Fresh from the Sumo Wrestler Turned Sushi Chef

A sushi oasis on the eastside of the greater Seattle area, Sushiman offers up fresh local ingredients along with his seasonally sourced fish.  Sit at the bar if you would like to learn a bit about Bobby, the proprietor, who had a successful Sumo career prior to returning to Seattle to become a restaurateur.

The sushi is always top quality and the service is friendly.  If you enjoy sushi ask Bobby to take you on a journey of what is fresh that day.  The last time I was in that was fresh halibut wrapped around local asparagus, some lovely king crab and grilled salmon - among much more!

Sushiman is a great little sushi joint in an unassuming strip mall.  But, don't be fooled, you will be greeted with warm smiles and the freshest ingredients on the eastside.

Was gonna give it 2.5, but had to round up to 3 stars.

Discovered this place, by accident.  Ended up here because we didn't want to wait at I-sushi ( see my review of 2-stars).  So we roamed around searching for sushi, and stumbled here.

On first impressions, it just doesn't seem like we've walked into a Japanese restaurant.  The atmosphere wasn't inviting, or exciting.

Food-wise, it was on the OK/Good side.  Salmon cuts of sashimi were buttery goodness.  The rolls were OK as well, but definitely not excellent.  I've had better for the prices they were charging.

Bottom line, if the prices were lower, they may have eeked out another star.

Although I've only tried two Japanese/sushi joints in Issaquah, I've come to the conclusion, that there isn't any good/excellent sushi in Issaquah.

I love almost everything about this place. The service is informative (great translations of what it is that you are eating) and the atmosphere is friendly. Sit at the bar. You will get the best service that way. Ask what is fresh and you will find yourself amazed both by presentation and skill as you watch. There are TVs all around with volume muted. They all play Sumo wrestling. The owner used to be a professional.
Very quirky and interesting, clean establishment. If you go at an off time you may be lucky enough to talk to him and get his personal story. Love it- Great Sushi. Bring a fat wallet though.... can be pricey.

This hidden gem has been raved about by one of my friends for  along time.  Last night I finally gave in and tried this eatery.  I was pleasantly surprised. The menu was direct and to the point.  The Sushi was delicious! I never had such smooth buttery Salmon Nigiri before! The Sea Bass texture was perfect and the Unagi was tender and made my stomach ache for more! All I can say this place is a must for Sushi lovers out there!  The head Sushi Chef Bobby is a retired Sumo Wrestler with a heart of gold,  he will never steer you wrong on his recommendations!

Must Try: Yoda Roll, Hamachi, Sea Bass, Unagi, Salmon Nigiri! Its all delicious!

Delicious, overpriced Japanese food in a very nice, cozy setting.

Service can be AWFUL! Once (granted they were busy) our hot food came we (kids and I) all ate then my husbands sushi came. He was just about to take a bite and the waitress ran over and yanked it our from under him and said "sorry... that was meant for someone else". Are you kidding me??!! Another 15 minutes before his "real" food arrived. By this time we had finished 40 minutes ago and were way past the point of wanting to leave.
We paid over  $100 for this awful experience. I later e-mailed the owner and told him being  a frequent customers (I've eaten there over 30 times) how disssapointed we were with this experience... he didn't bother to reply.

Wow, this is possibly the best sushi I've had in Washington. I went with a friend who goes there all the time and he ordered several things that I've never had. He made great choices.

Off the ala carte menu, I recommend the Jabba the Hut roll, the Yoda Roll, the tobiko roll with egg, and the toro nigiri. I also had the usuals, salmon and hamachi sashimi and a taco nigiri. It all tasted fantastic and like I was back in Japan. I haven't tried any of the regular dishes, but if the sushi is any indication, I'm sure they'll be fantastic.

Regarding the service, we were greeted when we walked in the door by the owner behind the sushi bar. He was very personable and I felt welcome right away. The waitress was very attentive. There was a very good balance of serving us and leaving us alone to talk. Afer paying the bill we sat at the table talking and she still came by to see if we needed more tea or water.

The one downside to Sushiman is the pricing. It is very expensive. To have sushi more often, I'll go to cheaper, lower quality places, but if I have the funds, Sushiman is high on the list.

For some reason I had the impression that this place was overpriced but really good. Unfortunately, that impression was only half correct. I say 2.5 stars. 2  is a little harsh because the food wasn't awful, and I would have given a 3 if the prices weren't so freaking high.

$8 for a spicy tuna roll? $7 nigiri? For prices like that, I expect some pretty good stuff, but it ended up being about the quality of conveyor belt sushi. We had a $10-ish "Issaquah roll," which was essentially a California roll covered with salmon, and the salmon tasted noticably less fresh than the salmon nigiri. Lame.

The place was pretty much empty, but there were two loud guys at the sushi bar talking about acquiring hot, young wives. So much for the atmosphere. If you like sushi and want to spend this amount of money, skip this place and drive to Bellevue instead.

This place is outrageously expensive for the quality of sashimi/sushi + location.

Mr. Sushiman, it's Issaquah not Belltown.

Rolls weren't 'rolled' right, unappealing and mediocre taste.

some pieces of sashimi improperly cut and very small portion for $$ I paid.

I can't speak for hot foods since the only item from kitchen I had was edamame.

This decent suburban sushi joint needs better service to justify the price.

We stuck to popular pieces -  Maguro, Hamachi, Unagi, Spider Roll, Caterpillar Roll, and Tomago -  hoping they would be most fresh, and were pleasantly surprised by the delicate textures and flavors (not  too "fishy").

Unfortunately the tofu appetizer was boring (cheap tofu with little flavor) and the service was uncomfortably slow.  We ordered in two rounds just to be safe and felt restlessly ready for the check before the second round ever appeared.  For the experience, $30 per person seemed pricey, but we drove home stuffed and cheerful.

Just okay.  I feel as though the selection is pretty overpriced, especially for its location.  Or maybe it's just the opposite, and the reason that it is overpriced, is because of its location?  Either way--nothing spectacular here.  It's not dead awful, but I heard a lot of hype from a good friend, and it just didn't live up to it.  The concept is pretty cool, in that the owner used to be a sumo wrestler, but I probably wouldn't advise driving all the way out to Issaquah just to dine here.

Decent food comes at a price...I guess?

I went to Sushiman already knowing the place charges an arm and a leg, but I was hoping they'd leave me with a stump at least. Little did I know they took part of my shoulder too.

The restaurant is located inside a mini plaza with plenty of parking. The outside decor is very plain and the restaurant could be hard to find for someone new to the area.

The restaurant is a small-medium sized place with plenty of tables and sushi bar seating. The chairs felt Ikea-ish and were more decorative than comfortable. The service greeter was very friendly as we walked in and we got very prompt seating. No wait at all. This was on a Sunday around dinner time. The service was friendly and helpful with plenty of refills on tea.

My friend ordered a few rolls of sushi, a miso soup and a handroll. I ordered a Sukiyaki and a roll. I felt a cold coming on so I wanted something broth-y to help my sinuses. The sushi came quickly but my sukiyaki took a bit longer, my friend was half way through his meal by the time I got mine.

The portions for the sushi were average sized and my Sukiyaki was generous. Although, sukiyaki is just broth, vegetables and some beef, I definitely think my wallet was raped when I paid around $30 for my portion of the meal.

I would prefer to pay more for good sushi rather than pay less for crappy sushi, but even Sushiman makes me reconsider that statement.

Ever want to meet an ex-Sumo wrestler turned actor while eating excellent food?  Come to Sushiman!

This place is owned by such a person and often time you will find him greeting guests by the front door.  Sushiman is modern, with TVs of either Sumo wrestling match or the NYSE on the screens with no sound.  There's a huge mural of a sumo wrestler in a ballerina tutu on the wall (based on one of the commercials that the owner was in).  The sushi is fresh and tasty but the selection of sake is impressive (a book thicker than the menu).  The servers are courteous and make very good recommendations for your drinking indulgence.  Prepare to spend a lot of loot here as this place is VERY pricey.

Went based on 'rave' opinions by people I work with. Eh, ok. The Chef /owner is supposed to be some big deal. Maybe he needs to start thinking about the quality of product he's putting out at these prices.

I have not been here in a long time but back when I was working in Bothell many years ago, I was pleased to discover Sushiman.

The sushi come in comparatively huge portions where the fish ends up enclosing the rice. Very fresh sushi from what I can remember and who can forget the owner who is an ex-sumo wrestler?

Check it out! Issaquah is not that well known but definitely better for having this sushi joint.

i went to sushiman because  bobby was in a show with me. i thoguht i would check out his sushi-afterall how many sumo wrestlers do you meet that, then, apprentenced post sumo career to become a sushiman?
the night my friend and i went, bobby was not in the shop, but-nevertheless, we sat and ordered.
the quality of the fish was great and the ambience well matched to the food-however, the prices for the portions left me feeling not so satisfied.
it may work well for a date night out on the eastside, but, as bad as i feel to admit this, i haven't been back since.

it is a great option for you in a high quality sushi deprived place like seattle (and for me...i say that because vancouver has just set the bar for me when it comes to sashimi/sushi)...but alls i'm gonna say is, it yummy but a tad more than what i would have liked to pay.

Sushiman is a contemporary-looking Japanese restaurant.  Sushi was not as bad as I expected.  Food came out timely and the service was pretty good.  It is probably the only Japanese restaurant in Issaquah.  Sushi is probably better quality than Tokyo Restaurant in Factoria but not as good as Izumi in Totem Lake.

Like most reviewers, I'd say this place is good but not worth the money. I've been here several times over the last few years and always regret it (usually when I see the check). There are so many other great sushi restaurants that do better sushi and give you better value for money.
