Review Highlights
Even after a 45+ min wait to be seated last night (they were freaking busy!!), Sushi Tomi's nigiri and combination bento set still turned my frown upside down.
Let's talk fish first: I have yet to be let down by Sushi Tomi's sashimi selection. It is always fresh and delicious-- you can tell because everything is sweet and melts in your mouth. Last night was no exception. I ordered mirugai, hotate and hamachi. The hamachi was sliced a little too thickly for nigiri, but I appreciate that they didn't skimp on the portion. The hotate and mirugai were AMAZING. So delicious, I wish I had ordered more.
Combination bento: At $16.90, this is a really good meal deal. You get to choose 2 items from their combo list, plus you get rice, salad and miso soup. We ordered beef sukiyaki (personal fave) and tonkatsu. MMM. Although the pork isn't as tender and juicy as I've had in Japan, its still delicious in all its panko crusted glory. The sukiyaki comes in a huge pot and is filled with goodies like napa cabbage, bean thread noodles, carrots, tofu, and of course, beef. YUM.
Tip: Either go early or late to avoid the dinner rush hour, or be smart and call in a reservation ahead of time... unless you enjoy standing around, shuffling around to avoid the staff, and drooling from all the delicious scents wafting your way.
I dunno why but I've been craving sushi lately...came here for lunch with girls from work. We actually tried to come here before but it was really crowded and had a wait...but this time I guess because we got there a bit earlier there weren't that many people. or maybe coz it's just a Wednesday.
So i got the lunch combo and chose sashimi and tempura for $9.90. you have a choice between tuna and/or salmon for the sashimi and I got all salmon :D
so mine came in a bento box...5 or 6 large pieces of tempura with one of them shrimp. and 6 thick slices of sashimi....YUM! the box also came with miso soup, salad, a bowl of rice (which i didn't eat) and two slices of oranges...
didn't get any rolls but couple of the girls got them. the rainbow roll comes in 8 pieces for $12 something...everything looked yummy :) will def go back again
Great food! Everything was fresh, the service was excellent, tea was tasty and hot, rice was sticky, all in all a very good experience. We came just in time for lunch and did not have to wait to be seated. I will definitely come back.

Chirashi Sushi platter was dawesome. Sapporo Beer went down cold and crisp. Highly recommended if you are in Mountain View and want to eat fresh sushi.
Very tasty fish and friendly service. We ordered a few maki rolls and a ton of nigiri - yellowtail, salmon, tuna, white tuna, octopus, eel, etc. The fish was buttery and delicious, and I don't have any complaints about any of it. The fish to rice ratio was also very good, with large pieces of fish on small mounds of rice. This is a nice change compared to a lot of places that load up on the rice to save money.
The maki rolls were also delicious - we had a soft shell crab roll, a shrimp tempura roll, and the house special roll with spicy tuna. Don't expect anything very crazy on the menu though, as everything is kept fairly simple. This is a good thing to me, but some people might be put off by it.
Service was also good and very friendly.
This place was just okay for me. Well, I visited here coz my friend recommended this place. I ordered bento and friend ordered tonkotsu.
I'll try Omakase here and be back.
Although it's off the beaten path of Castro St, this place is legit and I have to honestly say the Chirashi is very good here. They have three different kinds but the special is good enough and very filling to the average eater.
I'm not complacent with their prices in the Bay Area but the food here definitely makes up for it. Also, the Japanese workers make it an authentic experience. =)
I've never been to Japan, but this place has to be the closest thing to it food wise. The fish was cut perfectly right in front of us by an absolute sushi master, no crushing or small ragged pieces, and the place looked and smelled immaculate (it smelled like the ocean, not a fishing boat). About half of the menu was a little advanced for us, but I would recommend this to any sushi aficionado without hesitation. I'll never go anywhere else!
Mountain View / Palo Alto = my 2nd home (prior to college).
I went to a music school in the area (CSMA) for years, and the commute from SJ to here was a walk in the park. My family would always eat dinner at the usual fast food places like in-n-out and happi house, but after going to BERKELEY I knew that my tastebuds desired something a bit more than just that...
Thank you Yelp for suggesting places on Castro (not to be mistaken with SF's Castro)
I needed my tempura fix. FAST. I searched the area for Japanese food, and decided upon Sushi Tomi (4 stars, couldn't go wrong... right?)
PARKING
This restaurant is on Dana, shooting out of the hustle and bustle of Castro. Parking was easy to find on the street, and it's a block away from residential.
ENVIRONMENT
We walked into the place a little after 5 and it was deserted. I was like - am I at the right place? Little did I know that the hustle and bustle would begin about 30 minutes later on a Sunday Evening. Make reservations! They have cute little booths with 'cutouts' in the middle to hang your feet inside. I thought they looked like mini tables, but it was just cute booths :D Definitely want to try that next time I come by...
SERVICE
They have FAST service. The waitress was very attentive (especially at the beginning of our meal) She was great at explaining what each roll had, and what types of rolls to get from the variety that we already chose.
After we got our food and when the place got a bit crowded, our waitress was nowhere to be seen. We want to order more food... Where's our check... Water please? Another server ended up getting the check for us and bussing our table. Where is this lady??
FOOD
We decided to order in 'rounds' to figure out how much we really wanted to eat.
---Round 1---
Soft Shell Crab
Beef Teriyaki & Tempura (dinner meal w/ soup, rice & salad)
Mackarel & Salmon [both teriyaki] (dinner meal as well)
Dragon Roll
Salmon Skin Roll
---Round 2---
2 more orders of Soft Shell Crab (it was a hit at our table!)
Caterpillar Roll
Tomi Special Roll (Hamachi)
My parents thought that the soft shell crab was great, so good that that they ordered 2 more plates (a plate only has one small soft shell crab split in two...) But to me, it was too salty and a bit oily for my taste.
Now for the dinner meals. They were average. Nothing out of the ordinary. I would like to note that the beef teriyaki was quite cold when they served it to me - badbadbadbad! The tempura fixed my craving, which was exactly what I wanted. The salmon was quite bland and dry - don't try it again. The mackarel (or saba) was delectable though, and my dad and I fought to the end for the last piece (he won. bummer.)
The Caterpillar, Dragon, and Salmon Skin roll were average. Nothing too fancy. I've had better sushi of this type elsewhere (read: Sushi House in Alameda). The price isn't too bad for these types of rolls. Plus, you'll get full. I would personally want to get the most bang for my buck, and shell out a couple extra $$ for a slightly better quality.
Now, what caught my mouth off guard was their Tomi Special roll. I just decided to order it because, meh - it's their special roll. It's gotta be good right? BINGO.
The sushi roll that redeemed them all.
I'd highly recommend getting the Tomi Special roll. They have 3 kinds - hamachi, sake, and spicy tuna. The waitress recommended hamachi, and I am glad I tried it. It is covered with salmon & scallop, and seared just a bit. The roll melted right when it hit the roof of my mouth. Deeelicious.
OVERALL
--The food was not as great as I expected it to be (am I ordering the wrong things, fellow Yelpers?)
--The service was great (until the place started getting CRAZY busy)
--The price was alright (although they do have discounts on weekend lunches - 15% off sushi rolls and stuff!)
I'll update my review once I try it again. Maybe I'll try sashimi, their rainbow roll, and other things on their menu.
Our family's best Japanese Sushi Restaurant.
If you want real authentic Japanese Sushi, ask for "Omakase" and you can't go wrong with Takao-san, the master chef.
Have we found our MV sushi haunt? I hope so. They're crazy packed for dinner, but we can always do takeout since we don't live that far away.
Good, fresh sushi at average sushi prices. Depending on how hungry you are, you can spend anywhere from $15-$30pp for dinner. All of the fish is top caliber, and they appear to have lots of daily specials. We've only been there once, but so far, we're fans.
Decent portion sizes, friendly and helpful people working there. Seriously, can't really complain about anything other than the crowds.
Sushi Tomi is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Bay Area. It's an unspoken rule between my friends and I that whenever we come here, we 1) sit at the sushi bar and 2) have omakase. Not so easy on the wallet, but it makes for a heck of a meal! The fish here is incredibly fresh and prepared excellently, and the omakase menu has enough seasonal variety to keep your palate interested. I don't think I've ever had the same thing in the multiple times I've had omakase at Sushi Tomi. One thing I always ask for is the ankimo (monkfish liver). Sweet Jesus, that is some good stuff.
My friends are regulars, so they always try to sit in front of sushi chef Jin-san, a.k.a. "JK". He's awesome! Really friendly and talkative, and always willing to recommend new or special items to try out -- and they're invariably awesome.
I didn't think too much of their sit-down restaurant though. We did the whole bento-slash-set-meal thing one time for dinner and came out less than impressed. If you're looking for rolls or teriyaki, this isn't the place. The highlight of Sushi Tomi is definitely the sushi bar.
If you sit at the bar, buy the chefs a round of beer or (good) sake. They'll love you for it.
Went there for lunch the other. Wasn't expecting much as the place had a very strong fishy smell - a big no-no for a sushi place. Ordered the lunch special, which was very reasonably priced. I didn't love the miso soup which came with the lunch special as it had cabbage and carrots - not the seaweed and silken tofu.
However, the main dish (chirashi) was very good. The fish was very fresh and didn't have a fishy smell. The rice was not bad - a little cold and just a tad dry. I prefer my rice to be warm and a little sticky.
Overall a good sushi experience. This is a restaurant to which I'd go back.
for the area, this place is great
i would focus on the specials menu, came on a Fri and waited about half an hour
on the omakase side of the menu, had the sushi special
$28 for 1 piece toro, sake, hamachi, tai, white fish, amaebi, uni, unagi, negitoro maki, miso = great deal, their toro is usually 2/$15
every piece was fresh and tasty
also had the salmon flown in from japan 2 pieces $7 which was melty and nice
i think the experience at the bar is more pleasant than sushi sam's
also had a 6 piece sushi special $17 from Tsukiji, maybe next time
tomi special roll pleasant for the non-nigiri eaters
Came with my parents for lunch one day. Had a mini-chirashi. Was completely surprised by how delicious it was. The pieces of fish were small, but of great quality. the salmon was TO DIE FOR. so buttery and melty.
Has since come for dinner numerous times. Never been disappointed yet.
The only thing is that I find their portions a bit small. But then again I am a pig so that may explain it.
Also, great tea. Haha.
Warning: This is not a restaurant for people looking for fancy rolls.
Some of the freshest fish you can get in the Peninsula/South Bay!
I don't know what people expect from a restaurant as small as Tomi... They can't help that their restaurant is small! What kind of ambience do you want? I'll take any seat I can get, as long as the fish is fresh. Prices were reasonable, and service is friendly and fast for dinnertime on a weekend. We ordered mostly sashimi and nigiri and had no complaints about any of the items we ordered.
This place seems like a good solid 4 star restaurant.
The food is fresh and never dry. The service is super fast. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that the ambiance could be MUCH better. It's small, cramped in, bad lighting, no music, wooden old chairs and tables. Nothing is really new and sleek here.
Good fresh sushi at slightly above average prices but lacking that extra ambiance that would merit a 5 star experience.
Their salads are good but the dressing is slightly watery. I liked the free edamame.
And.. why don't they serve free green tea or at least water with their meals by default? Another "meh" thing about this place.
Oh yes, this is one of those places that gets a line outside during dinner time. Call ahead to get a table.
I'm sure the sushi is fresh but I wasn't feeling like eating sushi that night. I did have the pork cutlet\tempura dinner which was pretty good. I could use more than 2 pieces of tempura though. The pork cutlets were a little dry.
This place is crowded, not sure why there was a wet rag hanging next to me that time and a small pail with water but I'm sure they have their reasons. I guess you pay for the food here and not the ambiance.
I wouldn't head here if you're with a big group or you're hunting for sashimi rolls.
Certainly counts as among the best sushi restaurants in the Bay Area.
Of course, you pay for quality, and this is not the place to go if you are looking for spicy tuna roll.
If you are looking for the most authentic experience, as if you are eating in one of the finer places in Tokyo, this is the place. The quality and freshness of the ingredients, including rice and such, is top-notch, and there is not a dud.
It's not a place I go frequently, but it's been among the best I've had in the Bay Area.
-Spicy Tuna roll (6 pc for $6.50): spicy and full of tuna
-BBQ Unagi roll (6 pc for $6.50): great tasting with avocado and unagi that has a drizzle of sweet BBQ sauce
Waiting always seems to be an issue since they don't accept reservations. Get there early, put your name on the sign-up list and wait for your name to be called.

This is a pretty average Japanese place off of Dana, about a block from Castro Street. Don't get me wrong, the sushi, sashimi and the combo dinners are all good enough, not aweful, not the best I've had. It's a good choice if you're stuck in Castro and craving Japanese.
Service is also average, they get lots of customers so the wait staff seem robotic and want to hurry you out of the place.
The Chirashi was ok, and the dinner set was good. But hummmm... their sushi has gone downhill ...
The service was quite bad too, none to speak of... For the Tempura, they forgot to bring out the sauce, and it took them a long time to bring it out.... Then they forgot one of miso soup, etc...

We went to Sushi Tomi after reading all of the reviews on Yelp. What a BIG disappointment. The service was mediocre at best, they were not flexible AT ALL in terms of making one substitution on their combo meal and it was SO over priced. I want to support local Mountain View restaurants but I don't think I'd ever go back here. Sura Sushi is heads and tails above this place. Save your money!
I've been quite excited to try Tomi's for a while now. High expectations can ruin everything but with 380+ reviews I was sure hoping for "Woohoo! As good as it gets!"
The start of dinner was a very disappointing and after tasting a super salty miso soup (did I get the bottom of the pot?) and too oily seaweed salad...I feared that Yelp might have let me down.
What factor could possibly save my disappointing first impression?? The sushi itself, of course! THANK GOD. Our cuts of salmon, spider roll, spicy tuna roll and bbq unagi roll were all so delish! I cannot wait to return for more :)
I was really hoping for a great experience, given the yelp reviews. Instead I was really surprised by the quality of my meal, the service, as well as the general cleanliness of the restaurant.
MEAL
I ordered the mini-chirashi lunch special for $11. I really liked the sushi rice but the pieces of sashimi seemed to be the leftover ends of the larger pieces of fish used for sashimi or rolls. Some of the fish had the skin still on and two pieces had bones and scales still attached! The pieces of salmon were actually really good but these other unidentifiable pieces of fish spoiled the rest of the dish. Maybe I was expecting something different or perhaps I didn't understand what this lunch special was all about?? I tried some of my friend's rainbow roll, which was very good. I wish I would have stuck to my first instinct to order rolls only.
SERVICE
The service was only so-so. We asked for water and the lady only brought back one cup. We were served our soup and had to ask for utensils. Our server seemed like she didn't want to be there at all. I don't expect fake happy faces but at least pay attention to the basics please!
CLEANLINESS
I needed to feed my 8 month old son so I grabbed a high chair since all of the servers looked busy. No prob. When I went to put him in, the seat was super sticky and the safety straps felt like they had never been wiped down before. It was really, really gross. I don't expect the seat to be super clean but the straps shouldn't be sticky at all. Eeeww. In addition, the bathroom only had cold water flowing in the sink. How does anyone get rid of germs and bacteria on their hand if you don't wash with soap and hot water?
One other note: don't bring your stroller into this restaurant! I made the mistake of doing so and there is absolutely no room for a stroller unless you happen to get a corner table in the back room.
Despite my so-so experience, I'm willing to give this place another try because the yelp reviews are so high. Hopefully I can write a more highly rated updated review after my next visit.
I like this place. The wait can be not so great so call and make reservations in advance :)! Last time we ordered the tonkatsu, hamachi don, spider roll and a giant baked clam. I love rice, so the tonkatsu and hamachi don were great; however, the hamachi slices could have been a little shorter for a more comfortable eating experience (slices were 3 1/2 inches EACH). The spider roll was different from others that I've had, there was carrot.. I don't think it belongs but that's my personal opinion. The baked clam is good when paired with rice because it's tangy, my dad wasn't a fan. Not something I would order again but nice to try.
Overall, the sashimi is fresh and the chirashi bowls are great. :) In the future, those will be the only things I order unless my dad wants his usual, tonkatsu again.
Cheap. Good. Fresh. What more could you ask for?
Warning though, this place gets packed quick for lunch, so expect a 15 minute wait! I come here everytime I visit my friend in Mountain View. It's probably the best sushi restaurant among the selection in downtown MV.
I defintely went from not really liking this place, to thinking it was pretty awesome. The problem was that when I originally went, I cheaped out and bought the combo meal stuff, and it's only ok. It's cheap and it's ok tasting but really nothing at all special. Seems like they reserve the boring sashimi for this, etc.
I read the reviews here on Yelp, and finally decided that I'd spend some coin here, plus my trusty wife told me that she really liked it. I went full tilt Nigiri Chef's Choice at $28... and was wowed. So THIS is where the good fish goes! They had some really nice fish, like hamachi toro, that was absolutely melt in the mouth fantastic.
The sushi that came out was the most similar to what I remember getting in an average sushi joint in Toyko, which is saying a lot... a lot of bay area sushi places are mcdonald's equivalent sushi, and this place is NOT. They have really fresh fish that has great flavor and texture... the salmon they use is not super squishy tender, it has real texture and is an absolute pleasure to chew.
I didn't think their izakaya - style grilled dishes were only ok... the beef tongue varied from chewy and tough to tender and great... and their buta-bara was not nearly as good as Saizo's. (but their's is yuuuummmmmmmm!) But, Sushi Tomi's sushi is really tasty. mmmm. I think that next time I go, I may sit at the sushi bar and just tell the chef to serve me his best!
I came here last night with a friend, and we both ordered a wide variety of things. For starters we had the asparagus with a miso sauce...tasty as a starting dish. Then I ordered hamachi and kanpachi, both of which were very meaty pieces, but light, and not fishy at all. Very pleasant on the palate. I also had tamago, kappa, and a tempura roll. The tempura roll had a strange type of mayo in it that I didn't enjoy so much, and there was a lot of wasabi in the kappa roll, but other then that they were really good. The tamago egg pieces had some interesting characters cooked/written? on them, first I've ever seen. We also ordered gyoza, and you have the option of choosing deep fried or pan friend, which I thought was neat (usually you just get deep fried, and no choice at other places).
Definitely a good choice for a local sushi house that's not in the crazed (read - no parking) part of Mountain View, but near enough to Castro where you're not completely in the middle of nowhere.
Best sushi in town. Plenty of authentic Japanese side dishes including otsukemono (pickles) and onigiri. Table and tatami seating. Some nights are crowded, so call ahead for reservations.
Went here once again. It's still delicious!!

Went there for lunch and it was the worst sushi bento box lunch I ever had. Got the chicken and tempura combo and chicken looked like it was a day old and reheated. Tasted like day old rubber chicken and gave me a stomach later that day. Tempura was nothing to rave about. Just really aweful food that I will never return for again.
Came here for lunch with a friend. Not that busy after 1230 on a Tuesday, only one person ahead of us. Very prompt, nice service. They weren't rushing us out, but we didn't have to wait long for the check. They had the usual sushi bar, as well as a lot of tables and booths.
He got lunch combo with gyoza and sashimi, no complaints. I got the lunch special, which was sashimi and rice. It came with chunks of tuna and sashimi and slices of salmon and one other possibly fish? Wasn't sure what the last one was. I'm not a sashimi expert, but the salmon (easiest for me to judge) didn't smell or tasty fishy/salmony. Quality was good in my book. Both of our lunches came with soup, although mine had extras in it like slices of mushroom, cabbage (?), some root veg, and leftover fish. Really tasty broth.
~$26 for two entrees, tax, tip. Food was 3.5 stars, but I bumped it up to 4 for the good lunch service. Would come back for midweek lunch.
We've been wanting to try Sushi Tomi for awhile, and now that we have, it was pretty good. Although their menu wasn't exact (Tsukimi Udon said it would have a raw egg and vegetables, but when they say vegetables, they only mean green onions), we still had a satisfying meal.
$22 for a shrimp tempura roll, bbq eel roll, and Tsukimi Udon. So it's by far one of the cheapest sushi restaurants we've been to with good food and pretty good service.
If you come around dinner time, be prepared to wait. We tried to eat here once around 7-7:30 and the wait was super long. But this time we came at 8:45pm, and it was fairly empty.
Sushi Tomi is also a pretty traditional Japanese restaurant, so basically if you're one that likes to have special rolls, you may not find what you want here.
Dine here at least twice a month.
Always fresh.
Consistently friendly staff in spite of long lines and full tables.
Toro hamachi (yellowtail) sushi melts in your mouth.
If you've never tried it, give their iced green tea a whirl on a hot summer day.
Sushi Tomi's alright, but it's not the best sushi in town.
My mom and I went for dinner and we ordered the dinner special with sashimi & tempura, rice, salad, and miso soup. We also ordered tuna nigiri and the tomi special roll.
I guess I will start with the tomi roll: It's filled with hamachi and avocado and topped with salmon and scallop. It's similar to a dancy special roll in that it comes with a sauce, but it's less elegantly plated and smaller. The sauce is also much spicier, but that's a plus in my book. I also like that the roll is tight and compact. This was probably my favorite thing we ordered.
Next, the sashimi and nigiri: these tasted fresh, but they're not the freshest I've had (can you say.. Hotaru?). Also, the nigiri comes with a wasabi surprise between the fish and rice, so beware.
finally, the tempura: it came out piping hot and was crunchy and delicious, but when is tempura not? the hot dipping sauce needed to be saltier, though.
All in all, a satisfying, but not amazing meal. I would like to come again and taste more of their rolls. I'm not sure why this place is so crowded... but then again, it IS hard to find good Japanese food around here.
very friendly and authentic sushi place.
i would go here by myself if everyone else is busy X]
it gets really busy, so there will be a wait most of the time
not of those fancy restaurants, but their service is very fast and you will get what youve paid for.
Although the proportions were right for dinner (at least to me), the meals are pretty pricey (combo specials are $16.90), and the Service was sadly, horrible. :(
The SERVICE tend to hide in the back and forget you unless you seriously get up and talk to them or frantically wave them down. I observed that other tables faced the same experience.
To: Sushi Tomi --- Fix your service!!!
We just came back from eating here and our food took over a half an hour to get to us. I think they forgot to put the order in for our sushi! Everyone else got their food, even the people behind us that came in twenty minutes after us! They brought some edamame to tide us over but we were ready to leave. Get this, a server brings over a plate of sushi after waiting all of that time and then apologizes because it's actually not for us! She turns around and takes it to another table. Ten minutes later, they actually deliver our plate of sushi.
Fortunately, the sushi was good but it took waaaaay too long! Our bill only had the total on it and didn't list what we ate. We did the math and figured that it was accurate but now we know that we should have really complained to the manager. If you go here and this happens, please complain. They wanted to act like nothing happened and could barely look at us and say goodbye when we left. Shameless!
The only reason I gave it two stars is because the sushi was good. The service sucked! Be warned!
It was delicious. I just wished my special chrashi had more Raw components and the waitress checked on us a little more.
She never came back except to deliver the bill. Now I realise they conserve water by not refilling our cups unless we ask but they could atleast check in once in awhile.
