So many people hate on Sushi Rock because like Tommy P. said: "it's the McSushi of SF". But to to be honest that's kinda what your getting when you go to Sushi Rock. You're not going there to get a 5 star experience, your going because your hungry, in the mood for sushi and want something cheap and fast.
I personally love that for 15 bucks I can get the Sushi Rock box that includes miso soup, a bow of rice, veggie tempura, 8 pieces of sushi, sea weed salad and an ice cream at the end. Talk about getting your moneys worth. Is it the best sushi that's every passed my lips? No. Would I come here when I'm feeling fancy or on a date? No. But it's the perfect place when I'm starving and meeting a friend.
The service is mehh..they always take my plates a little to fast and they blast LMFAO and J.Lo like no ones business, but once you can ignore all the noise and the tiny hands grabbing for your plate, the place ain't bad. -

never actually eaten in here, but i have had them deliver twice. there's a $20 minimum, but that's easy to hit especially because i love food.
the sushi i ordered from them was surprisingly fresh for having been delivered. i ordered a spider roll, and it was like they had just made it which was cool! i had also ordered a vegetable udon which was still warm and delicious by the time it had arrived. seaweed salad was good as well.
they used nice tupperware to deliver everything (none of that cheapo stuff), so i actually still have the containers they gave me from last time! it was weird because i had ordered an iced tea that came in one of those tupperware containers... oh well!! haha! i just moved to SF which is why i don't mind getting free utensils / tupperware :)
for delivery, this place isn't bad. i used http://grubhub.com which made everything easy. can't wait to get my foooood today!! i ordered the exact same stuff.
still, 3 stars because it's not like... great sushi or anything. just satiable :) -

**WHY 2 STARS?**
Their happy lunch box bento boxes are decent, but I can't say the same for the sushi. There is a good variety of choices to put in your bento boxes, and the food that comes out is not bad at all. Despite its namesake however, I would avoid the sushi here.
**Favorites** Tempura. Beef teriyaki.
**Recommend?** If you're working nearby and want a change from your everyday lunch food, this would be a decent option. This would be the only time I'd be willing to come here. Otherwise, there are tons of better options out there. Don't expect too much and you'll leave happy.
I've come here for lunch a few times. They start you off with complimentary miso soup and cucumber seaweed salad, which is nice. I stay away from the sushi and stick to the bento boxes and noodles. It's not a bad place for lunch if you're in the mood for Japanese food. They let you choose three items for their bento boxes for about $8, which is a pretty decent price. The choices include: california roll, avocado roll, kappa roll, inari, saba shioyaki/teriyaki, beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, veggie/shrimp/combo tempura, gyoza, chicken katsu, tonkatsu (and maybe a couple more that I forgot). -

When I lived right by this place, I would occasionally order food there when I was really desperate. Then I found Nara Sushi across the street and that was so much better.
The few repeat visits I made here in moments of weakness did not bode well. It was like the walk of shame when I carried my takeout home. -

Used to frequent this restaurant when I lived in the bay area 10 years ago. My Culinary Arts School was down the street, so I would pass by it every so often, One night the GF and i decided to try it out. It wasn't the very best Sushi/Japaneese restaurant i've been too. But I couldn't really find any negatives either. The food was really quite good and the vibe inside was very chill. So I became a frequent patron of the establishment. I'm back home in San Diego now. i wish there was restaurant like this here!

Worst sushi I've ever tasted! The rice was not soft and the sashimi was not fresh.
Sushi rolls that can easily come apart = bad skill!!
Sashimi that are not fresh = bad quality!
Servers who gives u attitude = bad customer services!
To Sushi Rock owner: I am impressed how crappy your sushi can be, and still remain in business. Perhaps you are selling lust from the slutty waitress as service?
Do Not Come Here!
I am glad that yelp exist nowadays! There are lots of sushi places in sf waiting for you to explore. Why ruining your dinning experiences in SF when you can enjoy a nice meal somewhere else? -

GREAT PLACE FOR BIG GROUPS. We went to Sushi Rock for my friends birthday last weekend, and they were great with big parties. The service was quick and they kindly broke up the check into groups of 4 for us.
However, the food isn't that great. If you are looking for a good sushi dinner this isn't the place. It wasn't bad, but as a sushi snob I wouldn't come here for a nice dinner. But if you want to get together with a bunch of friends, this is the right place. -

The fish is not exactly fresh and the rice in my nigiri was kind of tough. The maguro was alright. The hamachi pieces on my hamachi nigiri was a bad cut. Each piece was about to fall apart into two. The rock and roll was crunchy and had an appropriate amount of sauce. The handrolls are pretty packed and a good size.
The service is not bad. The lunch specials are a pretty good deal, especially the happy box and curry entrees. The curry entrees are homestyled. There is also a http://restaurant.com coupon.
This place is like a diner version of a Japanese sushi restaurant. I would recommend going to a more traditional Japanese sushi restaurant or a real diner instead. -

Sushi Rock. What we can't rock... we roll!!!
Meh. It was alright. I mean, when Ebisu is your go to place for bomb ass sushi, most other establishments will fall short. That's just how it is.
Deep fried bacon shrimp- Jes, JES! Tough to screw up bacon and deep fried, right?? This was a hit.
Tempura Green Beans- Bueno. Very light and nice ginger "sauce" served with it.
Spider roll- was boring. Ebisu has spoiled us with giant, succulent fried crab legs and this one was boring and bland
Salmon roll- was no bueno. The salmon was pretty good, but the wrapper was just about as disgusting as I've ever had at a sushi restaurant. So much so that we were choking on it well after we left.
The service was very good, but it's just not worth the time to get decent sushi, when you know you can get bomb sushi by driving a bit further up the road and making a few nascar turns. -

I live quite close to Sushi Rock, and every couple of months I end up thinking to myself, "Hmm, maybe I should give it another shot." After all, I'm always walking by at night seeing these big parties of people talking and laughing and just having a dandy time. I forlornly raise my hand to the glass and lightly touch it, wistfully gazing in at the warmth and camaraderie, realizing that such simple joys are eternally out of reach for a miserable loner like myself. Meanwhile, one of the dining party members gets momentarily distracted from the conversation. They glance out the window, consider how late it's getting, and somehow deign to notice my pathetic visage. Amused, the distracted reveler shouts some indiscernible words to the rest of the group and points derisively through the window at me. The whole table turns; and as they slowly comprehend me, a rousing round of laughter lights up the group. Then I am entirely forgotten almost as abruptly as I was noticed. They return to their conversation, putting me entirely out of mind. I miserably skulk away, unsuccessfully trying to cover my tears. No one notices.
(To be fair, I only really cried the first seven or eight times this happened.)
None of this really has anything to do with my review. I'm just trying to give you a little context.
So anyway, every now and again I come here to try it out. And every time, I'm just disappointed. The first time I was given a seat in the corner where, I kid you not, I was situated directly underneath some kind of leak. I was being leaked upon! Or at least dripped upon. Leaked or dripped--it's pretty unpleasant either way.
Literally every time I've come here I've had to contend with flies buzzing near my food. And in general, the tables and surfaces all have a kind of a sticky vibe to it. Neither of these things are particularly appetizing, especially for a sushi place.
One other negative that comes to mind is that the tempura sauce just isn't very good.
That all said, they give you pretty good portions for the price. You get miso soup and a little salad with your meal. I've also gotten green tea ice cream afterward, although that hasn't been consistent. And the sushi itself has always been perfectly passable.
Overall, Sushi Rock is consistently just kind of disappointing. The only really compelling reason I can think of for coming here is if you have a larger group--like, five or more. All the other nearby sushi places I can think of are on the smallish side, whereas Sushi Rock can comfortably cope with larger parties.
Otherwise, I'd recommend heading elsewhere for your sushi fix. -

This place is easily on the repeat list.
Nothing fancy, but the combo/bento boxes are a good deal.
I've never seen it crowded so far. -
Review from Ashley J.
Came here with a group for a later dinner, and it was still pretty busy which was a little surprising. Meals come with a marinated seaweed and cucumber mixture, miso soup, and free ice cream for dessert which they bring to your table. Pretty awesome!
All the sushi we ordered was decent, and alright by me. I didn't have any unpleasantness in my experience, but this place is not out of this world. Come here for a casual sushi dinner. Fun for groups! -

PAS - Perfectly Adequate Sushi.
Not the best in the neighborhood - sushi groove, rapture, or okoze are all up there - but they deliver and they seem like nice people. -

The overall is good.
They serve seaweed salad and miso soup as the starter.
I like:
Beef teriyaki - the portion is big, and it tastes good. I love it~
Day and Light roll - fresh and tasty.
They also have ice-cream as the dessert for free. -
Review from Katie V.
Skipped this place so many times and then finally tried it a couple months ago. Here's the breakdown:
1. I live a block away so it's always easy to get to.
2. Never have to wait that long for a table.
3. They deliver for free over $20 (which is super easy when you're ordering sushi for two)
4. The orders are always ready faster than the estimate
5. The portions are very satisfying for the price.
It's not the best sushi I ever had but it's totally respectable and for that random Tuesday night sushi craving, it's the perfect thing to order in without breaking the bank. -

San Francisco, CA
The food is okay. Pretty much on par with the competitions food offerings.
The atmosphere is what threw me off. I was expecting to sit and relax while having some food, but the music was blasting all these pop cover songs. We could barely hear the waiters and ourselves speak without yelling. There was a group of like 15 younger white people looking like they were celebrating happy hour or getting out of school? Yelling in the air, "sake bomb" then boom, booooom, shot and cussing every other minute talking, "I'm wasted!!! AHHHH" It looked like everyone else in the restaurant kept on looking over there shoulder and saying WTF???!? I guess it comes with the atmosphere on this street on a Friday night. Bars flowing with these hipsters trying to party it up.
Parking is very difficult out here especially after 6pm. Be prepared to circle around or pony up some cash at the parking lot across the way. -

Seriously? My bad for not checking yelp first before patronizing this establishment...
The sushi isn't that bad but it is overpriced for what it is... I can't say anything was that bad in particular, but nothing stands out as fantastic either. Just bleh...
Or maybe it's because my experience there was tainted by this disturbing incident...
... We arrived just as happy hour was ending and seated ourselves. Just behind us was a couple clearly in the throws of a heated discussion. I, being ever so discreet ;), fully eavesdropped their convo, only to be absolutely horrified by douchelord threatening to KILL his lady friend AND her dog! WTF!? I nearly fell off my chair. Ok, Sushi Rock, why are you serving enough booze to your patrons to the point that they are homocidal??? scary... The way the staff was treating the couple, they were obviously regulars. Not a place I want to frequent! -
Review from Misha T.
Sushi rock needs to be commended on their selection in terms of sushi and other japanese foods from yosenabe to hamachi kama they make quite a bit. Unfortunately they don't seem to make it too well.
I ordered ten zaru soba and for something so basic the execution was pretty bad. My tempura tasted sort of mealy so it was either under-fried or the batter was bad. As for the soba, the tsuru was so diluted you could barely taste it.
They earn their extra star by having good service. -

I've been here a few times for lunch and last time I came here I ordered the lunch box for about $8 which is really cheap and you get to choose 3 different things. Well I like my California rolls to be crunch so the first time I went there i ordered the crunchy California roll out of 3 things and everything was fine. This time when I went and tried to order it again they said they cannot do that and that I would have to pay more in order for me to have it done crunchy.... well that's weird because last time they did it. And the gayoza was also done differently this time, it was deep fried too much. It was super crunchy instead of soft.
So I did not like my experience there. It's as if they change the way the same food is prepared every single time.
That's why I am only giving them 2 stars. -

This is what happens when you leave your phone at home and can't consult your trusty Yelp.
Don't. Come. Here.
Their fish did not look fresh and was absolutely disgusting. The Rainbow roll i ordered tasted bland, the fish was falling off the roll, the rice was not the standard that other sushi restaurants use, and everything just tasted terrible.
Service could've used a bit of help. Three waitresses, the restaurant wasn't packed and it still took awhile to get the check. -

Parking not bad. Small portions, great food. Decent atmosphere. Not much to say about this place, I only had the rolls which were good. I will go back again. The service was a little slow bringing the check, but fast with the food. That's a good thing if you're not in a hurry to get out (ie..get back to work).

We didn't have the sushi, but we did enjoy a bottle of sake during happy hour that was 50% off. The tempura was a little soggy, also.
I'd come here again for happy hour just to drink but probably not to eat.Listed in: My SF Hood

I have to give a small update. I went to the bar another night and had a beer with an uni shooter. Not uni and sake, I had to custom order this one. Uni with ponzu, quail egg, green onion, and a little tobiko. I was impressed, turns out they buy their uni from Santa Barbara. With how bismal this place is, I was pretty surprised. So whenever I want to blow down the best Uni and some drinks, I'll come here. Just remember their rice is horrible so don't get carried away with any nigiri :)

3 stars and a half.
There are definitely better sushi places in the city, but there are also much worse.
They open until 12.30am so that's also a plus.
Service is really nice and that's mainly what keeps me going back. -
Review from Tamara N.
I like this place because it forever endeared itself to me on my birthday a few years ago, when I had what is now referred to as "Pink Sushi". I forget the actual name of the roll, but it's basically a deep fried Philly roll that is wrapped in rice paper instead of seaweed. It was the first time I'd ever had anything like it, and I fell in love! (The rice paper was pink, in case you hadn't guessed that yet.) I downed a bottle of sake called Sayuri, which is light, creamy and unfiltered. It comes in a pale pink bottle and is absolutely delicious and my favorite sake these days.
Thus, Pink Sushi was born as a tradition in my life. -

I ordered Sushi Rock delivery thru Grubstub. The delivery actually came 15 minutes early which was about the only good thing about my experience. I ordered the chirashi entree, unagi sushi and the mackerel lightly salted. First, miso soup that came with the chirashi entree was horrible. It was very salty and had a "thick" taste to it. I've never had worse miso soup before. The Chirashi meal itself was just okay, the rice was very starchy and the pieces of fish were semi-fresh, maybe it had more to do with my order being delivered and the fish was on top of warm rice. They should actually separate the fish when they deliver.
The unagi sushi had was average, the rice was starchy and chunky. The unagi pieces themselves were average in size, however, I prefer sushi places that are generous with their fish.
The lightly salted mackerel was pretty good, for about $7 you get 5oz. of mack, its good with rice, but too bad their rice isn't good here.
I paid about $35 after delivery and tip, not a good bargain considering most of the food I ate wasn't good. I can tolerate average sushi places but I won't bother ordering from this place again. -

Ugh, I really don't like this place.
I came here a couple of years ago with my parents. Just a simple lunch with them.
The food isn't all that great and too pricey for crappy food. The service was somewhat okay. Needless to say, I'd rather go somewhere else. -

San Francisco, CA
The most redeeming quality about Sushi Rock is that it's an approximately ten second walk away from where I live. This means that I've only picked stuff up to bring home, never actually eaten in the restaurant. The wait after calling in an order or going in to order takeout has been about 20 minutes.
I had the curry chicken katsu a couple of times during a lapse in my pescatarianism (don't worry, I didn't cave just for that, I was also consuming more awesome things like steak during that period). It was pretty dry, but still edible.
Next up: tempura udon. DO NOT WANT. I looove tempura veggies, but these were so bleh that I didn't even finish them. The coating tasted a bit off and wasn't very crispy. As for the udon, I've definitely had significantly better elsewhere. I didn't care for the broth at all.
I'll probably be skipping over this for Nara Sushi in the future, even if it is slightly more expensive and slightly farther away. -

This place was decent, there was definitely no rockin' and rollin' going on here. I ordered a dinner box with chicken teriayke and cali rolls, no bueno.
My bf had a few good rolls though, nothing special. I had an iced tea and they gave soup and salad for free, neither was very good.
Our bill was about $40 and I really wasn't impressed. The service was actually pretty good though, very kind and attentive servers.
My recommendation: Go drink sake, it will make you notice the food less.Listed in: Me Likey Sushi

I have been to this Sushi Rock twice. The envirnment is great. Music playing in the background they have happy hour specials for drinks. The food is good. The salad and miso soup is tasty. The service is awesome. They are super friendly and attentive.
Food:The first time I had shrimp katsu the shrimps are sliced in halves and deep fried. The shrimp are kind of dry, but the katsu sauce helps. The second time that I went I ordered shrimp teriyaki. Alot better than the shrimp katsu. Lots of teriyaki sauce.
Overall, great place to eat out at late night. -
Review from Amanda W.
I have to say, first impressions make a lasting impression. Came to Sushi Rock on a GNO. First thing that happened after we came in and sat down was amazing. Before we even opened the menu, before we had the chance to look around for our server- we were all served a hot bowl of miso soup and a small dish of seaweed with cucumber. Never had that happen before and frankly, it is mighty impressive.
The girls and I ordered chicken sukiyaki, the mango roll, a caterpillar roll, a dragon roll, a large sake, soba and some other stuff. Not as much food as we would normally eat... but we were filled up by the time we left. The sukiyaki was tasty but very, very sweet. All the rolls were great but the caterpillar was the best.
The employees are attentive- very attentive. Sometimes someone would help us and a few minutes later we would be asked by someone else if we needed anything else. It was much appreciated!
Love the music... definitely something different than your usual sushi place. Glad I came here to try it out! -

At first I thought the best thing about this place was that they were open at 11:50pm when I was starving at a club down the street, but then I tried the Sushi and it was really good. It had a fun, laid back atmosphere too and was still packed at that hour. I could tell it would probably be even more fun in there around dinner time, but if you are in the City and get a late food craving, you have to stop by and check it out.

This place should be called "Sushi Crappy Pop Hip-hop RnB"! There is nothing "Rock" about this place other than the fake stucco "rock" on the wall behind the sushi bar. I've gone here a few times because it's close to my friends' place. Everything about this place is Average at best, which means the service = Blah, the food = Meh, and atmosphere = Gahgag! Some of the rolls aren't too bad, if you can decide on anything from the 10billion listed on their menu! The only reason I didn't give them a 1star is because you get free ice cream at the end of your meal! :P

One star only for the service and the hours of operation.
The sushi here was just not good. Taste and quality was not worth the price. We ordered a roll with baked salmon, yet the salmon was half cooked and half raw. The other roll we got tasted cheap and just disgusting. This is the worst tasting sushi I have ever tried, and I've had my share of good sushi. The sashimi was okay; not good, not horrible.
Save yourself some time and money and just go to a different place. Even though you'd be paying a couple dollars more per roll it is more worth it then to pay for the crappy sushi here. -

maybe 2.5 stars if yelp allowed half stars.
I've been here for lunch over the years. today there were no surprises.
the food is pretty average, nothing special or extraordinary. pretty okay for cheap-ish sushi. the lunch menu is probably the best option.
what got me is their current promotion where you get a frequent customer card, 8 stamps and you get a free lunch. in theory, that's fantastic business practice to hook in customers. however, they don't include the meal you JUST paid for.
If the establishment is too cheap to even do that, it's probably not a very good promotion. -
Review from Jenn B.
I've been here three times. I've never left satisfied, and I'm not talking about portions.
My most recent visit was this weekend, with three other friends. I insisted on a better rated Chinese place, but was outvoted. Blerg. I remembered that they give you free miso soup, cucumber salad and a tiny scoop of ice cream, so I figured that, in addition to the company, would make the meal enjoyable.
We all ordered different things- 3 rolls, a bento box, some sort of rice bowl, and fried tofu. I don't know what it is about the rolls, but they all taste really off. I think it's the rice. It looks like rice from grocery store sushi. You know, all smushed and flavorless. I didn't try my friend's teriyaki (included in the bento box), but she said she liked it. The fried tofu wasn't good at all. On another visit, I had the yellowtail carpaccio and after the first piece I refused to eat the others. The fish was not fresh.
Well, I still have a http://restaurant.com gift certificate for this place. I suppose I'll be back, but I won't be ordering anything with rice or fish. Does anybody feel like splitting $20 worth of teriyaki and ice cream with me?
