9 reviews for T.J. Finley's Public House
I'm rating based on the beer selection and the weekday crowd. Skip this on the weekends, it's filled with the spillover from the Nutty Irishman down the block.
They have macrobrews (blech), but OMG they have 120 minute IPA from Dogfish and Pink Elephant from Delirium. Pair with some tasty food from their dinner menu and chat with the cool bartenders.
Thumbs up.
fun for football on sunday or a happy hour weekday beer with a friend. but the thurs-sat night scene?! they all out suck.
talk about a genetic cesspool of what everyone hates about new yorkers and long island in particular, tj finleys is like a bright light to moths. im never satisfied when i go there on weekends, but will stop in if i'm already half in the bag.
This place is my automatic, go-to pub when I'm on Long Island, especially on weeknights. The beer selection here is fantastic - somewhere around 80-90 bottled beers with an emphasis on Belgians and exotic imports; there's also at least a dozen brews on tap and they change them up a lot. Like, every couple of days. Very decent liquor selection too. Unlike other beer-centric places on Long Island (Effen Gruven and Croxleys, looking at you), they actually have your usual American macrobrews, so I can still take my loser Bud Light-drinking friends here.
The cuisine on offer isn't particularly diverse, but it's outstanding quality and improved by leaps and bounds the past few months (so although you paid $9 for a cheeseburger, you'll know why). The staff is extremely friendly and helpful with beer recommendations - if there's something curious on tap, they'll hook you up with a sample, etc. Oh yeah, free popcorn! Gets a pretty diverse but agreeable clientele, which leads to occasional drunken hilarity.
There's a couple downsides - the place isn't very big, and on weekends it's popular among the local 20-something set, so if you were looking to sit down and enjoy something avoid this place after around 9 on Friday and Saturday night. (During baseball season the outdoor patio opens to alleviate congestion.) Cleanliness? It's a bar, they do their best. And just like with food, the prices on drinks are usually on the high side of normal, but given the quality it's not egregious.
My favorite local spot for microbrews. Skip the tables and eat at the bar. At its best on off-nights or early/late. Avoid the crowd!
good beer selection but I just can't stand the small size of the place, unless you are lucky enough to get one of the 7 tables, you will be standing around shoulder to shoulder with people for the rest of the night wondering how many people over the maximum capacity they have packed in on a Saturday. You can go on a tuesday morning and no one will be there but then again if you go on a tuesday morning , you have more issues than just finding a place with some room to breathe. There are other places to get good beer , I just can't give this over a 2 even with the very nice brand new interior and plenty of flat screen tv's. Sorry -
Finley's is too crowded and annoying most of the time, but I must say that besides Croxley's, this has the most extensive beer selection in all of Suffolk county...or at least in Bay Shore. If you're approximately 21 years old, into places with loud, obnoxious music and large crowds, then this place is for you. I heard it's not as lame as the Nutty Irishman next door (I refuse to ever find out for myself just how awful the Nutty is) but if you are a beer connoisseur, give Finley's a shot. It's conveniently located on Main St. so if you get bored, there's tons of other places in stumbling distance.

Being a tourist in New York from Seattle, I wanted a good pub experience on Long Island.
I got one.
Seems an odd description for a pub, but this place was beautiful inside.
Rich mahogany colored wood was everywhere, clean counters & floors, hammered brass on leather seats, and best of all, an AMAZING BEER SELECTION.
The crowd was a fabulous mix of humans, much better diversity than where I live, fo shua.
My goal was to chat it up on my last night there, and this pub provided the perfect atmosphere.
Our bartender was affable, knowledgeable, and did not blink when I asked about Fat Tire. Even though he didn't have it, (as you cannot import it to the state of New York??) he found a nice option, Hocus Pocus and Fat Angel, which were all tastylicious as well.
All beers were presented handsomely - lovingly poured into an etched glass with a lemon slice, then placed gently in front of me.
It DOES make a difference when what you are about to imbibe isn't sloshed onto your boobs aboard a dirty coaster - as it frequently happens in some Seattle establishments :
Then beer failed to amuse me any more, ok, that's impossible & untrue - however, upon taking in my surroundings, I read the little laminated tent card on the bartop next to me...it dared me to try "Finley's Revenge - limit 2 per customer"
Oh yes, I will have one of those, and the souvenir mason jar glass will fit quite nicely in to my checked luggage.
Tastes like grape soda, makes you feel like you are riding a purple dragon while being tickled. STRONG and fun, like the hot firemen that were congregating at the table behind us. ;)
I got carded, hit on, conversed with, my jokes were laughed at, and had a vertiable blast.
Was it the liquor or was this place magical?!
See pics for proof of fun.
If you are in Bay Shore, New York, do yourself a favor and partake of T.J. Finley's.
Out of time to write reviews but I was just there two nights ago. This place is great/ Awesome beers from all over and the prices are good. Evryone is friendly as well.
I checked this place out on the recommendation of the first review here. It was a great pub with pretty good food and an awesome selection of beer on tap. The only thing I didn't like was once all of the locals started showing up (it was a Saturday night), they got preferential treatment and I waited forever to get another beer. By 10:00 it was pretty packed.
Certainly a cool place though and I plan to go back during the week.
