SXSW- How could you not have fun?!  I suppose if you hate music (or more specifically, indie music) I could maybe understand.  But, I have had some freakin awesome times at SXSW!  My only complaint would be the transportation to and from downtown and the fact that the traffic on 35 is terrible (even more so than normal!) and that it can take quite awhile to eat at any restaurant in the city.

But, come on people, it's a trade-off for how much fun you'll be having.  And you'll be so drunk that you won't even notice that you haven't eaten.  Besides many of the venues have free food.

I've never even paid for a wristband and I have managed to see quite a lot of great shows.  I may pay for a wristband this year so I can see the bands I really, really want to.

Anyways, I love ACL also but I think SXSW is a little less chaotic and you don't have to be in a big dust field all day and night like at ACL.

Homeless people need shoes.  Good little children who make good grades despite their parents never being home to help them with their homework because they work 16 hours a day need new shoes and free tacos.  The cashiers at Wal Mart need new shoes and free tacos  AND a week off of work AND a nice strong free drink.

Young yuppies who have enough vacation time to take a week off of work to fart around town and pretend they're 18 again and self-important old rich people and douchy hipsters with so much time and money from mommy that they can't snort it up their noses fast enough and steampunk (please, somebody put these people out of their misery) trustifarians DO NOT need a new pair of Sauconys, Pumas or Adidas sneakers.  They have tons of money and enough material possessions to choke a horse, thanks.  What they need is a job with Jimmy Carter roofing HUD houses or digging sewage ditches for a summer.  Maybe eMpTyV will pass those out next year.

SXSW 2008 is the bloated, decomposing corpse of fat Elvis after he's been left out in the middle of the street for a month in humid 100+ weather in a pool of his own dead vomit.  It's filthy and it stinks.  It's covered in jewel toned sparkles and rhinestone diamonds and golden sequins that can't begin to hide the rancid truth beneath - the truth that the entire system is built on a foundation of ranking people's worth and access to "the best" based upon their income and/or use as a potential sexual object. Nobody with a lick of sense is going to go near it, even with your soul.

First off, I think SXSW needs a separate category than SXSW in general because I'm sure it can be different every year. And I'd like to write a review for each year instead of just one review.

Wednesday:
Free Tex-Mex and Lonestar outside Emo's
Shout out Louds at Austinist party at Mohawk.
Free vodka drinks, BBQ and Home Slice Pizza and Austinist tote bag.
Saw the Ravenettes and Mae Shi at Emo's and found $40 on the ground. Bought round of beer.
Kimya Dawson at Jo's Coffee.
Hung out with fellow Yelpers, got free Torchy's wristbands. Ate a taco every night after this.
Sons and Daughters, The Kills (hottest woman alive) at Antones.
Von Iva at Spiros.

Thursday:
Stood in line at Parish for an hour for NPR day party featuring Jens Lekman and Vampire Weekend. Didn't get in.
Saw Sons and Daughters and Devotchka instead at the Yaris tent on 7th and Red River.
Went to 101X label appreciation party at Buffalo Billiards and ate free food and drank free Miller Lite and met Pete Townsend.
Black and White Year at Ale House?
Jens Lekman at the Mohawk

Friday:
Watched Weakerthans in the 120 heat of Volume night club.
Went to Fader Fort to see Lemonheads. Lemonheads cancel, drink free Stellas, get free shirts, cap, book and hang out with Yelpers instead.
Went to Ester's Follies to watch 4 hours of unfunny comedians. Brian Posehn and Morgan Murphy were the only ones who made me laugh. Was Janeane Garafalo ever funny or was she just hot?
Ended the night with Lucero at Red Eyed Fly. Had to leave early because everyone was smoking on the patio.

Saturday:
Went to Rachael Ray's party.
Got picture with Rachael Ray and watched her husband's band.
Quote of the Day --
Ray's husband "Are there any punk rockers out there?"
Old dude behind me: "There aren't any on stage."
Drank free Newcastles and mojitos and ate the best food of the week.
Watched Ephraim Ramirez of Napolean Dynamite spin records.
Used new pick-up line on cute girl serving drinks. She said it "almost" worked.
I can't remember what happened after this it seems like we walked around for a while and ended up at the Perez Hilton party.
Worse party of the week.
Mixed drinks were rancid.
Crowd was douche-y
Got lots of free gum and a shirt that says medium but wears like a extra-large

Well that's about all that I can remember. All and all I had a great time and it was more fun than my other option which was going to work.  I'll probably be going back next year if I have a wristband or not. Since I won my wristband my whole week was practically free except for the $40 I found and spent.

SXSW 2008 - virgin voyage for me

hosted a trainhopper on my couch from canada, met the girl who picked her up on the road

girl basically has a PhD in indie music.

team up with said girl for all three days.

used showlistaustin to find out all the good free shows and cover shows.

Managed to see Vampire Weekend, Shout Out Louds, MGMT, Kate Nash, Sara Bareilles, She & Him, Meiko, Ingrid Michaelson, Yeasayer, DeVotchKa, Sea Wolf, Jen Leksman, Bon Iver, Le Loup, and many others for only $35 total.

Met so many awesome people during the shows, totally changed my musical tastes.

Managed to retain a big Super Mario pinata from some electronic show at Thirsty Nickel. It stares at me at night sometimes and makes me nervous.

Said PhD in indie music managed to somehow purchase a $14 ice cream concoction at Amy's.

Trainhopper girl not seen for 2-3 days, finally showed up on my doorstep sat night at 3:30 am.

Good times.
