My fellow Yelper & I had a GREAT experience here... the sushi was super fresh and super delicious. I'm a nerd for 90s hits, so I say bring on the 90s theme and satellite radio station. What can be better than singing along to some TLC and eating a delicious Wallflowers roll? Does life get any better than this?

There was a wait for a table, but it was worth it... The service was prompt & friendly, the beer cold, the rolls tasty. Definitely just as good as anything I've had in Chicago (ok, fine... the midwest isn't exactly the mecca of fresh fish, but still)... and next time I find myself strolling down Las Olas, I'll be in.

Every time I have a visitor in town, I bring him/her to Sushi Rock. Sushi "Rock" actually ROCKS!

Where else can one gobble up their "hosomaki combo" (my favorite meal on the menu) slam their saki, and hear Billy Idol's ROCK THE CRADLE OF LOVE?

Many locals eat here. The staff know me by name and I always run into a neigbor. The tourists (thank goodness) are too lazy to walk this far down Las Olas.

The food is always wonderful and fresh.  The crowd is hip. The space is small and it is lit by black lights. It is by far the best sushi restaurant in Fort Lauderdale.

I have been so Sushi Rock so many times I was almost shocked when I realized I had never Yelped.

Sushi Rock is in the heart of Las Olas Blvd. The menu is large and has traditional and non traditional rolls, but as large as it is, I don't even have to look at the menu any more, which may inhibit my menu growth but I just cannot part from my favorite roll: The Tarantula (crispy crap, apple chunks (yes the fruit), spicy mayo, other tasty treats.
The service is great and the staff is friendly.

Some other great rolls include - Fugee (on the starter menu - cucumber roll with salmon, crab, and cream cheese in a ponzu sauce), the Sexy Roll, Volcano, and so many more.

And you'll have a fun time with names such as Milli Vinilli, Strawberry Fields, Elvis, Madona, and more.

They don't take reservations so if you go during prime hours, you will probably have to wait a bit.

Don't forget the Sake!

I really wanted to love this place.  The music and the staff here were really great but the sushi was not good.  I have had much better sushi other places including the midwest and I expect a lot more when I can see the ocean on my drive to and from the restaurant.  Cool place though.

Oh Fort Lauderdale you are a sad sad sad place.

OUT OF TOWNERS READ MY REVIEW!

If you think PF Chang's is the best Chinese food in the world don't read this review.

But, if you think no matter what you do to a Chrysler 300 it still looks like a Chrysler 300 then continue reading...

Having just spent a week in Key West enjoying the Sun, Alcohol, and Wickedness that is Key West, we were looking for a great restaurant to cap off our vacation.  With yelp as my trusty food guide we picked Sushi Rock as many have quoted "the best sushi place in south florida".  Even the valet kid at our hotel said it was awesome.

Thinking we would have a great meal we went...

If you like real Sushi then this place just flat out blows!

We started our meal with the Usuzukhuri.

How can you get crappy tuna when the gulf stream is 30 minutes off the coast of Florida?  The fish was completely the wrong temperature, meaning it was tepid like a melting pad of butter, and the fish tasted like it marinated in some other dying fish.

For our meals we ordered a combination meal with sushi, california roll, and steak teriyaki.  The teriyaki was like beef jerky, drenched in so much sauce that it was like a gooey teriyaki sauce soup.

We also ordered a couple of the restaurants "signature rolls", can you say WTF?  We ordered  the Big Bopper, the Michael Jackson, and the Crazy Roll.

The Big Bopper and the MJ are completely indistinguishable when it gets in your mouth.  MJ has cream cheese in it which in this particular application acts like a paste that melds all the other crap in the roll together creating one big messy taste of cream cheese gone bad.  At the same time the Big Bopper which is supposed to have BBQ eel and caviar in it again becomes completely indistinguishable once it's in your mouth.  In fact if you put the two rolls in your mouth with your eyes closed you would think you are eating the same gooey pile of mush.

We ended up spending $100+, I was at first shocked, then in awe, then feeling I had been violated, and then just bitter.  I have no qualms about paying for good food, but this my friends is a waste, and if this is an indication of what is considered really good food in Fort Lauderdale you are better off eating at TGI Fridays, or Subway because at least at those places you know what to expect.

I would probably give this a two and half stars but I feel this joint needs to be brought down to earth because the line of people that we saw after us is clearly unwarranted.

Hey Fort Lauaderdale you all wouldn't know good Sushi if it jumped out of the gulf stream committed hari kari or seppuku and laid pieces of it in your open mouth, and then said "Sir, I am sorry for having taken so long to die as I am only 2 minutes fresh.".

I've been wanting to eat at this place for awhile, ever since a good friend of mine said it was his favorite sushi place in Ft Lauderdale. I finally got my opportunity last night. We arrived early, around 5:30 pm, so the place was almost empty. Good thing we did, because by the time we finished eating, around 7, the place was packed and people were waiting outside for a table.

We had a group of 4, so I got to try a lot of things: Garden salad ($3), Tuna tataki appetizer ($10), Hamachi Kama ($12, "salted & grilled pacific yellowtail collarbone"...my friend ordered this and I had a few bites, the fish was perfectly cooked, moist and flavorful), and I sipped on a couple of Kirin Light beers, which were surprisingly only $5 each. For sushi, I had the reggae roll ($6), which is salmon, conch, scallions and spicy mayo. I also had the La Bamba roll ($11): shrimp tempura, scallions, lettuce and spicy mayo. That was fantastic. I had a piece of another roll that I can't remember.

Everything we had was outstanding. They had some really interesting and unique-sounding sushi rolls that I want to try next time, but I wasn't too adventurous given it was my first time visiting. Next time I'm going to get a couple of the signature rolls. Service was decent, good when we first got there but they kind of ignored us once the place filled up. Not too pricy for sushi, I think our bill was $130-something for 4 people and each of us had 2 or 3 alcoholic beverages. I will hopefully be back soon!

I've been here twice, first with my boss who frequents this place and a second time with a co-worker. This place rocks!

We went with things that had a bit of a kick... The shumai with wasabi had an amazing kick, meaning... if you dont like lots of wasabi - DO NOT ORDER. You dont notice the heat until you've bit into the dumpling and its too late. But.. if you are like me and think love is painful (i.e. running nose and tears), this is for you.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers roll, in comparison, is not as hot. It has Rooster sauce on top with a hint of jalapeno, but not enough to make you cry while dining.

They pipe in XM 90s music which made like this place even more.

This place gets packed quickly, so expect to wait. But its well worth it.

Nom nom nom!!!

There are so many great reviews about this restaurant that I hate to be a sour note.  Conversely, prefer sour things to the sugar that goes along with a sugar coating.  I have passed by this restaurant so many times that I cannot count.  It is a little hole in the wall that we decided to try for lunch before patronizing for dinner.  There is nothing spectacular about the outside and nothing really spectacular about the inside.  It is a modified shot-gun configuration on the interior with the break in circulation being the hostess stand.

The hostess and servers are quite blunt.  Don't confuse blunt with mean or vicious.  They get to the point and they move on.  I like that.  Upon entering we were seated at the front-corner booth and handed our menus.  Looking through the menu I was happy to see a good variety of food; but, looking at the name of the restaurant I was somewhat let down at the lack of variety of sushi.  When I look for sushi, I always look for flavors that are clean and crisp -- very rarely will I ever order anything that has more than 3 or 4 flavors or textures present since it tends to overwhelm the palate to the point that the meal becomes unenjoyable.  Keeping that in mind, I didn't stray to far from the section of simple sushi and sashimi.  When the waitress returned with our waters, we ordered:

Udon soup with Shrimp Tempura
Steamed Gyoza
Tekka Maki -- Cut Roll
Chicken Teriyaki with white rice and vegetables

The steamed gyoza arrived fairly quickly to the table and were presented in an aesthetically pleasing manner.  The plate incorporated the vessel for the gyoza dipping sauce.  While the dumplings by themselves were somewhat sticky and glutinous, when eaten in conjunction with the dipping sauce the flavor was wonderful.  The gyoza dipping sauce was the highlight of this appetizer with a very strong acidic nature and just a hint of piquancy.  It made my tastebuds dance.  Had the gyoza come without the sauce, I may not have finished them.

I am a huge fan of Udon soup.  There is just something about the thick noodle coupled with the simple broth that I thoroughly enjoy.  This simple soup came with carrots and mushrooms in the broth and a piece of shrimp tempura to the side.  I went straight for my chopsticks and spoon and started to eat the udon with the broth.  It was good.  I do prefer the udon soup at Matsuri in Miami, but this soup was good.  The carrots in the soup were in of additional cooking.  The were hard and not very flavorful due to the lack of attention.  The shrimp tempura was breaded in panko and fried - like all tempura.  It was light and had a good flavor, but it also had a slight oily after-taste that is indicative of the oil not being hot enough or the shrimp have sat for a bit too long.  As I was halfway through the udon soup, the chicken teriyaki and the tuna roll arrived.

First thing I always do is go for the rice in the chicken teriyaki; if I don't get to it soon enough, it has soy sauce on it.  The rice didn't taste like the Japanese short grain rice that I had been expecting, but instead like the common rice that you get throughout the US.  It didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste authentic nor have the same texture that I have grown to love.  I skipped back to my soup and then went for a piece of the sushi.  Trying it as it comes (no extra sauces or condiments) I found that the flavor was average.  I do remember from the menu that they do server toro (fatty tuna), but I wanted to see what they serve as their normal grade tuna.  Many people don't realize, but there are several different grades of tuna that come from different parts of the tunas body.  The most prize portion of the fish is the fatty tuna which comes from the lower section of the filet.  It tends to have a greater marblization of fat and melts in your mouth.  This tuna wasn't the lowest grade, but it was below mid-grade quality.

I moved back to the chicken teriyaki and was not amazed by the flavor at all.  It wasn't uber-sweet like so many poor teriyakis that I have recently tasted, but the chicken tasted like it was cooked at some point in the past and that it had been reheated, but and then placed on the plate with the sauce spooned over it.  There was no integration of flavor and the flavors didn't mix well in your mouth like a good deconstruction would.  To top it off, the chicken was somewhat dry.

Did I mention that I was enjoying the udon soup?  I went back to my soup and removed the rest of the carrots and ate the rest of my tuna roll in between eating the soup.  My friend said that he enjoyed the chicken and that he would order it again.

I will return to this restaurant at some point, but I will be wary.  There is no lunch menu that I have see, so you are paying dinner prices at all times.  I don't know that Sushi Rock Cafe really warrants the prices that it charges for its food during lunch time.  That may be the premium you pay for not waiting for dinner.

Yummy and Fresh!

Tiny little place and dark. Great sushi. I tried it again for a third time and I have been very pleased each time. Priced fairly. No fishy tasting sushi so I am a huge fan as most places in SoFlo can't seem to get it right.

This is, to date, my favorite sushi joint in the country.  A lot of people ask me why, and truthfully, you can get similar tasting sushi in a lot of places.  Basic sushi is really just a function of the quality of fish used.  But the creative dishes, now there's where a sushi restaurant stands out for me.  I like when sushi chefs get crazy up in the kitchen and start mixing fruit, starches, cheeses, sauces, and other non-traditional ingredients with their fish.

That said, this place hits the spot.  My favorite roll is the Monkees one with the banana tempura.  Banana and fish?  Really?  Yes.  This is the money dish.  They've also got a cool one with strawberries and their lobster roll is outstanding too.

The ambiance is cool too, with random tidbits of rock and roll history, and the staff has always been really friendly.  Anytime I'm back in town or am asked for a recommendation by a friend, this is where I send them.

My first time here and there are good review from yelpers that I wanted to try.  I have to have quality of food and service must match in order to get my wonderful dining experience.  Unfortunately,  I had bad experience.

The food was good, I don't have any problems except sushi rice was a bit harder than normal.  I like Big Bopper.  The volume of fish made me happy and the chef special sauce even taste better.  (i don't like fried food but this is exception).  This was good side and bad side was I got bad service experience.  All servers were getting together talking so loud some language( not Japanese I know), not paying attention our table.  Once came to take order, I wasn't sure server understand our order because of language skills, and didn't tell me anything that we ordered too much food and ended up wasted so food.  I wish server mentioned all rolls were big.    Ended up spent $100++, still rushing us to pay and leave NOW

I wasn't present the service overall, even I enjoyed food.

I am surprised on the positive reviews on this place. everything from the spring rolls to the last roll had a funny and unfresh taste. my boyfriend liked this place a lot better, but in terms of sushi, the smell and the decor made me feel a little queasy. the gyoza was decent, but have had better. additionally the service was not particularly good, where it was hard to find them.  I would not recommend going here.

Sushi Rock is still the best place for Sushi in Lauderdale. I went there last week and the fish was very fresh, wait staff attentive along with a fun environment makes for a really good meal. The place can get a little noisy so don't expect a quiet dinner.

Yea, thou I walk through the valley of sushi-emptiness, aka- south Florida;
I shall fear no wannabe;
for Sushi Rock is located at 1515 E Las Olas Blvd;
your tempura and spicy tuna rolls;
they comfort me.

Listen not to the faithless that speak of the death of sushi in Florida!  Behold, I have found a place where sushi lives and tempura is fresh!  A place frequented by Japanese who speak, *gasp*, Japanese!!

Seriously, this place beats any I've tried for sushi, hands down.  It really is a miracle of god to find a decent sushi place here in Florida.  This is coming from someone who use to have sushi five or six times a week, so trust me when I say that this place is amazing.

The restaurant may not be impressive, but boy do they know real authentic Japanese.  They even Yakiniku, for those sushi haters out there.

Will not disappoint.  But then again, how can you be disappointed when you have sake??

Sushi Rock is one of my original favorite restaurants, and it has the notable distinction of being the first place I ever tried real sushi.

Food:
Hardly anyone can complain about Sushi Rock's food, as you can tell from all those reviews below. When it comes to making maki and slicing sashimi, Sushi Rock is one of my number ones. But seriously, alliteration aside, this place makes some damn good sushi, and just read through my reviews, you'll see I eat a lot of it.

One of my ultimate favorites is the Volcano Roll, it's a cucumber and cream cheese roll topped with chopped conch, spicy mayo and roe. I can eat this roll everyday, all day, along with the spicy tuna temaki. Each roll is made compactly and firmly, no crumbling in your soy sauce here. And in addition to the names, the rolls are creative beyond belief. Definitely not your traditional sushi restaurant, all Sushi Rock needs is a big name attached to it and it'd be a world-known restaurant.

For those a little more local, Sushi Rock is still an institution as Jay A. says. Try the Rock and Roll, a specialty lobster makimono that's served with full tail. Also, I recommend the usuzukuri or chirashi for some fantastically fresh fish. If you're feeling daring and sitting at the bar, try asking for some of the chefs' personal creations as well, they might just surprise you with something new! But really you can't go wrong, I'm partial to the chicken harumaki and edamame, as well as the sushi appetizer. But be adventurous, because everything's great, even the non-sushi dishes.

Venue:
I have been going to Sushi Rock since, no joke, the first week it opened. There are pictures on the wall, and if you look close enough, there's a girl in a white shirt with colorful dolphins on it, sitting with her parents. It's still there, and they still know me. Mr Luke, the owner is a real sweetie, and a few of the waitresses are still there. I even when to karate and high school with one of their sons. So, it's my place, I'm a regular, a local.

But that was a few years ago, and although they still remember me, I sometimes miss their old decor. It wasn't quite as dark, and the blacklights were accents, not the main source. Records hung from the ceiling, and the place seemed to sit more. 10 years later they still have the same pufferfish hanging over the bar, and some of the same records taped to the wall. The room's a little darker now, and the poster in the bathroom hallway have finally been upgraded, but it's the same Sushi Rock, and it's still crowded.

Go early or later to avoid the rush, and make sure to get some sushi. Try and get the booth right behind the hostess stand, as it's the most spacious. And don't forget to get some sake and share a glass with Mr Luke, he may be Thai, but he and his crew know his sushi!

Very good sushi and quite a menu with some unique creations. The prices weren't bad for Las Olas, but a little on the high side for my taste. The Sake was good and the Sake Bombs even better. A little too cramped and pretty crowded on a weekend night. The staff are some of the friendliest servers I've seen in South Florida. Kind of a hole-in-the-wall but great food. Also, the pieces of sushi were a little too big, which makes getting all in one bite a challenge.

One of the better sushi places we've been to. Everything we tried was fabulous. Prices weren't bad. Sake was good. All their items are named after music groups/artists or songs. It was a late lunch, the Las Olas crowd hadn't yet picked up except for the 'early-bird, older-age Florida-diners' and sushi sounded great.

But when we saw the outside of Sushi Rock Cafe, it didn't look too enticing and we were quite skeptical.... but that's when YELP kicked in and the cool "Yelp-reviewed" red dot on the front door gave us the confidence to go in.

And Boy! was it worth it. The sushi was fresh and we loved the original flavors and rolls.  It's a perfect place for sushi-lovers-bored-with-the-same-sushi-orders.

I rarely give 5s, and this place takes it!

Everything is so fresh here. the rice, the fish. you can feel the juices in your mouth! its really breath taking. Milli vanilli, and rainbow are great.

3 rolls of each is enough to fill 2 people up. they are a good size.

1 cali roll, 1 rainbow, 1 milli vanilli and just water came to 32 bux. so its not expensive either. that fills up 2 ppl nicely.

Wow!  Get the Sushi Rock roll!  So much fish packed into a roll, and it tasted sooooo good!

This place definitely does not skimp out on the quantities of fish in each roll.  With all the fun names and creative combinations of ingredients, it's hard to narrow down your picks.  We went with Sushi Rock, Finn, Unagi, and the soft-shell crab roll (forgot the name), and started out with the Vegetarian Miso Eggplant.  We managed to finish only a little more than half of the sushi since there was so much food.  The b/f kept raving about how good the sushi was, even until the next day.

We'll definitely be back if we're in the area again!

Okay, so this is probably the best place for sushi in the Fort Lauderdale area.  There are many creative rolls that actually work (eel & strawberry & green apple, yum).  The ingredients are fresh, but the rolls are huge...so order less than you think you can eat, because it does not keep in your to-go boxes.  :)

That being said, I think I actually might prefer Wasabi Cafe's sushi on a more authentic level.  Sushi Rock is imaginative and fun and very fresh -- but it's always a pain because it's ridiculously crowded.  For Fort Lauderdale, it's a solid 4 to 4.5, but compared to all the sushi places I've been to, it's closer to a 3.  I'll give it somewhere in between -- a 3.75.

Sushi Rock is a cool, local place.  It's nice to get away from the touristy bs that plagues some parts of Ft. Lauderdale and feel out the real restaurants people who live in the area dig.  I tried the Red Hot Chili Peppers roll, which was too hot for my taste and honestly I couldn't have more than one piece (but that's just my palate, if you go for spicy stuff, this roll's for you).  I also ordered Tarantula which was filled with yummy soft shell crab, and octopus salad.  The food here is fresh and the menu inventive.  This is a must-try in Flo Rida!

I found this place on yelp prior to going on vacation last month. Boy am I glad! It is the BEST sushi I have ever had in my life thus far. I got the "wallflower" and the presentation was amazing and the conch was cooked perfectly! The service was fabulous. I loved the names of the sushi on the menu and there were so many rolls I wanted to try but definitely didn't have enough room. If I ever go back to Ft. Sushi Rock is an institution on Las Olas.  Mostly it's fantastic.  As with all sushi, there can be an off day.  This place is fun, clean and well run.  It is a family business that has been around for a long time.  A local favorite worth a try!  We've been gong for years and love it.  Much better to eat in than to order delivery as the food tastes much better if you eat immediately.

The Sushi Rock Cafe has great sushi that is always fresh.  I like Sushi Rock but most of the time its a bit packed and they really need to get a bigger and better location maybe something with a full bar.  Its often too loud to think in there.

The prices are good and the sushi is quite good. One of the better places I've been to. The fish is fresh and the rice taste GOOD, The only thing is that place is small and it can get crowded. I would definitely go there again cuz I luv me some sushi. They have uni and it was so yummy. Man, now i want some uni, maybe I"ll have to go there this week. Oh no. I shouldn't talk about food or I"ll want to eat.

Sushi Rock had incredible rolls, with creative combinations and distinctive names ("The Pink Floyd" or "The Big Bopper"). Very fresh fish and all around the meal was great. If you're in Fort Lauderdale and like Sushi, this place should be on your list!

Service leaved a little bit to be desired - the check was pretty much thrown on the table without a word at the end of the meal. Music is great, but only if you like techno a little on the loud side. Dessert as well (the bananarama) was a little bland. All and all pretty minor stuff.

Overall, a great place for sushi - food was excellent, so much that it makes you overlook some of the smaller issues. If you're in Fort Lauderdale - go here!

The ambiance is not at all expected for the sushi place, and actually off-putting.  The owner and waitresses are Thai, which is also unexpected.  Despite this, the sushi is tasty and fresh.  Don't bother with the cooked food.  Minus 1 star for the so-so service and the gimmicky theme.   Your sushi is excellent, why dilute it with poor lighting and loud music?

Sushi Rock is the best sushi in Fort Lauderdale, and maybe even south Florida.  Typically fresh fish.  The spicy tuna is not that great, but their salmon sashimi is awesome.  Try the Pink Floyd roll!  Show up early or late, because it gets packed.

This place is simply the sushi bomb! I really like the selection, quality of the sushi, and the informality of the restaurant. It is a consistent winner and I am all about sushi success! It took some time to find this spot, but I now can't find a place that tops sushi rock in the 954.
