Staff is very friendly and oh so helpful and will let you taste anything that you want.
I started out tasting a few really nice flavors - caramelized pear and pumpkin pie. The pear was the front runner until the Vegan Chocolate caught my eye. the nice young lady behind the counter explained it was made with coconut milk etc and this definitely caught my attention.
While I'm not vegan and not close to vegetarian most of the time I opted to try this intriguing flavor.
The velvety texture was the first thing to hit my tongue and it began to sing, and sing loud - I was in love with this small little taste of magic in my mouth. Did I just really say that - magic in mouth - well anyway I'll go on from there.....
The smooth, rich, delicious Vegan Chocolate was simply divine. If all Vegan stuff tasted this good I would so give up meat, in a heart beat. But alas it does not so I'll just have to stick to pulling cheeks off pigs (a story for another time) and loving meat.
But I will surely be back for the Vegan Chocolate ice cream at Sweet Action.Listed in: Yelp 2012 - 100 Reviews…

I DO feel as if I'm getting some tail every time I come here! Or am I double entendre'ing an adage. Either way, it just feels so good to eat their ice cream.
It's been at least a couple years since this place opened and it still is churning out (hardy har har) some of the best ice cream in town. Yup, made in-house. And last I heard, they were incorporating some greenness like using some solar power and getting as much locally sourced, hormone-free ingredients as possible.
Hands down, it is the best vegan ice cream I've had in an ice cream shop (take that, Williamsburg! And L.A.!). They use coconut milk as a base, or at least mix it in with the soy, so you don't get that bland, gritty taste of soy milk. Instead? Sweet and creamy seduction.
They have creative flavors without being absurd or inedible. These rotate so you always are bound for a surprise or some experimentation. Generous portions. And a nice choice of to-go options such as ice cream sandwiches, pints, and popsicles. This is especially great if you're making an evening run and want to grab something for your roomie, S.O., or friend. It probably won't make it back home though.
The interior vaguely calls to mind an old ice cream parlor in its bright-lit interior. The lighting isn't as harsh, though the decor is a little too sparse and sterile for my taste. Seating is fairly limited so if you come during the summer, you may have some alternative perches planned along Broadway to people watch.
They are open fairly late which makes it a great spot for after-dinner or a place to stop by after a bike ride to replenish those poor little burnt up calories for the ride home. Also, it's surrounded by some nifty bars so you can blend that into your night out anyway you want.
Staff runs hot and cold. Some nights are great, others are a little irritating. They are efficient and aware during really busy times, so that's nice.
Diners are a mix of people from the South Broadway Sputnik crowd, to sports fans, to families.
NOTE IF YOU'RE SWINGING BY IN WINTER MONTHS: Check their hours and make sure they're open! E.g., they're closed for January of 2012 and reopen in February.
Absolutely tasty, creamy, and sweet. -
Review from Dale Z.
I am a big fan of Little Man, so I was somewhat skeptical that Sweet Action would be as good. I was very pleasantly surprised. I sampled several ice-creams, and each was a miracle of flavors. I even enjoyed a tasted of the savory "brown butter sage" ice cream. I kid you not, it tasted like turkey gravy. Off-putting? a little. Delicious? definitely. The only one I thought was not great was the Baklava ice cream. But, seriously, they earn points just for making Baklava ice cream. I also noted, but did not sample, the several vegan options.
I finally went with a scoop of the caramelized pear and the salted butterscotch. The pear was delicate, unique and tasty. The salted butterscotch was aggressively in your face with outstanding flavors. This particular ice-cream is one I would love to pair with the salted oreo from Little Man. The staff was friendly, the experience was sound. -

Love the inventive flavors! Tried the green chili ice cream and didn't like it, but my husband loved it. I got the E.T. ice cream (Reeses peanut butter) and chocolate cinnamon. Both were delicious. We went with a friend who is vegan so it was nice for her to have two flavors to choose from (her peanut butter vegan flavor was great).
I wish we had this place in CT! -

I think maybe either I have a BRAIN freeze or perhaps since it was COLD OUTSIDE, I could not really recall of what we order from Sweet Action Ice Cream. Was here with Hubs after our dinner just a few blocks away on Friday October 28th 2011. Time about 19:20hrs ish. I wanted to eat my ice cream in this establishment but Hubs wanted to have it to go instead. Big bummer. Furthermore, there arent many seatings since this place was filled with other patrons that evening.
Hubs ordered the Mint Chocolate Chip, a Chocolate flavor of some kind and another flavor Ice Cream which I entirely forgot. While I also ordered the Mint Chocolate Chip with Chocolate Chile or something. I so wish, that when I order Mint Chocolate Chip, it comes with Chocolate ice cream, the Brown kind instead of the Green Kind of Chocolate.. I guess the green is the mint, right? Oh well.. Hubs had various kind of nuts added to his order of Ice Cream.
All in all its an OK Ice Cream for us. The ice cream was not too sweet, just the way I like it, but it seems lacking of "depth". Though I so wish, one day, I can convinced Hubs to have our ice cream treats to be eaten in this establishment. Note to self, please do remember the correct flavor next time, so can review correctly. Perhaps our review might differ... -

I recently had Sweet Action's "coffee & doughnuts" flavored ice cream for dessert at Steuben's. The "doughnuts" are actual LaMars. This stuff was unbelievably good.
Five stars for Sweet Action, for LaMars and for Steuben's. -

It was cold, but I decided get myself some Sweet Action while in Denver...keep your mind out of the gutter people! But all joking aside, Sweet Action is a great little ice cream shop with tasty vegan options. I was told, by the employees, that they actually make the vegan ice cream there. They generally have two vegan ice cream options and also have 2-3 vegan ice cream sandwich cookies. I noticed that the base used to make the ice cream is coconut milk, which is good but the coconut tends to get overpowering. The chocolate oreo flavored ice cream was very tasty, and so was the vegan sugar cone that it came with. If I lived in Denver, this would be my go-to ice cream shop.

This place is totally delicious. I was blown away by the assortment of flavors, many of which I'd never seen at an ice cream shop before, and the size/cleanliness of the shop. The servers were super-friendly on the several occasions in which we found ourselves here (I may have an ice cream problem) during our recent trip to Denver.
I had a delicious ginger cookie sandwich with vegan blueberry ice cream in the middle and another time got the vegan pumpkin pie in a sugar cone. They were both really good, although I wished that the homemade waffle cones were vegan. Also, while I was really happy with the vegan selections, they were pretty few when compared with the dairy selections. Why not have a few more of those available on any given day? -

I love love love Sweet Action! It doesn't help that it is across the street from a few of my favorite restaurants and they have incredible Vegan ice cream options!
The employees are fun and ice cream is great. They always have two vegan options and I can always find something I love. Chocolate chip, salted butterscotch, they are all great! Just don't forget to add sprinkles! -

I love the uniqueness of their flavors and how real this ice cream is. I must try the giant cookie ASAP! And all the fall inspired flavors! I wish I were closer :( -
Review from Traci K.
One reason, three words: Whisky effin' Brickle. Here's the deal. Local Stranahan's whisky + creamy delicious ice cream + crunchy little sugary bits of love = Amazing.
The ice cream base itself isn't crazy sweet and there's a distinct taste of whisky. Mmmmm. Delicious.
Love that you can try any flavor before committing. All the flavors are super tasty. The red velvet was a standout - chewy pieces of cake mixed into cold creamy ice cream? I mean, who wouldn't love that?
The deal seems to be that they have a rotating list of flavors. All interesting and delightful. (Well maybe not all...there's a green chile pepper ice cream which seemed to be for a more adventurous heart than mine).
The scoops are pretty large, a single is more than enough to satisfy your sweet tooth. The double is slightly gluttonous and I didn't even see the triple. Reeeedonk. -

Molasses ice cream is my new favorite thing. I mean, I've become obsessed with it. Sweet Action has me thinking about this pretty much any time ice cream is mentioned.
Since we got an ice cream maker, we still go to Sweet Action for ideas and a benchmark for quality.
I recommend the whiskey brickle, the after dinner mint, or any other exotic flavor that tickles your fancy. They also have vanilla, for some odd reason. LOL.
I love this place and you will too.
If you see a long line, don't worry, it moves quickly. -
Review from Lynne G.
Yum! I really enjoyed the huge selection of ice cream choices Sweet Action has available. There are seriously, like 24 flavors (homemade!) and they even have vegan ice creams! I had the Stranahan's Whiskey Brickle (YUM!) and red velvet.
Loved the garage door front. Street parking only but there's usually enough turnover on the street to find parking within walking distance. -

Delicious, creative flavors! Busy but worth the wait. We went at probably a "down" time and there were still at least 12 people ahead of us. I tried molasses, salted butterscotch, peppermint, and coffee oreo the first time I went. And I ended up with the coffee oreo. Which was to die for. Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. And the other ones were great too!
Also.... homemade waffle cones. Homemade waffle cones that can compete with Bonnie Brae. That's hard to do.
Otherwise, I like the space, especially the open wall. The only reason we went into Sweet Action was because we smelled the waffle cones. Free advertising for them. It's also really nice on a summer evening because of the location. Staff were a little rude, and not too helpful. Didn't have much to say about their flavors or any suggestions to make, which sucks for me because I'm really indecisive. And how should I know what's good?
None the less, killer ice cream. Will be back. Again. And again... and definitely again. -

I know, I know, revoke my Yelper membership now. I'm not in love with, nor have I ever been fully committed to, the particular brand of ice cream at Sweet Action. I can't put my finger on why, which seems unfair (and possibly immoral, according to some of my friends).
Here's my theory as to why the place never jumps out at me like, say, a Liks or a Little Man might:
The ambiance. Don't get me wrong, I've always had great service here, but the set up of the restaurant seems less-than-inviting to me. More often than not, I'd sooner wander on down drunkard row (read: Broadway) than stick around the sterile interior of Sweet Action. The place just feels more chloroformed than cozy to me.
The consistency. My natural inclination is to compare homemade ice cream, like the kind found at Sweet Action, to their store bought counterparts. This is probably fallacy, but in my experience, the stuff at SA is always left wanting in terms of construction. Watered down and desaturated, I never find my tastebuds on full tilt while chowing down on a cone from Sweet Action. On the flavor scale from 'gelato' to 'mall fro-yo', I usually find them to be closer to the latter.
The flavors. Lastly but most importantly, this is the factor that keeps Sweet Action in the minor leagues for me. Admittedly, my opinion of ice cream is along the lines of 'frozen variations on a 'Chocolate' theme', so I'm biased. If you're looking for fruity (literally/figuratively) or cute flavor combinations to mix things up, you're in the right place. But if, like me, you're just trying to 'lick the pain away', then the flighty flavors may fall short of satisfying your calorie cravings.
No hard feelings, Sweet Action. You seem to pack 'em in, and I know that I'm in the minority in thinking you're less than the best in Denver desserts. But as long as I'm spoiled by two (!) Liks locations in my regular haunts, you'll always be a single scoop stop to me. -

As one walks in Sweet Action Ice Cream the colors on the walls are friendly and welcoming, they have a couple chairs that are normal height. Then they have a large area that has higher seating that opens up to the street and one can stop and have a conversation with someone outside or someone inside. It's a great way to make new friends from people passing.
The day I went it was raining so I was concerned if they would be open on a rainy day. I have hear about Sweet Action for sometime as I have friends who are vegan and finally I decided to try it.
It's right near public transportation as yo can off of one bus, cross the street if you are going south on Broadway and go about a block down and your there.
The time I went I was nervous to try vegan ice cream and I kept thinking to myself how in the world is this possible.
They had between 10-15 different flavors to choose from and they give samples if you ask for one or more, just say please.
The staff here are friendly and helpful and know about half of the ice cream that was in the store. I decided to try two flavors as I was unsure when I would be returning Sweet Action as I am not vegan and its not my neighborhood. I will take friends who are vegan here to show them some great ice cream.
I had a good overall experience from the staff to the ice cream and would suggest tying it even i you have never tried vegan food, as there is a big misconception that vegan food is bad and Sweet Action is a great way to prove differently that vegan can taste good.
My only downfall about this place is the price per scoop or the price to take home a pint. It is a bit high, but I do understand why they can do it, they are the only vegan place in the city that serves ice cream that I know of. -
Review from Tim K.
For now I'm going to buck the rating trend and give Sweet Action just 2 stars, even if their ice cream flavors are inventive, their t-shirts rad, and their name pretty cool.
Some friends told my wife and I over and over again how incredible Sweet Action was, so this past weekend on our Denver adventure we made sure to stop in. I loved the bright and eclectic artwork, and the large space. The bar at the front overlooking Broadway was great too.
I made the mistake of second guessing myself on my ice cream choice. I opted for the Peanut Butter Pretzel (which was just ok) when I really wanted the Stranahan's Whiskey ice cream. Yes, you read me right... WHISKEY ice cream.
$2.50 for a single scoop. And by "single" they really mean kid's size. I'm used to the peeps at Little Man who serve up a mean "single", one where you can even ask for two flavors. Not so here at Sweet Action.
I might stop in if I'm in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip for it. The only Sweet Action was what I had back at my hotel room that night. -

The phrase "Sweet Action" make me think of sex and not ice cream. Five stars for the name alone.
I had the salted butterscotch (delicious.) I want to try Colorado Sweet Corn (wft?) and the Blood Orange Sorbet. -

Went here with my wife, my two babies and my parents for a Saturday evening treat after an afternoon at Wash Park. Perfect end to a beautiful Colorado day.
Sweet Action lives up to its name! Loved the open garage door counter thing - really fun to sit and eat ice cream and watch the cars on Broadway go by.
Lots of great flavors. Would love to go back and try more of them, but I had strawberry, and my wife had the salted butterscotch. Really really good!! -

I've seen Sweet Action featured on The View and everyone who lives here tells me this is THE place to go for icecream.
Went here on a Saturday night and of course the line is out the door. But it only took 10 minutes to get my icecream! Woo hoo for fast service.
Love the daily flavors. They range from regular mint chocolate chip to crazy whiskey brickle! Love that they MAKE their own icecream here as well.
I ended up getting the cherry oreo and the peanut butter chocolate pretzel flavors.
Cherry oreo was so good. Creamy with chunks of oreo cookies but with the tartness of the cherry shining through. The peanut butter flavor was good too but dare I say that Ben and Jerry's does it a bit better? I felt like it was just...sweet and not "salty" enough.
Overall I was pretty impressed with the flavor selection, fast service, and creaminess of the icecream.
But as for the title of "best icecream" in Denver? Not quite sure....I'm still a fan of Lik's!
I do want their tshirts there though! -

Small batch ice cream at its best!
Rotating flavors, only local and natural ingredients, no artificial flavors or colors. They also have at least 2 vegan flavors at any given time.
Try the wacky flavors, the staff is very helpful and will provide as many samples as you need to help you make your decision.
The reviewers who say this ice cream is over priced have been consumer whores for too long. Go get your $2 artificial gallon of crap from the walmart, and cover it with your high fructose corn syrup. -
Review from leah o.
I'm not a huge ice cream fan, so when a friend from out of town was looking for that specifically I (reluctantly) was like, "..... fiiiiiine."
But nutmeg ice cream? Strawberry rhubarb crumble? Vegan green tea? Colorado honey? I mean, goddamn Sweet Action, ambitious much?
And everything rocked. I walked out of there with a double scoop of (cheap!) ice cream, ate the entire thing, and didn't feel like I was going to have a pancreas attack. It's ice cream, but it's not so sugary and rich that you feel trashy after eating it.
Solid. Going back again soon. -
Review from Alexisse R.
North Kingstown, RI
I'm all about chocolate chip - not mint chocolate chip, not chocolate chip cookie dough, and not cookies in cream. Vanilla chocolate chip. Period.
HOWEVER... if there's an ice cream shop that can get me to try new flavors, Sweet Action is the only one thus far. Even when my favorite ice cream is "scooping", I've tried other flavors and have never been disappointed. Pomegranate sorbet is absolutely genius.
The atmosphere is laid back at Sweet Action which I consider another plus. Who wants ice cream that's both hoity and toity? Not this girl.
In short, Sweet Action is a great place for a cool treat. My only complaint (and it won't take away from the five star rating) is that the word is out. I've seen the line go out the door on a hot summer night. It's better than good stuff.
Believe it. -

We were in the neighborhood having dinner at Deluxe and decided that I must simply stop at Sweet Action and remedy the situation of not trying this ice cream. On the night that I stopped in, I had samples of blackberry lavender, Stranahan's whisky brickle and a pecan praline flavor. All were winners and I took home a cup with all three flavors. The blackberry lavender was heavenly and I am in love.
There was quite a variety of unique flavors. The location is on S. Broadway sandwiched in between several shops. The storefront is quite busy, so get there early or be prepared to wait. You can't go wrong with the ice cream here.Listed in: Fro-yo, Ice cream and other…

How utterly fabulous that one finds yet another great, local, ice-cream shoppe in our fair city?
* This place is as much of an institution in my books as Little Man.
* The garage windows that open weather permitting.
* The maddeningly original flavours are tempting. Earl Grey anyone? How about Garam Masala? Or Ginger, with sweet, soft chunks of the root for added depth?
* Huge selection with changing flavours.
* The service is fast & friendly - makes up for the lack of parking anywhere remotely near.
* Oh, and most local gourmet stores sell their more popular flavours - YAY! So, I don't have to drive to the store and hunt for parking on a busy night!

Fantastic spot for people watching. The place has an overall great vibe and the fresh ice cream will keep you coming for more.
Shakes a little on the expensive side (~$5) and tend to melt quite fast, but you get three scoops of your choice and it's always fun to experiment with flavors on a hot Summer day.
Speaking of assortments, they've got great options for all you vegan folks, but still is enough to please us non-vegans. My favorite is the Cherry Oreo - mixed in with some chocolate and other goodies.
Plus, it's on South Broadway next to all those cute boutique stores and stuff. Ice cream and shopping? This is the 'duh' moment you've been waiting for. -

What I like most about the ice cream here is what kept me from giving it five stars the first time:
Its subtlety.
The flavors aren't overpowering nor sickeningly sweet. It's so fresh and good and simple. Even when I eat half a pint, I don't feel like barfing.
That right there is worth the extra star.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Ahoy amigos!
On my recent trip to the Mile High City, I ate some ice cream.
Sweet Action Pros:
-Open SUPER late for an ice cream place, and very experimental with flavors. Don't go here if you're not willing to try some new flavors, because the wacky flavors is what they do best.
-Located right in the heart of hipster Denver. But also a safe and fun area for families.
-Very creamy and thick. A good in between of gelato and froyo.
-All the iced cream is homemade, made with love, and mama you can taste it!
Sweet Action Cons:
-No, it's not healthy for you. Go to Pinkberry if you are looking for that.
-The only reason Sweet Action doesn't get the full 5 stars for me is because it's not A) more community oriented (they do a wonderful job but could always step it up an notch) and B) the decor is vague, and needs to feel more inviting.
Otherwise a perfect ice cream destination in a hip area with GREAT hours! -

Horchata Horchata where for art thou Horchata
I have been waiting for this flavor for 3 weeks. The team at Sweet Action was EVER SO AWESOME to get this flavor made for me during my 5 week stint in D-Co.
I am sad to report that it did not live up to my expectations. It was still good but I was expecting a completely different texture (more icy like the consistency of their Chai opposed to the creaminess that it was). The flavor was also really mild but I think it didn't stand out bc the ice cream itself was so creamy. BUT.....
AMEN 5 Spice was available on the same day as I paired that with the Horchata and got the spice profile I was searching for. So 5 Spice + Horchata = REAL Horchata. But A for effort!
Oh and the Cinnamon Bun.... dude...... sooooo good!

Holy Crap, this place has the best ice cream ever! Bonnie Brae - eat your heart out!
As a DU alum, I was a dedicated Bonnie Brae ice cream lover. Sure, I enjoyed Liks, but they are still cash only, and as a lady who is strictly all about the credit cards (come on, cash does not give me free airline miles!!) Bonnie Brae was my go to.
Until I had Sweet Action Ice Cream.
And then my life changed for the better. Colors were more clear, the sun was shining only for me, and I had a skip in my step.
If you have not tried them yet, I swear, you need to drop what you are doing right now and go. The flavors are delectable and different (think rose lavender ice cream) but totally still delicious. I really am not a super adventurous eater, but this ice cream is so good that it makes me want to try all types of flavors.
Did I mention the ice cream cookie sandwiches? I bought 4 of them when I was there, and my boyfriend at 3 of them before we even got home. This is AFTER we had 2 scoops of ice cream each. The cookies are so freaking good, and (of course) the ice cream makes the whole sandwich. You can even get a HUGE ice cream cookie sandwich for a birthday cake.
Sweet Action - your only fault. You are closed in December. And all I wanted for my birthday was this huge ice cream cookie sandwich. Of course, us Christmas birthday kids are used to getting screwed, so I just had to wait. But, it was worth it. -

Just awesome. Not only is the ice cream killer and reasonably priced (especially considering the quality), but the employees don't pester you to try samples of this and that and the other before you buy.
Compare this to the numerous gelato and fro-yo places in town that seriously will not just serve you something until you've tasted a small portion of it on one of those creepy little spoons. I mean, you could choke on one of those things...somehow.
Thank you sweet action for respecting a customer who knows what he wants. -
Review from yokes f.

Hm... I really really wanted to be blown away by their ice cream because of their popularity but... I wasn't. Don't get me wrong, their ice cream is good. It just isn't "OH MY GOD" kind of good like how I felt when I first tasted Sweet Cow's Maple Grapenut ice cream. As creative as their flavors sound at Sweet Action, once you try it, they all taste surprisingly ordinary. So my verdict is, this place IS good but not amazing. It needs a little umph. I don't know what it is. It's like, they have good, fun ideas, but their flavor profiles aren't quite there yet. Like their trying to take it to the next level but it's hanging in limbo. I do love that they give you nice hearty scoops though. And I did enjoy their waffle cone a lot actually. It was really good. Crispy and light.
I tried their Salted Butterscotch (pretty normal), Brown Sugar Banana (doesn't taste as cool as it sounds but the banana pieces in there were delicious and soft. not those stone hard frozen bananas.) and the Almond Chip (the gelato at Two Spoons in Boulder does better nutty flavors). I haven't tried the other flavors so I might change my mind later but so far, "Ok" is how I feel about this place. But they do have good service. -
Review from Cheri P.

Huh! I guess I'm not as easy to delight as many of the other reviewers before me.
I liked, not loved the salted butterscotch ice cream. The waffle cone same as any waffle cone, nothing special here at all. The Oreo ice cream take it or leave it.
The atmosphere, whole in the wall. I kind of liked the open air counter at the front of the store but there isn't anything to view. An open air counter on to a busy major thoroughfare to me is pointless. So, if you like looking at all the smashed gum blobs on the sidewalk that have turned black over time and love the smell of car fumes you are in luck cause Sweet Action may very well cause an orgasm for you. Me not so much. Maybe they hope most of their clientele are stoned (several pot shops in the area) and will think the street right in front of them is the ocean.
The price is definitely a draw back. I can buy two to three half gallons of Ice cream at the grocery store that would last me two to three weeks, for what we paid for two double scoop waffle cones. And the atmosphere at home 1000 percent better than at Sweet Action.
Not worth the trip, pricey and just okay ice cream. Selection okay ice cream wise. Topping wise the selection is poor.
And not opening until 1:00 PM on Sunday. Really! If you go broke in a year just think about the two to three extra business hours you could have had every Sunday. Winter I get it, but 90 degrees plus on Sunday in the summer and you don't open until 1:00PM. Brain Damage from brain freeze perhaps!?
