I just discovered this place a couple of months ago. It's been a few different things including the Nashville Biscuit house and all the exterior signs from their different names are still up. I don't know what the hell this place is supposed to be called but I like it.
We go here for breakfasts on Saturday mornings and I can honestly say it's a quality breakfast for under $5. You get the same set of servers, who are hard working, salt of the earth, efficient, that wait on you each week. The pancakes are fluffy, the bacon just a little crispy, and the prices are fantastic compared to say Cracker Barrell. The place does a brisk business but there is always a spot to sit. The patrons are friendly regulars which just adds to the whole community diner kind of place.
They also have a meat and three lunch menu. I have gone for lunch once and it was very good.
The sign outside said "WHERE THE LOCALS EAT", and I said, "Well, either the food is down home goodness...or we can publicly call someone out as a liar." I wouldn't have minded either, and thanks to that bitch meets adventurer side of me...I had THE BEST PORK CHOP OF MY LIFE. Sorry Doug.
My friend and I stopped here for breakfast one of the beautiful mornings we spent in Nashville, and it was AMAZING to say the least. Right off the bat, the service was awesome. I can't describe it, because the waitress was just naturally friendly and caring. She was nice, and she wasn't forcing it. I wanted to scoop her up and take her with me everywhere! And I could've... because she was also petite.
Anyhow, coffee, grits etc. Everything was good. One thing I noticed about having breakfasts in Nashville, people take their 'eggs-over-easy' seriously. Like, they are over SUPER easy, and no-one is scared of a salmonella poisoning lawsuit. I wouldn't complain though, because it's my fault for continuing to order them the same way. I had the pork chop and eggs breakfast and they came with some super delicious home fries. Simple...but absolutely delicious. The eggs whites were runny, but hey, like I said-- not their problem.
BUT THE PORK CHOP!!!!
It was like, indescribably good. They breaded and fried up the most tender pork chop I think I've ever had. The breading was thick, but totally crisp and not heavy at all! It was just an amazing piece of meat. Ugh, soooooo good. I'm closing my eyes and typing right now just so that I can imagine it!
The breakfast was so good that I decided to take an order of crabcakes to go, and those were pretty delish as well. A little bread heavy, and the possibility of canned crabmeat is great...but seasoned to perfection.
I can TOTALLY understand why the locals eat here.
Sylvan Park East, formerly Knife and Fork, is a tasty little meat and three. Sure, there are plenty of little Southern food restaurants in the greater Nashville area, but this one is probably in my top five. It changed management at some point over the past year, and I genuinely think the new owners are making some improvements.
I haven't dined in since Knife and Fork became Sylvan East, but before the change it was a pretty low-key Southern style spot with lots of NASCAR drivers' and country musicians' portraits and signatures on the wall. They now have a drive-through, which is pretty novel for a meat and three, and I like to pop through to pick up a quick, quality lunch.
Sylvan offers basics like fried chicken and catfish (my favorite), and their sides are pretty typical (green beans, baked beans, corn, et cetera). There's nothing exceptional about the place, but the staff is really friendly and attentive. The owner always calls me "friend." I don't know why, but that always makes me feel good.
So I have no idea why they're called "Sylvan Park East" now. The place is several miles from Sylvan Park...maybe they have another business on that side of town. Anyway, their lunch is pretty cheap and tasty. Apparently they open early (6:30) to serve breakfast. I haven't had it, but I'm guessing it's pretty hearty.
