I was able to sneak in here at 8:00 p.m. on a Saturday night to snag a seat at the bar. Had a gift card that was expiring and it had been several years since I had been to this place.

It was quite busy but I had excellent and attentive service from my server Nicole! I had the "Double Miso" soup (not sure why they call it that), wakame salad, a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and 4 orders of nigiri sushi (salmon, scallop, tuna, and yellowtail). All the fish tasted fresh and the serving size of the fish was good. The nigiri was on the pricey side though ($8 each). With a glass of wine, my total came to $50.

All in all, I enjoyed everything and will make a note to return! They have an extensive drink menu, lots of interesting appetizers, and good sushi. I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews, but I would recommend this place if you are craving sushi in Mammoth :)

This was the only restaurant open at 9pm for our late dinner when we were in Mammoth. Although there weren't many people in the restaurant, it took a good 10 mins to just seat us.

The ramen was super expensive here costing an arm and 18$. Coming from Orange County, this is ridiculous! I did enjoy the pork belly and the mushroom which were both well seasoned but the broth was average and so were the noodles.

Also had a spicy salmon hand roll for happy hour price of 4$ which was not bad. Sushi quality tasted relatively fresh IMO.

Ordered the fire edamame which was coated with a sweet chili sauce. I enjoyed that. Anything with sweet chili is good.

Also had ONE scoop of green tea ice cream for a whooping 5$. I just couldn't believe it. Overall, had an average experience.

It's small, pretty casual, located in the village. Good service. The best menu item is fried Oreos with ice cream. The pork ramen was not impressive - the pork disc was kind of rubbery, it was quite spicy. Sushi was pretty good. It's pretty expensive for what it is.

In my opinion this is one of the best sushi spots in Mammoth. It's my go to. Asian-Fusion sushi at its best! I always grab dinner here at least once when I'm in the village. I love the beverage options: chia teas and draft brews. IPA all day!

I pushed my stroller through the snow to get to this place a few weeks ago, literally. The wait was about 30 minutes but worth every minute. We were sat at a booth which helped to accommodate my stroller. The hostess was kind and helpful.

The spicy edamame was bomb! The texture and flavor were on point. Im an edamame freak, so I was stoked. Some joints over cook and it ends up tasting like saw dust. Not Shushi Rei.

The wifey is a big fan of the sashimi. I love the Scotty's and the Dave's specialty rolls. If your feeling saucy give the Climax a try! Hell, try them all!

Give this place a go. I know you'll walk away with a full belly and a smile on your face!

They need to be more efficient with clearing their tables. I saw multiple tables before and during my dinner that sat idle that could have been opened up for new guests sooner. There's definitely business being lost because of the wasteful seating. In addition to the uncleared tables, there were multiple bar seats open. I can respect that this place might not be trying to be a turn-and-burn joint but they can definitely step it up.

Food-wise, what we got was mostly okay. Shrimp tempura batter was heavy and soaked up lots of grease. Pork ramen had strong flavors but solid ingredients. The rice for their sushi rolls was cold and gummy. Glasses were stained, chipped and sticky. I know we're land-locked and most of the fish we eat would be frozen anyway, but we stuck with cooked dishes. I'll update as needed if there's any gastrointestinal distress.

The redeeming factor was the friendliness of the staff. Service was a little slow and we were given the wrong check but somehow they managed to stay cheerful. I'd have gone with 3 stars overall but the incorrect check was the straw that broke the camel's back.

If you are considering to eat here, please read the other reviews. Customer service needs improvements. I think the restaurant needs more waiters/ waitresses. The yakisoba was good, but definitely NOT worth the price tag. Pork ramen was mediocre, seems like they use soysauce and water for the broth, also not worth the price. Bottom line is, this isn't an authentic Japanese restaurant if that's what you're craving.

Easily the best Japanese food in mammoth lakes. I can only speak for the sushi and ramen, but we've been here several times when my partner and I have a cravings for Japanese food and we've always left pleasantly satisfied. Good sushi, good ramen and good service. We've both been to japan and have eaten the finest of ramens and although the ramen at this place is not at that caliber, the pork ramen here is actually very very flavorful and not disappointing at all. All the sushi we've gotten has been fresh and very well cut.

We think all the negative and critical reviews of this place are probably from the snobby LA weekend crowd that Invades mammmoth Friday-Sunday.

Salmon. The perfect salmon skin crisp.
      Pork ramen! Super flavorful.

It looked great, busy, then came the wait. Being told 20 minutes when there are 12 seats at the sushi bar, and 5 tables prepped and ready to go. Asking the greeter/hostess if we could see the manager to ask a question, out comes the attitude. She replied with you'll have to wait. I grabbed a waiter asked for the manager and saw her immediately. She was gracious and positive. Asking why such a wait with so many seats available? She states the kitchen can not take all the orders so we stagger. I can not understand why have the tables available, the seating at the sushi bars if your kitchen can not handle the customers? Food was good. Tasted fresh.
Clearly not in it for profit and I would like to think that they have the customers best interest in mind.

When it comes to dead fish every star in my reviews must be earned. Sushi Rei is A-OK and I mean that in an honest way. The staff was very warm and receptive on a warm, to early in the year spring day when the mountain was all but melted.
