Boynton Beach, FL
Okay so the location is not the most comfortable neighborhood, but it is well worth the trip if in the area.
There are a ton of vegan treats here. I bought the marshmallows out of the cooler. They have vegan noodle meals, vegan jerky and other awesome snacks.
My friend is a big music buff, so he enjoyed searching through the music. I loved the treats.Listed in: Miami Adventures, Music Venues

Miami Beach, FL
After two years of not having a car and being limited in my leaving of South Beach, I finally bought a scooter. Being able to get to Sweat Records is one of the reasons why.
Music store (CDs and RECORDS!!!) and local live music venue.
Vegan cafe (LOVE their chai made w/ almond milk) and seller of vegan snacks & treats (for example, vegan jerky, Sweet & Sara Marshmallows, and the not edible, but still awesome, Hurraw! Lip Balm!)
Supporter of local artists (I bought my wallet there--http://www.friendswith...).
And most important to me, home of the monthly Vegan Waffle Party. Thank you, Lolo, for starting this tradition. Not only is it a great way to network with like-minded people, it's super fun and super yum.
I know I'm playing up the Vegan aspects of this, but Sweat Records (and the waffle party) is for EVERYONE. Not just vegans. You should go check it out today!Listed in: Favorite MIAMI Vegan & Vegan…

There are few retail destinations a time traveling Alligator from Space would bother with besides his usual Zorg repair shop, but when it comes to Earth, this one location is the one that I prefer to make a detour to and grab the best cup of coffee (my personal GOD CUP), pick up a new record for the Quothmobile Compact Disc player, and on a regular occasion - watch some of the best local acts from Earth via Miami Florida.
Sweat Records has made it their mission to bring musical, cultural, community richness to an otherwise questionably existent outskirt of this dimension. I whole heartedly support the establishment and look down upon any perpetrator of wrong doing against it or their owners: LoLo & Jsin. They have made Earth a better place by providing an asset to this city of Miami. Much Love and Karma~!Listed in: Best of Miami

Miami, FL
This place is more than a music store.
Aside from housing great music (not only cds, but vinyls and I think even tapes) Sweat hosts concerts, stand up comedy nights, poetry readings, movie nights, sunday morning pancake get togethers, etc.
There is also an assortment of clothing, art, vegan- friendly food, packaged snacks, freshly baked snacks, tea, hot cocoa and coffee available for sale.
P.S. If Raffa is playing at Sweat, hope she brings her famous vegan chili with her. Buy some if you get the chance. Bring cash. You won't regret this. You're welcome. -

Not a lot of places like this in Miami. such a shame.
GREAT merch. records galore. also, accessories and food items.
Nylon Magazine hosted a great secret show here with some awesome local talents. and i finally got to see Afrobeta.
totally took advantage of the $3 rum and cokes, flyers, and "free stuff" bin where i found an unopened "Last Sunday" DVD and some free movie tickets :)
wait....
i THINK it was a free stuff bin...?Listed in: rhythm of the night

Review from Carla L.
I never thought that I could find something similar to Ear-X-Tacy (in Louisville) here in Miami! Oh joy. We did. Well, we didn't 'find' it, Carlos S. took us here.
We were looking for vinyls for my daughter who is obsessed with indie and older music and is a member of the Vinyl club in her H.S. Unfortunately they didn't have Lush which is what she was looking for but it didn't matter, we were in heaven. They truly have a cornucopia of items for the music lover including magazines, band t-shirts and cute gifts.
The best part is that my daughter struck up a conversation with the sales girl who happened to have the same color as Miki Berenyi (lead singer for Lush) and lo and behold she too is a Lush fan. My daughter was thrilled.
Great place! -

Brooklyn, NY
I was so happy to have a chance to visit this place. It's right in the middle of Little Haiti, which is mostly full of small, independent Haitian & Caribbean restaurants and groceries. Sweat Records is an actual record shop so I didn't recognize it immediately (I was looking for a cafe) but once I was in, I loved the ambiance. The lady working behind the counter was really laid back and friendly and had some good recommendations for other vegan-friendly food in the area.
As the vegan empanadas are the only savory item, that's pretty much what I got. The day I was in, they offered curry (lentils and potato, I believe), and spinach. Both were good but nothing to brag about. I don't think they had enough flavor to stand on their own but probably would have been really good with a sauce. I also picked up a container of Sweet and Sara chocolate biscotti, which I've never seen before (and I live in NY, where the company is based!). The biscotti was only $5 for the whole pack, which was a good deal. -

Pound for Pound one of Miami's greatest cultural centers! This place is so much more than a music store!
Music Movie Mondays, a comedy stand up open mic aka Casa de Haha, a book club, a live music venue, and oh yeah they sell music, videos, magazines, and coffee. Not to mention you can usually pick up tickets to cool concerts in the South Florida area here.
The owners are usually there and are friendly and uber enthusiastic and supportive of the arts in Miami.Listed in: Write On, Holiday Shopping

I am very glad that Miami supports a place like this. Nice selection of alternative/indie CD's and Vinyls that are otherwise hard to find down here, and I can't wait to try some of the coffee shop treats or come out to one of the events. Staff is super knowledgeable without being pretentious, so you don't have to be an all-out hipster to enjoy this place. Shitty neighborhood, but you'll survive.

21 reviews, 4 and a half stars... I'm like, I HAVE to see this place.
The only people here right now are workers, oh and me. Here's the thing though.
2 awesome happenstances took place in my life today. I was driving around and ended up on Dixie HWY which is f---ng awesome. I am a certified traveler now. As a matter of fact, I kind of like it. I don't think I will stop here in south Florida permanently. So here's the thing; I have worked on Dixie HWY. I have driven on Dixie HWY and lived very close to it for a good portion of my life.
Today, on the other end of the United States from where the Dixie HWY I know was, I ended up driving on my beloved highway once again. As a matter of fact I wasn't aware that it was Beloved until just today. ;) Absence makes the heart grow fonder.
And then the second thing, of course, is that I found this place which was pretty cool It's totally misplaced. It reminds me of something that should be in Downtown Ferndale or maybe more in Downtown Detroit somewhere, maybe even Hamtramck.
It's the rock and roll, indie style coffee shop. They only have an espresso maker but my Americano is quite good.
There are incense burners on the tables here - HUGE plus. I see couches, CDs, Records, Concert Flyers, T-Shirts and shit you would only see in this place - Oh and the Giant Artist's sketch of Iggy Pop - Totally cool. I mean, how much cooler than A coffee-shop that had Iggy Pop as the guest of Honor at a Fundraiser so they could buy air conditioners.
True Story.
If you are from Detroit, can fund a coffeeshop/record store, and are a risk taker; oh, and you have an excellent head for business and know how to make things work, I would prop something just like this up next to the Majestic maybe.
I dunno. If you're like me, and have a taste for the indie scene or you just love music or cool coffee-shops, I would mos-def check this place out. -
Review from Marcos R.
Terrific little record shop/cafe right next door to Churchill's. These folks really care about good music and the local music scene in general.
They dj at local clubs, they promote local shows, they have shows in their shop, and they have readings and show music oriented movies at their shop too.
They do a lot to foster the music scene here in Miami. So give Sweat Records your business!!
You'll be glad you did : )) -

Miami, FL
As others mentioned, the only privately owned music shop in Miami worth going to.
They sell Cd's, LP's, books, magazines, DVD's, coffee, tea, and tasty treats among other things
There is wifi available and plenty of seating including comfy couches.
The staff is very friendly and are involved in the local music scene i.e. Fridays @ The Vagabond.
Sweat records hosts live music on select dates. They also have a weekly movie night (on mondays) and a book club (on wednesdays).
Oh yea, I'm also addicted to the better than sex bars they sell there for $2 Dollars. They are like crack!
Update 9/15:
I regret to inform everyone that sweat records was broken into a few nights ago. They will be open sporadically throughout the week for now. Make sure to call before you go. Now is an even more important time to support this local all-in-one music stop -

Miami, FL
This is one of the greatest spots in all of Miami. Its right next to Churchills-- pretty much making this little corner the heart of the Miami music scene. They always have free events like in store shows, game nights, arts and crafts, and movie nights and they have a lot of cool stuff for sale. Its really the only place I know of where I can buy local music unless I get it straight from the band.
So why just four stars? This place is in the middle of a horrible neighborhood. Once you get off the expressway its time to roll up your windows and lock your doors. Luckily there are plenty of loyal patrons of both Sweat and the neighboring Churchills to keep the street corner populated on Friday and Saturday nights so as long as you stay put you aren't likely to run into any trouble. If you need to go across the street to Walgreens for a gatorade or something, go with a group. Other than that stay put.
Hopefully that won't deter you too much though. Sweat is awesome and everyone should go whether its to buy a record or just to hang out and see a show.
Whats the BEST thing about Sweat? The free stuff box. Its usually got a few good posters in it. Also demos and little nicknacks.
Strongly recommended for any music lover or anyone looking to get into the local music culture. -

Sweat is more than just a music store! You can find great vinyl, books DVDs that the only other place you're gonna see them in Miami is on http://amazon.com!
Their book club is fun and reads great contemporary books, and will give you a chance to meet some of the most interesting people in Mia's music community.
They always have great events, such as stocking stuffer parties during the holidays, Pure Imagination, Casa de Ha Ha and much more.
But my favorite thing Sweat and brought into my life is their email blast. It pretty much list anything worth looking into going on in Miami!
I heart Sweat Records!Listed in: Where to meet for "we met on…

Great Snacks!! I love jerky and they have SOY, Shitake Mushroom and Seitan jerky which are super yummy and VEGAN. The coffee is really good too better than starbucks.
And their sweet treats are vegan cookies and vegan cupcakes which you would not believed they are vegan. YUM YUM YUMMY all of them. I believe they have other sweets but I can't remember now. Its one of my favorite stores. -

I love these guys. I really really do. Owned by Lauren "Lolo" Reskin and Jason Jimenez who take serious pride in their mission to bring Miami musical goodness.
Read the reviews below. They're all glowing for a reason. They have a blog and website (http://sweatrecordsmia...) that will keep you in the know about what's worthwhile to check out.
This is not a South Beach "ooontz-ooontz" kind of animal...this is the sort of group that brings cool bands down and hosts cute vegan/vegetarian brunches and serve fair-trade coffee. Never mind all the cute things Lolo has near the register...Kid Robot and Friends With You lovers should go here.
Two thumbs up and 3 snaps around the world. -

In short, Sweat Records is a must.
Sweat is a hub of fun and information for all those interested in experiencing Miami's (and southern Florida's) live entertainment. They offer vinyl, cds, movies, community, and live entertainment. Sweat's mailing list is essential for knowing what is what. If you are not on Sweat's mailing list, do so immediately--you will be happier (and more informed) when you do. Check out their website at http://sweatrecordsmia... for the happenings (and to sign up for the mailing list).
Sweat Records promotes local and independent artists. Sweat Records fosters community. Sweat Records offers music, information, comedy, and a tasty cafe to boot. Sweat Records is a must.
Oh and p.s., if you are vegetarian ask Lolo (one of the owners and can probably be recognized by her brightly dyed hair) where to go in Miami. -

Miami-Dade, FL
Sweat is one of my favorite spots in Miami. Ideally, in a large urban environment like Miami, there would be a lot of places like Sweat, but there simply aren't. In the past two years, I've gone to the vegan brunch twice--excellent and inexpensive. I won tickets to see the people from Once perform. I've also attended like ten live music performances, and the cover ranged from $0 to $5. The employees and the regulars are always very cool. It reminds me a lot of Empire Records, except without the Gin Blossoms, and lots of young dweebs going through an identity crisis.
Incidentally, I have it on good authority that this record store has a great music selection. -

Hollywood, FL
First and foremost, the staff is great. I'll be more specific: Matt is a cool guy. I took a liking to Propaghandi and the second time I stepped inside, Matt remembered that. We even chatted about some noise projects and I ended seeing him at a show next door at Churchill's that same night.
The vegan cupcakes are delicious. I like to have one every time I go.
The reason I give Sweat 4 stars instead of 5 is because of their selection. If you're into indie, then this does not apply. Sweat is indie heaven - Sweat excels at providing an indie selection of music. I would like to see more variation, specifically black metal, noise, and local stuff (e.g. punk and hardcore punk - stuff from Pendejo Productions and Destroyio). -

Manhattan, NY
This record store is the ultimate indie music store. You can either go to find that obscure CD you've been hunting for everywhere else or just browse around and find amazing music in any and every genre.
They also have books, magazines, toys, vinyls and all kinds of crazy stuff. The staff is super friendly (even to someone like me who knows nothing about music) and will help you find whatever you need.
The place also has a really cool environment as its next door to Churchill's, but that my friends, is a whole other review. -

I went here a while back and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Me and my boyfriend spent a long time perusing through all the records and enjoying a cup of cappuccino.
The records were cheap and in good condition, we couldn't just buy one. If you want you can even test them out.
The music that they play is not your normal Y100, so sit on the couch and enjoy the music while watching the fish in the fish tank or read a book.
The owner was really nice and asked me if I liked the coffee. I told her of course and she told me she learned to make them by watching a video. This was awesome cause they tasted very good and they were presented nicely.
I will definitely be back, but in the winter were I can enjoy my hot cup of coffee. -

So, I decided to change my Sweat Records yelp review because I feel I may have been too harsh on this little record store. Might I add, it's one of the few Miami has running.
I really only visited Sweat a few times before writing that review, and they were mostly for small in-store events.
The store's made a lot of improvements since then, though-- mainly the James L. Knight grant they received that potentially made a huge cultivation for the better. They have A/C now, which is AWESOME. And they're using their grant money to raise culture and arts in the Miami local scene. A huge factor in that was the 1st Annual (hopefully more) Sweatstock event which brought everyone together to listen to local live music as well as L.A. natives No Age. Good vibes from everyone.
The importance of the independent record store in a community is pretty visible, at least in our locale. I was judging it more as a store in that last review, than as a potential landmark with the abilitiy to improve Miami's scene. It already has.
As for the price of records, well people gotta make money. And there are certain things people have to sacrifice to make a business work. So, a store like this has to rely more on the community and its devotion than on sales.
The store has a pretty okay selection. I'm sure as the years go on, they'll expand their stock. It's a progression, though, so I think it takes time. But they're more than happy to do special orders and you'll be surprised what you can get. I ordered a bunch of Zomby and dubstep records, which I'd probably have to dig through ebay to find. Thanks to Lolo, I only had to send and email and drive 30 mins to get it.
Also, the potential implementation of an online store will improve the store ten-fold and most likely keep the store running at bay for years.
The coffee is pretty okay. -

This store is dedicated to the soul of music, They host great events and one of a kind shows that you might not necessarily have access to in bigger cities.
There is no other music store in Miami that can compare and have the selection they do.
But then again, they are the only music store that's worth visiting. -

Places like this are, unfortunately, few and far between down here. A friend told me about this place and insisted I check it out. I'm glad I did - have been back 3 times since.
You can get anything online these days, but nothing compares to actually going to a great place like this, finding unique things, being able to see and touch things before you buy it, and meeting great people into the same things you are into.
These thumbs are way up! -

Miami Beach, FL
Excellent little record store, right next door to Churchill's, in the Little Haiti area of Miami. Great selection, reasonable prices and friendly staff make this place so terrific. One thing to keep in mind however, is that their opening time of noon appears to be more of a suggestion than a fixed "rule." Many times, I've been there at noon, and even shortly thereafter, only to find the storm shutters shut tight with no sign of life (to the point where I've actually walked inside Churchill's and asked if they knew whether Sweat had closed down). That aside, this is truly an awesome place.

Sweat will always be one of the first places i bring my friends visiting from out of town. With the best cupcakes i've ever had (vegan to boot), a nice coffee/tea selection, and some great artwork/posters adorning the walls, Sweat pretty much oozes cool.
They have a nice selection of CD's but honestly, i hardly look. If your into contemporary indie LPs then you'll have lots to choose from here. Their other genre selections aren't as plentiful but usually have a few gems to offer. There are also some rad books/journals/toys etc.
Hope that Matt P. is working that day because he's especially helpful and insightful. If you're looking for a taste of the local music: He's your go to guy, and sweat is generous in local fare.
Lolo and Jason are the lifeline of most of the great events, and i'd recommend any in store event.
Sweat isn't a 5 just yet, but is well on its way and one of Miami's cultural gems. Do visit soon -

the best place to get music in miami. hard to find stuff, vinyls, etc.
they're currently closed because they're busy moving into their 3rd location (i believe). sweat was located for awhile in the back of churchill's and i think they're moving somewhere still pretty close by on 2nd.
when they're up and running, sweat is an absolute must! in addition to having amazing music, they support local artists which is always a great thing.
UPDATE: they're up and running...woohoo!!!! from their site, "The new 1,200 sq ft storefront + organic coffee bar is on NE 2nd Ave. next-door to Churchill's. We've got a Sweat-colored aqua and purple striped awning so you can find us. We're open 12pm to 12am every day - come visit!!" and there's a organic coffee bar too now!!! -

this place lives up to its name!
this is a great little record shop. you can find some cool vinyl here at bargain prices. the dollar bin keeps me coming back but i wish people wouldn't mix up the non dollar stuff in the dollar bin. you can find old hip hop, jazz, freestyle, punk, and the obscure in those dollar bins.
right now unfortunately their a/c is broken so the name couldn't be more fitting. its a bit warm in the shop! if you cant handle the heat it might be a good idea to give them a call and find out what the status is on the a/c before heading out. -

sweat records is the crystallization of an idea. when i lived in miami in the late 90s, there was a gaping void in the city; it was a few years before this little place came along and filled it.
lolo has done miami a great service by making sweat a fabulously inviting and culturally necessary place. a must for the fan of the scene.
also i bought the first ever gift certificate from sweat, so i am proud to say i was there in the beginning =) -

Miami Beach, FL
If you come from a town with any type of indie, metal, hardcore, or punk music scene you'll be sourly disappointed at this miami "institution." If your from miami, apparently this place is the sweetest spot in the city. I've lived here a few months and as far as record stores go I think this is the best your gonna find in the area. Small selection, friendly staff, a handful of hipster kitsch, and the cashier doubles as a barista if you want some coffee with your new albums. Despite being reminded of the sorry state of the local music scene whenever I visit, its nice to find a little oasis of independence in this town. Plus the best venue in town, churchhll's, is located right next door.

the ONLY record/books/independent store worth going to in MIAMI. not overpriced. not snobby at all. its like next door to babylon (not rasta) CHURCHILLS.
