No sign posted, but the mini cupcakes are vegan...just ask the friendly staff!
Sweet Cakes is a hidden gem (behind a wooden fence) at 935 N. Damen. The welcoming indoor space has a very cute old-timey stove holding napkins and coffee fixins, and the relaxing outdoor courtyard seating area is guarded by a giant horse statue. Both great places to relax with your coffee and treats.
I most enjoyed the mint chocolate chip and s'more mini cupcake flavors. The s'more had a piece of dark chocolate and a delicious graham flavored cake.
It's a perfect Fall Sunday morning in Chicago. People are milling about Sweet Cakes Bakery patio either enjoying their coffee or waiting to get into Jam next door.
I am inside trying to place my order, hoovering around the refrigerated case checking out the cupcakes and mini cupcakes that are "calling to me". My friend is getting impatient as he needs his morning coffee and I am seriously delaying the process.
ME: Is it too early to eat a red velvet cupcake?
HE: If that's what you want- just get it.
ME: Nah- I should just get a brioche and a coffee. But those cupcakes sure look good. But I'm . . . . . just having coffee.
HE: OK, but you know you are going to end up getting that cupcake.
While I hate to say it, he was right. I enjoyed my brioche sitting at the picnic table on the patio and sipping my coffee but kept thinking about those darn cupcakes. So as we were leaving, I ran back inside and bought not one, but 6 cupcakes! Yum! Chocolate, vanilla, red velvet cake, carrot cake - all amazing and heavily loaded with rich, butter cream frosting (and lest you think I can't add- I got two of a couple of them!)
Sweet Cakes is open 6 days a week from 8-6 (closed on Mondays- thank heaven- one day that temptation does not call to me) They also offer free wi-fi if you can still think to type after all that sugar kicks in. Street parking is usually available on Damen or Augusta.
HE: I TOLD you, you were going to get a cupcake.
ME: You're just saying that as you know I can't retort with cupcake in my mouth!
And so we drove in silence until the last morsel of the Red Velvet Cupcake had been savored and enjoyed.
Wednesday is donut day. Yes it surely is.
I know this may sound controversial, but this is the best donut in Chicago. They offer a chocolate and a cinnamon donut, and oh my gosh. My husband is a donut connoisseur and even he agrees. The cinnamon is particularly amazing. He called me from the road announcing that he's coming home with donuts, I made some coffee, and now we are in heaven. Welcome to donut heaven.
Based on the Castille coffee alone, this gets all the stars. Sorry, Star Lounge - I still love you guys, but give me Castille coffee, esp. fresh decaf, and you got me for life. The cupcake FROSTING is the best I've ever tasted. Cakes are really good. Super, super nice owners and staff.
Mostly, it's all perfect. And trust me, I am a real coffee snob. And they have three sizes AND they always brew decaf. Heaven.
I walk there, but parking on Damen or one of the side streets isn't too bad, and definitely worth it.

Nice little outside patio too! The inside is fairly charming too! Not the widest selection you can find but the bakery is VERY GOOD!
The staff is wonderful and pleasant.
One funny thing...does anyone else find the toilet in the restroom to sit awfully low? Or was it me?

What a find. Only a small door on Damen let's you know something great is inside. Once within there is a wonderful tree shaded patio that makes this place worthwhile. Great food and a nice clean interior and staff highten the experience. I recommend it for those who want something a little peaceful.
