Susie's is a drive-in, best visited by car.
I lack a car. I have only come once by car.

I have come to Susie's three other times, by train and foot.
It is a massive pain to do so. Sometimes it can take up to an hour for me to do it. It can take quite a long time for preparation, especially since the walk-up seems to take longer than the drive-up line.
I've happily done it.

That could start as a sign of how much I adore this place.

For such a dive, the menu is phenomenally expansive - it has everything. That said, I don't think that I would trust a taco or sloppy joe from Susie's, but at least they offer it. I've had the burger three times, very reasonable. The other time, the chicken sandwich, which was disappointing - a small piece of meat, especially since I was starving.
The milkshakes are a bit runny, and somewhat taste alike. The strawberry one was the best I had... the blueberry did not have much flavor to it, nor did the pineapple one.
Their french fries, on the other hand, are stellar. Enough so that I'd go to Susie's for the fries, alone, and nothing else.

I wouldn't ever want to take a closer look at the kitchen.
Or the food preparation, beyond seeing it from afar.
Or at the self-reverential reviews plastered all over the counter, especially the one in which they cross out *whiz*, as in *cheeze-whiz,* as a staple ingredient (undoubtedly so).
And sure, I wish they took credit cards.
But, I'll be damned if it's not my late-night dive go-to, even though it's an hour away by public transportation at 3am.

Susie's serves up some of the best American fast-food money can buy.

WARNING:  If you cringe at the thought of your arteries clogging, dislike the idea of your brown bag of food becoming transparent, and never come back to a joint that has less than 5-star service, don't bother coming here and don't read any further.

That being said, I love Susie's and have been going there for years.
-Their fries are the best in the Universe. There. I said it. You can order them by the pound. Seriously.
-They have 50+ delicious milkshakes.  Make it your mission in life to try them all.  I enjoy the Banana Split shake, the Honey Almond, and the Grasshopper.
-My favorite sandwich is the CONFUSED CHICKEN...extra mayo, extra cheese.  Don't ask what's in it.  Just eat it and thank me later.

You can get philly cheese steaks, hot dogs, polish, pizza puffs, fries in an EDIBLE bowl, burgers....24/7 baby!!!

Normal milkshake flavors not enough for you? Try the bazillion options at Susie's! Peanut butter is delicious, honey almond is good if you like marzipan (but VERY strong, so only serious marzipan addicts), cinnamon was pretty good but not all the cinnamon mixed in very well.

The fries are deliciously greasy and wonderful, but whatever you do, don't put the bag on your lap without a bunch of napkins in between unless you want a permanent grease stain on your pants.

I tried this place because it is a block from my house and have always noticed it before I moved into the neighborhood. I tried it once, and then tried it again....not impressed. I couldn't even eat the burger I ordered because the meat seemed to be plastic. The fries could have been the only good thing, but they were so soggy. All the food was soggy and the service stunk also. The place looks so dirty and the food is not worth it.

I've been going to this place for thirty years and rarely had a problem till tonight. For years I have been coming here always ordering the same thing super tacos and a vanilla shake. Always enjoying my food till today. The owner only cares about one person and that's herself. Sad to say cause this used to be a good place to go. As usual I ordered the same thing but the owner was acting a little cockier than usual, i dint know what her problem was but I ordered about fifteen dollars worth of food and I was treated like garbage got my order and she couldn't even reach out the window to give it to me she made me overreach through my car . then she handed me my vanilla shake that was dripping all over the place, I then started to try and get her attention by honking my horn she refused to answer. finally I got out of my car to try and get her attention when she came to the window I said Ive been honking the horn and waiting for someone to answer she said well whats the problem. I said this drink is dripping all over the place. She cockily told me well put the lid on it wasn't dripping when I handed it to you. I said you know Ive been coming here for thirty years and she said yeah I vie been here for thirty five. And I said yeah its still the same problem and she said if you don't like it go somewhere else.
Well I think its time for Suzie's Beef to come down off there high horse a few notches cause with the people I know which are a lot of her clientele, I'm sure she doesn't want to lose a good majority of her business. What she said was very ghetto and very unprofessional in the future I would appreciate she remember where she started and who her customers were because she needs to brush en up on her people skills, I think shes too use to her surroundings.

Chicken Cheese Fry bowl, how I love thee. I first ate Susie's Drive-In when I was about 17, almost ten years later and I still dream about Grasshopper milkshakes. This shack, half sunken into a torn up parking lot has satisfied many late night, possibly alcohol induced cravings. I would never want to set foot inside for fear that I may witness what is really going on in that kitchen, information I'd prefer to remain unknown to me. The miserable customer service always puts a smile on my face as I wait way too long for my food. It is all part of the charm, if I was looking for a fine dining experience I would not be searching for it at a fast food drive in. Susie's, I salute you!

This place loses 2 stars right off the bat for their miserable customer service.  This should also give you a clue how good their food is.

Every time I enter this place, usually for a perfectly sized soft-serve cone, or one of their monster milkshakes - offered in seemingly endless flavors (apple pie?!) - for the first 10 minutes that I am standing at the counter I am served nothing but a dirty look by whoever is on the other side, sometimes by three different people at once.

I understand you are filling another order, but a smile and, "how are you" or "be right with you" goes a long way.  But generally, the drive through girl is the one who seems to have a few minutes on her hand when I walk in yet she won't lift a finger to take care of me.

However, if you can get though all that without walking back out the door and actually place an order, you won't regret it.  The menu is as limitless as your imagination and the human body's ability to withstand years of cholesterol-laden assaults.

Other than the ice cream treats, Suzie's is famous for it's cheese fries, pictured - served with Italian beef, gyros meat, or chili, if you want - and it's burgers served between slabs of Texas toast.

Just go late night, with other people, and you will be less inclined to be affected by the attitude of the help.

I'm torn, I love variety and I love greasy food, but I hate a bad eating experience, and that's exactly what Susie's was.  whoever said this is "good for groups" is a liar.  The staff was pissed at our very existence.  But the shakes, pizza dogs, cheese fries and just about any fat food you can imagine is delicious.  It would probably be better in the spring, when we didn't have to pile inside.

Serious contender for best chocolate malt in Chicago.  No pretension and a lower price than the other #1 contender (Eleven City) may put Susie's ahead.  FYI:  They use malt syrup here, not malt powder.  Pretty much the perfect milkshake, and a bargain at 20 ounces (apparently the "small") for $3.67.  I don't need a 20-ounce milkshake, but when it's this delicious, why not?  I'm certainly not going to drive all the way out here that often.

Oh, and the food is good too.  Everything comes in a big portion here.  Onion rings are one of the best fast-food style versions that I've had.  Fries are good too (with skins, natch), but I don't need them with all the fancy toppings, just ketchup or barbecue sauce.  Both of those items seem very heavy with grease.  I know that we are talking about fried foods, but come on.  There's fried and then there's saturated.

Get the corn pole--a polish sausage corn dog.  Very tasty, priced stunningly low at $1.85, and listed on the menu as an "appetizer."  Yeah, only in Chicago is a polish fucking corndog an appetizer.  Jesus Christ.

I have been craving Italian beef for almost a week, so today I had one here with mushrooms.  Again, very good, although the beef itself was slightly dry, the mushrooms were excellent and bountiful.  Also, the toasted sesame bun successfully added another flavor and texture to the mix.  Nice touch.  Overall great sandwich.

The drive-though wait is long, the cashiers are bitchy, the location is not convenient, but the food fulfills your late night craving.  I've always stuck to their chicken pita sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza pockets, and fries (love their fries).

Let's face it - there are only a couple of places that drunkards flock to at 3am - Susie's, Maxwell St Polishes, Chinatown and Rock and Roll Mcdonalds (which is really only for people who don't know any better). Out all of these choices, Susie's takes it hands down.

If you are a fan of fries, you can die in peace here. They make just about any type of fries in a crusty bread bowl - philly cheese fries, chili cheese fries, gyros cheese fries, etc. It's kinda like the Forrest Gump of french fries. The large portion is ridiculously big. I would recommend ordering the regular if you don't want leftovers in the morning.

If fries are not your forte, they have just about anything you can imagine at your disposal (philly cheese steak, gyros, bacon cheeseburgers, polishes, shakes, virgin nymphs, etc.)

I wouldn't say it's necessarily fast food - sometimes the wait can be hit or miss. Also, if you're lucky enough to be there when Susie is around, pray that you get to experience her 'God has forsaken me' attitude. She either hates all that is life or secretly loves all who pass through. Regardless, it's all part of the experience.

5 Stars - Chicago classic!

OMG!

This place has been in my backyard and I never knew about it! That's probably a good thing.

One fully loaded double bacon cheeseburger, fries and a milkshake at 3:00 in the morning. Wait 30 minutes to get your food.........

Nothing screams Chicago more than this. At the time it tasted great, best ever. Fast forward to this morning and you might feel a little different. and not in a good way. I'm just sayin!

Not so big on the food, I'll be honest, although it's pretty damn good if you're into super fatty. What am I big into though? The gee-dee milkshakes. I was referred to this place by a friend who told me they had the best milkshakes in Chicago and was he ever right. When I first found this place I went there every day -- surprised I didn't gain fifty pounds!

This place is especially good if you dig Green River. If so, always get the Green River shake. Mmmmmm.

Please answer the following:

Do you -
A.  Enjoy a wide variety of selections for greasy food at any hour of the day?

B.  Have a craving for a decent shake even though it's now's past the time anyone should be drinking a shake?

If you've answered yes to either of these questions, Susie's is likely where you need to be.

Keeping it simple, here's the highlights:

Open 24 hours and always ready to fulfill your grease/shake needs.
60+ shake flavors that range in price base on ingredients used in the shake.
Famous for a variety of their foods, but perhaps the most grease clogging delicious meal is the fries in an edible basket... think a large salad taco shell that has been fried, topped with french fries, and then drizzled with cheese sauce.  And finally, if you want to add some protein to your heart attack, you can add a variety of meat choices (gyro, chicken, bacon) to the top.  It's guiltily delicious and not at all nutritious... but probably what you're craving right now.

Fairly affordable, mediocre quality food 24 hours a day?  All I can say is A-OK.

Verdict:  Given there isn't much dining options at 1 AM for repsectable shakes, I've been back here plenty.

According to my favorite badass in Dawn of the Dead, "when there's no more room in hell the dead will walk the earth..."

And if those zombies ran out of human meat, they'll be headed to Suzies for the most smothered edible cheesefry bowls and milkshakes. Until yesterday the only shake I had was oreo coconut (amazing).

Then last night I sipped on a Pina Colata shake which is intense but light compared to the shake I got which was German Chocolate. Not at all did the shakes melt quickly which gets them extra cookie points.

Last note : Cornpole! We tried it based on yelp recommendations and wow. Instead of baby phillys I insist on getting these from now on. Hot fresh and perfectly golden state fair quality corn on the outside of a hot juicy sausage mmmmmmmm.

.......

Brb, going to Susies...

Awesome fries. Other than that if you are looking for a main, just be creative. They can pretty much make anything your grease spoon loving mind can conjure up. While I do believe that this place makes for a much better late night, imbibed run, when one is sober it still offers some comfort food that cannot be beat.
Footlong specialty sandwiches are excellent and one of the unique offerings of Susies. Try a Confused Chicken or a Bull. Stay away from the conventional grease spoon orders like gyros as they are not very good. Finish your meal with a shake and then pass out. Then do it all over again... until your massive heart attack.

but at 4:45am it is worth a shot...expect a line and a sign that says turn down your radio.

Hungry? Late? And you don't freak out if you get an occasional hair in your fries? (Yes, this has happened more than once) Susie's is your place.

I used to live within a stone's throw from this place, and the food is consistent and reliable. It's fast food, it's good and served up with a smile. Even though I don't live close anymore, I do drive up and get my usual.

Shake are great, and the paprika seasoned fries are tasty, yes they're that good that I can over look the possibility of getting a little extra protein.

So does this make me a bit weird, or does it make this place that good. People who know me will say it's the latter.

Take note, if you use the drive thru, there's one on the east and one on the west side of the place, but don't drive in and place your order at one window then go to the next McDonald's style. No not here.

Susie's drive thru rules:

Order here
Pay here
Pickup here
Stay here

I swear I've had dreams about this place!

2 things I swear by are their Philly Cheese Fry Bowl and their Chicken Philly. Both are the best concoctions of greasy fast-food! Come here anytime and you'll be sure to be satisfied!

Their cheese fry bowl reminds me of the bird's nest dish you order at a Chinese restaurant. It's edible and starts off with a layer of fries, Philly cheeesteak meat, cheese sauce, and two forks jabbed in the center and voile you have a meal for 3. I cold do without the Gyro Fry Bowl as the meat is not fresh off the rack (frozen).

I do not suggest eating the Chicken Philly in your car with your windows closed. I got nauseated once driving home from the lovely aroma!

Haha...

I just went to Susie's again yesterday on my way to O'Hare Airport. I had a bbq chicken sandwich, fries, and a green river (no ice for me). It was all delicious! The bbq chicken was shredded in a nicely hot and spicy sauce and a toasted french roll. Man was it good! The fries and GR were their usual excellent.
Susie's is still an outstanding place to get your fast food fix on!

As far as AWESOME street eats that hit the spot - this place gets 5 stars. I wish I could give it 5 1/2. I got a Reuben sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, thousand island, and melty Swiss and it was all on a buttered rye bread toasted to perfection. I love how the ladies that work here aren't even that nice but yet the food is awesome. It adds to the local favorite vibe here. The choices here range from awesome sandwiches, delicious cheese fries, yummy shakes, and good appetizers like fried tamales, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, etc. I got the fried mushrooms and they were simply delectable, especially dipped in a ranch/hot sauce combo. The Large sack of fries fed me and my buddy and were great dipped in their liquid cheese sauce. Overall if you are anywhere in the NW side of Chicago, hit this place up. Even if you're downtown or near O'Hare - you're only a bearable train ride away via the Blue line! I HIGHLY recommend this place for people who like cozy, hometown favorite fast food - and want a ton of selection for moderate prices!!! Best of all you can find some of the city's best variations of the foot long Polish!!!

I wanted to love this place so much. I have been looking for a place with to-die-for shakes since moving to this town. Boy, did I find them. I had the mysteriously titled Oreo River, some mind blowing Oreo shake with what I think was some sort of fruit-ish flavor. Friend hand a Marshmallow shake with hot fudge. I didn't know you can make marshmallows into milkshakes, but thank god that you can.

Unfortunately, I also found a plethora of other eats which were blissful at the time, but so greasy that i was throwing up by the time I got home. I should've known when my sandwich rendered the wrapper transparent as soon as I opened it. So, I'd take the milkshakes again, but as delicious as those fries smothered in cheese were, the food's just not worth it.

Everything deep fried and everything delicious.  Their shakes are awesome too, so don't skimp on that.  My personal favorite is the Mint Oreo with Banana. Yummmm.

If you are watching your figure or have a problem with buying food that greases up the entire paper bag that it sits in, skip Susie's and move onto Subways.  However, if you are looking for the best greasy food in Chicago, give Susie's a try!  They have the best fries in Chicago, in my opinion.  You can get the fries in a giant deep fried tortilla shell and load it with anything you want - chilli, cheese, gyro meat, you name it.  They also have the corn pole which is a corn dog injected with processed cheese. Yummmm..  We also love their pizza puff and their italian beef is quite good.

The only "no" for us at this place is the tacos and the gyros.  The pita bread that the gyros come in is kind of hard and just not the right fit for a gyro.

I would like to apologize to Susie for forgetting to yelp about this place. For being such a loyal customer I don't know how this place slipped my mind. I am sorry. Please forgive me.

You pull up to this shack/hole in the wall and wonder how such delicious foods come from this shack. Well it does, and its magical. The have a plethora of milkshake varieties which is good for the people who would like to try something new. The Oreo shake is my favorite and the baboon shake is a local favorite as well. We get the Philly foot long and split it. It is HUGE and more than enough food to go around. The food tastes amazing. As I write this... I am salivating on my work desk.

Rockstar suggestions to try:
Corn pole
Cheese fries in that edible bowl thing
Philly
confused chicken
Philly cheese steak Fries in that edible bowl
Pizza Puffs
ALL SHAKES

The customer service isn't their strong suit, but heir deliciousness on their fare makes up for their lack of friendly service. Word to the wise: DON'T PISS OFF SUSIE AND ACT RIGHT AND KNOW YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU PULL-UP/WALK UP TOP THE WINDOW. Sorry about the capital letters, but that's how you gotta put emphasis on things. If you don't do what I told you to do....you will not have a good Susie's experience and your food will not be good. So come correct and act right, even if you are still a little tipsy. This late night joint is super cheap, super tasty, and open 24 hours.

I like the location and how they put out little tables out there if you are too ravenous to wait till you get home or you want to chill with your homies a little while longer.

If you're looking for a place to grab a great milkshake and satisfy a "fry" craving then Susie's is the place.

I don't know when this place closes but whenever I am feeling the "drunken munchies" I go and hit it up.

Although the staff is pretty mean, and the service may lack....
they have cheese steak fries in an edible bowl.  Enough said.

P.S. my favorite milkshake is the banana split... it is literally a banana split in liquid form.  Yummy

The city of Chicago is officially at war with the state of Alabama my friends, and it ain't (just) no red or blue thing.  It's a holy fat crusade and Chicago just plowed ahead of even old lardy Dixie.

And my ass is the conflict's first official casualty.  My arteries are next unless I can stop the push of grease shacks from the North.

Alas...

You can get a hot dog with pretty much a pizza on top of it here.  Or you can get a hamburger with a hot dog on top of it.  Seriously, just whatever goes here.  You can get any, ANY sandwich served on top of fresh cut, freshly fried french fries.  ANY. Philly Cheese steak + fries = Philly Cheesesteak fries.  Hot dog + fries = hot dog fries.  Pizza dog + fries = pizza dog fries.  Do you understand what I'm saying here?  And they've got like two walls full of fucking sandwiches, so the fry possibilities are almost endless. This is where those Saturday Night Live "Ditka" guys come to have recreational heart attacks.

And they serve all of those fries, those fries with all of the gunk on them already?  In a deep fried tortilla shell bowl.  Like the kind you get a big ass taco salad in.  Like that.  They take that and they put a bunch of fries in it and then top it with cheese and then top it with a goddamed sandwich minus the bread.  Shit, they'll probably add the bread too.

I got Confused Fries with their Confused Chicken sandwich on top - grilled chicken, mushrooms, peppers, sour cream and, I think, (holy hell) cream cheese in there too.  I pulled it out of the plastic bag and there wasn't any extra packaging really, just this monster fried tortilla shell - the fucking packaging is deep fried and edible!!! I'm recoiling in awe and in horror even as a I write this now!

It was fantastic! And disgusting! And delicious! And totally gross! And my man almost attacked me for it and I was pretty much afraid I was going to lose some fingers.

One note about the "corn pole" I'd heard so much about.  So I pretty much understood this to be like a corn dog with no meat, like a big ol stick of fried corn meal, which would be exciting enough.  Then I took a bite...meat?...really tasty and greasy meat?....I went back to the counter to ask the woman what the hell I was eating.  It's not a corn "pole", it's a corn "pol"....It's a corn dog (and excellent and hard fried corn dog) made with a POLISH SAUSAGE.  And you can get it all 24 hours a day.

Even when driving away we started talking about what we are going to get "next time."  I don't feel so bad though, since a chick that WORKS there was in line herself in the cold at 1 in the morning, all "I know I really shouldn't be here again, but...."  OH SHIT!!  This crap ain't hype - it's crap still, no doubt, but it's really good crap.

Alabama? You need to step up your fucking game if you want to still have the fattest people in the nation, because just this one chunky city is whooping your whole state's big ass up and down the sparetireish midsection of this fat, nasty country.  Fried green tomatoes are the shit, but until you start serving that up in a deep fried tortilla basket, you need to just waddle your ass back to the trenches of shame (but of way more health).

Note to self:  Do immediate Yelp search for "detox" and "ashrams"....

What the F is going on up in this joint??? Grease and lard galore.... HEAVEN.

Yeah.. HEAVEN.

My health nut of a mommy would shake her head in disapproval. Evil side eye included. SCREW romantic, refined restaurants with elegant, fine cuisine. I'm suggesting this place when asked where do I wish to go on a date. That way he can see the real me early on... ya know, gorging on greasy ass cheese fries. My favorite so far: Phily cheese fries and a corn pole washed down with a vanilla milkshake. That sounded a little unintentionally naughty. haha.. ANYWAY, my goal is to try all their cheese fries and milkshakes. Beautiful, smooooooth, creamy, cellulite provoking, fat ass inducing milkshakes. That's all I got for you.

p.s. about the service, I've received nothing but the nicest service here, whether it be day or night that I stop by and I've been here a couple times now... so I've yet to receive any rudeness that's mentioned by others on here.

There's not much I can say about Susie's that hasn't already been said.  But that won't stop me.

I love Susie's.  My waistline does not.  Their milkshakes (over 50 flavors!) are hand made to order.  Their fries are great, whether you get them on their own, or in the fried bowl with "chez" and other toppings (if you get the bacon, you get actual strips of bacon - FULL strips!).  I like their Italian beef, and their burgers are tasty too.  I can't comment on their sausage offerings, but others have raved.

Some quirks about Susie's:
- You can get a fudge sundae.  Not hot fudge.  Fudge.
- This is not fast food.  At times, it feels like they are taking care of one customer at a time, start to finish.
- They have a sandwich called 'confused chicken.'  I have no idea what that is, but it's a great name.
- Their menu is so extensive that it could be considered overwhelming.  I feel like they add items every time I go.
- The service isn't the friendliest, but I think a friendly staff just wouldn't be quite right here.

It's not gourmet food, but it's a damn good greasy treat.

Four stars for 2 words. Greasy fries.
Just cause there's grease soaking thru the double paper bad, doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
This place is a tiny shack, and I'm never sure which drive thru window is open. The seasoning on the fresh cut fries is yum! I've heard some horror stories about the hygiene of this place thru the grapevine, but whatever. Shit. what you can't see won't hurt you. And if it does, I have health insurance for a trip to the ER ; ) lol. I have never had anything but the fries, and prob never will have anything other then the fries. I hear the milkshakes are great, and the yelpers here seem to agree. Go for the fries!

Warning: Food Snobs, Enter at your own Risk!

I'm not gonna lie, some of the items at Susie's are questionable.  Some are downright scary.  But nostalgia gives this place that extra star.  I grew up nearby and remember getting hot dogs and shakes here.  Nothing spectacular really, but this is a neighborhood joint that became popular with the locals.

A friend of ours recently brought us a gift of Susie's cheese fries and Italian beef sandwiches.  The fresh cut, skin-on fries had the signature cheez sauce we all know and love (or hate).  It's been years since I've had the fake cheese sauce, and it was a strange and delicious reunion.  Say what you will about the sauce, you can't deny that the fries are excellent.  Fresh cut fries are always a good thing.

The Italian beef sandwiches were also pretty good.  I've definitely had better sandwiches elsewhere, but when you're hungry... Susie's beefs hit the spot.  My only issue was with the giardiniera.  Who the heck puts beans and corn in their giardiniera?!  I picked out the beans, since they do NOT belong on a proper Italian beef sandwich.  Seriously.

I akin this place to a White Castle.  It's great when you've been out late (doing who knows what), and need to satisfy your craving for greasy fast food.  And it's open 24 hours.  Any questions?

I tried this place out a few times when I lived just four blocks away. The fries were always too salty and waayyyyyy too greasy. Now don't get me wrong,  I like my grease. But their fries are unnecessarily greasy. It wouldn't hurt you to let 'em drain for a minute or two, Susie. All of their beef sandwiches in general are very good.  But for what you pay, they seem to skimp on the meat a little bit a'la Subway. The milkshakes are pretty much addictive. Although it's a little alarming that the color of their blueberry shake is bright white. But don't look at it, just sip it. The customer service people are direct, but not offensive. No complaints there. If it's 2-3 in the mornin, nothin else is open, and only a greasy mushroom cheeseburger with fries will do, then this place is great. But I wouldn't make a special trip out to Susie's like say from Rogers Park.

A very solid peanut butter shake...with 50+ flavors to choose from, I was a bit overwhelmed. It wasn't super "peanut buttery" but it did the trick, with whipped cream to boot...

I will go back for a corn pole, and update accordingly.

Is this stretch of Montrose like fast food heaven, or what!?

The fabulous yelper John L. recommended this joint to me when I was craving some drive-in type food, and he was sure right. Hubby and I got a foot long polish (no jokes please) and some fries, and man, it was all I could have hoped for and more. Next time we're going back strictly for cheese fries and a milkshake....and I'm sure my ass will thank me later for the extra cushion.
