Review from Richard S.
New York, NY
I picked up a few gluten-free items for an impending date, can't remember now-- cookies, brownies-- because they were eclipsed by the apocalyptic gravitationally mind-bending experience of something called the "Nothin' Muffin." First of all, it takes courage to give a muffin such a negative sounding handle-- it's like calling a hamburger "The Loser" or something. But the name refers to the lack of certain offending ingredients: no wheat, no gluten, no dairy, no eggs, no corn syrup solids (or any added sugar, I think), no lard, no bacon, no rabbit brains, no beard hairs, no Nike tattoos, no bad vibes. What could possibly even be IN this muffin? Was it a muffin wrapper filled with air? I accepted the challenge.
I'm not a muffin guy. When I see coffee shop muffins, all slimy, wrapped in cellophane, it just makes me sad. Normally I'd have to be starving for several days to even consider one. I once had a date that started out at Connecticut Muffin-- I should have known better-- and ended with me squeezing through an impossibly small bathroom window. Anyway, I bought TWO Nothin' Muffins, just so I could try one out first before presenting it to this unsuspecting celiac friend. If it was as bad as I suspected it might be, I could always throw at at an overly aggressive fixed-gear bicyclist.
The Nothin' Muffin was the best muffin I ever tasted (to be fair, I haven't eaten a muffin since 1989). It was incredible. How did they do it? I was so flustered I forgot to take a picture (plus, I was driving), but there is one on this page (thanks Jenelle!) I ate this muffin with so much lust I questioned my sanity, and almost lost a finger. The only sad thing is that the second muffin never made it to my date. I ate them both.Listed in: Portland TRIP

So this place is an awesome Vegan bakery and a sub-par cafe.
I know Vegan food is known for being bland but seriously, the soups and sandwiches were pretty blah... and not only that, EXPENSIVE!
Lunch for 3 was about $40 + tip ( 2 soups, 3 sandwiches, 3 drinks and 3 cupcakes ).
I would say their pastries are very good, I couldn't tell that they were Vegan.
I will only come back for desserts but not for a meal. -

First off, I can't cook to save my life, much less bake. I have been blessed with wonderful men who do the cooking for me.
So it's no surprise, that I also can't bake. Step in Sweetpea with their Vegan cupcakes. 27$ for a dozen. I had coconut cake with vanilla frosting and roasted coconut on top. Also carrot cake.
I wish I could say it taste like a regular milk and eggs cupcakes...but it doesn't. It's less creamy, less moist, just less than. But for being vegan, it was tasty.
On the other coin, I saw some lunch items like soup and sandwiches come out, and I was so tempted to stick my thumb in something just to get a taste.
I will be back for lunch, I am sure, but I will pass on future cupcakes. -

they have got the vegan baked goods down. tastes just like the regular versions, and maybe even better. the marion berry muffin i had was very delightful. i wish i could eat those every day and pretend that they are good for me because they are vegan.

Oh, man. I am glad I don't live closer to this place or I'd be in trouble! We started and ended a recent vacation to Mount Hood in Portland and chose our hotel based on its proximity to the famous vegan mini mall. This place had so many good sweets and we tried just about everything. The oaty creme bar things were my favorite. They had great bagels with flavored cream cheese, too!

A cute comfy spot. The coffee is awesome. I think they must lace the vegan carrot cake with vegan crack, because I don't even like cake and I kept on sneaking bites from my friend.

Insanely good every single time we've been here. I'm not vegan and neither is my bride (although she's pescetarian), but this place has AMAZING baked goods. They rank up there with the best pastries that I've ever had, regardless of animal friendliness.
Cinnamon roll? Gigantic, delicious, perfect amount of cinnamon and frosting (5 stars out of 5). Marionberry muffin? Crunchy, slightly sugary crumble topping, moist on the inside (5 stars). Cappuccino? I'm picky about these but they do it right, a big mug with great (soy) milk foam.
You're not vegan? Doesn't matter. Go here, forget that it's vegan (if you need to) and prepare to be blown away. -

Nice place, good coffee and good pastries -- horrible service. I've been here three times, and have no plans to return. I don't know why, but every worker I've encountered here seems to be very put-off not only by serving customers, but also by being friendly, welcoming or accommodating. When I did get (relatively) timely service, the barrista barely spoke more than "yes?" and telling me the price. Today, my final visit, I stood at the counter for ten minutes (with two more people lined up behind me) while three workers actively ignored our presence. One was making espressos, but saw us standing there. No "I'll be right with you" and no "one moment please" -- just silence. Two bakers from the rear of the store occasionally walked near the front of the store, but seemed to be avoiding eye contact.
Maybe, since they have a "captive" clientele, they don't feel the need to be gracious? Maybe they're not morning people (hint: don't run a coffee shop if you're not morning people)? Maybe I just happened to come in on off days? Maybe the employees are all socially awkward to the point of muteness? Whatever the case, they've lost my business and I would recommend avoiding this place unless you're a masochist or don't have anything better to do with your time. -

Oh my gosh! I still dream about the Charlie Brown bar that I got here. Ok maybe not, but man was it amazing. Chocolatey peanuty buttery oaty goodness. The girl behind the counter was really friendly and happy to chat, and recommended the Charlie Brown as her favorite over whatever the other thing was I was considering (though she said that thing was great too, and I'm sure it would have been), and man was she right. Best. thing. ever. Delicious delicious food (yeah, it happens to be vegan too), great staff, cute laid back feeling - Love!

Sweet Pea is, simply, amazing. I ordered several for multiple work holiday parties, and the cakes were a big hit. Since the groups I work with has several dietary issues (mixture of Vegans, Vegetarians, religious restrictions on eggs, dairy allergy, etc) Sweet Pea is the perfect solution.
I'd been to Sweet Pea before, and I'd be impressed with their baked good and coffee. Such a great addition to the neighborhood! -
Review from Jenna M.
Sweetpea has vaulted to the top of my list of places to go when I am in Portland. During my first trip here two years ago, I came to Sweetpea and was so charmed by the food, the ambiance and the staff; this past weekend, I found myself here again, and the magic had not at all worn off.
I arrived at 9am on a Saturday morning with some unconventional plans: while away from New York for the weekend, I needed a place with wireless internet where I could camp out for a few hours and livestream a Gotham Girls Roller Derby triple-header. Even better if this place also had vegan food and drink so that I didn't wither away to nothing while watching. It was quiet in the cafe at that hour, so I was able to place my order right away and plunk down in a prime spot with an electrical outlet. I ordered a glass of orange juice and one of the Saturday-morning-only vegan donuts, which were both perfect. The donut was cakey and huge and full of vegan Bavarian creme, which is something I don't think I've enjoyed since childhood (and even then, it wasn't vegan, of course). And all this for less than $5.
The wifi worked perfectly for the entire six hours (ugh, I am such a weirdo) I was camped out at Sweetpea. Around noon, I decided that I was a) hungry; and b) being a mooch, so I placed an order for a sandwich: the Ives, a seitan, sauerkraut, and spinach sandwich with a homemade remoulade and a side of chips. It was really tasty, especially the bread, which was soft, fluffy and warm. I guess I shouldn't have expected anything less from a bakery, but there's just something awesome about homemade sandwich bread. I also got a lemon creme fruit tart, because I am a glutton, and it was damn good.
The staff were so friendly and sweet while my butt occupied one of their chairs for nearly and entire day, and I appreciated the huge variety of food -- both savory and sweet -- that I could snag throughout my long stay. I will definitely be back to Sweetpea the next time I am in town, and the next time after that, and the next time after that. (Its proximity to St. Francis Park and the other stores of the vegan mini-mall are an added bonus, to be taken advantage of when not glued to a computer.)Listed in: Vegan Food and Drink

This place is really fantastic! I'm new to PDX and this place was recommended to me numerous times for great sweets and vegan brunch. Once I tried one of their chocolate chip cookies, I was hooked!
My husband and I have since gone to Sweetpea's brunch for two of our past four weekends of living here in PDX. It was delicious both times, the staff was super nice and the bakery has a great atmosphere. Plus, being next door to Food Fight and Herbivore - it's a dream block!! -

went to get lunch w/ my daughter and they were rude. The service was poor, they seemed inconvenienced to get our orders or answer our questions about what we would be eating. When we did get our food (grilled vegan cheese for her) and a piece of cake for me. Her sandwich was tasteless and dry. She took one bite and refused anymore. I tried my cake and it crumbled from it's dryness. They seemed checked out...burned out and in need of some good vegan food. Waste of money.

I like the beverages here (hazelnut milk is offered for coffee drinks!), but beyond that, I mostly stay away. I have been glutenized on more than one occasion, and I feel that I can get delicious, gluten-free and vegan treats in better settings around town.
However, the location is perfect (it's part of the vegan mini mall), and the coffee and tea really is tasty. -
Review from Kedar D.
This is a middling vegan bakery/cafe/coffeeshop. I came twice, first for tea and baked goods, and then a second time for brunch.
The first time I had an oatmeal-peanut butter-chocolate chip cookie and a slice of coffee cake. The cookie was dense, crumbly and dry and not particularly satisfying. This place could learn a thing or two from Pattycake Vegan bakery in Columbus, OH which makes cookies which are more moist, soft and delectable. The coffee cake was similarly dry and not flavorful.
Kudos to them for having loose-leaf tea options.
I came for brunch as they usually have an all-you-can-eat buffet for $10, with different choices each weekend. When we got there, they'd switched to an all-you-can-fit on a single plate style for $6. Not a bad deal.
I loaded my plate with tofu scramble, mac and cheese, and biscuits and gravy. They'd run out of a peach cobbler dish already and had no plans of replenishing it. The scramble was okay, the mac and cheese was good, and the biscuits and gravy were not great (the biscuit was too hard and the gravy too salty).
As such, Sweetpea was a mixed experience for me. I like the vibe of this place but I wasn't so impressed with their baked goods (Back to Eden in NE Portland has much better offerings), and their food was only okay on a whole. -

Yet another vegan bakery in Portland which seems to be the industry standard here, a bit redundant if you ask me. Cupcakes, cakes, cheese cakes all vegan, hurray. But what sets Sweetpea apart from the rest, are their amazing sandwiches! The bread is fresh and the ingredients are top notch. I'm not sayin' you should skip the cupcake, order the sandwich for lunch and have the cupcake for dessert. Just sayin'.
Tip
- Limited seating inside. Call in your order to-go. -

I love everything here. The buffet is legit, the sandwiches are legit, the schmears are legit, the drinks are legit, and obviously the desserts are legit.
Eat a Charlie Brown. The sweet creamy peanut butter topped with dark chocolate spread over a crunchy oat crust will steal a virgins v-card.
Challenge a monster cookie to a duel. You'll probably lose. Two hand sized cookies of your choice joined together in unity with a huge serving of sweet, fluffy frosting will kick you in the gut face. I usually lose. It's ok, don't take it personally. There's more for later.
Eat a Snickerdoodle. It's bigger than your poodle. It'll tickle your noodle. I dream about them. I'm dreaming about them right now.
Free WiFi and sexy catering? BAM!
Just do it. Do it. -

I've gone back a couple of times because a friend of mine is vegan, but everything is kind of mediocre here. Everything kind of tastes the same... I guess if you're vegan and are craving a sugary treat, go for it, but if I were vegan... I'd get some delicious Petunia treats.
Oh, the service was MUCH MUCH better the last two times I went.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Ok Ok Ok,,so everyone is exclaiming about how this place is a Vegan nirvana, but I was raised in the Midwest, and I am so not vegan. Just getting that out there.
However, for the gluten devil inside of me, I heart their gluten free chocolate chip cookies. With some ol fashioned Wisconsin standard dairy milk moustache ice cream.

I love this cafe.
Brunch on Sunday was always great (and I've been to Sweet Pea A LOT), waffles, chicken fried seitan, kale, sweet peach jam, pancakes, potatoes, (a tasty) tofu scramble, whatever, everything I've eaten at brunch is delicious and gives me that happy warm feeling in my belly. And perhaps also a bit of a food coma.
Then there is the rest of the week. Yummy donuts on Saturday, the daily soups which are heaven, a bagel with one of a variety of shmeers/spreads, the beautiful selection of sandwiches and absolutely great lattes (I don't think I've ever had a bad one).
The biscuits and gravy are THE BEST EVER. You'd think it was simple, nothing special... it's just biscuits and gravy right? Wrong. They are mouthwatering and without comparison. So if you happen to see them on the menu, they're worth ordering.
Sometimes the service is a bit too hip for me, but more often than not it's fast and friendly. There is ample bike parking, it's conveniently part of the vegan strip mall (one stop shopping!) and they have free wifi (and even a few outlets to plug in if you need to.) -

For us Vegans, Sweetpea and the accompanying neighbors is a slice of vegan awesomeness.
Specifically, Sweetpea will kick the buts of any bakery that you know of....and do so VEGAN-STYLE.
The only complaint I have about this place is because everything is so good, I usually gain an extra pound or two when I come home to Portland. -

This was the first place I ate when I first arrived in Portland last summer. I'd read a lot about "The Vegan Block," and it was really great being able to experience it in real life. It's a great little strip of vegan-owned and operated businesses including a grocery shop, a clothing store, a tattoo parlour, another awesome vegan cafe around back, and this absolute gem of a cafe/bakery. Sweetpea instantly became a staple in my Portland diet during the time I was there.
All of the baristas here are super-sweet, and each of them makes a really good hand-pulled iced latte (the cafe offers agave nectar, too, if you're not that into sugar, even the raw stuff). The faux grilled cheese with added avocado and tomato is awesome, and the baked goods (probably goes without saying) are pretty much unrivaled. I bought a mixed bag of cookies and cupcakes for the people I was staying with, and everyone was totally crazy about them - even the ones who weren't vegetarian or vegan.
Free wi-fi, chill and cool environment, and a selection of amazing food and drinks that you don't even have to put any thought into first when ordering. It's all cruelty-free and awesome.
If I ever make it back out to Portland, Sweetpea will definitely be one of my first stops! -

Sweetpeas' industrial looking facility, with all the exposed piping and visible bakery elements lends it a bit of a cold and artificial feel. Ironically, this is a VEGAN bakery!
If you're one that likes their cookies with milk, they have 4 varieties: Soy, Rice, Almond and Hazelnut!
Their apricot danish is wonderful, but their peanut butter cake (and cupcake) are divine! Be sure to get something to drink if you order those two, it can get very rich (at a vegan bakery?!)!
Free Wi-Fi makes this place a great hangout spot too! -
Review from David D.
Sweetpea missed their opportunity to get a carnivorous person like myself to like, or even enjoy, vegan food. It was a Saturday morning a few weeks back and I was craving a breakfast sandwich, something with tons of goodness - eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, etc. Meat, Cheese, Bread was closed for their anniversary. At this point I was starving and I saw the crowd of people down the street at Sweetpea. I walk over and noticed that everyone was enjoying some type of breakfast. I go in and see that they're offering a vegan brunch, I figured why not, I'm hungry and this is new to me.
My first thought after I ate this food was, "I want my $10 back." All of the food that I ate had no flavor, and it tasted, and felt, like cardboard. I had a pancake breakfast sandwich with fried tofu and some type of soy concoction that was suppose replicate meat, kale, fried mcdonald's hash browns and fired apple pie. I don't see the hype about this place, or this type of food. The only thing I could relate to were the hash browns and fried apple pie.
For future reference, I'll stick with meals that contain Meat, Cheese and Bread. -

Hello food poisoning. It's been a while!
So I had this sandwich there, then about 4 or 5 hours later I was shitting and puking my brains out. Nothing else to eat after the sandwich, nothing within the time frame before hand. Place came highly recommended. Seemed legit.
But wait! There's more!
Lines that take forever. I had two people in front of me, and waited for 35 minutes!!!!! WTF? Seriously? This place is hooooooorrible! Please don't patron these people. Send a message to people with shitty food and horrid service. -

We ate our peanut butter brownie before our sandwiches were served. This was a delicious brownie-moist, chocolaty, and not too sweet. Eating such a little chunk of awesomeness before the main course seems like a set-up for sandwich failure. Happily, failing is not even a option for these killer sandwiches. We had the daily special-the Buckman, and the mock French dip, the Wilson Brothers. Both were SUBLIME. Light, unobtrusive bread, just the right amount of sauce, and seitan seasoned to perfection. Who knew grilled seitan could beat a brownie? Apparently, the folks at Sweetpea.

I love Portland because places like Sweetpea exist. Your friendly, neighborhood (vegan) bakery. Not that many other cities get places like this. Be thankful for the multitudes of vegan places we can freely choose from.
I ordered the half sandwich and soup dealio and when I asked if the untuna salad tasted like tuna, the girl gave me a sample! Like it was Costco or something. but vegan. I don't know if it tasted like tuna or not because I haven't had tuna in a while. I don't actually know why I asked.
Anyway, my sandwich was decent as far as simple sandwiches go. The soup was flavored and periodically spicy. Good standard vegan fare, but nothing really really special. The pastries are a whole different story. You might think that you'd be able to taste the veganness in them, but I really doubt you could. -

Lisa did our wedding cake and it was freaking yummy! The first layer was vanilla latte, the second chocolate and peanut butter and the top toasted coconut.
But it wasn't only yummy it was very affordable. Typically when the word "wedding" is thrown in something they multiply the price by like 10. Lisa doesn't do that though, nor does she tack on fees for every little thing that can be thought of. There's only so many places to get a vegan wedding cake in town, and Lisa was by far the best value (and probably the best product too).
P.S. Make sure your cake topper is in all the way... ours is now legendary. -

Makes me seriously consider becoming vegan. We have a thing for vegan baking - specifically, we crave it and are on the outlook for the perfect vegan cookie. We tried the chocolate chip and the oatmeal raisin, both of which were chewy, sweet, and warm. Absolutely no complaints, and I'd love to try other options! They look like they have lots of choices, and I want to go back soon!!!

Review from Ashley G.
Sweetpea used to be about 4.5 stars for me, but it's been losing steam for me slowly since I moved here about 6 months ago. As a vegan, before I moved to Portland, it was always high on my list of food stops and I wished that Sunday brunch happened every day. Not so much anymore...
There are great sandwiches for lunch when I'm able to stop by on my lunch break during the week... I love the unchicken salad personally. And I love hot sandwiches made in their panini press. I had a great potato soup there too one day.
Here are some reasons I'm feeling less than 5 starish about Sweetpea:
Slow service. There is usually only one person at the counter to operate the register, take orders, fill bakery/bagel orders and make coffee drinks. If there is more than 1 or 2 people in line ahead of me and I'm in a hurry, I usually just leave. The counter/server people are all very nice and helpful though... just feel like sometimes it's understaffed, which I realize is probably an economical thing for them.
The glazed donuts on Saturday used to be really amazing and now I am feeling just meh about them. Did they change the recipe or baker, or did I just get tired of them from overindulging? Not sure. I can't say I've been particularly moved by too many of the dessert offerings I've had there. They are generally good, but not great... there's nothing there that I crave having dessert-wise or go out of my way to get.
Inconsistent quality of Sunday brunch: Today, I went and had the all-you-can-eat brunch. It was biscuits and gravy day (a usual favorite), with seitan, tofu scramble, potatoes, kale, berry compote... I was excited... and then quickly disappointed. Normally I love their biscuits and gravy. Usually it's a white gravy which is really savory and tasty. Today it was some kind of brown gravy which was very bland and unimpressive. It tasted like a packet of Hain vegetarian gravy. The seitan was not its normal texture either. If you go on "Mc Breakfast" day, prepare for your "McMuffins" to be fairly untoasted and kind of cold from sitting out. I don't go on McBreakfast day at all anymore.
I will keep going to Sweetpea (probably mostly for sandwiches at lunch) because I want to support awesome vegan businesses, but I definitely am not going as often as I used to.Listed in: Best Vegan Grub

We in Portland are extremely lucky to have a place like Sweetpea.
Their baked goods are awesome and there's something for everyone. They have danishes midweek, donuts on Saturday, black bottom cupcakes and nuttin muffins if you want something not too sweet... I crave a bagel with facon-scallion spread just about every morning. They mix it up too: they had some mini muffins a few weeks ago and they were perfect bite sized sweets.
Sunday brunch is unbelievably good (once in a while a little off, but that's bound to happen when you put it out every Sunday!). Sometimes at the mcbrunch, I want to stuff 10 or so of those hash browns in my pocket for later (but I don't)! Still the best vegan biscuits and gravy I've ever had.
The sandwiches are really tasty too, and they have lots of meat/dairy sammie alternatives that are really good. I'm not really a sandwich person and I love em!
The staff is really great. They went through a period months ago where some of the staff wasn't the most friendly (not that they were necessarily rude) but for the last six months or so (at least), the vibe seems a lot more friendly and upbeat in general.
If you bike, there's lots of bike parking out front. -

Sweetpea is pretty much my heaven on earth.
My friend and I trekked down there and got some super tasty sandwiches (seitan roast beef with au jus, and vegan grilled cheese pesto deliciousness) and way too many sweets. There was some sort of gluten-free chocolate parfait-type dessert we split that neither of us were too crazy about, but the snickerdoodles and brownies are absolutely fabulous, and those chocolate-topped peanut butter and oat bars are orgasmic.
I really don't understand all the complaints about the staff. Maybe I'm just lucky, but they were pretty pleasant when I was there. They gave my friend a glass of almond milk when she asked for it, even though it wasn't a menu item or anything, and they were really patient while we took forever choosing desserts from the case.
Great place, great food, we'll be back often. -

This is the kind of vegan establishment that makes me want to quit my job and open a vegan bakery. Everything is spot on. Their vegan panini sandwiches are heavenly. I got one bendishaw sandwich, which is served on their whole wheat bread with pesto, vegan cheese and tomato. My husband got the katie john rainboots sandwich, which is a vegan tuna fish sandwich....he devoured it. We took many sweet treats to go (we are fat kids at heart). We tried cookies, cupcakes, bars and cake. If only they delivered to Arizona!

Sweetpea did my wedding cake and cupcakes. Lisa is really cool, and totally talented. My guests had no idea the cupcakes were vegan. They were delicious, moist, and inventive. I will say I do not recommend going cupcake tasting first thing in the morning if you haven't had breakfast. I was cracked out on sugar for like 2 hours on a Saturday morning, I felt like I should be mumbling to myself in a sleeping bag in old town. But that was my own fault.
I also came here for a sandwich (lunch) and it was mind blowingly delicious. You should definitely try them out. Even carnivores would appreciate the delicate flavors, quality products, and ambiance.
Also, their "judge" at the Vegan Iron Chef competition was the only person to say something intelligent during the tasting other than Isa. Kudos for not groaning "yumm" or saying "i wish you could taste this". Freaking ridiculous, but I digress.

Back to Eden has won my heart in the vegan sweets area (sorry, Sweetpea!), but they do have some delicious sandwiches. I came here a year ago to take home one of their ready made sandwiches; it didn't survive the plane ride home.
On my recent visit, I had their made to order sandwich from their new menu, the chickpea tuna w/daiya cheese, which I quickly gobbled on the plane. The kettle chips that were tossed in the bag as a side were still crisp. It's a wonderful hearty lil meal for under $7.
No, the staff here aren't as lively, but as long as their sandwiches are still kickin', I'll be back.Listed in: Faux Meat Galore, Veg Oregon, Vegan dessert

I ordered a gluten free cake from Sweetpea and it was great! They did a fabulous job on the decorations and the flavors.
Their gluten free chocolate chip cookies need some work though. They are too dense and have a sandy texture. Other than that, Sweetpea is great.
