nigiri: tender and fresh
- ocean trout nigiri: a little fishy but still very tender. Not filmy and it was easy to bite into
- grilled eggplant nigiri: this is a winner here. definitely order this
- spanish mackeral nigiri: talk about yum. I have had some really fucking fantastic spanish mackeral and this was like 8/10 and like $5 for 2 pieces (versus 10/10 for $15)
- zaru soba: hand made buckwheat noodles. big serving... they served al dente which was lovely.

We had a few other things... I guess not as memorable. Anyway, I'm sort of a sushi snob and would come back here... for the money, you're getting a GREAT deal.

Tachibana is a pretty decent place with some unique dessert specials from time to time. It's got some good surprises like udon and soba that is actually pretty good. The service was attentive and friendly. It's OK price-wise, so I would give it 3.5 stars for that because I am super spoiled by the wealth of good Japanese food in the Bay Area.

Oishi!  A comfortable Japanese-owned (rare for many Japanese restaurants these days) neighborhood restaurant where the owner, wait staff, and sushi chefs are all very friendly.  The fish is fresh and the place is clean, two prerequisites for eating raw fish.  There is a good selection from which to try, and they also serve many of the standard noodle dishes, Soba and Udon.  We have been going for years, and they have always maintained their standards.  Give it a try!

A friend treated me to Tachibana's last night and it was a decent experience.

Their gyozas are very tasty.  We had the california rolls (okay), spicy tuna handroll (nori was waaaay to rubbery), spider roll (okay), tempura (okay), unakyu (unagi + cucumber, avocado....okay)....

So the only real winner were the gyozas.  Everything else was just okay.  Ok service, pretty clean inside....

Nothing special.  I'd go to Coach Sushi though.

We ordered take-out from here.  The service was quick and friendly.  The place was packed (mid-week), and people were waiting for tables.  The sushi was ok ... not bad, but also no great ... just ok.  The price was reasonable ... a well rounded dinner for two for under $40.

Unfortunately, this the best sushi we've had in the neighborhood ... still waiting for that mind-blowing sushi experience in Rockridge.

The food is mediocre.  I was really surprised that so many people ate here after tasting their so-so sushi, it's not even that cheap!  The decor reminds me of the 1980s.  Nothing particularly stood out and I would not come back here again.

First time there and stuck with sushi. Huge slabs o' fresh fish - tried a couple of the specials...the sea trout was off the chains! Oh, and the barracuda wasn't bad either. They have my favorite maki sushi which you don't always get elsewhere - the natto maki (an acquired taste which non-Japanese rarely like) and the ume shiso (which my dinner companion said was so salty it upped his hypertension levels!) - but we also ordered the usual maguro, sake and unagi, as well as a tempura shrimp roll. Even Himself couldn't finish that last piece (we ordered a lot!).

All in all, excellent food, excellent service, excellent ambience and, of course, the company was excellent too!

Definitely one for Mumsy to try...

After passing by so many times and wanting to try tachibana I finally got my chance! So we arrive there and notice that there was a few people in the waiting area, but since we already came from another sushi place we decided to wait... plus it wasn't as bad because there were a bunch of tables and spots at the bar opening up.  The dcor of tachibana was a bit more casual than one would expect from a Japanese / Sushi restaurant. The bar was long and accommodates quite a few people.  Personally, I enjoy eating sushi more so when in front of the chef.  On a Friday night during prime dinner hours it was about a 15 minute wait before we were able to be seated.

It took a little bit for the waiter to come and take our drink order and then any type of menu order which one of the items was forgotten about and had to be repeated, but no biggie.  Most of the other items were ordered directly from the sushi chef and came out mighty expediently at that = more food to cram down my throat in a shorter amount of time YESSSSS. We tried a few rolls and I ordered a bunch of ngiri (sake, hamachi, maguro, white tuna toro, albacore, unagi) first thing I noticed was that the amount of fish given on each piece of ngiri was plentiful..... very thick.  I know some people do not like it too thick, but I honestly liked the amount of fish they gave with each order and was quite satisfied. It also helps if the fish is fresh, because no matter how thick the fish, it wouldn't matter if it was not fresh right? The unagi was nice and tender, the sake butterrrrrrrry, the white tuna toro and albacore very flavorful, and the maguro was well... like maguro! We had also ordered the fried tofu which was good and not overly or under fried.

The guy sitting next to us was a regular, because he just knew every single person behind the bar and even seemed to know the waiters and bussers.  He didn't order anything in particular, but instead let the chef serve him whatever he felt like creating... and might I say that whatever he was dishing out to him looked REALLLLLY GOO REALLY REALLY GOO.  He even offered me advice on how to impress my girlfriend at the sushi bar... haha.  I'm definitely going to have the chef create something for me next time I try tachibana which I definitely will try again.

All in all a great experience besides having an order forgotten...

Tofu
Salad
Ngiri (sake, hamachi, maguro, white tuna toro, albacore, 3 x unagi, 2 rolls)

total bill for 2 = 67 with tip.
Food = yum

The only good thing about this place is the service. The food was mediocre, although the rice was clumpy and dense. It CERTAINLY was NOT worth the 15-20 dollars I paid for the combination plate. Eating at this place made tme frustrated. I felt cheated out of my money because the prices suggested that the food would be good, but it was terrible. The sashimi tasted weird. The salad was drowned in dressing (some of it was actually floating). What the hell? I'm never going back.

WHAAAAT? *like Parappa the Rapper, when he fails a level*

Here I was, excited one Sunday evening at 8PM hoping for a new sushi experience and hopefully one I can repeat over and over again.

My brother's fiancee tells me it's great, so I want to trust her taste and give it a shot.

Jolly Roger and I decided to order some nigiri.

it was all wrong.

the nigiri was cut really awkwardly.

The worst part of it was the rice. it was packed so densely, like they grabbed a fistful and squeezed as hard as they could. It weighed a ton and the ratio was completely off.

I was only able to choke down two pieces before I just peeled the fish from the top of the rice. it was horrible. the fish wasn't all that great, but it wasn't gross or nasty although JR felt the fish was a bit unfresh.

I didn't even notice anything else, like if the place was dusty or not, or if there was water on my nigiri plate, but the 1,000 ton rice ball totally distracted me.

I might give it another shot in hopes that they don't prepare their food like that all the time, but I have to say that my first experience here really turned me off.

Solid sushi you can count on. In an atmosphere that is pleasant and quiet. (Well, the lighting kinda sucks).

The service is OK. No finesse. But no rudeness either.

Their tempura soba soup is very tasty (albeit a bit salty) and their sushi is fresh and well prepared. Yummy mochi.

Not the best sushi in the east bay (I think Kirala is better) but rarely is there a long wait, and the space is much more spread out so when you do have to wait you don't feel like your impeding anyone's flow. (Like I often feel at Kirala).

I used to come here once every couple of weeks with my then BF, but for some reason we would always get into heavy relationship talks in this restaurant, without fail. Must be something in the water...

Everyone has their favorite sushi place. Tachibana would have to be mine. True, I've only been to Kirala once and Uzen a few times, but each time I go to Tachibana, and it's been several times over the past dozen years, I'm always impressed.

Granted, for dinner it's more expensive than someplace like Sushi-Ko or Sushi Village (both decent, less-spendy places), but it's worth the money when you feel like spending it.

The fish is absolutely fresh, and the special menu items are unlike other sushi places I frequent. On a recent trip there, they were offering king salmon, trout, and red snapper, among other things I can't remember.

A couple of the special cooked items: if they have it, get the lobster-tail yakitori, and if you or someone in your party isn't into sushi, get the pork shogayaki. Both of these aren't things you're likely to find at your regular sushi restaurant.

I went for lunch recently, and it was surprisingly easy to get a seat (I don't work nearby, so perhaps that's normal). Dinner can be quite crowded, though I believe they take reservations.

It was fine, but not fantastic or great. None of the three of us were satisfied with our meals, but it was okay. Don't think I'll go back. They don't have many roll options. The seafood quality was good though.

With all the sushi places around nowadays, it's nice to find one that sticks out above the rest.  I think that the main thing that has struck me the times that I've eaten here is the freshness of the fish - it's top notch.  They also have a fairly decent sized menu with some nice original (or at least not as common) items - the various types of scallops are my favorite.  I also like the large-ish sake menu (although I am by no means a sake expert).  The service is friendly and attentive, the decor pleasant, and the overall atmosphere is comfortable.  They also have a pretty cool sushi bar if you should choose to sit there.

My favorite Japanese restaurant in the East bay.  Both the sushi bar and the kitchen produce delicious food. Besides good quality fish, they also make good spider rolls. The soft shell crab is lightly battered and crispy. Be sure to order something from the special board.

If you like  tempura ice-cream, you must try the green tea one at Tachibana. It is served with a tangy, fresh-tasting raspberry sauce that complements the dessert very well.

Tachibana is a good solid Japanese restaurant that serves okay quality food.  Decor is definitely unadorned and somewhat lost in the eighties, but what it lacks in interior, it partially makes up for in it's dishes.  The sashimi pieces in the chirashi dish were each sliced pretty well and quite fresh.  Tenzaru soba dish was okay.  Nothing to write home about, but not typically a dish that has a WOW factor.  Boil noodles, pour store-bought sauce into bowl, serve along with some grated Japanese radish and pieces of dried seaweed.  The WOW factor comes when good quality noodles are used or homemade sauce is served.

Service was quick and friendly.

Overall, a good neighborhood place to goto for good traditional dishes.

Tachibana is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Berkeley/ Oakland area.  I have not tried Kirala or Uzen yet but I have been to Kiss, Sushi House, Kansai, Koryo Sushi, Mijori, and Get A.  From these various sushi joints I have fallen in love with Tachibana.  The quality of the fish is fresh and I have never had to wait for a table here which I think is amazing for a restaurant on College Avenue.  The room has a nice elevated ceiling with soft ambient lighting and there is a long sushi bar with five happy sushi chefs ready to take your order.

My favorite items on the menu are:
Agedashi Tofu- Nicely fried with a light tempura sauce and bonito flakes as garnish
Sake Sampler- Great for people who have not tried too many sakes before.  I personally like both nigori sake and second sake (I forget the name of it).
Sashimi Assortment-  The quality of the hamachi, albacore, and sake are great!
Spicy Scallop- I don't usually order scallops but these melt in your mouth.
Uni- Need I say more?
Ikura- Order with quail egg.

This is a great place to take your family or bring a date.  Every time that I have come by for dinner the staff has been very nice and are good at recommending specials that are not on the menu.

Tachibana is becoming one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the EB. It's not there yet because it doesn't have the charm or hominess of my current fave, but it's close in terms of food. The service is always attentive and friendly. There's enough space between tables so you don't have the waiter/waitress' ass in your face. But you might be into that, so the tables are also not too far apart. They cater to all tastes....

The prices are pretty reasonable in my point of view. Dinner for two, tea (which is free) and an app for under $30 is damn good in my opinion. Maybe I'm just skewed from too many DAT dinners. But anyway...

The sushi is of a good quality. A good selection. The udon is pretty good. Some people I've been with think it's salty, but personally I don't. The tonkatsu is good also. There are other typical Japanese dishes as well. Also several vegan sushi options.

Haven't been in about a year, but service was spotty EXCEPT when we had Jimmy.  Jimmy is awesome.  Fish quality was always very high, and I have a weakness for albacore toro and hamachi in particular.

Now that we live within walking distance of Angel Fish (dear lord, why didn't I think to account that into our budget when we moved over here?), we don't make it up to Tachibana much.  I had nothing but yum there, though.

There are many reasons to love sushi (healthy, flavorful, portion control). But there are so many more reasons to love Tachibana.

The fish - Fresh. You'd think this was a given. But I've had some yellowtail at places I won't even speak of that taste like the tread on an old pair of sneakers (believe me, I've tasted tread and it's not good). The salmon is awesome, which I have found to be not the case at most sushi places.

Blanched spinach salad with miso dressing - They've hit the right balance with the dressing. Sweet enough, but not overpowering, and they put just the right amount of dressing on, enough to enhance the flavor of the salad, not drown it out.

Hamachi kama - The appetizer sized broiled yellowtail collar is a great main course, with accompanying spinach salad and miso to round out your meal.

Tempura - Crispy but not super greasy. You can eat it without having oil drippings run down your arm.

Kid friendly - Yes, you read right. This place is super kid friendly. Of course they have high chairs and boosters, but they put a table cloth underneath your little one's chair, so you don't feel guilty about all the rice and crap that your kid got on the floor (have you ever tried picking up sticky rice off carpet - it's not fun). Plus, for little kids, they have a cache of kid cups, SpongeBob, Princesses, etc., to keep your little one happy.

The one suggestion I have: I always order amaebi (sweet raw shrimp) and they deep-fry the fishheads. But I prefer them deep-fried in a little more tempura batter than they do at Tachibana. Still tasty and edible, but that's what would make it a perfect experience for me.

Tachibana is an easy call - everything is good.

It's practically our kitchen and dining room - we live one block away and are there at least once a month, if not more.  Living in a Mecca for restaurants is great fun - within walking distance we have Oliveto's, Zachary's Pizza, Pearl Oyster Bar, Grasshopper, Garibaldi's on College, A Cote, and Tachibana stands even with the best of them.

Tachibana is very Japanese and "pure," like Kirala.

No weird combinations, just straightforward Japanese cuisine done expertly.

A good night for us, is to sit at the sushi bar, order Miso soup and a salad, then Maguro & Hamachi sushi, followed up with a bunch of stuff from the Yakitori or a la carte menu.  We order everything at the same time, as the Yakitori and a la carte items take more time than sushi, and arrive just as we're polishing it off.

This is perfection.

Yotsumi - charcoal grilled skewered chicken, "Blazed Duck" - slices of roasted duck served at room temperature, a grilled rice ball slightly burned on the outside with a teriyaki-like sauce (crunchy and yummy), grilled corn on the cob, and a cold spinach salad makes for a great meal.

It's probably more expensive than ordering a set meal, but very satisfying.

If you're really hungry, or nineteen (like my son), get the Bento Box - there you get choices of Teriyakis, Sashimi or Tempura and Caifornia Rolls, salad, Miso soup - the works.  It's a good meal.

Tachibana does everything well - their Ten Zaru Soba, cold soba noodles in dipping broth with Tempura, is perfect.  As is their grilled Mackerel, or Nabeyaki Udon.

I am open to different cultures opening and operating Japanese restaurants, but being Japanese American myself, it's reassuring to go into a place owned and mostly operated by Japanese.  This isn't the only or absolutely the best way to do it - but we've gone into other Japanese restaurants (my wife was born in Tokyo) and when she asked for more grated Daikon (Japanese giant white radish) it created confusion.

This wouldn't happen at Tachibana.

Tachibana sits right on College Avenue, opposite Zachary's Pizza.  It has a small waiting area, is usually crowded at night, and has a competent, pleasant, contemporary (though getting a little old) interior that is comfortable and welcoming.

Genuine Japanese chairs (they're the only ones who could do such skinny, gloss enamel chairs that are amazingly comfortable) in purple (!!!!) actually work in this place.  The sushi bar is large and grand, like it should be.

I'm not a connoisseur of sushi, but like it, and know when I don't like it, and I like Tachibana's.

A few years back I met the owner, a gruff man who identified himself as "Nagano."  I heard that he passed away awhile ago from cancer, and the family was running things.  They are doing right by him: things click along at Tachibana, quality and service maintained magnificently.

Tachibana is nice in that is not pretentious, and is informal and comfortable enough that many people bring kids and babies there.  Probably in order to make the carpet last - but notable is that the staff always spreads white cloth napkins under babies chairs to keep stains off - it's noticeable and kind of a nice touch, caring about the kids (let them spill all they want) and the decor.

Kirala is probably better for an adult meal in the absolute sense: the dishware is beautiful, the food more elegant, no kids in sight, but the wait and the crowd makes you think twice about it sometimes.

This is not the case at Tachibana, an easy fit for everyone.

Always fresh fish! (get the uni when it's in season) and a great robata grill.  But don't sit in the front if you are with a date, otherwise you'll come out smelling like char.  They also have a great selection of sake.  I've never had a bad meal here.  One of the best Japanese restaurant in the East Bay.

My BF and i ate here and we give it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.  He noted that the service was actually very good, unobtrusive but friendly, and our perfect green tea (i always burn my mouth) was always kept full. I had the Poki Hawaiian tuna roll, which was great - white tuna with just a bit of spiciness. My Hamachi-green onion (somehow I can't NOT order this roll) was a little stronger-tasting than usual, but it was the flavor of the fish, it was still quite fresh. Ginger-mackerel roll was great, and the bf got a delish seared marinated tuna and a pork entree that came with awesome broth all over some "veggies" (read: cabbage). Also, very good miso soup.

Not too expensive, especially for the quality of the fish and the service. We will come back.

Boy,  do I regret not trying this place sooner!  After all those times of walking past this nondescript Japanese restaurant on the way to Zachary's or some other Rockridge spot, I finally decided to try Tachibana.  The sushi is very fresh and delicious.  Reasonable prices for such good quality.  The bento is the best value on the menu which includes miso soup, salad, rice, 6-pc CA roll and a choice of two items: sashimi, salmon teriyaki, tonkatsu, tempura, (and two others, I think).  Service is prompt and polite.  I'll definately be back!

Service was very good.  The fish was okay.  (Fresh but variety lacked the wow factor)  We arrived right when they were closing though so we had to rush so that the staff could get home.  I wouldn't recommend doing it that way.

Since we arrived at the closing hour we picked our usual favorites in a hurry - Chirashi Sushi for my husband and a variety bento box with Sashimi, Tempura, and California roll for me.  My husband is very particular about getting a "fresh fish of the season" and top notch varieties when ordering chirashi, especially at the price of $23.  For example there was no Ikura or Shimesaba or Kohada.  His assortment just had 2 Tai, 1 Maguro, 1 Hamachi, 2 Tako, 3 Tamago (Egg) Yaki.  Chirashi is supposed to feature the premier assortment of sashimi pieces and these above don't fall under that category.

If we happen to have the chance to go again, we'll see if it is better the next time around.

Visiting from out of town, bringing the number one son back to Cal.  Looked on Yelp to find a Japanese restaurant for a going away dinner.  What a great place!

The sushi is outstanding and the dinners we ordered were excellent.  Our waitress was friendly and actually a Japanese native from Osaka.  Definitely the place to go for Japanese food in the East Bay.

I used to get this delivered with the roommates [back when I still had roommates].  I have always been pleased with the food.  I can totally recommend it, but the reason I'm giving it 3 and not 4 is that with out the roomies pushing for it, I just don't seem to come back here.  It's not that the food is bad, per say......but, there are so many good Japanese places in the Bay, I rarely eat here anymore.

Tachibana is good for volume, chunky sashimi and geared toward American mainstream tastes and large portions. Fast service. Good if you are in a rush.

Decor- blue fluorescent lighting, open room. Generic big asian-style.

If you have more time, you might like to try the cozier Mitama (main room) or the bigger pricier, Kirala.

I can't believe I am only just now yelping Tachibana! This sushi joint, which is kind of a cheap word for Tachibana, is the best the East Bay has to offer. In fact, I would venture to call Tachibana a Sushi Mecca, a Veritable Palace of Raw and Cooked Japanese Delights, and, if I may, The Best Little (not really, but humor me) Sushihouse in Oakland.

Tachibana's fish is fresh - really fresh. Like, the salmon seems like it's melting in your mouth fresh. Like, it's so good that you want to roll around in it fresh. Well, maybe you don't, but I do. Enough about the sushi though, let me move on to Tachibana's other delectable delights: The miso is stellar, the house salad and dressing rocks, the grilled fare is amazing, and the entrees are pretty darn alright, too.

I would have to say that the worst thing about Tachibana is the parking, but if you BART or live close or know the super secret parking spot, then you won't have to worry about that.

Oh, and if you like garlic and lots of it, you MUST try the Garlic Albacore*.

*Not recommended for first dates, especially not when you're on a first date with a vampire and you want to get lucky.

My fiance and I are regulars here and usually sit at the bar to watch the chefs do their thing. Can't go wrong with the sushi  ... everything is fresh with generous cuts of fish. They have a great menu for the grill and other cooked foods that are worth trying. Highly recommend the sauteed mushrooms (which says a lot considering that I usually have an aversion to mushrooms). The ambience is very down-to-earth and family-friendly. It's hands-down our favorite sushi restaurant that we have come back to time and time again.

A few months ago I was aimlessly driving the streets of the East Bay when I happened upon Tachibana. I had driven around what Dave Chappelle calls the "Welcome to O@kl@nd B1tch" section and somehow wound up in Rockridge. How fortuitous!

I had worked up an appetite and happily sat at the bar. Unfortunately, sushi is better appreciated when moderately, or even very hungry. I, was  uber ravenous.  I remember a strong desire for Shrimp Tempura. It is the item that stood out among all others as it is what ultimately topped off my tummy.

I do not recall disliking anything.  The decor was calm and relaxing. The service was pretty friendly as it should have been as it was not crowded that Saturday afternoon. I remember particularly enjoying the tempura. It has been quite awhile so I am giving them the fourth star as a benefit of the doubt.  I do think I shall return and will update my review at that time.

Everything about this College Avenue sushi spot is right. From the light, flavorful dressing on the salad to the big cups of tea to the friendly and efficient service to the exceptional California roll.

The atmosphere is airy. Nice spot for lunch.

I am not yet a zaru soba expert, but I had it here and enjoyed it quite a lot!
Tachibana, you made my day!

Everyone I bring here, adores it. They say the sushi is sublime, and I already know the staff are fantastic. I love it, I go here almost weekly and guess what - I don't even like sushi. I love their salad, and some of the other dishes, sure. But mostly I like to watch my friend's (the sushi lovers) faces when they first try the hamachi, salmon, red snapper and unagi. Your happiness is my happiness ... and I really love the salad.

I'm surprised by all the four and five star reviews of Tachibana - maybe it's improved recently, but the half a dozen or so times I've been I was disappointed with the sushi.  All of the cooked items were good, but when I go for Japanese, sushi is almost always my focus...  if you want robata grill or cooked entrees Tachibana might be the place for you.
