5 reviews for Sweet Chef Southern Style Bakery
Ok so I'm walking by this place and I see this truck with pie & cake pictures on it and I'm thinking "dayum I love pies and cakes...who does this pie & cake mobile belong to?" so I look right and there is this seemingly seedy looking store front that is pie & cake free and people free...so I'm now thinking "really...this looks flippin great...I bet they have great pies & cakes!! I need to try this sometime."
Flash forward about 5 days forward. I hear from my friend that he's heard that this place has some great pies & cakes. So I'm sitting home with my roomies and we are all eating our feelings so i decide to go to try out this man...I mean he is only right around the corner from me.
So I get there right before they close I ask for what ever pie they have in mini and I snatch up a brownie so as I prepare to pay for my mini pecan pie, mini apple crumb pie & brownie one of the men say that I should try the banana pudding it's the best...who am I to say no? Yes please!
$8.50 later I get home and...
Oh
My
Goodness
I can not even tell you how amazing this stuff was!! The Banana pudding is a money maker...I would by that in a vat swim in it while eating it that's how good it is. The rest were tasty, but I literally sat there licking every last bit of pudding from the bowl it was so good!
I plan on ordering a white coconut cake for Easter. I am very, very excited.
Seeing that the other reviews for this place were well over a year ago--i think there may have been some changes at Sweet Chef and not for the better.
Overall, i was extremely disappointed and will not go back. Let's start off
with the bread pudding, it was dry, hard and lacked flavor-.Next up, the blueberry pie--although it had nice flavor there was way too much crust and crumb topping and a thin layer of blueberry filling--so really it should be called "pie crust and crumbs" because the blueberry did not have a major presence.
it was just very disappointing and if i'm in the area maybe i would go back and give them the benefit of the doubt--that it was an "off" day--but geez, i was definitely disappointed.
I stumbled across this place one day when I was wandering through the neighborhood. Beyond having great reasonably priced pies, they make one of the best cakes I've ever had. It's a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and it appeared at my bridal shower and then again later at my birthday party.
I love it!
Awesome. Simply awesome cakes and pies. This place is definitely tucked away; you've got know what you're looking for and it's a tiny place. I've had trouble placing orders over the phone - it's usually best to go in and place your order for all sorts of cakes and pies, all listed on a white board up on the wall.
They always have pecan and sweet potato pies on hand, as well as a few other random varities. Their pecan pie is the best I've had in a long time and definitely in the city; it's deep and filled with that wonderfully sweet/fatty goo. No scrimping with a thin pie or small nuts. Sweet chef's cakes are always staples at our birthday parties. The white cake with chocolate frosting is a hit, but I love their carrot cake.
It's definitely not super conveinent for people who don't live nearby, but if you want a killer confection it's the (sugar/fat) bomb.
If you want your friends to invite you back for dinner, bring a sweet potato pie from Sweet Chef when they ask you over the first time. I didn't even like sweet potato pie before I moved around the corner from this little gem of a bakery.
