I like Sushi Rock a lot. The reason why I only gave them 3 stars is because they don't really have very many salads on their menu. I am a huge salad fan!! I can go into what I "think" they should offer on their menu in regards to salads, but alas, I will refrain....
Here are some of my favorites from the Sushi Rock Menu:
Daegi -- Spicy Tuna, Scalop & Tobiko Roll
Poki Roll -- Spicy Tuna, Tobiko & Green Onion
Oshinko -- Pickled Radish Roll
Hamachi Negi -- Yellow Tail, Green Onion & Tobiko Roll
The wakame salad and the house cucumber and seaweed salad that they serve as you are seated are delicious. Sushi Rock has a relatively large Sake selection, which is great for me because really enjoy Sake with my sushi. The prices are very reasonable and the service is good as well.
Need a sushi platter for a party on a Sunday afternoon in the downtown area? Your best bet is Sushi Rock because every other authentic little sushi shop is closed until dinner time.
Ordered the most basic, easy maki: Tekka, Poki, Avocado, Califronia, and Rock n' Roll.
Guests arrived and asked if we had made the sushi ourselves. They sure do look like someone carelessly threw them all together at home. Large, uneven sizes, seaweed peeled off at the edge, and fish stuffed more at one end than the other, the maki was amateur looking. The avocado was old and brown. These are the worst looking maki I have ever seen. To compare them to the ones I make myself would be an insult.
We have ordered delivery from here as well. Katsu donburi was acceptable but the seafood in the nabe soba was just unappetizing.
So, if you really need to eat here...well then I really can't help you.
To the waitress and waiters that had to deal with me, I'm so sorry.
The happy hour (on a saturday!!!) sake bombs were too much for me.
I love the sushi here.. Its cheap, affordable and so yummy.
I am def. coming back
We used to go to Sushi Rock a lot, because they have cheap food and good happy hour deals. The service is pushy and are constantly trying to get you to order within 5 minutes of being there.
One night we ate there and my friend got food poisoning from them and was sick her entire birthday weekend. We thought it might be a fluke, so we went back another weekend and another friend got food poisoning for the entire weekend as well. I understand that you are taking a risk at a sushi joint, but two weekends in a row to two different people? Yikes.
Sushi Rock...didn't really rock my boat. Ok sushi..i had one of those spicy tuna rolls. I had a taste of their udon (not my order) and it tasted good. I also ordered their mackerel (it was supposed to be broiled) but end up looking like it's fried (just too oily) ..i know that saba(mackerel) is a fatty fish but I tried broiled mackerel before from another restaurant and it didn't give me a free lip gloss (if you know what I mean hehehe).
The service was very good. Ambience ok but I'm facing two lovebirds (young Asian female and an old Caucasian male) enjoying their sake and their Japanese beers (they ordered a lot). She was drinking like a Sailor... I think I will have a lot of alcohol too =P just to make him look good ...LOL
After a six and half hour car ride from L.A. to San Francisco, Sushi Rock hit the spot. (Of course, I'm only speaking for myself, not my kids or significant other.) It wasn't mind-blowing sushi but what we had was good enough. We ordered a sexy roll (why it's called that I have no idea as it only made me feel bloated, not sexy) and another roll whose name escapes me, chicken katsu, and chicen teriyaki. I always treat myself to salmon nigiri sushi and theirs wasn't disappointing. I liked that the edamame was served warm and sprinkled with rock salt.
The place wasn't too crowded on a Friday night and I thought the service was pretty quick and efficient. I'm sure there are better sushi restaurants in San Francisco but Sushi Rock served its purpose.
Treated my friend to lunch here today. Went in and there wasn't a line. It was around 12.15ish. The service was pretty fast and good. We got the complementary miso soup and seaweed/cucumber. The seaweed/cucumber was pretty good.
We ordered sushi. One of them was the sexy roll. It took them a bit of time for the sushi to get there. We took our time eating the rolls. We spent like 2 hours there, just eating and chatting. They didn't rush us. T
hen we ordered the fried banana and the ice cream but the waiter was kind enough to tell us that the fried banana came with ice cream. We got to ice creams with the fried banana. One was lychee and the other was mango. Don't know if they had more flavors but it would have been nice for them to let us choose the flavors we wanted. The fried bananas were pretty good but we didn't finish cause we didn't want to eat so much trans fat. Overall the experience was good.
My sushi was good but I have had better sushi before. The portions are generous. They make your sushi very fast so you don't need to wait that long good service and nice music.
SInce moving to San Francisco this is the only sushi places I have visited though I have been told about other ones that are better, I have yet to try them.
But so far the service has been good. Friendly waitress and waiters. The sushi has been good every time I have gone. They bring it out very quickly. Of course I have only been on the weekdays.
I had no idea this place was not only good, but don't rip you off either. They have an awesome lunch menu that starts around $6-7. I would stick to the Sushi Rock combo menu. I ordered the seabass, tempura, and for a $1 more, tuna sashimi on the side. I was on lunch break, and needed to eat badly. In under 10 mins, I got a piping hot box of everything with rice, salad, and miso soup. The seabass was grilled perfectly, the tempura batter was nice and light, and tuna was firm and tasty. The service is fast and friendly; the server even brought me water while I figured out what I wanted for takeout.
i LOVE Sushi Rock, on POLK Street.
This one in Chitown though, is just not the same. Not as tastey, not as fast, not as good of a setting. The cable car rumble on my ass was a turn off. Staff waiting and preparing aren't as 'with it' as Polk Street. Totally different crowd too here vs. Polk. However great price point as usual.
Go to Polk. Go to Polk.
Tuna roll was good but the Godzilla roll was too creamy. The edimame was nice with sea salt. I got a teriyaki beef and rice bowl, which was average. Meat was overcooked. Setting is on the relaxed side, nothing fantastic but nice.
For an untraditional dining experience, come to sushi rock--where the music rocks harder than the food.
very nice. The service was friendly and the food was fresh. they served a nce appetizer of cucumber and seaweed. I had:
Spicy salmon handroll
Hamachi carpacio (I love anything with jalapeno on top! or in it, or beside it.) One sour note here, there was a blob of raw garlic in the center of the plate. I thought it was radish or horsradish. Unlucky me - garlic BLEH.
House cold noodles.
I will be back.
I go there to this place frequently, for the very simple fact that I get a great deal. I love the salad and miso soup. That is always a plus. You have have a box meal and be out with 12 bucks for dinner before tip and taxes of course. After work, a long day of dealing with clients and equipment that does not work, just plopping down at the sushi bar and gorging myself on lots of really good stuff makes me feel better.
I very seldom order rolls or anything that is not raw. I have ordered oysters and that was not bad. Too bad it was like 8 of them and I forgot the strength of Sriracha and for a while i pounded a lot of water, not going to order that that sauce on that again. Their sashimi comes pretty fresh and so far I have not gotten sick from it.
I enjoy this place a lot and have been there many many times alone and with a few people.
Basically on a whim, my gf and I decided to get a room at the intercontintental down in Soma to really enjoy the July 4th holiday. Upon arrival we realized we needed a bit of stomach padding for the evenings "events". Sushi was a good choice, so we ended up ordering out from here.
I'm not sure if the food is better there or what but I have to put it at a solid mediocre. The spicy tuna roll was... well acceptable. The fish was good enough, but I think they skimped on the spicy sauce a bit cause htere just wasn't much flavor (come on now... that's the cheap part guys).
Dragon roll was pretty good, but then again we didn't even finish it... does htat say something? I woudlnt get tempura to go either... not here or any other chinese resteraunt for that matter. Save that for in house and stick wiht a salad.
This place just had too low of an impact on me to say more than that. NExt time I"ll try eating in.
FOOD POISONING! BAD FISH! QUEASY STOMACH & FREQUENT BATHROOM TRIPS THE NEXT DAY!!!
Ate here last night after the gym and the next day everyone in my party had stomach issues. The sushi/sashimi here was the only common food any of us had that day. Should have known since pieces like the salmon looked runny and several of the pieces smelled overly fishy (while fresh sushi should not smell that fishy).
I enjoyed the rolls I had their rock n' roll.. and something else that escapes me. But yeah.. they were good.
The Nigiri sushi.. BAD!
Their margarita... WORSE! Do not order this under any circumstances.
Sushi Rock is a fun place to grab a quick eat, but if you are serious about sushi I have to suggest a pass.
We arrived just before happy hour ended and I received a half price lemonade martini concoction I finished in one tangy gulp. You get what you pay for...
SR brings miso soup and a cucumber salad to the table straightaway, which is a nice touch since delving through the menu takes about 15 minutes.
We started with the deep-fried soft shell crab, per my husband's request. Was good, but to be fair, I have never been a huge fan. I never have been able to get over the "eating the shell" bit.
We ordered 3 rolls, none of which were thrilling enough to actually remember their names. What does stand out is the loud-ass R&B music. I think the highlight of the playlist was "Womanizer".
Give it a whirl if you are on Polk and need to eat in less than an hour before you catch a show at The Hemlock.
The fact that I'm giving this place 2 stars despite the fact that...
- We used a $25 gift certificate for a $60 bill
- Service was excellent
- They gave us free miso soup and lychee/coffee ice cream
- Ambiance was upbeat and lively
...must say a lot about the quality of the sushi here.
Am I wrong to order the "Sexy Roll" and expect something luscious, mouth-watering, and...well...sexy? Sadly, the roll was far from sexy; it actually looked flaccid. You can only imagine my disappointment when I got a droopy, cold california roll topped with stale-tasting salmon, completely coated in Kraft singles. Yes, Kraft singles, those processed cheese squares we all use to find in our lunch boxes as kids. They literally decided to murder my appetite and eliminate all meaning of the word "sexy" by putting that garbage on top of my roll. Not cool, Sushi Rock, not cool.
Two friends and I split only 3 1/2 rolls and we still could not force ourselves to finish everything on the table. I felt like we were on Fear Factor or something...like we were contestants being forced to finish plate after plate of really, really bad food.
If you have a choice, don't eat here, no matter how "sexy" they promise their rolls to be.
I have eaten here twice now and am always satisfied when I leave. They have authentic, tasty rolls, and miso soup and cucumber salad come with every order. Prices are fair and service is courteous and timely. The bathroom is a problem though, it's what brings this review from four stars to three, it's never very clean but fortunately I carry alcohol gel with me at all times so I don't feel too gross if I have to use their restroom.
Free Miso & Salad,
When you come in the door, then
Great fish free ice cream.
I got introduced to this place bout 2 and a half years ago. Sushi Rock seemed to have a wide variety of items including vegetarian and vegan sushi rolls. At the time I was going there, I was a vegetarian but I still had cravings for sushi. This place did the trick. After 10 months of no meat or fish I couldnt take it anymore and went back to eating fish. BOY was my first sushi meal TASTY!
I think my favorite is smoked salmon... yum! getting hungry just thinking about it!
I'm not a fan of the parking around there. It's a pain in the rear end to try to find parking out there.
The service has been good for the most part but I have experienced some bad service there a couple of times. I figure they were busy and perhaps those servers were just 'off'?
Anywho, I'd go back there again.
Sushi Rock has a pretty large sushi roll menu. The specialty rolls were also very inventive. In particular, we had a Mango Spider Roll that was very creative. The 8-piece salmon sashimi order was also very fresh, and the slices were pretty thick. The Daegi roll (mix of spicy tuna and scallop) we had came with a very generous size piece of scallop, but was a touch too spicy for me. Finally, this is the first time I've seen smoked salmon rolls (not the skin, but actual smoked salmon) and it was very tasty.
I also like the nice touches of the free seaweed, cucumber salad and miso soup to start and scoop of coconut ice cream to end. I certainly don't turn down free food :)
The service was also great, considering we had a promo $25 gift certificate, and didn't end up spending that much $ out of pocket.
After a long day of walking from the Ferry Building, to Coit Tower, through Chinatown, Sushi Rock was an oasis of respite. We enjoyed the cuke salad, miso soup that came with every meal. I had one of the unusual rolls-the Phoenix I think- shrimp tempura, avocado, with unagi on top and fake crab (for some reason they use that as topping). I was pretty famished, and it did hit the spot. Service was fairly good. They answered our many questions about their odd roll selections. Did not try Nigiri so can't comment on that... for an East Coast person, this restaurant was great- it's like baby steps if you don't want to sink in to the raw fish right away.
Nothing outstanding, nothing bad:
1. Dynamite roll (spicy hamachi) - good
2. Veggie roll - VERY good, lots of veggies and tasted fresh (would recommend)
3. Spicy scallop hand roll - very good, scallops soft and sauce had perfect of amount of heat
4. Gyoza (fried) - solid
5. Tonkatsu - PASS-- too thin for my liking, I prefer thicker cuts of meat, seemed like we got more "fry" than pork--these people are CHEAP!
7. Ice cream (ordered green tea but they gave us mango) - SMALL PORTION! It was probably the size of 2 to-go salsa cups--I guess you get what you pay for ($1.50), but it was good nonetheless (good thing I wasn't craving ice cream at the time, otherwise I'd be PISSED).
Summary:
* Decent food
* Prices too high for what you get = portions on the smaller side
* Rolls are on the better side of average
* FREE DELIVERY (will probably order here again because I'm a sucker for sushi BROUGHT TO MY DOOR), but wouldn't come into the restaurant unless it was to check out the happy hour...
Tempura green beans are SO good!
Happy hour specials on appetizers and sake are SO good!
Sushi is KIND OF good...
TV's with sports are KIND OF good...
Atmosphere is PRETTY good...
Location is PRETTY good though random...
The food is good and looks fresh. if they are slow and you are ordering a bunch of sushi, the chefs would usually send a complimentary salad (not just lettuce and cucumbers but a full veggies + meat salad) or other plate.
Service is a crapshoot, sometimes good, sometimes meh. Parking is easy. There is a garage on the Grant St side of the restaurant which is closed. If you call the restaurant from the gate, they will open it for you and let you park for free!
They get extra points for opening late!
I'm right across the street in a hotel, so I've been ordering from this place pretty often. Their menu is pretty extensive, especially as far as the sushi goes. I'm not a fan of raw fish - duh, you ask, so why order from a SUSHI place? Well, they do have other food there too. The Rock Box meals are a DEAL ($11.95) and come with TONS of food - if you're okay with one of your choices to most likely be teriyaki. I've also had all of their udon choices, which are also good on a cold San Francisco night. The potato croquette "appetizer" is HUGE - 4 croquettes and katsu sauce. The prices aren't bad at all, but the staff I have encountered on the phone or when I go to pick up take out really aren't too friendly.
The music there is meh. It seems like it's just the normal popular stuff they play on the radio. The place really does have people in there every night, even considering how the economy is these days. It's actually pretty surprising.
They do have free delivery with a $20 minimum purchase, which is a plus.
This place is OK.
Ordered some sushi and sake- both reasonably priced and came out fast.
Only beef was friends ordered Bento Boxes and they came out a good 15 minutes before my Sushi. They pretty much finished and then my food came out.
Other than that- pretty good. Had much better sushi but this place wasn;t bad.
I stopped here for lunch for myself, after my kids ate first at some restaurant in Chinatown where they were thrilled about eating a cheese quesidilla. $12 bucks for their lunch, and I could have made it at home, but because it's in a restaurant it's LEGENDARY. OMG!
My kids like sushi as much as I like throwing up through my nose (which is why I could never be bulimic) or say, tripping and falling down, or slamming into a glass door in front of a crowd of people. They are not fans.
Anyway, the sushi is ok, fast service, and I'm rating it 4 stars because the waitress brought out miso soup for all three of us, even though I just got sushi for myself. That's class. I had to refuse it because my son started covering his mouth like he was going to throw up, but I appreciated the gesture.
This is the same kid who just made me give him a high five after he licked his palm. Guess who's getting a time out? Whoooo! Us breeders ROCK!
3.5 stars. Came here for lunch today with my coworkers. When we got there at 12:30, plenty of tables were still available... I don't know if it's that the majority of workers in the financial district don't head up a block (towards Chinatown) to look for food, or if 12:30pm was just early.
The food is not bad, but nothing special. The Happy Lunch Box for $7.95 is a decent value. The next time I'm looking for Japanese food close by work, I'll be coming here. Sushi was mediocre, but still replaces Tokyo Express on my eats list.
Just because Sushi is in the name, do not be fooled in to thinking that is what is best.
After several years on this esteemed planet, there are a few things that I have picked up in deciphering the not so eloquent language of "Sushi, sushi, sushi." If the word "sushi" is in the name, be on alert.
My friends and I stumbled our way over here after an intense day of studying our effing brains out. Seriously. We were this close to popping a fuse, on that would not be mended by super glue. My hair was falling out, I was showering every other day, you could hide something from my by putting it under my toothbrush, usual law school final exam behavior.
Upon entering this eatery that is nestled in Chinatown (and thus desperate for business as the tourist destination is wont to be), we were transported to another place. In here, law school doesn't exit. Stress melts away as the bustling waitresses showed us our seats. We were brought complementary cucumber seaweed salad, complementary soup, and at the end, complementary ice cream! For a income-deprived student, that is GOLD!
I got the bento box with salmon shioyaki, saba shioyaki and california rolls. It had salad. Yum. And fruit. Yes. I scarfed down the whole thing and licked my fingers afterwards. Well. No.
The fish was delicately broiled/grilled. The surface was slightly caramelized while the insides were steaming and tender and succulent. I abhor dry fish. I loved this fish.
The price was excellent and it wasn't even lunch or some happy hour time. About $13.
Having confused this place for Sushi Zone in Hayes Valley (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), I was pretty excited for some fresh fish. Alas, this is NOT Sushi Zone, and nothing stood out about this place. I'm pretty sure it's not even Japanese-owned, which is always disappointing. The rolls were decent - not terrible, not great. The service was ok - not terrible, not great.
Some positive things I can say about Sushi Rock are: there was no wait, and I don't think it came out to be that expensive (I went way back in January...). Also, it was a pretty fast meal - always a plus. So, even though I probably won't be coming back, it's not horrible, and is probably the place for you if you're craving not terrible, not great sushi.
Came here last night for dinner with some friends and the only thing that pops into my mind was, pleasantly suprised.
To be honest with you im quite skeptical of non-traditional japanese restaurants with the deep friedness sushi and such. But when we ordered, I tried some and they were pretty delicious. I must say that I have become a fan of Sushi Rock for its decent take on the non-traditional japanese food.
Tips and pointers:
-Get the T.T. Roll, very good
-Prices are midrange to high
-Portions for rolls are surprisingly large
-Parking is non existent, and if its in a lot its pricey
-View is cool, you get to overlook chinatown while you eat
-Location is cool

Sushi's cool. Music sucks.
The food is good, there's a pretty decent variety of rolls and I love that you automatically get a bowl of miso soup and cucumber seaweed salad the moment you sit down.
Every time I've gone there, I could describe their service as being either very attentive or them wanting to kick my ass our of the restaurant asap. Just about every server that passed our table asked if we were finished with our plates when there was still a significant amount of food on them and we gave no hints of being ready to leave.
Oh, and I could do without the looped dance remixes of fall out boy and rihanna. They should either change their name or their music.
I'm a fan!
So many things to rave about:
-the extensive menu with unique rolls
-the tempura green beans
-the spider hand rolls
-the mango/tuna rolls
-the "rock"in' music, i.e. Lil Wayne, Katy Perry, and Jordin Sparks
-the validated parking
-the big screen tvs (FX, NBA, etc)
The food is fresh and the service is good.
Under New Management-Thank goodness!
I live just across the street from this place but had not eaten there in 3 years. Why? Because my last experience was not pleasant.
The sushi was dry and the teryaki bland. With so-so entrees and gyoza.
and a staff that looked like Yakuza. More interested in drinking Sake and watching their flat screen TV through dark sunglasses than waiting on customers.
That has all changed now.
My bento box came quickly and it was all hot, yummy and cheap.
Great tempura and tasty, fresh chicken Teryaki with 4 large pieces of creamy good California roll, Miso soup and salad.
My Hamachi Negiri and Saba was big, fresh and juicy.
There are some better Sushi places in SF but not many and certainly not so reasonably priced.
I'm not a big Yelper, but I was impressed enough to thank the manager personally and to write this review.
So go eat already!
Not the best, but I like this place.
Everything my boyfriend and I ordered was pretty good. I love the Salmon Snow Roll and the Una Ten or something roll. The Hamachi was just OK, though, it was kind of bland. I enjoyed the donburi with the beef, egg and onions, maybe could have used more sauce.
They have some sushi roll combos I've never had before, so I like that.
Decent priced sushi and I didn't try any specials, but seems like bento boxes and happy hour for drinks are pretty cheap.
Also, free miso soup, cucumber salad and ice cream (coconut/green tea)!!!! I am not a big fan of coconut, but I enjoyed their coconut ice cream! I would come again.
The food is decent. The service was quite slow!
I ordered my bento box lunch special.. It took 10 mins.. I also ordered the yakitori.. which took 30 mins... which is only an appetizer
