3 reviews for Szechuan Chef
If you're looking for a decent and affordable meal, go to Szechuan Chef.
We were hungry and wanting veggies so we opted for Chinese food.
The dining room is small but we found a nice table next to a window.
I love spicy food so I was stoked that they had chili oil and chili sauce.
We ordered kung pao chicken, vegetable chow mein, vegetarian delight (we requested garlic sauce and fried tofu), and szechuan eggplant. The dishes were good and I appreciated that they weren't bloated salty nor raging with msg (that stuff is evil). The portion size was appropriate (not too much nor too little) and reasonably priced at about $8/dish. Although the flavors were a bit flat, the veggies were fresh and the garlic had a spicy bite (they use real garlic and not the pre-cut kind).
The service was fine. I think the waitress was an owner. She was nice but not overbearing. I believe this is a family owned restaurant and I can tell that the owners work very hard.
I immediately had to go to the restroom after I ate dinner. The restrooms were surprisingly clean.
I ordered the "single dinner" ($11.00) consisting of rice, eggroll, soup, and your choice of 1 from 7 items, I chose cashew chicken.
I also had the sweet and sour pork, vegetarian fried rice, and vegetarian bok choy soup. On the menu it states in big red font that they do not use MSG, maybe that explains why the food is flavorless.
2 stars for the friendly (almost pushy) service.
The decor is unappealing. The chairs stick to your legs. Yuck. Maybe I should stop wearing micro minis.
Hands down the worst chinese food I have ever eaten. More bamboo shoots and water chestnuts than I have ever had in my life. They advertise NO MSG. I say put the MSG back in and add some taste. Maybe I am being a little harsh. No.....I'm not. There were 3 other people eating with me and agreeing. I felt like complete crap after eating here. It is too bad that this restaurant is taking up space in downtown Fairfax.
