I only drive to Amador County for a limited number of reasons- the first being Swingle! It's a tiny place that's a bit tucked away, a friend from the area recommended it. We are still kissing her feet for doing so.

This little meat shop is a dream... more meats in more flavors/marinades than I could've imagined. They've got tons of prepackaged meat in the freezers (try the Kona tri-tip, I think I saw God the first time I ate it), or you can go to the counter and get fresh cuts. You can get the kind of delicious old school thick-cut bacon that puts grocery-store bacon to shame. We once got a Thanksgiving turkey from them that was SO good and flavorful and moist, the family is still talking about it.

We use Swingle Meats at our business and I can tell you unequivocally that this is the best beef produce available! I was introduced to Swingle's back in the early 80's when I was in 4H and stored our home raised pork there... that place is gourmet! When cooked correctly, that meat is UNBELIEVABLY GREAT!!! We buy their marinated tri-tips for our business and serve 'em up outdoor campfire style (for up to 250 patrons) and every one keeps a-comin back!!

Swingle Meats is definitely doing something very right, and in my estimation, that something... is everything!!

    Best place to get meat!

Their tri tip is off the chain. I especially recommend the kona marinated one.

For those (like me) who are not local, it can be easy-ish to swing by on your way to/from South Lake Tahoe. Keep in mind they are closed Sunday, though.

The BEST around. I have taken their ribs & tri tip from CA to Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas , Texas and Arizona. Everyone loved it.  I just wish they shipped. I use to make 2 trips a year to stock my freezer but now live in Arkansas. I will always tell friends in CA. about them and refer them over anyone. They are the BEST.

Everyone brags about how great the meat tastes at swingles however there is more than taste that I consider when purchasing  my meat products. Does anyone care where there meat comes from? Do you care to know anything about the farm the meat was raised on or how the animals were treated and what kind of diet they were fed? I asked these questions to the owner of swingles and was told that the meat was from local farms but he could not tell me what farms the meat comes from.
Swingles has great tasting meat however. I urge people to consider more than just taste and price when you eat your food. Swingles is a great place and has realy nice local people working at it but what about the people that Swingles does business with? What do you know about them?

First off, If you are vegetarian or lean towards veggie life...do not even walk in the door. You will have nightmares for a month. If you like meat, this is your heaven. No really. Heaven. Bacon is life in our house and we like to eat jerky like it going out of style. I have never had better jerky in my life and when I went in to buy some bacon, they cut it medium right of the slab. Holy jeebus. The prices are amazing. The service, impeccable.

1). This place is NOT hard to find. How can you not notice the rotating cow when entering/exiting Jackson? Pretty funny stuff. And the area ain't that big. C'mon folks!

    2) Tri-Tip. Any of them will do wondrously, thank you. And only around 10 bucks a pop! I've bbqd these beauties, refrigerated the remains, and then dived into them two days later. Still Juicy. Wow.

Anything here is amazing succulent. They used to be able to "process" any beast that you brought in (including the raccoon that you found by the roadside about ten minutes ago), but no longer so.

January 2011 = the month I decide to try NOT eating meat....also the same month I try Swingle's Tri-Tip?!!?  Whaaaa how did that happen?

My brother brought back a slab of Tri-Tip that he's been swooning about.  C'mon, being that I've never tried it, I just HAD to take a bite.  Although I cheated myself out eating meat this one day ... it was worth all the guilt I felt afterwards lol.  End result = BEST MEAT EVER.  PERIOD.  End of story.

I really hope someone closer to San Francisco picks up on this place and uses them as their purveyor for meat.  This place is just too much AWESOME not to.

I stopped here on the way to Markleeville and picked up jerky, bacon, smoked pork chops, ham steaks and regular pork chops.  I admit I went a little nuts, because I couldn't make up my mind.  Everything looked so good I had to be sure to cover all the bases.

This place is overwhelming for a newbie. When I first walked in, I had no idea where to begin.  There are refrigerators and freezers full of beef, pork and chicken and a butcher case with ham, bacon and jerky.  Fortunately, the large staff behind the counters works fast and efficiently.  This is imperative, as there is a constant stream of customers.

I agree with other reviewers this store is hard to find because of its awkward location.  My friend and I drove right past it and had to turn down a side road in order to come back around to access it.  The easiest way to find it is look for it in the area that one would consider to be Martell, because the store is before the Jackson city limits sign.  Good luck finding it.  It's worth the trip.

Absolutely amazing meat.  We don't buy it anywhere else. It's very reasonably priced and you get a lot for your money.

We normally buy the Kona Tri Tip or chicken. And their Ranch House chicken is tasty as well. I'm not exaggerating when I say that we go there atleast once a week and ended up leaving with so much food!

And you have to grab a couple of their doggy treats as well. 4 for $1. You can't go wrong.

It was my first time visiting Swingle Meat Co. and I was not disappointed.  Everyone was helpful and seemed genuinly glad to help you.  The folks behind the counter also were very helpful and cheerful.  Of course the reason I drove 40 min to go to the butcher was not because of the ambiance, it was for the meat, and I was overjoyed.  I must have bought 5 tri tips and fish and also some chicken.  If you havent had meat from swingle meat co.  make haste and get some soon Im sure that I will be back.  And get some jerky for the ride home, it tasted like dessert!

It's a very good and very long lasting local, one of a kind business with friendly customer service and you just never hear complaints about their meat.  I think the building needs upgrading, inside and out, but both of my large (definitely NOT the economy size), carnivorous sons think the meat there is the best. Swingles does  also provide an important service to hunters, which my sons are also (sad to say) as well as those who like to grow their own (meat) and I do like the venison salami they've made there in the past. However, they aren't the answer to it all.  For instance, last September I was hankering for a fresh turkey and called them.  They didn't have any and said nobody would have them that time of year.  But then I called our local Raleys who just happened to have a couple due to a customer having ordered one and the fact that they come four in a box.  So I lucked out on that occasion, but did feel that Swingles might at least have offered to order one for me, which they didn't.

Ok people I know i lot of you don't eat meat that's too bad cause I found a real good place for all things meat!

Now its hard to find this place, when you just make it too the top of the hill into Jackson its on the right side so get ready to hang a right real fast right after the gas station.

Once you find this jewel in the foothills you will smell the maddening aroma of smoked meats, they also make most of there own products from jerky, to sausage. Lots of freezers to stick your head into to look around. The product are always fresh, I stop here on my way to the Sierras to grab a item or two for the grill.

Also if your a hunter they can take care of you they do a great job!

    I say check them out!

These guys are specialists in meat. If you can stomach the decor (which is basically an entire herd of wild game mounted on the wall, looking at you mournfully as you enter the store), and the smell (which is basically that of dead animals... lots and lots of them), you will get a high quality product here.

I took one step in and then waited in the car for my sweetie to bring me some teriyaki jerky. I didn't want to lose my appetite.

Tri-tip makes it to our table every Christmas and bacon for Christmas breakfast. A tradition started only a couple of years ago after discovering the place and will continue!

    A Carnivores Toy Store!
Man what a place. Kona marinated Tri-tip, stuffed chicken breasts, jerky.....Hey you want an ENTIRE side of bacon? They got it. The guy behind me ordered a 2 inch thick porterhouse, they went in the back and voila, a porterhouse to rival anything I'd ever seen.
Jerky that'll melt in your mouth. Stuffed meats. Smoke! Ahhhhhhhhh. Next time your headed up near Jackson, Sutter Creek, anywhere along Hwy 49 stop in to Swingle's and get your fix...

I have been coming here for years.  Their meats are some of the best you can find in Northern California.  Their Beef Jerky is the best in the world.  Seriously.  I have never tasted better Jerky, and whenever I give anyone else a taste(It's my jerky, so hands off!), they agree completely.

Their pre-marinated meats are amazingly good and reasonably priced.  Try their Pineapple Chicken, Kona/Motherload/Whiskey RIver Tri-Tips, the Pulled Pork is amazing, their sausages are all amazing... The list just keeps on going.  They even have amazingly good pre-marinated fish fillets with cooking instructions on them, for a totally reasonable price.

If you need good meat.  Look for the giant, rotating cow on the roof.  If the Cow is not rotating, then the store is closed, so you are out of luck...

I shop here regularly on my way to Pioneer, Ca from my other home in San Francisco and I love their extensive selection of top quality meats. The fresh meats are kept in back, so you need only ask them for a roast or chops (or whatever you want) which they quickly cut and wrap fresh right in front of you.

They have a freezer section with all kinds of goodies like their big and flavorful Veal Raviolis. The choices are vast.

Their Country Style Bacon is sliced extra wide which makes it ideal for sandwiches. They have hard to find Apricot Wood Chips (as well as, Hickory, Apple & Mesquite) for the smoker. I always get some of their Beef Jerky as it is tender and full of spices.

It is definitely worth the trip and you can explore beautiful Amador County before you shop. Kirkwood Ski Resort is just 40 miles up the road from Swingle's. Sutter Creek (a real Gold Mining town) and the town of Volcano (with the Historic St. George Hotel) are very close by. The drive up highway 88 to Hope Valley is stunning. Don't forget to pack the cooler, so you can stock up on the way home!

My brother lives above Jackson and brought me a 13lb boneless prime rib roast from this place for me to cook for our 17 guests tonight...I'll let you know....he swears that they have the best meat. Updated:  Roasted at 500 degrees for an hour, then oven off for two hours, door closed, packed in rock salt.  It came out perfectly...delicious meat.

Five Stars based on my only experience to date with their fresh turkey. I usually pack the kids and head to my mom's country spread in Pioneer with a seriously overpriced Heirloom turkey from one of three precious butchers in the Bay Area. They are always delicious, but they cost $5+ a pound and I have to brine that mutha at home and then pack it on ice for the ride to the mountains. It's a major friggin production so this year, I was more than game to shake it up and try something new by buying a local local turkey. Cut to the chase, this was the best turkey EVER, pre-brined, stuffed with garlic, celery carrots, etc , and spiced to perfection( I had braced for major over salting, but it was happily not to be). All I did beyond Swingle's instructions was to soak cheesecloth in melted butter and white wine which I also used to baste the orgasmic bird. The cheesecloth treatment is strictly MS Turkey 101; applied to the immodest bosom of said bird for the first 2 hours or so of roasting. A legendary turkey experience PLUS, $1.79 OUT THE DOOR and ready for your ever loving oven... I am so getting on board for the jerky which is said to be beyond compare.

I and my muffin top Lucky jeans salute you, Sir Swingle.

Tiny parking lot, didn't care about the decor, wish they were open daily.  All that aside, hands down this is some of the best meat selection and jerky I've tasted.  That storebought jerky will never measure up once you've had them, and the kobe cuts are mouthwateringly divine.  Holiday hams need so little personal touch before baking and serving, a few well placed slices of orange and the tenderness is ready for consumption.  It's so good I'm practically inspired to pick up a gun and go hunting.

Have been there at least 5-10 times and love it. Keep coming back. Premium cuts of beef are very pricey but sure to impress. Don't rule out the seafood. I tried it out a while back and continue to grap the "Jalepeno crusted talapia". Very cheap and excellent. Its a bit of a drive but well worth it. I stock up about once a month.
