Walked in here last weekend and the place was busy as always.  There were two people ahead in front of me which is a plus.  Usually there are a lot people in line no matter what time it was.  Since they were making the dumplings fresh--from experience I know that it will be a while before I get it so I opted for either the Pork Fried Buns or the Beef Pancake.  I chose the Beef Pancake because fortunately, it didn't run out that day.  At most it took about 5 minutes of waiting.  I was quite pissed at the person who had cut in front of me as I was about to place my order though...

Inside of the Beef Pancake was filled with juicy beef, carrots, and pickled radish which was quite tasty and filling.  Feel free to check out the pics I took with it.

Was working in the neighborhood and discovered this place was just a few blocks away.  Suddenly had a craving for dumplings - well, that's what happens.

Ordered eight steamed chives dumpling ($2.00) and a sesame pancake (.75).  The dumplings were better than average, with lots of vegetables, and the pancake was hot and had tons of sesame seeds.  No Sriracha but a sauce with peppers was available, and that was great.

This place has a decent amount of seating, so it's easy to stay and enjoy your food without feeling cramped.  The people who work here are friendly and although there was always a line, it moved quickly.

About sixteen soups are available here, including some very interesting ones, such as peanut, sweet dough, salted dough and sour vegetable with either rice or white noodle.  Must find out if any of them are vegetarian.

Great place to visit if in the neighborhood.

We always remember our first time and Sweet Spring was my first Chinatown dumpling experience many years ago.
Their fried dumplings & fried buns (bao) made for great comfort food when I was in the area.
This place is also one of my stops on my East Chinatown dumpling crawl with my co-workers.

These days the fried dumplings are a little more salty & greasy compared to other dumpling places that have popped up around Chinatown so taste it before adding the sauces!

I still stop by for their little fried buns (which they now charged $1.50) because you always remember your first experience.

I was browsing through trough records at Downtown Music Gallery, and decided I would get an order of dumpling while I'm in the area.  I chose Sweet Spring, because it was only 4 blocks from DMG, and the reviews were good.  I wanted some type of veggie dumplings and scallion pancakes.  They were out of scallion pancakes by 12:15pm/.  I was disappointed, they would be out so early in the day.   So, I just got the dumplings.  They were very fresh dumplings. The dumpling itself, was very thin, the way I like it.    The price was really cheap, which is great. In fact their entire menu, is really inexpensive.

The only thing that concerned my about Sweet Spring, was their Grade from the Dept of Health.  I understand that a restaurant's grade can change in a couple of weeks, so by now they may have earned a higher grade.  But, when I went it was a C.

We came here because this is where Bret and Jermaine from Flight of the Conchords eat everyday. (It's a manly not as fruity version of Glee kinda TV show)

They have 5 dumplings for only $1.25 which is an awesome deal. They were very good AND made to order. Dumplings came out fresh and delicious and in a timely manner also.

Cheap and delicious! What more could you want?

This is by far the place with the best dumplings I ever had!  I have a feeling it's the vinegar sauce that they give you.  It is very different from the other dumpling stores, taste like they added sugar in it, but it's still o sooo good.

The sesame pancakes are also very good but they tend to run out pretty quickly.

The vegetable dumpling is really interesting.  It taste really bland in my opinion, but I marvel at the fact that with one bite, you can see that the filling is truly made out of vegetable.

The steamed pork dumplings are also very good, but I always tend to come back for the pan-fried dumplings.  I like the way it retains its shape and you get that small crisp-consistency when you bite into it rather than the soft feeling of biting into a steamed dumpling.

The fried & steamed dumplings (each $1.25/order) are okay b/c I'm left feeling thirsty.  Otherwise, its dumplings are consistently hot & delicious.  The steamed dumplings were unexpectedly greasy and too much bread.  Why would "steamed" dumplings be greasy?  They looked & were pan-fried. I would expect the fried dumplings to be greasy.

I still come here cuz of location and price.  It's a snack that'll tie my over to the next meal.

Good corner spot for cheap, humble Chinatown eats.

The dumplings and various buns are usually too greasy for my taste, but the bean congee and homemade hot unsweetened soy milk always manage to warm my cold interior.

PROTIP: Pick up a hot soy milk from Sweet Spring, then go next door and pick up an egg custard tart from Manna One Bakery. Consume immediately. Thank me later.

this is a legit fuzhounese style dumpling store. there are a few tables to eat in, and the dumplings, baos, noodles, fj wontons are all delicious for a cheap meal and for a meal on the go. they make everything quick and before you know it you're full and you've overordered because everything was just so cheap you want to eat it the whole menu.

The only thing I've ordered here are the dumplings.  They're okay.  For $1.25 you get 5 dumplings which make a decent snack.  I wish they left the dumplings on the wok longer or cranked the fire up more to get a crispier bottom.

Be careful if you take them to a workplace where it's mostly non-Asians: they'll either like the smell or think it's awful.  My one coworker sat near my dumpling container and thought a rat died near the desk.  But then the next week he asked what I was eating because it smelled good.  ::Shrug::  The city recently gave them a 'C' grade.  I'm astonished by that.  I imagine you would have to intentionally leave a mess in the kitchen to get a 'C'.  A quick run-through with a Swiffer and a spritz of Febreeze would've earned them at least a 'B'!  C'mon guys. Try a little!

I'll have to try the other things like the pork buns and soy milk one of these days.  Their peanut noodles seem to be really popular.

    Pros: Cheap, fast, filling.
Cons: sub-par crispiness on the dumplings, EVERYTHING is served on styrofoam.  Chinatown needs a serious lesson on conservation and recycling.

    GREASY!

But I do like their Pork buns which I think has pork belly in it. IT IS SO GOOD! Blot the oil off.

I think the fried pork dumplings are a bit nasty though. Too greasy and the meat is awful.

The fried pork buns are yummy here. Also blot before you eat! Gosh. I hate work while you eat though!

it's quick and inexpensive. It's okay.

    I adore Sweet Spring Restaurant.

I'm very familiar with Flushing's Chinatown and the touristy part of Manhattan's Chinatown, but for whatever reason I've always just sort of shyed away from this particular part of Chinatown, the Real Chinatown -- but what better excuse could there be than cat-sitting just around the corner for my friend and her husband while they're out of town for the holidays.

This was my first foray into the various eateries of the immediate environs, mainly because they were the only place with English translations on the menu, but also because it's very affordable and looks like a very comfortable and cozy place...

I've eaten here four consecutive days in a row now: pork bok choy bun, eight precious noodles, peanut butter noodles, steamed pork cabbage dumplings, steamed pork bok choy dumplings, fried pork cabbage dumplings, shredded pork with pickled cabbage noodles, plain congee, beef pancake, fried taro, fried scallion donut, steamed bean strout bun, hot and sour soup...

Honestly, everything is really really delicious, and for the cost you just can't beat it -- it's leagues better than Prosperity or Vanessa's, and honestly it's just not even fair to compare them -- they're entirely different worlds -- when you're here it's like being part of a family, you see them preparing everything fresh, you see them washing the dishes and cooking the food, they bring your food to you and when you leave they come up and clean up your dishes and wipe down the table...

My recommendation: do what everybody else is doing, start off with a steamed bun (give it a couple pats with a napkin) and or a fried bread/cake, then get a noodle soup (some people add in sambal, others add in vinegar, others add in white pepper, others add soy sauce), then get some dumplings, then finish off your meal with a small fried treat... All of this for under $5 --  you'll be stuffed to the gills and completely satisfied.

Also, I find it surprising how many real Chinese people come in here and order large amounts of food to take home and feed their families -- that's when you know it's really Authentic!

Fantastic place. My party of four ordered a good ten items, and payed $4.50 each. Our piles of dumplings must have made us look like fancy movie stars or something, because multiple street-persons came in to ask us for spare change. They weren't interested in our leftovers though, which may mean something...

Fanboys and fangirls take note: according to my frame-by-frame analysis, the Flight of the Conchords eat here in a few episodes of their HBO show. Uh oh! I just made this place a tourist destination.

sorry to disappoint Li. M, but the fried dumplings are now a dollar twenty-five.  and yes, they are still worth every quarter. the steamed dumplings and soups are tasty if you're looking for healthier alternatives. but don't kid yourself.

    it's chinatown baby.

i used to live in this neighborhood in a converted brothel (just kidding, mom!) with 9 other roommates. i now live in a park slope brownstone. this restaurant makes me miss the brothel.

ps. there are two main ladies who take orders. they don't smile much, but when they do, it's like the sun comes out just for you.

pps. i've never found stains on plates here that i didn't make myself, but regarding ambience, keep your expectations realistic. like most people who come to this (relatively) tourist-free part of chinatown, you should know better than to emphasize form over function.

This is definitely the kind of place that I'd rather keep secret since I know that the more people review this place, the more opportunity they will have to jack up the price.  For now, it remains a cheap hidden gem.

I've only had the fried dumplings and the bao but both are amazing and for the price, there really is nothing better.  It probably rates up there with the $2.50 roast pork rice for best deal in Chinatown (and probably the entire country.)

The bao was really something special.  For $1 you get a pork with vegetables bao and I would say is BETTER than what they serve you at Momofuku for $4.50.  No joke.  Momofuku's is a bit more refined but taste for taste, this bao will hold its own.  Forget all those trendy places where you have to pay an arm and a leg just to get a fatty pork belly bun cause you can just come here and get the same for a buck.

I'm a fan.  Can you tell?

On my way to my grandmother's I would always pass by this little shop and since I've been eating so much dumplings, I thought 'hey why not?' So I stepped into this small little shop that can seat about 10-12 people roughly, which that day when I came here it was full house.

I placed my order for 2 orders of dumplings and a beef pancake to go. Took it to my grandmother's and ate it while watching Chinese soap opera with her. The dumplings were okay. It was crispy, but at the same time it was a bit doughy. I didn't really taste the chives in my dumplings, so it makes me wonder if they had given me another kind of dumplings. The other dumplings I got had bok choy in them, which was okay. The supposedly chives dumplings tasted better than the ones with bok choy. The beef pancake was way too doughy for me. It was a bit bland. But I like the crispiness of the pancake that was filled with sesames.

I wasn't able to finish everything that I had bought. And my grandmother ate sticky rice that she had made and kept asking me to eat more food. Grandmother's are so funny, they think their grandchildren starves when they are not around haha.

I found myself comparing this place to Prosperity Dumpling the whole time I was there.

One point of Sweet Spring that's superior to Prosperity is the fact that you can sit, uncramped, and enjoy a leisurely meal of dumplings and soup. Also the pork filling in the dumplings in our noodle soup tasted far more flavorful than any from Prosperity. And the pork bun -- take a bite and the pillowy rice bun and the sweet and salty pork filling melt in your mouth.

But is it in fact better than Prosperity on the whole? I don't think the question is whether it's better rather than to say that it's a whole other experience. The dumplings have a thicker skin here, more chewy and doughy. There is also no running of greasy juices as you bite into one, so it tastes fresher.

In general I do have a slight preference to the thinner skinned dumplings, and yes, the greasier ones. What can I say?

Roughly a 15 seater, it's a bit small and cramped.

    We ordered:
Fried Dumplings (5 for $1) - They were just okay, nothing to write home about. Seared (with a hard crisp) on the bottom and shoveled for the masses for quick turnover. I tasted cabbage instead of chives in the dumpling meat. Boo.

Forget about trying to justify this place for being an inexpensive hole in the wall. This is as good as food gets. It's how it was intended to be consumed.

Located in the heart of chinatown, south and east of the Bowery, a nonphysical boundary that shields from the waves of tourists marching on through Chinatown like a fortress wall. The wall is all but an illusion.

Sweet spring has been around for close to a decade and has always been serving up the same good food. A great choice of dumplings both steamed and fried, filled with pork, chives, bok choy or any combination, and a long list of soups that seem to be favorites among its clientele.

I've been eating at this place since my days in high school and its always been a similar experience. I just point to the menu for what I want (English optional) and sit down and enjoy the smells and flavors they have to offer.

If you find yourself in Chinatown finding somewhere to eat, which can be extremely overwhelming as there are so many spots to choose from, march on over to sweet spring for a quick bite, I think you'll find yourself impressed.

****4 stars - delicious food, prepared over and over to perfection, amazingly inexpensive even by Chinatown prices, and also open long hours from 7:30am to 9pm at night.

Best dumpling house in the City. It isn't for tourists so you're not going to have to wait on a super long line. However it is for the locals so you may not get served right away and the counter person may not understand you.

But don't let that get in your way. These are great dumplings and are super cheap.

If you're feeling touristy, some scenes from "Flight of the Concords" was filmed here.

A crowded walk through Chinatown, through vendor after vendor, past smelly fish market after fishy smelly market, was well worth it to find Sweet Springs. My brother suggested this spot to me as a must-stop in Chinatown.
They are basically giving away food here. At five dumplings for $1.25, it's the biggest steal this side of the China Sea. The place exudes authenticity. Three workers were hustling about, making food. Everything is made fresh, save for a few breaded items in a display box beside on the counter. I was the only American in the tiny restaurant. It seems to be a local favorite because one elderly man came in, spouted out a few words which I understood to be "the usual", sat down, and immediately received his food. They are fast.
The dumplings are not big, but five of them is good enough for a light lunch on a hot summer day. I chose the Steamed Pork with Bok Choy Dumplings. They arrived, steaming and fresh; no sauce, no nothing, just dumplings. They looked like meat-filled ravioli, only longer instead of square.
The steamed pork was well good, savory, and had a hint of spice. The doughy dumplings surrounded the pork like a think epidermal layer. It was soft, hot, and delicious. Two sauces are offered on the table. One is a dark, sweet sauce that resembles soy sauce in taste, but is thicker. The other is a red pepper sauce. I added both to different dumplings, and was greeted with a world of flavor. The dark sauce brought forth sweetness and tanginess, while the red sauce added a kick of heat.

The place was filthy, but that was part of the experience. Inside the self-serve via spoon sauces on the table were crusted hairs. Yikes. I had them nonetheless, but it was a turn off. They did not offer any drinks other than bottles. I enjoyed the food, but it was not the best Chinese food I have had.

This is the best dumpling joint in all of Chinatown.  You get five fried dumplings (done just right, with the right amount of oil and the right amount of crispiness), free soup, and great sauce (nowhere else will you find sauce like this) for ONE DOLLAR!

But they also have other stuff like steamed dumplings, dumpling soup, noodles, fries, etc.  Nothing is over $5.  And everything tastes great.  The service is magnificent.

Cheaper than a Staten Island prostitute on a Tuesday morning, but I'm finding a plethora (of pinatas) of cheap Chinese Restaurants in Chinatown, so what's the point?

Well it's got to have great food.

Does Sweet Spring have great food...well maybe it does, but I had Dumplings and I had Dumpling Soup with Vegetables....

Both these items are served at Prosperity and are tastier and cheaper.

The soup was very good, but there was hardly any bok choy and the broth just wasn't as awesome as the broth used at Prosperity...I just can't get over how great the broth at Prosperity makes my internal organs and systems feel...and is a Quart for $2.

The dumplings had a thick doughy dough...and granted it was 1/1000 as greasy as Prosperity, but again they were more expensive and half as tasty...NAH, I'll take the excess grease!  It's a cheap snack.

Saving Grace, the Pork Buns! some of the best I've had....Not sweet dough...just right and the pork inside was savory and moist.  With so many other cheap options abound, seemingly within a stones throw, I'm not sure I'll be back here much.

Sure you can sit, but with old Asian Men leaning on the window pane you are starring out and 25 year old Asian Men smacking their lips louder than Lil' John shouting "What?!?" while sitting next to you, again I ask, What's the point?

The only thing that's memorable about Sweet Spring is the woman-behind-the-counter's drawn eyebrows.

    Just kidding.

While I may also remember her by her crankiness, the fried chives and pork dumplings are the most fairest of them all. Yes, they have easily replaced my previous love for Vanessa's Dumplings. For $1.25, you get 5 crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, dumplings. Ask for extra napkins because you will make a mess.

While the area is not as overcrowded (or not crowded at all), let's keep it that way because I'm running out of good places in Chinatown for amazing dumplings!

Eat like a fatty a, for just $5 or $6?  Yes, at Sweet Spring Restaurant, that is possible.

Last month, the Squab and I ate dinner here.  Though they (basically one guy runs the show) ran out of a lot of items, we managed to find things to order.  We had:
    - Fried dumplings: good
    - Shen Jian Bao: good
    - Zajiangmian  (called "8 Treasures Noodles" here): it sucked and we didn't finish it
    - Fujianese swallow dumplings: not good at first, but they're actually very tasty with a thin skin covering a meat/bean paste inside
    - We also had another soupy noodle dish that wasn't good.  Stay away from the noodle dishes here and you'll be fine.

Thank GOD for Chinatown when you want a cheap meal.

Porko and I ate dinner here and tried a bunch of things: fried dumplings (good), shen jian bao (gooood), zajiangmian (I think they call it 8 Treasures noodles in English, we didn't like this much), Fujianese swallow dumplings (yummy...  the skins are very thin, almost like wonton skins, and the inside tastes like a meat/bean paste that is very finely ground.  interesting, and may take some getting used to, but I liked them), soy milk (so so).  They ran out of pork buns and a few other things, I guess it's more of a lunch establishment.

There is plenty of seating and the homemade dumpling sauce is great!  All the food cost us around $12, what a steal!

Corner snack counter, with a good variety of inexpensive delicious Chinese "small eats": dumplings (potstickers and boiled), steamed buns, noodle soups, won ton soup, etc.

The filling for the  pork buns is pretty unique, not the Cantonese-style barbecued pork nor the ground pork and veggies.  I happen to like it.

The people who run the place are from Fuzhou, so they have dishes from there.  I liked the fried taro and fried oyster cake.

Good for breakfast to dinner.  Not much seating though.

This was my wife's and my first official favorite restaurant. A local turned me onto it and it has a following.

Again it's not getting 5 stars because it's paving any bold new culinary directions. It gets 5 cause it delivers in all the ways that it promises to...I wish everything was like that.

The dumplings are great, fried or steamed, even compared to the other great dumplings everywhere else in Chinatown, and they're 5 for a buck, just like all the real places. The pork buns are good. The fried Taro is really good. The "eight-precious noodle" is bezonkers good. The wonton soup is the same as every other restaurant as far as I can tell, but I see tons of Chinese folks eating it so they must know something I don't.  Keep in mind they don't speak English so grab a menu and point or just say the number, they know them all by heart.

NOTE: Across and slightly down the street is a street vendor who does amazing business. His cart has a green awning or skirt I think and, anyway, he's next to the basketball courts during the day. If I could give him his own review I would and I'd give him 5 stars. His chicken and his spring rolls are great. The fried noodles are average. It's cheap as hell and he looks shocked every time I tip him.

I went yesterday, sure it was quite a walk and took about 30 mins to find, but it was worth it. I had steamed dumplings and a pork bun, and egg drop soup. For a small shop with only 3 tables, it sure makes good food. I definately will be coming back.

Five dumplings for $1.25.   And they were fantastic.  You just can't beat that.  I'm definitely coming back here again.  Two of us ate for $10, which included tip (are you supposed to tip?  Why not, I guess.)

It's a hole-in-the-wall place, more like a deli than a restaurant.  Maybe three tables?  You order and pay at a counter, so you could probably just get dumplings to go if you want.  Or you could sit and stuff your face, which is what we did.

Did I mention that the dumplings are awesome?

As far as dumplings go this is second only to prosperity, however they do make their own sauce compared to prosperities watered down sriracha and soy sauce.  The wonton soup is very different from american chinese places as well as from the roast meat restaurants in ctown. Theres very little meat and the wrapper is paper thin and they just slide down your throat.   The pork buns are awesome and may be the best in town.  And WOW the people who work here are sometimes fairly pleasant.  Try finding that at any of the other dumpling joints.

An order of wonton soup and dumplings for a grand total of 3 bucks.  Yeaaaah kid

i have almost had everything on the menu. I particular love their shanghai buns, steamed and fried dumplings. the meat is very savory and juicy, and well balanced by the soft neutral tasting outer layer. and these were super cheap too, there is more seating than prosperity dumpling but it is still quite a small place. both places are comparable, so depends upon what is closer to you.

If you ask my opinion this is my least favorite of all the dumpling houses in my neighborhood. If you really want 5 good dumplings for 1.25 head over to Tasty Dumpling a few blocks away. The dumpling here are very greasy and the sauce for them is sweet not like the regulat dumpling sauces.

I am now a fan.  The fried dumplings are yummy, and flavorful without being overly salty, which is often the case at other dumpling places.  The noodles with bean sauce (jja jiang mian)  were pretty good, but I I had them sitting around for like an hour before I ate them, so I think they would have been better fresh.  But the fact they still tasted good an hour later is pretty impressive.  Lastly, there is the pork bun, aptly named "da rou bao" (big meat bun).  Filled with fatty pork, not like pork that has nasty gristle, but like pork that is meant to be fatty and is oh so good.  I was stuffed after all the food.  And all of  this could be yours for about 5 bucks.    Not a bad deal at all.

I noticed the "C" rating that went up at some point, but hey - so be it. This is my favorite cheap dumpling house. I've been coming here ever since Downtown Music Gallery (great record store) moved from Bowery to Chinatown about 3 years ago. I take my toddler here. You might need to buddy up with someone else at one of the 4-6 person tables, but it's never been a problem for me and part of the charm. 5 delicious, greasy dumplings for $1.25 is a steal. If it's raining, the place has a great Blade Runner-esque feel to it.

I love this place. Sweet Spring has amazing fried dumplings and oftentimes I would go here instead of Tasty Dumpling. $1.25 for 5 pork and chive dumplings taste almost similar to Tasty Dumpling's. But what makes them stand out is the sauce for the dumplings. Whatever vinegar-based concoction it is that I put on my dumplings has a thick, sweet taste that just marries in your mouth. The boiled dumplings' skin is too thick and I didn't really enjoy it. Atmosphere is nothing to look at but what counts is the food. You probably won't get a seat depending on the time but you can get it to go and they'll give you a little container of the sweet sauce.

Came here for the dumplings since all the yelpers were going crazy for the ones they make here. Got the fried pork ones, they were pretty nasty,. They were too doughy and the meat was really bland. I definitely would not come back here for the dumplings.

Got the steamed dumplings, which were just ok, and the stir noodles, which were pretty tasty.  No service with a smile, but I chalked that up to how busy this little place was.  Would recommend and will probably go back.

A place that I would normally walk right by, this dumpling shop is fan-tastic.   Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior.  At a quarter a dumpling, these dumplings pack in the best taste for the price that I've found.  And, if you resist the temptation to eat until you're stuffed to the gills, then you can walk next door to the bakery and get some equally cheap and delicious chinese baked goods.
