I love cupcakes. They're adorable and exude sweetness, both metaphorically and literally. They're the perfect "just thinking of you" gifts with just the right amount of generosity - not overwhelming, but simply kind. Yet since cupcakes have become so trendy in LA and everyone claims to have the best cupcake around, it's difficult to distinguish between the average Joes and the Brad Pitts. My verdict on SusieCakes? I'd like one Brad Pitt, two Ryan Goslings, and an Eric Bana to go please!
SusieCakes cupcakes taste more homemade to me than any other cupcake bakery around, including Sprinkles and Crumbs. The cake is light and airy, subtly sweet with the perfect amount of bounce, while the buttercream frosting never loses it's essential "butter-creaminess" no matter what flavor it's dressed up in. I don't feel like I've eaten an elephant gorged on candy after a cupcake, which is reason alone to choose SusieCakes over Sprinkles (though I like Sprinkles, the incredibly dense batter always makes me feel 10 lbs heavier afterwards).
SusieCakes' red velvet is one of the best I've ever had and at $3 a cupcake, I think I should stop by more often. -

If calories didn't exist, I would be first in line at Susie Cakes every morning when they opened. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of their buttercream frosting, I find it a little too sweet in mass quantities. I actually stopped eating a piece of their cake halfway through, which made my husband ask, "are you okay?" But the cake is amazing, the other frostings are crazy good, and as for the cookies... I'm getting a little dizzy just thinking about them.
My personal favorites are the frosted cut outs and the deliriously good whoopie pies. Yes, whoopie pies are filled with buttercream frosting, but in small doses, it's scrumptious. My husband is so in love with their molasses cookies, anytime I shop at the Whole Foods nearby, he begs me to stop at Susie Cakes. Also of note, their pies and puddings are pretty... Good Lord, I've run out of adjectives.
The greatest thing about Susie Cakes is the variety. This isn't just a cupcake place, it isn't just a cookie place, and it isn't a pie shop. It's all of them! -

I used to be a diehard Sprinkles fan... until I came to SusieCakes.
OMG, best red velvet cupcakes ever in my life. Perfectly moist, not too sweet, and the best cream cheese frosting EVER. I literally had nothing to complain about it. And even better, they sell mini versions of the red velvet, chocolate, and vanilla cupcakes, which are perfect for when you can't afford to splurge on 500 calories in 5 minutes and just want a bite of something deliciously and perfectly sweet to hit the spot.
My friend tried the gingerbread cupcake which came with miniature gingerbread men sprinkles on top. How cute is that? I don't really like gingerbread but it was fairly good, although my friend said it was tasty.
I think it's a testament to SusieCakes that when my friend and I were dining at Sugarfish and talking about whether or not we should go to SusieCakes after, several people dining next to us came over to tell us that we MUST go. And how they were right... They were so right. -

YUM YUM YUM.
Where do I startt...okay, the cupcakes.
I had the coconut flavored one...but problemo, I didn't get the red velvet! I had three other flavors, but I brought those over to my little cousins house and they basically had them. I'm a good cousin, I know.
Now...the cakes.
The coconut one...omgg....ridiculous. I can't have chocolate cause I'm kind of allergic, but I just had to have it. Plus, it didn't make me sick! Miracle chocolate type cake.
I also had the Vanilla Celebration cake, which was delicioussss. Mmm, I have some left in my fridge which makes me want to take it out and eat it.
AHH.
Oh yeah, the carrot cake. YUM.
Okay so basically all in all all their things are amazing, and you need to come to this place if you have a sweet tooth like me.
K bye, I'm going to get my vanilla celebration cake. & no, I am not a pig! -

Mmm SusieCakes. I went here with a friend a couple times and they have good cupcake portions with this thick frosting, and oftentimes cutsie decorations. The staff is usually pretty nice too but sometimes they say weird things, but I think it's all in good fun. I tried to study in here once but the tables are really small, and I got distracted by the free brownie samples and the big wall of cakes and ended up just eating sugar instead.

Some of the best cupcakes I've ever had.
I'm not into the frilly stuff, and SusieCakes does have frilly stuff, but they also have manly cupcakes haha. They have cupcakes that are just straight up cake and icing. No decorations, no hoopla, no problem!
What I like best is the little dimple on top of the cupcake that allows for extra icing. The icing is good. Not too sweet and quite velvety. As I write this, I'm starting to get uncomfortable. This IS a cupcake place right?
I feel someone tugging on my man-card... -

Hello My Name is Mark
and I am a non recovering Chocoholic and proud of it.
Their Triple Chocolate Cake was to die for. They no longer make it anymore so you have to substitute it with German Chocolate which is OK if you're addicted to Chocolate like me, cuz any chocolate fix will do. And redemption from this condition is next to impossible because the slices are absolutely huge, which exponentially adds to the temptation factor.
Whether its Triple Chocolate or German, it's all good stuff especially when it's chased down with a large glass of ice cold milk.
Once you step inside Susie Cakes, all your will power will fly out the door.
Beware Chocolate Lovers, relapse is imminent! -

A friend brought us a SusieCakes red velvet cake as a (sort of) joke for a small wedding reception. I don't consider myself a "cake person", but it was the best cake I have ever had. The groom and I ended up devouring it - amazing - I am now converted to RED VELVET LOVER, and I have SusieCakes to thank!

I used Susie Cakes to provide the cakes at my wedding. We went with a Strawberry/Vanilla Cake with Confetti, a Red Velvet, a Peanut Butter/Chocolate Cake and a Marble Cake. The cakes were delicious and the look of the cakes went well with our casual/vintage inspired backyard summer wedding. The best thing about Susie Cakes is there customer service. Yes, I like their baked goods, but my husband and I keep coming back because we believe in supporting nice people, and the peops at Susie Cakes are really nice.

Pricey cupcakes, but here's my quick and dirty break-down:
Mint chocolate: Meh- too reminiscent of toothpaste, and not enough chocolate taste.
Vanilla: Regrettably got two of these. Just average vanilla, no wow factor.
Mocha: Not enough coffee-ish flavor. Tasted too similar to chocolate.
Lemon: The filling inside made this potentially light, citrusy dessert too heavy.
Strawberry: Delicious! Did not have an artificial strawberry flavor and was light and satisfying.
Red Velvet: Bomb. Clearly, their expertise is in the cream cheese frosting
Pumpkin Spice: AMAZING. Loved the pumpkin spice with the cream cheese frosting.
Ordered a dozen mixed with all these guys. Close to $50 for cupcakes? I know it's Brentwood, but c'mon. I know I've had better cupcakes, and for far less.
On the plus side, the staff was super helpful. I just can't justify the price of the cupcake with its lackluster flavor. (With the exception of the aforementioned delicious cupcakes.) I was really expecting much more with all the glowing reviews. -

Moist cakes, perfect frosting, big pieces! This place has my favorite cake ever- their version of "funfetti ", but for adults! It's got layers of buttercream sandwiched between moist party cake.
I would love my birthday cake to be from there any day! (hint hint :) -

Susie Cakes Bakery is a hidden treasure in the Brentwood/Westwood area and a definite must go for anyone who has a sweet tooth.
The staff is always friendly and welcoming. The prices are reasonable when put up against higher end cupcake shops (i.e. Sprinkles and Frosted Cupcakery). Everything is baked fresh. Cookies are a tad pricey at about $2-3 a pop. I suggest going to Milk or Diddy Reese if cookies are what you are after.
When I'm here I usually get the red velvet (4/5) or carrot cake (4.5) slice over the cupcake due to the portion size being more generous for the cost.Listed in: Favorite places when I'm…

It's a tradition to get SusieCakes cupcakes for the office any time anyone is celebrating a birthday, so I've definitely had my share of their baked deliciousness. In my opinion, they make the best red velvet and mint chocolate in LA. I don't even enjoy sweets that much, but I can get excited over Susiecakes. They inject some of the frosting into the cupcakes so you get a deliciously balanced bite each time. I also love their seasonal flavors, especially the pineapple upside down cupcake.
I'm also a fan of their excellent customer service. Without fail, my questions and cupcake orders have always been met with a cheery and accommodating attitude from the workers behind the counter. Keep up the great work, SusieCakes!
Quick tip: There is parking in the back that bakery shares with Osteria Latini (also highly recommended) and Yogurtland. You can also park on the neighborhood streets. -

O-EM-GEEEEE!!!! This is it! This is the place that has caused my heart to stop and fall in love with Red Velvet. I was a funfetti loving chick FOR-EV-ER. But, now I am sold and am in love, loving Red Velvet.
This place is one of those places that could change your life, so be prepared. Especially if you don't live near a location.
I remember the first time I had a cupcake from Susie Cakes. It was brought to a birthday dinner of a good friend of mine in February 2008 (yeah, so good I remember the date). It was the most incredibly moist and flavorful piece of cake that has entered my mouth. From that day on, every piece of cake is compared to this - and I am struggling to find any that come close. Susie Cakes is a standard, that not many can slightly reach (still haven't found one that passes it up).
We live a good 30-45 minutes from a Susie Cakes location, but we will make the drive or purposely plan outings to accomodate a long-awaited Susie Cakes fix. Recently we took the plunge and tried other flavors and they did not disappoint. Each flavor is rich and packed with the proper flavor, the peanut butter, chocolate, mocha are all exactly what you would expect.
Don't waste your time or money on a cupcake - buy a whole CAKE! Susie Cakes cupcakes are incredibly moist - but their cake doesn't even compare it will literally melt in your mouth. We have taken a cake multiple times to the river (desert) and one time it actually lasted three days (as in, it wasn't devoured) on the third day it was still the most moist piece of cake I have ever had. -

Had to suck in my pride and award SusieCakes the extra star.
Their cakes (and cakes by the slice) are absolutely delicious. Cake cravings in the Westwood-Brentwood area are easily fulfilled by the massive slices of SusieCakes birthday cake, chocolate cake, and red velvet cake. One slice will last you forever, I promise you, you sweet toothed aficionados.
Their cupcakes, still, will never win me over, as I still find them dry and unpalatable. Their cakes however... are superb. I'm glad I was convinced to give them a try (my friends are always confused about why I dislike their cupcakes so much - they haven't ordered the cupcakes, themselves) and I am truly a happy camper.
Had a work event where a SusieCakes sheet cake, cookies, and assorted pastries were served and I was delighted nonetheless.
*Get a slice, not so much a cupcake.
*Frosting is thick, rich, and somewhat heavy, but it compliments the moist cake very well. Don't overindulge and finish a slice all at once though!
*Share. :) It'll taste so much better when you do.
This time's the charm, it seems.Listed in: Calories are a myth (in LA)

I wish I could give Susie Cakes 6 stars.
I was a HARDCORE Sprinkles fan but Susie Cakes is definitely competing for my title of #1 Most DELICIOUS, awesome, cutest cupcake of my LIFE. As Rachel Zoe would say... Susie Cakes is EVERYTHING.
What got my eyes to literally pop out of my sockets when I tried Susie Cakes for the first time was.... their cake. Their cake is SOOOOO SUPER MOIST and tastes as if it was baked in HEAVEN. How their cake is so SMOOTH, tasteful, moist and perfectly textured amazes me every single time. My favorite flavors are chocolate, red velvet and apple cinnamon (with salted caramel icing - i DIED - it's seasonal).
Their icing is also VERY well made and sweet but I'm not a huge fan of the extra icing filled inside the cupcake because I personally think it's too much. With any cupcake, I end up wiping away at least 50% of the icing and with Susie Cakes it's no different.
I ordered my birthday cake from them and the staff was extremely friendly and accommodating with what I requested for my cake, where I wanted the writing to be and etc.
I love the feel of the store - like a quaint, cute, old-fashioned, domestic-feminine shop! Their chocolate chip cookies are also super yummy. I look forward to trying their many seasonal flavors and more desserts!
The only sad thing is that they are not open on Sundays :( Boo. Plenty of Brentwood meter parking or free parking if you get a spot in the back! -
Review from D D.
The very best cupcakes I have tasted. Also many other delicious baked goods.
The vanilla cupcake is like a dream cupcake - everything you ever wanted. It is a cupcake like how a cupcake was meant to be. It tastes fluffy, light, sweet and fantastic. It tastes authentic and not over-processed. It is beautiful to look at and tastes even better. It is so amazing without even trying. That's what makes it even better - it is NOT overdone, preened and primped out, or filled with lardy chemicals to make it plasticized and fake (like SO MANY trying-to-be-cool-cupcakes are...).
The red velvet here is out of this world amazing and you must try it. Light, fluffy, the authentic taste of real red velvet - it has it all. You eat it and you are satisfied. Wow.
All the frosting here is the best frosting I have ever tasted. It is like home made frosting but better than any home made frosting anyone I know could ever make.
I will be dreaming of SusieCakes. Often. Mmmmm. I want to eat everything in this bakery. I don't even care about calories anymore when I eat these delights!

I can't even get descriptive. I've never actually been to Susie's, but they make the best carrot and red velvet cakes (my two favorites) around...sorry Porto's, I thought it was you. Prices are up there, but it's well worth it.
I swear, if there was a major disaster in the vicinity, I'd definitely loot this spot just for the carrot cake (please don't try this).
*** They also have a second location in Manhattan Beach, if Brentwood is too far. -

For my wedding this year, I ordered 4 delicious cakes from this fabulous bakery....I love that each cake was moist and rich. During the tasting, they brought the cutest display of cakes with 6 spoons of frosting. FREE TASTING!!!
Our choices were:
- Red Velvet
- Strawberry Confetti
- Coconut
- Carrot Cake
All 4 cakes were finished! 'Nuff said.... -

Thank god I moved back to LA. Now I can have SusieCakes' deliciousness whenever I want. No matter what, their red velvet cake is the best. Moist, heavy, delicious, if not a bit too bright red. But I can overlook that when my taste buds are so happy.

Susie Cakes has a way of bringing out the inner fat kid in you. Unless you're already fat, then they just make you really happy. Their gorgeous cakes are not only delicious, but they also take you back to your childhood, when life was simple and you didn't worry about that slice of cake going straight to your ass.
The layer cakes are always fresh, soft, moist, and perfectly sweet. They come different sizes/ flavors and you can even customize 'em to make your all sugary fantasies come true. I suggest chocolate on chocolate or my childhood favorite: vanilla funfetti cake (remember that?!) w/ creamy vanilla icing.
This cute bakery also whips up cupcakes, cookies and all kinds of classic treats. I don't love their cupcakes only because Susie Cakes fills the inside with frosting. Some people like getting a creamy explosion in their mouth, I personally do not. Their peanut butter or red velvet ($3/ea) are so good though, I just eat around the gooey center.
Their 7-layer bar ($3) is also yummy. It's stacked with choco and butterscotch chips, pecans, coconut and 3 other ingredients I don't remember. Just about everything that comes out of this nostalgic little shop looks pretty, tastes fantastical and will definitely make you feel like a kid again.Listed in: Sugar Coma

These are good. Sure. They're smaller than regular bakeshop cupcakes, which means I don't feel sick after eating half. Great. But really? These cupcakes are not intergalactic or made from the kisses of the Greek Gods or the smile of Natalie Wood in Miracle on 34th St..... 3 stars. That's my vote.

Tried Susie Cakes for my friend's birthday. I bought him a giant piece of carrot cake (moist, fresh, DELICIOUS!!!!) and a red velvet cupcake for myself. The cupcake was tasteless except for the frosting and has the color of bright red food coloring (blech). I am a huge fan of red velvet cupcakes, but Sprinkles puts Susie to shame in this category.
That said, I look forward to going back to sample other flavors and pastries, but would not recommend the red velvet cake for you die hards.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. P.S. These two items cost $8.50! I knew it wasn't going to be cheap, but really? -

There is no reason to get cupcakes anywhere else. Lots of trendy shops have popped up thanks to cooking shows etc. I am sure there are good ones out there, but I have never had one that was better. Highlights include Tropical and of course Red Velvet. We have ordered many custom cakes here and they are pricey, but you get what you pay for.

i was first introduced to susie's cakes as this is my company's favorite place to buy cakes to celebrate ANYTHING (and this just adds onto the reasons why i love working for my company :p).
at work, i've had the (in order of preference) red velvet layered cake, confetti vanilla cake, and chocolate layered cake. the cake is extremely moist and the cream-cheese frosting is to-die-for. if you want something colorful and celebratory, definitely go with the confetti vanilla cake.
today, i had the pleasure of stopping by susie's cakes bakery during my lunch break, and boy was it an experience to yelp about! the bakery is so cute and quaint! there are tables for you to sit it, a section to purchase cute items for your cake and birthday-related items, SAMPLES, and you can even watch the expert bakers make the cake in the back through a glass window. Some of the fun things they sell include sparkling candles, treats for your pup, cards, hand-stitched aprons, and other cute toys! the employees are all very cheerful and match the ambiance of the bakery. Another thing I love about susie's cake bakery is all the seasonal items they have during each holiday...for example when I went a few weeks before thanksgiving, they had a pumpkin seasonal cupcake (see picture) and tiny turkey cookies with colorful sprinkles!Listed in: Dessert

The frosting is addictive.
My sister lives down the street and has made it a regular habit to bring SUSIECAKES to every holiday dinner and family function this past year... so I've been able to sample them all and stuff my face with these addictive little cakes....my mom is an amazing baker so she is hard to please, but she's even head over heels for these deliciously, buttery, melt in yo mouthhh CUPCAKES! Good ol' vanilla on vanilla is my fave.
Recently, just tried the vanilla layer cake and its frosting to cake ratio...ohhh man! so rich, but... I.can't.stop. -

WONDERFUL Pastries and Cakes!!! This place is the place to go for your pastries!
I would have to say this place definitely beats sprinkles in the taste and variety of pastries. They sell cupcakes, cake slices, pies, cookiepars, cheesecakes, etc.... The whole shabang!
I would defnitely try the red velvet, carrot, and marble cake! They are soft and sweet. They cakes are made perfectly and are not overly dry!
If your looking for a birthday cake or a cake for a special occasion, they also have custom made cakes for order.
With the fantastic pastries, the price is definitely not cheap. It is a little pricey but definitely worth it!
They restaurant also has a pleasant interior and you can see into the bakery area!
Stop by if your in the Brentwood area! -
Review from Jen R.
SusieCakes has that old-fashioned bakery ambiance some of us remember from childhood. I appreciate the fact they're using real ingredients and honest-to-pod elbow grease to crank out all those treats. You walk in and a hive of bakery gals behind the counter are pretty friendly, asking how they can assist you.
All of that is great. What didn't rock our boat was the cupcake with frosting in the center. Far too sweet. It's already a cupcake. It's already sugar overload. I suppose I had the option to scrape off the frosting from on top but .. why would I do that? I want a good treat.
Three dollars for a single (good-sized) cupcake is exorbitant to me.
I hate to say, but they are style over substance, which doesn't coax dollars from my wallet. -

We came in here and nearly bought one of everything because it looked so good. Then we ate what we bought and were ridiculously happy.
The chocolate marble cake (the best!) and confetti cake (yummy) were just like home made and so good. The red velvet, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry cupcakes were just ok. Can skip these next time.
Cookies we tried were chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, iced molasses, sugar and whoopie pie. These were fantastic. Again, like home made, great quality and flavor.
The people working here were also helpful, friendly and fun. I'll be back soon! -

I am a big fan of SusiCakes! Their cupcakes have extra frosting in the middle of the cupcake! Who doesn't love that!? As a super frosting fan, I adore the extra bite of frosting goodness. They make some of the best frosting I've tasted.
I only gave them 4 out of 5 because some of their cupcakes are just okay. I've never gotten a cake from there, so I cannot attest to the cake quality, just the cupcakes. The extra bit frosting in the middle of your cupcake will be mind blowing, but the cupcake itself will just be okay. That being said, they are close to me and make a freaking tasty cupcake, so it is a win in my book! (I think $3 for a cupcake is on par with most of the other cupcake places, so I'm not sure what some people are whining about in their reviews.)
Also, their specialty cupcakes are to die for. They are 6 out of 5 stars. I just had the salted caramel cupcake and I'm pretty sure my mouth orgasmed. It was that good. I'm going to try all their specialty cupcakes from now on out.
The lemon bars are also some of the best I've ever tasted. So good! -

I had their red velvet cake at a birthday party and was convinced I tasted a piece of heaven....so for my bfs bday I ordered a cake which very easy, and the girl was helpful. After I had read reviews of this place and was convinced the bad reviews were just trolls...but alas....the cake was in fact over priced for the size of it not to mention not very heavenly as I had remembered...the location was THE most annoying to get to. The parking is on a slant so you have to be very careful to keep your cake level so it doesn't smoosh getting into the car...and the staff are in fact step-ford robots! I had ordered an additional few cupcakes.. And the girl kept saying "chocolate?" I replied..."no peanut butter"
Thankfully I checked the box when I got in the car because she put the chocolate one in the box as if she was programmed to do that or short circuited or something....luckily they gave me the peanut butter one for free when I went back in to tell them....all of that would have been worth it if when I shared the cake and cupcakes they actually tasted out of this world. They were blah...and the lemon cupcake was a bit dry and lackluster....the peanut butter tasted like sugar with a dash of peanut butter essence.
All in all it wasn't the worst experience ever...i just probably won't go out of my way to go to Susie's anymore....sadface. -

One of my favorite places to get cupcakes! I absolutely love the chocolate mint cupcake.
Oh and we had the fresh berry chiffon, which is their current monthly special. OMG they serve you a huge slice of cake! I don't even think you can call it a slice, more like they give you a mini-cake. It was delightful. Light, fruity, and whipped cream! I love cake with whipped cream frosting! I would give this place 4 stars if the prices were on par with so many of the other places that come to mind which have cheaper treats and equal flair Based on the Owner's correction I have made some edits to the remarks below):
Molasses cookie.
Waaay more expensive and not delicious compared to Milk (Beverly Blvd b/t La Brea Ave & Fairfax). The cookie here falls apart, is airy too airy to be chewy, has no density, but is laced with a fragrant white icing.
Individual cheesecakes.
The cheesecakes are pretty tasty, but not that much better than Magnolia Bakery (3rd Street E/O La Cienega Blvd). I think they have lowered the cost on this item. The current $5 price is fair for what you get :)
Individual pies.
The same size pies are $9 here but only $5.50 at Simplethings & Pies (3rd Street E/O La Cienega Blvd). I would rate pies from both stores equally. Very delicious!
Birthday cake (Susie charges extra for decoration).
Okay, the german chocolate cake here has best coconut frosting in the history of the world. But if you get a chocolate or red velvet bday cake from here, it will be waaay more expensive and not nearly as delicious as Buttercake Bakery (Pico Blvd E/O Overland Ave). Buttercake makes the best chocolate bday cake with cream cheese frosting on outside and peanut butter on the inside. The same cake at Susie's that cost $50 is only $35 at Buttercake. The Onwer states that Susie's bday cake is only $46, but they do charge to write "Happy Birthday" so the total cost comes to $50.
Chocolate chip cookie.
Big & paper thin. Not as delicious as Magnolia Bakery. Magnolia's bakes theirs throughout the day so they are always crunchy-chewy and costs only 75 cents.
Cupcakes.
Not nearly as big or delicious as Sprinkles. After scraping off most of the frosting, there is not that much cake left.
Overall, I have not complaints about the Susie's treats, except that the prices really devalue the taste of them.Comment from Houston S. of SusieCakes Bakery 5/22/2011

I recommended SusieCakes to a neighbor recently who swore by Doughboys on West 3rd St. I said, "you don't know what you're talking about." And "we're Westsiders, so you really need to support locally and give it a try." He knew I was a closet foodie and wouldn't steer him wrong and decided to give Susie a try.
Two days later I saw him on the street where he reluctantly told me that he had dreamed about SusieCakes' red velvet cupcake, and I laughed in his face. See, I'm always right ... when it comes to food that is. ;) -

This place is a winner! SusieCakes Bakery makes the best cupcakes. When you order cupcakes here, they would inquire the serving time. They would also inform you at what temperature the cupcakes should be kept in until serving time. Finally, they will call you the following day to check how your order went.
Tip: Although SusieCakes recommends serving their cupcakes at room temperature, I noticed that during a heat wave, their cupcakes taste best chilled--straight out of the fridge!
Why 4 stars only? Because I only tried their red-velvet cupcakes. -

I've pretty much been to every cupcake shop in LA. This place is very underwhelming. Maybe my expectations are much higher than the normal cupcake consumer.
The cupcakes i had were a bit dry. For the exception of the red velvet, I really liked the cream cheese icing but it was overly greasy for a cupcake.
Maybe they were day old cupcakes?
