4 reviews for Sweetwater Regional Park
The Sweetwater Campground site was not bad, not bad at all. I am not a "true" camper, to wit:
*I am a huge fan of any/all KOAs. I am especially enamoured with the fact that there is no grass outside of the RV hookup sites-no grass/only cement=no vacuuming everyday in the RV. Hallelujah, and pass the margaritas! I also like the European tourists that rent RVs, go cross-country across America, and stay at the KOAs. Awesome time to practice your languages.
*So I like concrete (see above), and I like Wal-Mart no more than 5 miles away from my campsite.
*I don't mind the sound of a freeway/highway alongside my campsite. It just means if we are out of smores I can check my iPhone to see where the nearest VONS is, and head out/get back that much faster.
So for someone like me, Sweetwater Regional Park is an almost-perfect place: secluded, but not TOO secluded. Freeway right next to it, and main road running along side of it. Decent bathrooms and shower areas for all. Pretty landscape: looks like a nicely-maintained park. There is a lake on the grounds, but we didn't go to it. Maybe the next time we are here. The price was right: around $30.00 per night for an RV hookup spot. That's a really aggressive price considering KOA down the freeway charges quite a bit more.
If you want to do the camping thing but don't feel like pitching a tent in Yosemite or dealing with wild bears, then come to Sweetwater, spend a few nights and see the San Diego sights. It's a great way to ease into "full-on" camping life (which I still have not done - still have more easing to do).

quick! what do two lesbians and 6 boys under the age of 12 do for a birthday party on a friday night?
ew! don't be gross. weirdos.
take 'em camping at sweetwater regional park, of course!
we drove out on a warm friday afternoon and were so pleasantly surprised to find a quaint little campground, complete with HUGE fire pits (more about the fire later!) and enough room to pull in two cars and put up two tents.
it was the 11 year old's birthday celebration, and when i say celebrate, i mean this: a weinie roast, complete with baked beans and potato chips, birthday cake and as much soda as a young boy could ever dream of.
there is a huge grassy area set up nicely for a game of flashlight tag at 9:00 at night. bare chested (the boys!!! jeez!!!), of course.
a bathroom is centrally located, but who needs that when, at the end of the night, the boys are encouraged by the lovely wife to piss in the fire to put it out?
ah yes. the perfect ending to a perfect camp-out.

If your 18 yrs old and reserve a spot beware. They wil move you where they want.. No refunds. Just ask my son on his big adventure 07-26-09. Never happen in New Mexico
How beautiful! You're in the middle of the city, just a short jaunt from downtown, and yet you can find yourself in the middle of a quiet park with well-kept trails and some nice scenery.
I guess there could be a little more in terms of picnic tables or at least paths that let you enjoy the river and the lakes. (As it is now (at least where I was, near where Briarwood Rd. hits Sweetwater), you have to walk off the main path and sometimes duck some trees in order to get the lake views.) But it's all good and certainly not a problem if you bring a picnic blanket.
San Diego has a number of beautiful parks like this. Use them!
