All I gotta say is, been there once for a friend and it took 5 long hours. Been there once myself and took 3 long hours. (This is regarding the ER).

They are very slow, and I understand that they don't call you in order of coming in but in order of how urgent your cause needs attention, however, everytime I get to the back I see half of these people chit chat and whatnot.

And you still have to pay $100 co-pay even if all they tell you is "I can't deal with that, you have to go to this and this doctor"

I was admitted New Years Day 2003 with 104 - 105 degree fevers, violent vomiting, severe dehydration, literally blinding headaches, full body aches, chills, and back pain so bad I couldn't stand up. I was raced through the Emergency Room where my doctor barely glanced at me but joked about me having spinal meningitis and then sent me home with low dosage antibiotics for a "mild kidney infection".

Less  than 24 hours later my roommate found me in my room screaming in pain covered with a full body rash that was the product of my organs starting to shut down and my body trying to get rid of toxins. I was re-admitted where I was immediately diagnosed with one of the worst cases of spinal meningitis in history that didn't result in severe brain damage or death.

So thanks Sutter Davis, there is nothing like losing your ability to think of the right word at the right time, having memory issues, your left hand not working as good as it used to, and getting to hear a nurse tell your mother over the phone that "I think you need to be prepared to deal with the body when you get here".  This all could have been avoided had your doctors been competent and admitted me the first time I came in.

December 2000:
Our condom breaks.  It's the Friday afternoon before the new year, and no doctor's office will be open again until Tuesday.  No Planned Parenthood either.  So we do the only thing we can think of and go to the emergency room, where we have the following fun exchanges:

-with the triage nurse
"So you were having unprotected sex?"
"We were using a condom, and it broke.  We're here for EC."
"Right.  Unprotected sex."
"Whatever - I need EC."
"Look, the indications for EC are unprotected sex.  Did you or didn't you have unprotected sex?"
sigh - "Well, our condom broke, so I guess we weren't protected once that happened."

-with the attending nurse, a snarky young goateed white male
"So you were having unprotected sex?"
"We were using a condom, and it broke.  We're here for EC."
"And that's your only method?!"  Inclines his head so that his pupils roll up.  "Your chart says you're not on the pill.  Why not?"
"We're a long-distance couple, and we only have sex about 8 times a year when we visit each other."
"Well" - makes a hacking, contemptuous valley-girl gasp - "take my advice and go on the pill.  That way you don't have to worry about any more" - eye roll - "'unplanned visits.'"

-with unsmiling attending doctor:
"So: you had unprotected sex?"
"No: our condom broke."
"Here.  You ever taken these before?"
"No."
"Take the first two now.  Take the next two in 12 hours.  You may feel some nausea.  Any questions?"
"No."
"Okay.  Please see the health insurance counselor."  Nod.
I actually can't remember if he said good night to us.

On the plus side, we were in and out of the ER in about 40 minutes.  And the health insurance counselor was very sweet to us.  I wish I could remember her name.

Summer 2004:
Oh my god, this headache is killing me.  This is the worst pain I've ever had in my life.  Back to the ER...

Grumpy attending doctor from 2000?  But look at that smile!  WTF?
"Hi!  How are you today?
"Headache, huh?  You have headaches often?
"Poor thing, you look miserable!
"Take any aspirin this morning?
"Oh, no, I can assure you it's not an aneurysm!  Don't worry, it's just a really bad headache.  If it gets worse, don't forget to follow up!  Bye now!"

Seems patently unfair that he could treat two cases so differently.  I wrote a letter to Sutter about this very problem, and never heard a damn thing back from them.
