Only 1 round trip on TACA but I'm sold. It was not without surprise but they managed to work everything out nicely so I'm pleased.
Context: Trip to Peru for 7 people total
Route: SFO to El Salvador to Lima (and back)
The Pluses:
. Planes are good, seats comfortable
. Free and relatively good food
. Good onboard service
. Very accomodating with re-seating, easy to talk to customer service
. Managed to reroute all 7 of us on different flight when our Lima - El Salvador flight was delayed by 7 hours. An extra stop in San Jose CR
was the price to pay to be back in SFO on time. Worth it.
The Minuses:
. Entertainment system is outdated (screens drop-down from the ceiling ... programming is set, not individualized)
. Unexplained 5 hours delay and a little bit of confusion at Lima Airport
Overall a nice change from the US airlines. Still below most Asian or European airline but better than I expected.
I have flown to Nicaragua and El Salvador a total of 7 times with TACA. It's always an adventure before I even get to my destination as they have consistently overbooked, and screwed up seating on almost all of my flights. TACA does not enforce the carry-on rule with any sort of consistency, so if you don't wanna check your bags yet still would like to bring a shitload of stuff with you on your trip, you may very well be in luck if you fly with them.
Good points are, they are for the most part on time, and have yet to lose my luggage which is more than can be said for Continental(so sad when not losing someone's luggage becomes a compliment). I also find that the customer service folks in the Managua office are a fairly pleasant lot. Oh and TACA no longer charges for food which was a VERY smart move on their part.

I've flown to Central America three times. Twice with United, once with Taca. They now have a code-share, so when you go to buy a United flight, you might get one leg on Taca. And what a leg that is. When you get to the airport, you will be introduced to Central American-style bureaucracy. and 20 minutes per person to check in. and seats that get lost in the system. and people checking in 500 lbs of luggage. Customer service? The sound quality is terrible on the line and you get a different answer from everybody. And the funny thing is that anyone who flies Taca says it's way better now than it used to be!
On the other hand, they fly American-registered Airbuses, and everything is done as it is in the US - just because the airline is based in San Salvador, that doesn't mean it's going to crash!
