R.I.P. Syms
You have been there my entire life including suits for multiple weddings, my bar mitzvah, and even a funeral. It will be sad to see something else occupy this building but apparently the merger with Filene's basement caused a premature death. You will be missed. -

This is a great place to get your work clothes. Oh, and funeral clothes (seriously, I bought two outfits to wear to funerals here that now double as work clothes).
It's not the place to get your casual weekend wear.
Still, if you need as suit, regardless of gender, you should get when you need at a good price at Syms.
(And it helps that it's pretty well-organized, you don't have to sort through piles of crap like some bargain basement places). -

This place is awesome! They have top brand jeans, shoes, suits, and clothes for men and women all at EXTREMELY LOW prices. They are a little understaffed but the all of the people there are eager to help and do a great job. I highly recommend this place and I will definitely be back when I need more clothes for work and life. Thank you Syms!

My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed paying $300 dollars for probably over $1000 worth of work wear (2 Italian wool suits!) they do some tailoring on-site, but if you prefer a really tailored look, these suits are priced low enough that you can buy a designer suit and then take it somewhere to be tailored and still keep it under $500.
I haven't been too big a fan of the women's section, (more of a Frugal Fannie's girl, myself) however they did partner with Filene's Basement recently, so here's hoping the selection will be better.Comment from Margaret C. of Syms 4/6/2010

Lots of interesting stuff to look at here. Excellent selection of socks and accessories, especially purses. I was very pleased to find a ton of socks and knee highs here all at awesome prices. I was not super impressed with their clothes, however. I did not really like how everything is grouped together more by type of clothing as in coat, dress, suit, rather than by size. At other department stores their sections are based more on size like juniors, misses and women's/ plus size. Here everything is just kind of thrown together by type of clothes and then by size and things seem to get mixed up. In the tops section for example, there were lots of tops that seemed more junior's size and a smattering of plus size ones. People I have talked to have more luck with the men's section, which while similarly organized seems to be much better selection. Also, while some things are a good deal, other things seem more expensive than at places like Filene's Basement. For example, I saw a shirt here for $30 that I recently purchased on automatic markdown at the Filene's Basement in downtown crossing for $10. Don't assume everything at Sym's is a good price, although many things are. I will certainly be back for bargain hunting, but am still a bit irked at the size situation.
Also, if you are a very tall woman, watch out. The top of the dressing room doors came up to just below my shoulder. If you are a couple inches taller than me (I'm only 5'6") watch out, you might be exposing yourself to fellow shoppers. -

This location used to be such a gem. I could always go into Syms and find something I liked. Well, I recently went into the combined Syms/Filene's Basement and it is AWFUL. The selection is marginal, the prices are high, and I left the building feeling rather upset.
I will not go here again. At this rate, I'll try Frugal Fannies down the street. -

I went here last November to purchase a suit. The place is very large and kind of intimidating. A clerk must have noticed my "oh shit" face, he came up to me and started to measure me immediately. In no time I had a really nice wool suit that ran under $175. Plus, I picked up some shirts, socks, ties, and a new pair of shoes. The whole thing ran me a little over $350. Best service I've ever experienced as a consumer.

I really don't want to review here because I believe it is truly a hidden gem. I primarily go shopping here for my work clothes. They have everything from underwear, shoes, to boots. They have great designer brands and prices. The customer service here is excellent as in they are knowledgeable, courteous, and most importantly not pushy. Another plus is getting in further discounts at the register. They do lose one star for being hit or miss with their selection.

Syms prices for designer clothes are a little bit higher than any other discount designer store but , let me tell you! The selection is incredible. I buy my suits there, it is better than Filene's basement, they have thousands more, same designers but the service is much better. The salespeople are well trained and they always give you the right suggestions.Did I mention their shoe selection?

Syms is a hidden gem. The reasons I loved it: logically laid out (i.e. all suits together, all shirts together, etc.). It's neat. The service team was attentive, encouraging and nice. But the best reason I love this place is the price! I went looking for a suit and scored 2 Anne Klein suits for $120 each (normally $350) that are classy, versatile, and well-made (Tim Gunn would approve, I think). The lines I saw that were name-brand included lots of Liz Claiborne (whom I hadn't really thought of since high school when everyone I know was carrying those purses), and lots of Ralph Lauren. I am making this place MY place for suits, teacher clothes, and general wardrobe staples. And, in an economy like this, you don't have to spend a lot to look amazing. Be warned, though: the women's dressing room is a bit like a stock yard: it's wide open, with some stalls in the center. So, if you have body issues or don't like seeing yourself or others naked, steer clear of the dressing rooms. I think you can return anything with a receipt, though, so you can always bring it back if it doesn't fit. Oh, one more thing: I'm a curvy sista, and the greatest part of Syms for me was that I could find clothes that accentuated my curves and weren't outdated or too old-ladyish.

Sorry, the new Syms/Filenes store is not what I expected to see when I first walked in. Same building but internally looks like another department store with no "WOW" factor. Syms was know for it's "markdown" Dress department. Now how are they distinguishing themselves from the other stores, especially in this economy? Hey if you were a recent Filenes basement shopper well then this is the place for you. As for me, I enjoyed the open space and well organized look and fill of what Syms orignally looked liked. I could find a dress for dinner, a date and church. The awesome thing was the treat when you looked at your ticket, there would be a new markdown price, depending on the date of the ticket--now that's gone. Also, the selection of brand name tops and sweaters--im gonna miss that too. The discount perfumes and colons. When they gave a discount, they mean't it. You could always pop into Syms, one, just to see if that outfit got marked down yet, or two, just to see if the owner offered an "Addtional 30% off" day. Now it just reminds me of another stanking crowded and cluttered department store with racks and racks of clothes. Im gonna miss the old Syms. Well back to Tjmaxx and Marshalls. At least I know what to expect and what I am dealling with when I go. This may sound like a complaint, but I am just highly disappointed in the merge.
