I haven't been here in many, many years, but the other night I was in the neighborhood late night, and decided to dine-in since it was one of the few places I saw that was still open.
This place is Not within the group of best Japanese restaurants in SF, but it's possible to have a decent and affordable meal, if you're selective. For example, I'd never eat raw fish at Tani's Kitchen, EVER. Here is a little better, I don't completely avoid raw stuff but I'd be very picky because quality is not the best. To be safe, I'd look for cooked food from the regular menu, or the value priced bento, and maybe look at the specials, that's it.
This night I chose one of my favorite dishes from any Japanese restaurant, Hamachi Kama for $8.95 (grilled yellow tail collar). http://static.px.yelp.... They have many nice appetizers too (25% discount during happy hour 3:30-6:30pm). The raw fish specials are priced at $8.95-$10.95, flipbook of pictures on the table - tuna tataki, seared tuna, etc.
The best deal is the value priced bento - choice of 3 items for $7.95 during lunch, and $11.95 for dinner (dinner has more choices: seabass and salmon, plus sashimi for $1 more). Really good pricing! each portion is small, but the quality is not bad. http://static.px.yelp....
About the positives that night:
regardless of your order, everyone always gets a complimentary cup of miso soup and a pickles with seaweed appetizer (tsukemono) after you sit down. Also free green tea ice cream with your check (dinner only). My grilled yellow tail collar was delicious. Service is friendly. The ambiance is unique because of the music, they were playing 80's rock music (ie. Scorpions - Wind Of Change, etc) that night.
About the negatives that night:
my tea cup smelled like bleach, so I used my glass of water instead to drink my hot tea. And the lemon on my hamachi dish was old.
In the past...
I swear this place was much better many years ago. Fish quality and specials were better (for example, it's one of the first places to serve ankimo in SF years ago), and the promotions were really cool. I remember when they gave free meals for your bday for frequent diners complete with a free bottle of (cheap) wine, complimentary cold sake, 50% off appetizers during happy hour, etc.
I love that they give everyone miso soup and tsukemono, not to mention ice cream at the end. (Coconut and green tea! Yum!) The atmosphere here is really great too. Clean-feeling and lively.
That said, the sushi here isn't the best. It tastes good, and it's fine quality, but I've had much better.
For example, the tuna in my roll was too tough, not smooth and buttery like the fish at Zushi Puzzle.
However, I also like the fact that they are on http://restaurant.com-- I may be coming back here again, if I'm walking around Polk and I'm craving sushi. But if I am seeking really good sushi, I will probably head to Zushi Puzzle
I love the delicious sushi rolls here! It was my first time coming here last night, and it was a really great experience. Their wasabi was pretty spicy, which I was extremely happy about...I LOVE spicy foods. My friends and I ended up getting:
-Poki roll: Spicy tuna with green onion (Although I didn't find a green onion in mine)
-B52?: roll with tempura & topped with unagi (Very tasty)
-Mango tuna roll: Verrryy good..and if you like spicy stuff, make sure to tell them to make this roll spicy! It definitely adds an extra kick to it.
-Roll'n'Roll: salmon, cream cheese, 2 onions, and some weird pink thing wrapped around. ( I would skip this roll)
-T.T Roll: salmon inside & deep fried with a dot of sriracha. HAHAHA the roll looked like nipples.
The last time I was here the rolls were just ok. Nothing sensational. I do love the fact that they validate your parking at the garage around the corner because finding parking around here can be a real pain. At night they tend to turn the music on really loud and if there's a large group there too then it can be a little hard to hear your own conversation.
Fantastic! The sushi is great, the view/people watching is good times and the sake menu is varied and interesting.
I had a spicy tuna with scallop roll, a spicy tuna with cucumber and onion roll and a tempura shrimp with eel sauce roll. All were fantastic, but I would especially recommend the spicy tuna with scallop. I also had the little blue bottle of sake. It was ok, but in its defense, it was the cheapest one on the menu. So, not bad for the price. The miso soup was good and was included with our lunch.
We got a great table overlooking Polk St and all the fantastic people watching/haggling that goes on there. And, its conveniently located near the Marriott where we stayed. So, when back in town, I will definitely be headed back here.

Okay, I know Sushi Rock is not authentic. It's not Japanese owned or run and the sushi rolls aren't exactly perfectly formed. I'd say it's on par with Kiki in the Sunset or Kitaro in the Richmond. If you come in expecting an amazing sushi experience, then you're bound to be disappointed.
But really, where else can you have a full dinner for $12, and a very decent one at that? Every meal comes with miso soup, cucumber salad, and green tea (or coconut) ice cream. Our sushi/sashimi platter was actually quite good and we all thought the fish to be fresh and easy going down.
I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but since it's 1) close to home and 2) dirt cheap, I'm pretty sure I'll be back. And satisfied too.
This venue isn't a bad place to find regular/decently priced good sushi. I got the "Hulk Roll" which is an off the menu item that was different from anything I've had before. Though I can't recall what was exactly in it, I would highly recommend it if not then simply ask your waiter what's in it to whet your appetite.
The restaurant was clean and they played a lot of MJ music, which makes sense at this time, but I'm told at other times they play a lot of dance/club music which I thought was interesting.
A couple of things that I really liked about this place is that they brought out miso soup and cucumber salad plus sherbert ice cream at the end of the meal. All of these items are complimentary regardless of what you order. That alone for me boosted this place to 4 stars...
If you're in the area and craving sushi and are in the area, I think this is a decent place to feed the need and it won't kill your pocket book too much.
This place strikes me as your average sushi joint. There's nothing really to complain about but also nothing that I found extraordinary.
I came here in a group of three, and we ordered a few of their house special rolls as well as some pieces of nigiri. The fish tastes very fresh, and they do give you a sizable cut for the nigiri. However, the rolls we tried (Day and Night, Hulk -- off-menu) were not too impressive. I like my sushi rolls to involve a complexity of flavors and these two missed the bar. This restaurant has a wide selection of sake, ranging from a $5.95 house sake to a $76/bottle premium sake, depending on what your tastes are. They also include complimentary miso soup, cucumber salad, and ice cream with your meal which is a pleasant surprise.
Great service, very friendly. We have had great experiences with the nice and friendly waitresses here. Food is good, great selection. Nice combos and values.
Definitely will be back for more food and drinks.
Came here for lunch... it wasn't packed, thank goodness. I had the chicken bento box, and I really liked it. My friend got a variety of rolls and they were all good. I would def come back here :)
Every Thursday or Friday, I'm there! YAY Sushi Rock!
There's also $1 parking across the street if you're getting there via car.
Oh, and look at the back of your Safeway receipts for 15% off. That's what got me started here in the first place.
Fresh, tasty, affordable, free miso, sea weed salad, and ice cream! Yahoo!
Food was OK, definitely not the best I've had. Pricing was OK. Atmosphere was probably considered trendy at one time, but is starting to look dated based on competitive Sushi places in the area, and in the Bay Area for that matter.
Went there based on hearing advertisements on 92.7FM, Which I thought they would at least have that type of music in there. But instead it was typical Top 40 sounding music. Not my cup of tea. Crowd seemed younger 21-25ish, service was decent though as they were on top of making sure everything was ok and had Great smiles on employees and wait staff.
I came here for the first time about 2 months ago with a group of friends. We loved it so much we made it our weekly spot to get together. The service is very prompt and the sushi is fabulous. All of us like something different, sushi or chicken teriyaki, and no one has every complained. It is a very fun atmosphere and also a great place for sake.
Now I'm just appalled that this particular Sushi Rock has an overall rating of 2.5 stars! Really people?!?!? This place is delicious!!! Maybe my palate is not very extraordinary and high maintenance in comparison to the many, MANY other yelpers that said the food sucked but it works for me and it makes my mouth happy. The service is good and turnaround on plates and empty glasses/bottles of Saki is speedy fast. They are at my table so much making sure my glass of water and Saki bottle is full that I almost want to ask if they want to join me for a round or two.
The sushi is fresh. The waiters are attentive. I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a table (and they are always pretty busy at night or for happy hour). It's clean. The prices are reasonable. There is great window seating to people watch. My sushi always stays in tact AND they have butterscotch disks! I clean them out every time I leave. Hail to the old school Brach's candy! I mean, who wants a plain old, boring ass dinner mint anyway?
Sushi Rock in Nob Hill, you're A-OK in my book. In fact, I prefer you out of the majority of sushi houses that I have been to in the Bay Area. Regardless if you're a chain and I'm not doing my duty to support family owned businesses, I love you! Keep doing what you do and I will keep coming back.
If you're looking for cheap, decent sushi, you've find a good place. Sushi Rock may not be the most 'authentic' Japanese sushi place, but it's not terrible. Free miso soup, cucumber salad, and ice cream is nice.
However, the music can be irritating (there's only so much techno I can handle), and if you plan on eating here on a weekend evening, I hope you like crowds. All the yuppies seem to come out on Friday and Saturday nights.
If you prefer to eat at home, they do deliver, and you can place an order to go over the phone and pick it up; it's usually ready within 30 minutes.
The free cucumber salad is nice. I don't eat Miso soup or the ice cream but you get a lot of free stuff with your food. I also don't eat sushi so I can't judge them for that but the very few veggie/ vegan options are just meh. Why do I come here then? Well my roommate likes this place so I come with her. And in a city this vegan friendly I do expect them to have some sort of yummy vegan options.
I've been here twice and so far so good - don't know what others are whinging about coz my tempura was crisp & fresh, the inari filled plenty tho they were missing the sesame seeds I'm used to from other places.
The music was too loud on my second visit but we mostly watched the NBA playoff game on the TV anyway so no big deal.
I'll definitely be back.
The sushi itself deserves 1 star but I'm only giving them an extra star because of the free miso soup, cucumber salad and green tea ice cream.
To save you the drama of my day, I basically was in an "I just want to go home now" mood by the time I reached Sushi Rock at 11:30pm last Saturday. My boyfriend and I came here with one of his friends on a whim.
My boyfriend and I split the Jay Roll. It kind of had the texture of jell-o which distrubed me a bit. The taste wasn't too bad, but nothing to write home about. The weird texture just killed it for me.
I got the "Matthew Roll" which, as a huge unagi fan, I expected a lot from. It was just crunchy-ness. No flavour. Looks NOTHING at all like the picture, don't be fooled.
Boyfriend said his teriyaki chicken roll was "okay" but at the end of the night told me the place was overall bad.
Definitely wouldn't come back. I spend WAY too much money, thinking about it makes me want to cry.
Another weird off-subject note, the waitress came by and switched our soy sauce with another table's literally 5 times. I don't know what that was all about but it struck me as odd...
Anyhow, this place was an incredibly bleak ending to a not-so-great day.
Just had lunch at this place today with my bestfriend. No wait and we were seated right away. I turned to put my phone in my purse and BEHOLD, a glass of ice water magically appeared.
Our server was sweet and quiet. obviously cus I did not even notice when she brought and took food away. Swift on her feet!!
We came in cus the outside had a big sign for Happy Hour (50% off ALL drinks and 30% off ALL apetizers) and it just started. We ordered the appetizer "Shrimp Stars" and a sushi roll whose name slipped my mind. shit. Also, we recieved "Cucumber and Seaweed Salad" and Miso Soup on the house. Mmm, both were tasty. First time having the seaweed salad and I liked it. The Shrimp Stars were fried filled inside with shrimp and something else and the dip was so freakin' good.
The music was pretty loud but I was in a good mood so I didn't mind it. Kind of upbeat techno. Pretty big place. CLEAN bathrooms. Nice service. No one hovered over us and they were quick with cleaning up once we were finished.
Pluses: The drinks (sodas) were huge. So great cus no refills! Oh and my bestfriend got a cocktail which she said was pretty good, considering the price was cheaper than Happy Hour at Chevys!! And if you take the bus it stops right in front. After you can go shopping =)
I would come again. I like it.
I rarely give 1 star but I have to do it for Sushi Rock. This place LOOKS horrible and I knew it would be, but I just needed to try on my own.
My friend and I went in and sat down and it was bustling. The hole place smelled like soy sauce and they were wiping the tables with dirty rags or something. The sushi itself was poorly handled. The rolls were really ugly and were obviously skimping on the fish. I worked at great sushi places so I know what's good and what's not. This place is a NOT!!
Go here if you have white people from Montana visiting and they've NEVER had sushi before and are partially deaf.
Since there are so few sushi joints on Polk St and Nara was filled to the brim, we decided to wander to Sushi Rock and give it the good ole college try. Bad decision.
My J-Roll was out of control spicy and there was barely any unagi or asparagus in my roll. Stingy on the filling is the worst. The other roll we got was fishy...and not in a good way. Ugh.
Awful sushi if you can call it that, mediocre service, and loud rowdy crowd. All in all if I wanted great sushi, service, and a loud rowdy crowd I'd go to Wasabi & Ginger on Van Ness...
Never going to rock out here again.
So after last nights binge of Salmon, tariaki chicken, me-so soup, and a few other tasty treats, miss Veronica and I were stuffed to the max. After a day of happy tax refund, we needed some food to soak up the Prohibition and Jameson shots.
The place was pretty full as it seems to always be, and the waiters and staff were fast and right on with the orders. The taraki chicken was juicy and there was a lot of it. The Salmon was nice and red, and tasted great!
I'm so glad this place is up the block from some of my favorite drinking establishments. Makes for a good way to get the spins to go away.
First of all, I got a bit sick after eating here.
This place is a joke, let me tell you that the sushi I had in a Bangkok mall was way better than this can ever be.
I might be hard on you guys but seriously if you are running a sushi bar at least stop buying your fish at Cala around the corner!
Let me start by saying I'm no sushi expert. I love Sushi Rock (the original on on Polk) Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. The have a great variety of food to choose from. The atmosphere is fun and lively. My favorite place to do SAKE BOMBS! I think there are alot of people who would disagree with the poor reviews...but those folks are problably busy washing down a tempura roll with a sake bomb (lol). The place is jam-packed on friday nights and weekends. Overall this a great place to grab some decent japanese, have a drink and laugh with your friends.
Great 4 happy hour.
Great if you or your boo is a sports fan...big flat screens in the corners and ESPN is ALWAYS on!
I was a little skeptical with this place, but I was pleasantly surprised. Now, I will blatantly admit I prefer sushi from Japanese chefs, but I was actually pleasantly surprised with the food here prepared by Cantonese chefs. The atmosphere is not Japanese at all, so don't expect it. It's more rock meets Ikea.
The staff was extremely quick and organized. They all worked together to make sure the experience was good. Dishes were brought out, sake was poured, empty dishes and trash bits were whisked away, and everything was prompt.
They started off by bringing out some cucumber and seaweed in addition to miso soup. When our server took our order, she expertly keyed it into her palm devise, including any additional requirements we had for the dish (i.e. getting something extra spicy). Also, while taking our order, she informed us of what was fresh and even when certain fish were cut; salmon and hamachi were both sliced around 5 which was merely and hour and a half before we ordered it.
My friend and I started with some sake, which was cheap and smooth. The appetizer, tako ginger, was alright, but certainly nothing earth-shattering. As for the rolls, all of the ones we ordered spicy were good. I wasn't disappointed by any of them actually (Day 'n night, Kiki, spicy hamachi negi rolls).
Now, I'm extremely picky when it comes to food as well as service. This place almost has it nailed down, but there are a few elements which I feel are missing that I can't quite place my finger upon. The free ice cream for dessert was a nice touch, but this certainly isn't as good as it gets by any means.
After reading some of the other reviews, I'm not sure why this place has a poor rating, I mean the sushi may be par, and on the non-traditional side of things, but it isn't awful by any means, unless I just ordered the "wrong" stuff by pure luck. C'est la guerre...
Came here for Sake Bombing. Got a bunch of edamame, a rainbow roll, sake and beer. The sushi was pretty good. Fresh fish, good size, etc... The beer and sake was what it was. Nothing special about the edamame...
Ok so they are far from being authentic. However, I like sushi rock because of the very speedy service, generally good tasting sushi, and excellently priced lunch specials. It also helps that they are 1 block away from my store and 2 blocks away from my apartment :) Quick and easy decent sushi. Plus they serve miso soup, seaweed salad, and sometimes ice cream comlimentary.
On the down side, they often blast the music too loud at night.
Why does there always seem to be at least one large group of drunk frat boys here?
The sushi is completely unimaginative and the quality of the fish is sub par. Most of their other dishes are okay but I have ordered the teriyaki salmon and had it smell fishy and taste off.
The service is spotty and I have witnessed servers checking their cell phones in the middle of a busy shift when it takes me twenty minutes to get their attention so I can get more water. I understand, work is boring and you'd rather hang with your friends. But could you at least do your job first and wait till it isn't as busy?
I dunno. We wanted to go to Swan oyster depot but they were closed for a week; some kind of Independence day holiday. Communists. The roommate suggested Indian, which I quickly vetoed. I wanted something that would make me feel good but wouldn't give me diarrhea. Sushi rock tasted pretty good and I didn't get sick but it wasn't the best sushi ever. The salmon sashimi was good. 4 huge pieces of fish for $6. The California roll was tasty and I was pretty excited about the kiki roll: unagi, scallops, and kani (crab). It was OK but the rolls were falling apart. So -2 stars for lack of showmanship. Oh yeah, the seaweed salad was huge but you really need 2 people to eat it.
So Sushi Rock has pretty decent sushi. It's great for delivery, but I'm pretty much over going there for dinner. The one on Pine and Grant is way more mellow than this one, so if I do venture back, it will likely be at that location (well...and it's closer to my apartment).
The free miso soup, cucumber salad, and ice cream is always appreciated. I just don't like the loud music all the time. I know, I sound like an old man, but unless it's late on a Friday or Saturday night I don't really care for it. If I was looking for that, I would go to Ryoko since it's a cool underground place and they usually have a DJ instead of an iPod.
Sushi Rock has always done me right over the years and it's good for groups and late nights and lazy weeknight deliveries, but I won't be rocking out there on a Tuesday anymore.
Food/quality:
I would have to give the food here a 2 or 3 unfortunately. The sashimi from the sashimi combo did not taste very fresh. Out of all the sushi we had, though I liked the kohibito roll the best. The cindy roll tasted a little too sour for me. Another item I tried was the sukiyaki beef bowl, which I did enjoy...it wasn't overly salty like I have experienced at other places. I did enjoy the complimentary ice cream at the end of dinner.
Service:
Service here was friendly and attentive.
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere was lively and loud music was playing the entire time we were dining. The dining area was 3/4 full.
Value:
The price wasn't bad, but I just wish the sushi was better.
I went here last week with my girlfriend for happy hour. The sushi was way below average, but the service was pretty good at least. I've personally had better tasting sushi from a super market off the shelf.
My mango tuna roll stuck to the plate so when we were trying to eat it the pieces would fall apart. What is this sushi amature night?! For a $15 dollar role I would think you could get this right. The rest of the roles were bland and unflavorful.
So we will be skipping this place and trying another sushi spot next time and I recommend that you save your money and do the same!
I was a bit underwhelmed. The staff were very fast and they did offer some complimentary things, but overall, I felt there's a lot to improve on.
The first thing that I noticed was the very loud, high-energy music. I literally had a headache from it. The complimentary miso soup and cucumber and seaweed salad were a nice gesture, but I found the tofu in the miso soup tough and the salad lacked flavor. I think it may have needed some more rice wine vinegar and some red onion.
I'd say the orders needed to be more substantial in general. The gyoza was pan-fried well, but barely had any meat in the filling. We ordered the Day and Night roll, the roll with albacore tuni, garlic and onion, and hamachi nigiri. The Day and Night roll was more flavorful, but the kani pieces were too big-- larger than the tuna and salmon. The hamachi nigiri was the best of the three.
The serving plate looked unclean; it had a lot of fingerprints on it. To finish, they gave complimentary coconut and green tea ice cream. That was nice. Prices are average.
Summary:
* Crazy packed and loud customers screaming at the top of their lungs because of the loud blaring music.
* Hit or miss service which is not entirely horrible or anything, its just that this place is so packed and loud they are prone to more mistakes; such as guessing orders or hard to hear/understand over noise.
* Overall above average food. The ingredients taste very fresh and the sushi is good. I read a few reviews here and was sort of shocked to hear some complaints on the food. Maybe I came on a golden night?? All I know is everyones food was very tasty and no one complained.
Really that is all there is to know. This is a great location to visit with a group. Probably wouldn't want to go here for a one on one dinner. You'd pretty much want to kill yourself because all you can do is scream to be heard.
It sort of reminded me of Blow Fish, but I think blow fish is better as a "semi-party" atmosphere and has a better decor. Overall this is a decent spot with good food!
Sushi Rock wasn't all that bad! Yes, it's the mass Japanese "kind-of" fast food place, but when you add free soup and free ice cream, it totally makes it a lot better! The servers were pretty nice too.
A friend and I went to Sushi Rock after a VERY (bunny finger quotations) productive day at work. We got some crazy-crunchy-fruity-spicy sushi rolls that were actually pretty tasty given the fact that I don't really like fruit (mango in this case) all over my fish. Aside from the rolls, we got string bean tempura with gyoza sauce--it was exactly the crunch that I was longing for all day.
Note on the free ice cream: they gave us two flavors--I think that's usually the case. Mango for sure and sesame? The mango was a little piece of heaven in my mouth. The sesame--different. Definitely something to try, but something you have to get used to.
I've always had a good time coming here. They have some very interesting rolls that are worth the price for their size and quality.
It's pretty impressive that every person gets a free miso soup, small seaweed salad, and ice cream with your meal. I mean that is a step up from the usual edamame. We even got extra ice cream last time we were there because the waitress brought out too many.
The Mango Spider - really really good! I've had a few of their other rolls as well. All the sushi is always fresh and put together really well.
The last time I came here was for a birthday and so I got a Rock Box special in attempt to spend a little less money. My box had tempura, saba teriyaki, and salmon sashimi (an extra $1). My bf's box had seabass teriyaki, ton katsu, and oyster katsu. I was a little disappointed with the saba teriyaki because it was slightly dry, but everything else was yummy. I really liked the seabass teriyaki and oyster katsu but didn't get to try the ton katsu. The box also came with rice and salad - worth the price if you ask me.
They also have a really wide variety of sake and even explanations of the differences between the choices. I still didn't know what to pick and ended up getting the house sake since we did a couple of sake bombs.
This is a pretty chill place with good food and service. Just watch out for parking because that's not all too fun. Although Sushi Rock does validate for the garage down the street for an hour I think.
Parking was a bit of a pain at 9pm at night but the parking karma kicked in.
They should have a bouncer at the front door because it's rocking in here. I know they call this place sushi rock but come on now. The music was a bit on the loud side and geared towards a club hip hop mix.
$66 bucks for 4 people.
4 rolls
1 bento box
1 Curry katsu
I've definitely experienced better rolls and especially at that price. Everything else you can't really mess up. Well actually... the tempura sweet potato was dry. To end it on a good note the service was very attentive.
This is one of the only sushi restaurants I go to except the all you can eat buffets. But this one is good enough. Me and my friend always go here to eat cheap sushi that we can share. We always get the sushi rock box and a dragon roll. The total comes to around $20. Its not that bad. Really quiet whenever we come by. Somehow the service just doesn't feel good to me in some way. Overall its a 4/5.
Sushi dished with a techno boppin' beat in the Anime tradition of old Nippon. Bento boxes for lunch & dinner with dollops of mango ice cream with the receipt and our menu is done. Too much? Go Quickly a skip north. Not your swing? Then you needn't be on Polk ... hunt for the House of Prime Rib on the Van Ness mainline. If you choose the red pill, then Ratchet your expectations to, oh' about a 3-star rating, and you'll enjoy fine.
