My husband, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and I stayed three days at Sylvan Dale this spring. We had a wonderful experience there. My husband and I stayed in one of the cottages, which was simply but comfortably appointed, and my m-i-l and b-i-l stayed in one of the bunkhouse rooms. I was bothered by a strange smell in our bathroom, but I was also two months pregnant and since I couldn't figure out where it was coming from and nobody else could smell it at all, I eventually put it down to one of those weird pregnancy things.

We took several of the hiking trails around the ranch, which were pleasant, scenic, and ranged from low to moderate difficulty. Even better was the trail ride we took the second day. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable and the horses calm and good for beginners (and sort-of beginners - I ride dressage ordinarily, and find Western counter-intuitive) without being lobotomized. I didn't even miscarry, although it was kind of stupid of me to risk it. I have very low self-control where horses are concerned. :-/

We enjoyed the nicely appointed game room in the evenings, where my m-i-l consistently creamed me at ping pong and my husband and b-i-l alternated successes at pool. We also enjoyed the volleyball court and the wooden swing. The grounds and facilities were very pleasant and well kept in general.

Breakfasts were basic but tasty - a buffet of fruits and cereals in addition to cooked-to-order eggs, potatoes, and bacon or sausage. I was hoping for some of Tillie's baked goods, but they didn't materialize during our stay. As Tillie is apparently over 90, she does deserve a break!

It would have been nice to be a little closer to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, but the drive through the canyon was at least extremely beautiful.
