    Such an amazing find!
One of the waiters at Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao referred me to Komoda when "I asked him where can I go to get something sweet...but something that's REAL-good?"
This shop doesn't look like much from the outside, but on the inside is a family-run local bake shop.  Their Portuguese style donuts - Malasades - were incredible. They also sell donuts on a skewer...their dough is so fluffy, pillowy and soft it's like eating a glazed cloud. I will miss these donuts anytime I think of a donut and I'm not on Maui.
Come earlier in the day and you'll have the chance to walk out with one of their amazing pies, cakes, or box of cookies. If you're celebrating anything on Maui, Komoda Bakery would be an excellent choice to up the ante to your celebration.

Pastry lover eager for comfort carbs after a canceled horse ride on the crater.  Cold, oil soaked treats were underwhelming...only surpassed in disappointment by the health concerns of the establishment.

    High expectations dashed.

    Parking, not really a problem.
Make sure to get there early, the lines get long!  Though I don't know if the wait would be.
Food: Stick donut was really good!  Probably really bad for you, but the pieces are easy to tear off of the stick making this less of a mess.  Donut quality better than Krispy Kreme.  Cream puff was also good, the outside was nice and flaky but the filling wasn't anything special...tasted like Jell-O  pudding.  Butter roll...was I supposed to heat it up at home or something?  It was really dry...

If you love pastries, you have to try Komoda Bakery in Makawao.  The stick donut is incredible, the guava malasadas are excellent, the cream puffs and cocoa puffs are light and filled to the max, while the An Pan was so fresh.  The Azuki Pie was so good I ate it in a couple of days and reminded me of what my Auntie used to make.  Of course I had to buy some goodies for the flight home.........

Okay. I am a baker and have a lot of pride in my baked goods. Everything I bake must be from scratch. My husband and I drove out to this adorable cowboy- town to try the "amazing" stick donuts. As we were eating the gooey goodness, a food critic sitting next to us just told us that these donuts were made from a mix. I was conflicted. I do not believe in mixes, but hell, they were tasty. So- if you don't mind baked goods coming from a mix, then you will love these. I just don't think I will be back unless they come up with their own recipe. Also- Yuban coffee is served. You have been warned.

Holy cow! Komoda store is the mother of all donut shops. The donuts have a great unique taste that you can't get anywhere else. We swear this place is beloved by the locals cause everybody that saw our box immediately had this gigantic smile on their faces and told us how much they love their donuts. We tried their famous stick donuts thinking that they were just going to taste like regular donuts but we were wrong. They are much richer than the average donut and are a lot less messier to eat. Pretty inventive stuff here. The donut is even made into five separate sections that are super moist and doughy. Their guava masadas had us wishing they would open a shop in our hometown. Everything we had was very tasty. We wouldn't recommend that you eat them everyday but they are worth making a trip upcounty to eat!

I take it back, well almost. The donuts are still super greasy and not very good but I had this coconut turnover thingy that was simply delicious. Very hit and miss but if you get there early you might get something good before they sell out. Otherwise you will end up with an old donut.

Still reminds me of a dirty bakery in some village.

This place has bomb bags of butter rolls!! We bought a bunch of goodies (3 cocoa puffs, 3 cream puffs, 3 guava donuts, 1 anpan, bread pudding) got back to the car heading back to the hotel, and literally only got half a mile down the street before killing the bag of rolls and deciding to turn back to get 3 more bags...and a red bean pie. Delicious! The rolls - little bit sweet, nicely fluffy and definitely freshly baked.
This place is a must go to! Happy eats!

CAN YOU SAY, YUM! Yum will be my new favorite word for this place.

Donut on a stick - YUM!!!

    Custard-filled Cream Puff - YUM!!!

Price - YUM!!! (cash transactions only).

As you walk in, there is a MINI-MART store feel, Then, you look to the left and all the YUMMY goodness is staring in your face. I pass the Donut on a stick. I pass the Cream Puffs. Then, I approach the Lady behind the counter. Like a little kid at a candy store, I stare up and ask, "One Custard-filled Cream Puff, Please!" She places my puff in a paper bag. I walk outside and take my first bite.... KA-BLEWY!!! YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY! I think its nutmeg that give it that what-the-YUMMYNESS is that?! I take a bite out of my friend donut on a stick. YUMMY! That store is full of, yes, YUMMY!!

    that's all...

If you ever go to Maui... go up country and hit up Komoda!!

After you come down from Haleakala sunrise.... stop by Komoda!!

If you want a donut on a stick... JUST GO TO KOMODA'S!!!

The only reason why I gave them 4 stars was because the people who own it do not really stick to their store hours and they need to GET BRIGHTER LIGHTS... because its sort of DARK and DINGY when you walk in... But my SNL loves this place and so do I!!! I'm a big fan of their STICKDONUTS!!! Heehee :)

Donut on a stick? why not, cause it's so much better than getting sticky fingers!
We had cream puffs (chocolate and regular), azuki bean buns (fried and baked), and coconut danish twists. The buns were your normal azuki buns. But the plain cream puff was soo good! The vanilla custard was so delicous that I could eat spoonfuls if it alone. Stick donuts were golden crisp and yummy. Coconut twists were our favorite and sadly we only bought one to share. After coming here we ordered a dozen coconut danish twists to bring back home (if they make it on the plane w/o being devoured) and will pick up some other flavors of the donut-on-a-stick.
I love the little grandma's that work here!

Came here on the way home from seeing Haleakala.  It's in a small town.
    We tried the following:
Donut sticks - Alright, lots of dough and lightly glazed.  Not too sweet but convenient to eat because it's on a stick.
Guava malasada - lightly sugared and lots of filling.
Cream puffs - Let's just say lots of cream, sorta reminded me of a custard filling.

Good, not amazing donuts (maybe too much build-up?).  Got up way early to get them piping hot a few times, but they were always very oily (on a stick or no), and not as flavorful as I'd hoped.  Komoda's does have great bread and interesting flavor combos in their pastry, though.

Very cute little store: Nnce people, good vibe - wish the donuts were more my style.  Definitely worth stopping i for a freshly baked roll and cats-in-hats pics, though, and hell, you might as well get donuts on a stick while you're there.

I love Komoda Bakery! It's an old, local business, but it never disappoints! When back for the holidays or school breaks I try to take at least one trip here.

My favorite is their stick donuts.  There are about 4 donuts piled onto a stick.  You can buy them in pre-packaged packs or individually.

I am also a big fan of their butter rolls! Yum! They're soft and very buttery!

Aside from the two they also sell cream puffs, long johns, glazed donuts, cakes, and many more pastries and baked goods.

Be sure to go early to the goods that you want because they run out by early afternoon.

I have been here on both my trips to Maui. It's sort of like a shabby little general store with a bakery. It's very nostalgic though and looks like it hasn't changed for years. Also looks like the products aside from the baked goods are dusty. LOL

The baked goods looked ok. Everytime we come here though we've usually just eaten, so we only had a few things, like some donut holes and a cream twist I think. They were both decent, but they are a dark brown color, almost as if they have been fried a long time. I am not sure if this is attributed to the dough or the oil they used, but I think it's a distinct sort of flavor. Everything seems quite heavy though. I much prefer Homemaid bakery (manju makes me man-drool) but then again I haven't tried EVERYTHING here and it's possible that all the good stuff has likely sold out. Stuff is cheap though so you can try many things.

Still, it's a place I will always visit when I am in Maui, because we like coming upcountry and also visiting the stores in Makawao so a stop at T. Komoda Store will just be one of those must-dos. :)

I brought my girlfriend to Maui for the first time last February and one of the places I told her she had to try was Komoda's.  My girlfriend, not being easily impressed, was skeptical when I raved to her about how good the stick donuts were.

Let's just say when I returned to Maui without her for a week in November; her only request was that I bring a mac nut stick donut back to NYC for her.

    Maui Honeymoon Review Series

    ----------------------------------------------

The T. Komoda Store and Bakery is located in the beautiful Upcountry area of Maui in the town of Makawao. This area of the Upcountry is where locals refer cowboys as Paniolos. Approaching the downtown area where the T. Komoda Store & Bakery one will note the old west feel to the area.

The outside of the T. Komoda Store & Bakery and inside feel as if you've stepped back into time say Pre-World War II. Don't let the antique feel of the store fool you. On our way to Hana my Hubby and I stopped here. We found out it was cash only- so we crossed the street at the local grocery store and used their ATM machine. When we got back we inquired about their Malasadas. For those of you who are not in the know, Malasadas are a Portuguese confection (pieces of dough deep fried and rolled in sugar). The lady informed us they ran out (mind you it was only 11 in the morning). So we picked up a doughnut on a stick, one cream puff and a pack of the macadamia nut shortbread.

The doughnut on a stick was light, fluffy and just the right amount of glaze. The cream puff baked to perfection filled with a vanilla cream that was just the right amount of sweetness. The macadamia nut shortbread was the best we've ever had- buttery and just plain wonderful.

The day before we left Maui we purchased:
    One dozen cream puffs
    One dozen regular malasadas
    One dozen guava malasadas
Two bags of macadamia short bread
    One coconut pie

Their malasadas are good but the guava ones are great. The guava ones taste like you're eating a fresh guava. The coconut pie had the perfect crust and it was filled with lots of fresh coconut. Thank goodness we were tipped off by the locals about this place. Its seriously ranks as one of the best bakeries I've been to ever.

Our family on the mainland were seriously happy with the baked goodies we brought home. The locals know where its at- T. Komoda Store and Bakery- MMMMMMM Gooood! Let's just say it was worth the drive from our home in Kapalua for their delectable treats!!!

    Noelle's Notes
They are closed on Sundays and Wednesdays.
They run out of malasadas quite fast.
You can call your order in advance.
They are a cash only operation.

I should have tried the creme puffs. Instead we tried the doughnut sticks, maple bar, and black bean filled doughnut. This was following a harrowing 3am drive up a volcano, so anything could have tasted amazing. Fun to try something different, but didn't get what all the hype was about.
Again, I should have tried the creme puffs..

I'll try to be unbiased with this review... considering we got there and they had two cakes left.

Sis wanted to get the nanny a birthday cake and she remembered seeing this review at Yelp... since we were going down from Kula (Lavender Farm) it was on our way to Paia... why not.

We parked... we walked in... saw they hardly had any baked goods but the two cakes... uhm... we didn't really know what to do. We ended up getting the Kobash chocolate cake and a candles... and we left.

Store is definitely ran down... reminded me so much of the provincial scene in PI.

Anyway, the cake was eh... it was odd. The chocolate frosting wasn't really frosting... the cake itself was eh... we cut it and chucked it. It was just for decoration I guess.

I would want to check it out again next time around to taste the donuts... but for now... I probably won't recommend getting the kobash cake... or something sounding like that...

after reading about this place on Maui Revealed, had to come here to try some of their baked goodies. I came here after I saw the sunrise at Halakela.

This place was hard to find, since it is so non-descript. After driving up and down the street twice, was I able to find it. The place reminds me of my grandma's little general store that she had many, many years ago in Hong Kong. You can see that a lot of the locals shop there for the baked goods. They also sell general stuff besides baked goods.

I had a cream puff and some rice crispie cookies. The cream puff was ok, but I've had better, creamier ones at places like the WI State Fair. Cookies were ok.

I should have tried one of the masaladas, but I didn't  :(

Overall, this place is ok, not spectacular. If I am back in town again, I might try to stop by to try their masaladas, but it is not something that is a "must do

I must be the only person who does not think the cream puffs are good...

After many years of trying to get to Komoda Bakery to try their "fantastic" cream puffs, I finally made it today.....

It was VERY DISAPPOINTING....I did not think the filling was even cream!...it was WAAAAA too sweet.  I bought 2, took a bit of one and immediately stopped eating. I gave the other one away.  The puff was soft and nothing to write home about...sorry folks,  but would not buy it again.
The people there weren't even friendly...Cute old building with the neighbor island atmosphere, but didn't feel any warm spirit....sorry....

After a chilly visit to the top of the crater, we headed down the hill and into the cute town of Makawao.  We split the stick donut and the chocolate cream filled eclair. Yum!  The store itself is very dingy and there's piles of empty containers and an old lady folding up rags/aprons.  A true family business.

Such a cute mom and pop place that reminded me of old Haleiwa.  An old fashion convenient store with a built in bakery, it definitely rewinds you into the past. Add the little grandma who helps you and you can't help but feel like a child again.
But the bakery is why everyone travels 20 minutes out of Kahului, up the slope of Haleakala, and into Makawao at the crack of dawn.

I'm sorry, but I'm a donut snob.  I have eaten donuts near and far - I have tasted perfection and I have tasted failure.  Komoda-san's donuts are in between.

I came here at 7:45am hoping to get the donuts hot out of the oven.  I bought the regular glazed, the stick donut, the azuki donut, the biscuit, and the malasadas.  All of the donuts were premade and just sitting in the window - cold and sad looking.  Visually, the stick donut is impressive - 5 mini glazed donuts on a stick - kinda like you're eating yakitori.  However, the taste is the same as the regular glazed.  I like donuts because they don't taste oily as if they were deep fried.  You forget that you are eating something deep fried, and that's why it's so delicious; it tastes natural, fluffy, and sweet.  Komoda's donuts lack that sense of superficiality.  It tastes deep fried - the oil lingers on your fingers and lips.  I'm not an oily kinda girl - not my cup of tea.  Sorry, I still say that Bob's Donuts (in SF) is best.

The Malasadas was strange....Leonard's is the standard for how a malasadas should taste and feel.  I didn't even know what to think of Kumoda-san's malasadas.    Kind of like a cold, slightly hard, old fashioned donut with lots of sugar and cinnamon all over it?  Oh, and don't forget the oil.  Leonard's is warm, fluffy, sweet, inviting....so opposite!  The azuki donut was the best of everything - good quality azuki inside and fluffier than the others, but still nothing to rave about.  I was disappointed, but based on reading other reviews, I see that many others like Komoda's.  That makes me happy because it's a small, local business and I would hate to see it go under.

Go to Krispy Kreme and save Komoda's for me. A visit to Maui is never the same without a quick stop at Komoda Bakery.

My lil Bro lives in Maui and whenever he comes to Oahu for a visit, he knows to drive up to Makawao to my favorite bakery in the world and bring me dozens of butter rolls on the plane. If he doesn't, he aint getting picked up from the airport and when he finally get's to my house via TheBUS, he'll be in the dog house for the duration of his stay.

    Top 5 picks at Komoda's
    1. The butter rolls
    2.  Long Johns
    3.  Stick donught
    4.  Chocolate Dobash cake
    5.  Anpan
    6.  Malasada's
    7.  Fresh Baked bread and cream puff's (tie)

Ahhh, we flew in to Kahului at 10:30am, went straight to Makawao, and they were out of pretty much everything, Cream Puffs included, at 11:30am.  Oh well, the Stick Donuts were as great as promised, and the An Donut (a Malasada filled with red bean paste, not the Anpan) was awesome.

We tried to come back a couple times over the weekend, but they were closed both times.  Next time, I'll know to book an earlier flight, stay closer than Lahaina, and actually drag my vacationing ass out of bed before the early birds snag all the good stuff.

Mmmm..doughnuts...*drools* I don't really indulge in doughnuts anymore, they're totally awful for you, but I'm sort of shrugging it off while I'm on vacation. These doughnuts were really good, I'm totally glad I indulged. We got 3 of the on-the-stick type, ( 1 coconut, 1 glazed and 1 macadamia nut) plus 3 cream puffs. The cream puffs were doughy and heavy and really not all that great. The lady said they were famous for them, but I think the doughnuts are really what shine here. Fairly priced, and a great stop off after doing sunrise up at Haelakala park.

Our guidebook raved about this place so after zip lining at Piiholo Ranch we came to Baldwin Street to walk around. The shop front is easy to miss and we were looking for it. We arrived at the bakery which is also a general store around 2pm. The guidebook says to get there early in the morning for the freshest items. When we entered the store it appeared that everything had been picked over. I was a little disappointed that there were not cases of goodies to look at.

The hubby found a bag of malasadas. So we purchased those and opened the bag up immediately. The donuts were good but not he best I ever had. I was a little disappointed since the guidebook had raved so much. Perhaps we tried the wrong thing or you really do have to go first thing in the morning? Not sure. The malasadas at Leonard's in Honolulu are much better.
