3 reviews for Sushi Yoshi
I love this place. This is mostly due to the fact that their waitstaff is willing to humor me when I come in by myself, order $20 worth of food, then sit there for 2 hours reading comic books. Sometimes we talk about dinosaurs and riots.
Anyway.
This place has some of the best sushi I've found out here in Boulder (granted, I've only been here a few weeks), the laid back atmosphere is perfect (especially after you've seen the sushi joints in Boulder proper on a weekend... ugh.) to kick back, have a few drinks, listen to the chefs blow your mind with their talent and knowledge, and chow down on some friggin' delicious sushi.
I'm almost hesitant to review this place b/c I don't want other people to find out about it! But it's fantastic, and totally worth the trek out to box store hell.
You know... I don't even know how to rate this place... so read my experience and judge for yourself.
It's the only sushi place I've ever walked into and only saw non Japanese people. It seemed out of sorts a bit. Like a steak joint run by vegitarians, it can be done, but something just ain't right about it.
I ordered my favorites: a tempera shrimp roll, an asparagus roll, and one piece of tuna shashimi.
I sit and watch the chief make my rolls, slowly, but carefully. I drink my soda, I watch the other customers. Finally my plate is handed to me and I begin to eat. Strange, I didn't order a cucumber roll, and there's 2 pieces of tuna here, not one. So I grabbed the waiter walking by and explained to him that I think I got extra... or something. Weird thing is, we figure out it was the order for the people just down the bar from me... almost the same exact thing. I had already eaten a few pieces so they said they wouldn't charge me for what I didn't order and to enjoy the extra so I just ate what I had.
Cool... good semi-free sushi. So they are a little slow... gives me time to relax right?
When I finish up the waiter brings me my check and it's wrong. He has added an appetizer that I didn't have. Once I point it out he takes it off and apologizes. Now as if this night wasn't strange enough already this is what happens while the waiter is running my credit card....
A Japanese (i assume Japanese only because it's a sushi place) woman walks up to me with some authority (like a manager maybe or owner?) and says that she heard there was a mix up with my order, she would like to know what happened. I tell her that me and the people down the bar ordered almost the same thing, I got their order, no big deal, I wasn't charged for what I didn't order. This is her reply... "Yeah, well we lose money that way." and turns and walks away. WHAT??? YOU fucked up not me! And I'm not paying for stuff I didn't order. You can't take it off my plate and flop it on to someone else's plate so what? You would rather throw it away then have someone enjoy a little more? And what's more, it was a freaking cucumber roll and one extra piece of tuna... your price comes to maybe $2? You could have made that back on me alone if I decided to ever come back...
but I won't. I don't reward rude service from someone who seems to be a manager or owner. Shame on you, you should know better.
but we lose money that way.... sheesh
Seriously?
Food: The sushi quality is excellent. I am talking about fish and not the American conceived rolls. The entree items are also tasty - I had the yellow-tail collar with their special sauce which was very good.
Ambiance: It's a no-frills Japanese restaurant that has good food and is clean. The owner is an actual Japanese national. The majority of the staff is not Japanese, but what do you expect in Colorado?
Service: The service was nothing to make note of - it was as you would expect. We were seated right away, our party's order drink order was taken when seated and our food order was taken when our drinks arrived. Nothing out of the normal occurred - we got our food on time, had an enjoyable meal asked for the check that came quickly and was processed quickly, and we left. Good? I would say service as expected which is good enough for me.
Price: The sushi comes individually which I don't have a problem with. I usually order an entree with a couple pieces of nigiri sushi to start. It's a bit pricier than some other sushi places, but you get what you pay for.
Repeat: I would and have. It's a great lunch place near my office in Louisville.
