Since I'm on the subject of sweets, I decided to write this review of their decadent cakes and pastries. I think I'd like one of these bakeries like uhm, er, in my own kitchen!
Taste is crucial for a good bakery but another crucial aspect is FRESHNESS. I've been to so many run of the mill bakeries where the person at the counter whole-heartedly assured me that the cake/pastry I was about to buy was FRESH but alas, to my chagrin and sometimes anger, it turns out not! Stiff, stale bread does not make me happy.
I'm always on the hunt for a good bakery and in the thoughts of Marie Antoinette: I must eat cake! At least once a day. At least. *sigh*
Finally, a great bakery in Marin that sells treats other than cupcakes and cakes! Sweet Things bakery carries cupcakes, small cakes, cookies, truffles, and other sugary items. After trying thier cookies at a bridal shower some years back, we decided to stop after a beautiful day in Tiburon. Despite a somewhat hidden location, we found the shop, and after peering at their desserts (thier lemon cake looked yummy!), we decided to get a mud cupcake and red velvet. They were to die for!- I never knew that you could get a New York cupcake thousands of miles away in little Tiburon. The red velvet was moist and had the right amount of savory frosting while the mud cupcake was ooey-gooey with its rich chocolate taste. Overall, I am SO going to be back to Sweet Things- and oh yeah, BEST in Marin!!!
Cupcakes, lately are the name of the game.
Grudgingly.
I Love a nutty, chewy &/or oaty bar any time. Something fruity & crumbly is always on my list - but recently, the tongue wants what the tongue wants.
I had heard about Sweet Things, and as much as I avoid Tiburon (equate it to avoiding say - the plague), I was on a mission. Upon entry, I wanted to order one of everything (except for that dry looking low fat oat log, WHAT must that taste of), but knew that I was destined to imbibe the Autumn Spice Cupcake. It looked lovely and I knew that we would be good pals. I happily paid my $2.50, took one last look at the gorgeous case - which boasted mini cheesecakes, brownies, tarts, cookies galore, jam bars, chocolate clusters, confections and more. Sigh. More.
I took my purchase to my car, pretending that I would covet it until I got home. We all know better than to believe that shit. I tore into it at the first stoplight. I don't even know if it was red.
What's this?
Pink frosting? That's not right - white cake? NOOOOO!!!!
I was handed the WRONG treat!! My hopes not dashed, but considerably fallen, I wasn't going to let this moist cake go to waste. I bit in anyway. Frosting: too too sweet. Cake: moist & delicious, yes but even Sweet Things does not live up to my Teacake Bakeshop in Corte Madera.
All in all, I will be back - for something other than cupcakes.
This place is ok, but kind of over-rated. The cookies are so-so (there's a company that makes freshly baked cookies and sells them at Molly Stone's Markets that are way better), and the cupcakes (the chocolate one I had anyway) are a bit dry.
The service is kind of hit or miss. If a young blonde woman is working, you will most likely be helped promptly and with warmth, small chit chat, and a smile as you go out the door. The older woman is a bit icy. I came in before Christmas with a friend who wanted to special order a cake and the older woman did not want to discuss it with us. Hello! We are paying customers! Or, rather, we WOULD have been had it not been for the turned-up-nose service.
There is a reason that Sweet Things has been around for 30+ years now - they produce a very high quality product at reasonable price. I've been a customer since they first opened and will continue to be until they close.
Over the years certain items have come and gone (I still miss the sweet cheese pastires), but the quality has never waivered.
I'm partial to their "Fallen Angel Cake" and the chocolate mousse tort.
There isn't a Johnny-come-lately cupcake place in Marin county that has a cupcake that can compare to Sweet Things'. Theirs are obviously made from scratch - dense and moist with excellent buttercream frosting.
This Bakery is truly as good as it gets.
I first became acquinted with this bakery when I worked in Tiburon.
And when I first opened my coffee shop vowed to have their baked goods on hand. And after 13 years, I still continue to order from them because there products are fresh and the staff is so helpful.
My current favorite is the Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes. And Tres Leches.
I have ordered: red velvel cupcakes & cake, lemon cupcakes, carrot cupcakes & cake, black and white cake and mini, lemon bars, brownies, apricot bars, apple pie, boysenberry pie, big roadie cookies, chocolate chip cookies, ginger crisps, . .
after all they must be doing something right, they have been in business for 30 years. Thank you Sweet Things for contributing to my sweet tooth.
Pricey but worth it! Ordered my wedding cake and received excellent service and guidance. The top tasted great a year later... lemon.
They make a wonderful cookie called "Ice ream" cookie, worth all the calories!!!
Sweet Things is Excellent! A Tiburon staple for years, this is the place to pick up your deserts and sweets. They have some of the best coffee! mmm On a cold Marin day a cookie and coffee make everything ok.
Fantastic Everything!
This place is simple to review.
YUM! YUM! YUM!
All kinds of beautiful & tasty baked goods that will make your mouth water just seeing them. Tasting them is even better!
YUM! YUM! YUM!
This place has rocked my world since...well, I'm aging myself now. Honestly, I haven't set foot on the premises for many, many moons, but have enjoyed several wonderful cakes from this place just in the last year when friends have brought cakes, the last one being last Monday night for a Passover dinner -- a flourless chocolate cake covered in chocolate -- so good...
also recommended:
white cake with coconut frosting (and I usually HATE coconut, but this rocked)
chocolate cake with white or chocolate frosting and raspberry filling
I am not even a cake person, really, because 90% of the time, the cake people buy at the grocery store is so bad (as in "this is so sweet, I feel like I'm eating bags of sugar and nothing else or dry (what happened to the butter?) or topped with heavy frosting that tastes like so much cocoa-flavored lard), it's nasty.
I have no idea how the service is, but it was good back in the day, along with those heart-shaped chocolate mousse things that they had or still have? I need to get over there soon.
Sweet jesus.
Just thinking about the delicious sugary treats from Sweet Things have me orgasming again. Oh my.
This place is a diabetics wet dream.
Amazing treats are to be had here! Thick slabs of cake, gooey rolls and huge cupcakes. If you are on a diet, avoid Sweet Things at all costs or cheat one day and do extra crunches to make up for the indulgence.
We got our wedding cake from them, and not only did they make the whole three layer cake out of organic material (and not charge us out the wazoo for doing it) The cake wasn't thousands of dollars either!
I went to a wedding reception last week that had cupcakes from Sweet Things instead of cake. I'm not ashamed to say I ate four of them! TO. DIE. FOR. I wish this place were closer.
The day of my wedding, I pick up the cake- it's the wrong design. Then one of the owners came out to talk to me. An older blondish/white haired lady. When I told her it was supposed the icing and style wasn't what I ordered for my wedding cake, she said with a stone face "so so you not want it then?". Mind you my wedding was in 3 hours.I asked if it could be fixed. She said no bc her cake artist wasn't in (again in a stone cold tone). My friend who were with me were appalled with this poor service. This old lady was heartless, and offered no suggestions to fix it. Then when I cut the cake at the wedding, I discovered that they screwed up the flavors of the cake. They weren,t what I ordered and the cake was so dry!!! Most of the guests didn't finish their cake. I would stongly reccommend you stay away from this place if you need a cake for a special occassion.
OMG -- the best black and white cake and it is a must! It's a decadent cake for birthdays or special occasions. They also will do custom frostings if you order in advance. If you don't want to trek to Tiburon you can get some of the baked goods inside the Cal-Mart Store at 3585 California Street in San Francisco.
I've been hearing people rave about this place for years, so I decided to go try it out.
It was just okay. It wasn't memorable, but I haven't really found a Bakery that is. I got the raspberry Bars, which were good, but a bit salty. I love raspberry bars and couldn't find them for a long time, so I'm glad at least I found a place. My husband got the tres Leche cake.
He did not like it at all. It was way too sweet. We both got hot chocolate and it really pisses me off when I see people using powdered chocolate. You can spend a little bit more money and get syrup. I hate hate hate powder. It taste very gritty and powdery.
I like the atmosphere of the place. It's very cute. I wanted to buy a little book about 100 greatest dogs in history.
I would go back for a raspberry bar and possibly try some other deserts. I didn't really see anything mouth watering.
I bought almost 200 cupcakes here for my wedding and our guests said that they were better than getting the usual fondant covered wedding cake. My favorites are the black and whites and the red velvet cupcakes...yummmmmmmmmy and moist every time!!!!!! The prices are very reasonable ($2.10-$2.25 each) and the cupcakes are a good size so you don't feel like you are getting ripped off. They also give you a 10% discount if you order more than 100 pieces.
I love... just love... simply LOVE the cupcakes!!! The buttercream frosting is to die for... the cake is soft and moist.... it's my "go to spot" for quick sweet fix after lunch
Would love to know more about their baking/ingredients etc. But DAMN, if these aren't the tastiest little cupcakes ever !!
THE best carrot cake I've ever had. Frosting that you don't tire of quickly; carrot & coconut that is the perfect sweetness, without an instant stomach ache; amazing cake! I've got to try other flavors there.
Very good. My family who lives out of town goes nuts for this place. Burn buttercream cookies are amazing.
I LOVE this bakery. The best in the Bay Area when it comes to cakes and cupcakes. No one beats their Black Magic Cake, which is my personal favorite, but their carrot is to die for as well. I bake myself and have the highest esteem for their goods. Plus i find their staff friendly and personable. Go. Try it. You will LOVE it as well. I promise.
AMAZING! I wish they opened at 7:00 a.m. instead of 7:30, so I'd have time to pop in before work! I adore the cheese wafers! The "Desperately Seeking Chocolate" cake is_____________. There is not a word that does it justice!
my only complaint is that they are pretty pricey, but their cupcakes and cookies are so delicious that it's worth it (once in a while).
