Review from Danielle O.
New York, NY
Last week, I made a big transition and moved from my cozy spot on the Upper-Upper East side to the Chelsea area. I've been desperately searching for my new "spots" ever since. See, once you live somewhere for awhile, you develop your "spots". On the Upper East, I had my (yes, their hours were revolving solely around my schedule) nail salon, MY sushi place, MY gym, MY 24-hour superette, etc.
Moving 68 LONG blocks away meant it was time to hunt for the new "my" spots. Tonight, I am pleased to announce that SUSHITWIST has earned the title of "my sushi place" in my new area!
Sushi was bangin. Super fresh... Great portion size... everything you could ask for in a sushi roll... Even subbed out brown rice for white without the extra charge which I always find rude and unnecessary... Ginger dressing - DELISH! You know it's good when you're awkwardly trying to spoon the dressing into your mouth with chopsticks in between courses...
Service - flawless! It's rare to find a small spot with service specs that could compete with that of a corporate place. Our server (Han) was so friendly and attentive. I ended up ordering a glass of white wine that I wasn't particularly fond of. Han saw I hadn't been over-indulging in it and thoughtfully asked me if I wasn't pleased with the wine and if I would like to try something different instead. Reading my non-verbal signals... Check plus! He wasn't obtrusive... Came over at all the right times, (often difficult when best friends who haven't seen eachother in 2 weeks are babbling on and on about their current man-status situations, makeup, random celebrity gossip, etc.)
Food came out fast as lightning. Menu was extensive yet affordable.
Overall, SUSHI TWIST made me happy!!! Will definitely be back. -

What a find. Variety of sushi at reasonable prices and oh so fresh. Trendy lighting and an intimate setting help make this place stand out above the zillions of other sushi joints.
Not sure what they do to the Philly roll, nor do I care. But - it - is - SPECTACULAR. -

Around the corner from my office with bento box specials? Sign me up!
Lunch kicked off with some green tea which came in a cute little jar/tea pot and, really, who doesn't like their very own pot? The menu was extensive but I am a sucker for meals with the word 'special' associated with it so I had to go with a 'Lunch Special' combo. The $17 sushi option came with yellowtail, tuna, salmon, and shrimp (the basics), a 6-piece california roll, tasty sesame salad, fried tofu, a fishstick thing, and miso soup. The price is jaw-dropping, yes, but it's so damn common for sushi places to rip you off in this city that I'm almost resigned to it.
Nothing out of this world, but definitely a great option for a lunch meeting if you're in the area. -

Gramercy's answer to power sushi & the works without busting out the benjamins.
Tucked away on Madison between 27th & 28th. This restaurant definitely flies under the radar, but the food definitely scores on par with the best sushi in New York City. Now THAT is an extremely bold statement, but I hold my ground to it. Read on to be convinced!
Having been here on numerous occasions, you are greeted by members of the family who manage/own this place who are always more than accommodating and friendly whether or not the place is packed or not so much. Customer service always lends itself to a great experience and Sushi Twist is no exception to an amazing and attentive staff.
Usually my friends and I start out with the Twist Salad which consists of seaweed, mixed greens, tuna & salmon sashimi as well as super fresh avocado. All these flavors fuse together with the Chef's special sweet and spicy dressing. It's like having a party of flavors in your mouth. Please don't think weird thoughts, I'm talking about food here, PEOPLE! Although I am usually a huge talker during dinner, when this salad comes out I become a silent and stoic soldier on a mission to consume as much as I can while attempting to be cognizant of allowing others to have their fair share... I think... haha
The selection of Sushi is both creative, well crafted, with names so catchy they might as well be in some hit song! or even like icing on a pumpkin cupcake from Sugar Sweet Sunshine! From the standard fare ranging from California Roll, Spicy Tuna, Eel & Avocado among many others. What sets Sushi Twist apart are clever rolls such as the Dancing Eel which consists of Shrimp tempura topped with eel & avocado with assorted tobiko. Or the Spicy Lovers Roll with shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber... Just saying that name makes me happy!
My guilt-free pick (by the way, i love that they have this here) is the Naruto - Tuna, Salmon and Shrimp rolled in cucumber. No rice + No Seaweed = No Carbs. Usually I don't care too eat healthy, but everyone has their moments of weakness (to eat healthy) even if mine is the opposite of everyone else's weakness (to eat unhealthy).
For your fried chicken fix you can get the Chicken Kara Age! It's like southern fried chicken minus the waffles with a Japanese spin on it... But, still equally good. This Chicken Tempura with Sweet Honey Sauce will blow your mind, like woahhhh.
If you work around the area like me and can manage to get there for the lunch special, you can pick from a variety of the best bang for your buck dishes. My favorites are Chicken Teriyaki Box, Bulgogi (Marinated Korean Beef - AMAZING), or Tempura when I need to get my fried fix on.
The ambiance is relaxed and easy going, plus the eclectic mix of tunes they place always put you in just the right state of mind.
If you are in the mood for drinks, they also have delicious cocktails as well as a bar you can sit at and chat with the super friendly bartenders.
Now, I bid you adieu as I really should be working and not yelping... -

Just had lunch here: Steamed Shrimp Shumai and California Roll (lame I know) and both were yummy! I've had the shumai fried and that was a little nicer - just a little crispy on the outside. They have some interesting rolls in the $14-$16 family and your basics for $4-$7
The place is a little dark for lunch though. Would recommend for after work dinner or drinks instead. -

Went for dinner last night for the second time there and it was good.
The first time was a Friday night and the place was a bit loud but with a sexy, romantic kind of vibe.
Dinner on a Wednesday night was very similar but much quieter.
The food was good, prices are reasonable, love the deep house they play and overall a good place for sushi and drinks!

This place is great to take the corporate partners...
I was visiting a company we were consulting for, and this place totally hooked us up. Great sushi at a decent price, even for New York. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone visiting. -

Nothing special sushi combined with the world's worst cocktails makes for a near awful dining experience. Keep it moving, kids. Way better sushi places in the city.
Are you really going to listen to people that critique a sushi restaurant based off their Bento box lunches, shumai, and California rolls? -

Portland, OR
We really enjoyed this little sushi spot. Great rolls, try some of the larger special rolls they are very good. Fish was very fresh and fairly reasonable for NYC prices.
Chef was very friendly and we had him plate up some of his best offerings of sashimi for us ( the best way to really see or understand what level of quality you are dealing with along with the quality of the rice-- for more information see my tirade on Portland sushi restaurants) He offered up some very nice fish and chatted with us for a while.
Over all we were very happy with our food and service. Granted we don't go to a sushi bar for Cocktails so we have to leave that alone. Stick with the beer seems like wise advice but don't forgo the sushi. -

Second time I've been to this place on a week nite - not crowded at all.
First time was a so-so experience (back in Dec) esp after trying the vanilla lychee martini - OMG, that is nasty - tastes like awful medicine! Unless you love vanilla, don't try it. Food on the other hand was better - shrimp shumai - can't go wrong w/ that. Also shrimp tempura - yum!
Went back tonite since one of my friends loves the sushi there (esp the spicy crunchy tuna..or something like that). I tried it - it's ok...spicy not my style. The veggie dumplings are ok - a little bland even w/ the sauce. My fave is the shrimp tempura roll - u gotta try that. We had 2 orders of it - so that s/ tell u something. Manhattan roll is ok - nothing to rave about - maybe I s/ have stuck w/ my 1st choice & try the rainbow roll. It's good in other places I've tried. Guess I'll have to go back another time to try. -

I or shall I say my company had a 2 hours open dinner party here last year for our models fashion week celebration. It just opened 3 months earlier I believe then and I was wondering what would be a twist to sushi. I'll tell you-it's barbecue sauce and some other unexpected condiments no sushi chef should use. I would have challenged this sushi chef to mix barbecue sauce with sushi and guaranty it would be disgusting but it was far from that.
I only remember good things and this sushi place is on my list. The event had some good and interesting sushi. Baccardi wasn't so bad either with those special cocktails them made us from there then new coconut flavor "corzo". It got me a little buzzed. I had to host this event damn it...Perhaps my stack of cards wouldn't have been stolen by evil woman Norma if I didn't like those baccardi drink too much...lol. -

Our favorite sushi restaurant in the city. So many reasons...fresh sushi and rolls. There are so many choices and all the ones we have tried over time taste good. Our favorite is Crunchy Tuna/salmon (forget exactly) and the rolls are not small. The prices are amazing...you don't have to worry about your credit card bill!! For NYC..this is a gem.
The waitstaff are very nice and efficient and every time we have been there, which is only dinner, the service is quick.
Definately a must if you are in the neighborhood!! -

Not the best sushi I have had but not the worst either:) When I went the atmosphere was quiet and not trendy which I like:) The prices are very reasonable and the staff was very very nice!

Review from Chi N.
wow i came here thinkin this place would be overpriced... but for the types of rolls we got i am not complaining! wish they had more variety though cuz after awhile all the rolls started tasting the same...
ordered the following:
dancing eel roll (my favorite) - good balance of crunch, large portion of eel, just the right amount of sauce... and fits right in ur mouth in one bite!
tokyo roll - large slice of fishes with this great spicy sauce that was the right amount of kick!
volcano roll - the cheese was a lil weird for me... prolly too much for me to digest if i had ordered that on my own
spicy tuna roll was aight... nothing special
spicy tona roll with salmon on top was also ok sauce tasted the same...
ordered some sashimi pieces as well that were recommended fresh of the nite
- white tuna 2 pieces for 3 bucks a steal! fresh!
- hamachi again same freshness!
- my favorite was the mackerel with a seared skin outter and fatty inside that melts in your mouth!
the kalbi looked good as well... but i prolly wouldn't order it cuz i could get the same thing in ktown for better..
ok i guess i would come back to maybe try other rolls... pretty fresh stuff! -

Bummer! According to a sign in the window, Sushi Twist will be closing up shop at the beginning of summer, but moving to a new location further uptown. This is a serious loss of one of the few decent sushi places in this neighborhood. So sad...

I went to Sushi Twist for the third time the other night... and I found it to be as consistently good as ever!
Service is always good and so is the sushi! The ambience has a little to be desired... but sometimes that's ok when all you want is a nice, casual meal in the ever trend-obsessed Manhattan. If you're looking for a quiet, laid-back meal with yummy food for a good price, then I would definitely recommend Sushi Twist! -

I had a very plesent lunch experience here. They have great atmosphere and really good sushi! The wait staff is pretty attentive except our order took longer than I would have liked. Also I would give it three dollar signs not just two...

Hmm, i'm not sure what to make of this place. It came as a recommendation as a lunch place from a coworker. The sushi was fresh and well made, not the best I've ever had. The Udon noodles though, are to die for. Try the noodles.

Nice sushi place to take a lunch break. The sushi box lunch special has a lot of food and is a great value. I especially enjoyed the sesame ginger dressing on the salad. Although be warned that garlic in the dressing is a little strong and will linger well after the meal.

YUM! Found this place at random and totally love it. It's small and sort of hidden but the staff were very friendly, bartender super nice and, most importantly, great sushi. I recommend the shrimp tempura.

Went here for a business lunch. It was pretty empty, but the service was good, and the food was standard for a Japanese sushi place for lunch. Highlight of the lunch was the mochi ice cream dessert platter. Yum.

Some bad news, just walked by and a sign n the door says they are closing Sept 14th!
This is a shame for one of the few good neighborhood type sushi places around here.
They are re-opening something uptown according to the sign.

took a friend out to dinner for her bday recently (april 06') and it was great. we had: miso soup, green salads (yummy dressing), vegetable dumplings (tasty), shrimp tempura roll (awesome), volcano roll - cali roll topped w/ chopped crab, masago, and melted mozzarella cheese (a little weird for me but my friend liked it), and the beef teriyaki (best dish of the night!). bc the location of this place is in a dead area on Madison ave, it's never really crowded so I love it bc we never have to wait.

Tasty sushi and rolls but the atmosphere feels a little cold and boring. Went on a Sunday night and the place was kind of empty, so that it felt like there were more delivery orders going out than people eating there.
