Just came back last night from Reno, and I can't wait to go back - so I can eat at Sushi Pier again!

After reading a few Yelpers' suggestions to sit at the bar, my boyfriend and I wanted to do just that Sat night. The wait staff was quick to clean up, and led us to the bar. Once we were seated, we started with some nigiri. Then, began asking our sushi chef (i think his name was Mark) what we must have.

I think Johnny overheard, and made us a spicy special roll. Mark kept recommending and making us yummy rolls and nigiri. Then, he made us 2 pieces of "Mickey Mouse" (lol). We had quail shooters at Sushi Moto before, and we prefer how it's served here.

Sitting at the bar really made the dinner more fun. It was a great experience. Thanks for the tip, fellow Yelpers!

What can I say, I am new to Reno and I had serious doubts about the quality of sushi (especially all-you-can-eat sushi) available out here.  BUT, Sushi Pier 1 put my doubts to rest.  Here is the secret (now, pay attention!):

Sit at the bar and ask Johnny to make you whatever he wants.

Seriously, the man is a genius.  The couple next to us were from S.F. (also Yelpers) and they told us to try the quail shooters.  Next thing I know, I am slamming down a shot glass full of raw quail egg, apple cider vinegar, spices and secret sauce.  Wild!  EVERYTHING we had was stellar!  Plus, most people in there are regulars, so it is a pretty fun environment.  Loved the place and will be back again!

Sushi...in NEVADA?! No wai. I'm not looking for a fast track to losing weight through involuntary vomiting due to food poisoning. Well, not right this second.

Thankfully, my naivete was cured when my boyfriend refused to let me leave Reno without having sushi. I'm from San Francisco, we get our food practically right next to the restaurant, how was it supposed to compete with that?

Well, not only does it thoroughly pass, it's amazing. Melt-in-your-mouth maguro, hamachi, scallops, albacore, uni, good Lord. It's better than most of the sushi I've had in San Francisco, and it's ALL YOU CAN EAT. Stuff your face, leave unbuckling your belt and extremely uncomfortable all-you-can-eat. Our sushi chef kept making us random rolls, which were delicious. The only downside is that I believe they use imitation crab--but you couldn't even tell by the taste. If someone at the restaurant tells me otherwise, then I'll change it to 5 stars. It was THAT good.

A meal that was worth easily 150 dollars in San Francisco cost us 40, INCLUDING a large sake for the two of us. And they give you an orange with strawberries, all cut up nicely like you're in tropical paradise having a coconut piña colada on the beach. Next time I'm in Reno, I'm going to beg him to take me here again (I'm sure he'll oblige without too much fuss :)

Word to the wise; stick to the nigiri, the rolls with cream cheese taste like you're eating a block of deep fried cream cheese. I mean, it sounds delicious, and it is because I've done it, but you have no more room to eat the rest of your meal and that would make you a sad, bloated panda.

Reno -- home of the AYCE sushi bars. I looked and looked and looked for a traditional sushi place. Nada. Nothing. The chefs are typically a mix of Koreans, Chinese, and Latinos. They might have yellowtail, or albacore, or tuna on the menu, but this is Reno fish we are talking about.

What does that mean? Over sauced, garnished with tons of onions and sesame seed nigiri. Unreal. I asked the chef why he masks the flavor iike that, and he gave me some bogus "that's how we roll" answer. That was a rhetorical question buddy.

Everyone else was happy gorging themselves on gigantic rolls. Me, I was happy drinking two large sapporos.

This is our face sushi spot - hard to believe that we have to go all the waaaaaay to Reno, Nevada for sushi - but it is worth the drive! We have been going here for a few years now (we actually contemplate heading for a weekend drive to get our sushi fix) - you can't beat the price, service and all around sushi-goodness. We always do the all you can eat of course!

Our fave sushi chef is corbin - we take a seat and he already starts rolling without us saying a word - our faves: fresh scallop hand rolls (spicy); hamachi nigiri; striped bass nigiri and saba nigiri. they use a special vinegar mix on the striped bass and saba that is off the hook! yummmm...

it can get crowded - however, there are more than one location - but this one is our fave. mostly locals and sushi lovers. all you can eat sushi for a great price? you cannot beat it! would give them extra stars if it was possible...

All-You-Can-Eat Sushi!... What was I thinking?...
The sushi menu is extensive.  The long rolls are super long.  The nigiri was very well portioned.  The sushi guy kept on asking me what else I wanted to try.

All I can say is that I was defeated at the end of the night.

The service sucks if it get to busy. It took 15 min to get my water and I would have loved to order another beer if they would have even noticed that I was still in the restaurant.

My Hubby ordered all u can eat & I ordered veggie tempura(cames with rice, cabbage salad, miso soup & beans). I'm not a big fan of sushi only because the rice makes me so full. I would've ordered all you can eat, if they included sashimi on the menu. =) I liked the veggie tempura dinner - crispy & fresh. Yummy cabbage salad. Portion's big so I could not finish. My Hubby loved the food but he was so full after his second order of sushi dish so he didn't get the chance to order a lot. Believe me he can eat a lot! But sushi is just something that you cannot eat so much. If you made sushi or maki at home, you would know how much rice you would use to roll. Sooo much!

Good food. One thing I loved was their high chair transformation for my baby who hates high chair, actually sat there for the whole time. The waiter put high chair over the bar stool. Cool idea!

AYCE.

Say it with me.

AYCE!

Say like this: Ay-ssssssss

All You Can Eat. SUSHI!!! You'd never think that all you can eat sushi would be fantastic (think typical boring buffet when you hear it, right?) but step into this quaint little joint... and boy-oh-boy those misconceptions of what all you can eat usually is get left at the door. Everything on the menu is FANTASTIC! I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed the Morrison Roll. In fact, I had two! So delicious, YOU HAVE TO ORDER IT!

Man, I wish I went to Reno more often so I could eat here, this would definitely be a regular dining spot, despite the $18 price tag. I will definitely return here someday.

First time that I had sushi in Reno, it was here. We went at lunch time, and it wasn't too crowded, thank god cuz we were STARVING! :P We ordered the AYCE $18 per person, and one thing to remember people: They charge you for the sushi tat you order but DO NOT EAT. So remember to only order what you think that you can handle, because you can always order *more* if you need to. So, armed with this knowledge, we ordered a buttload of sushi, and a couple of handrolls as well, and it was friggin' BOMB. I'm actually drooling as I think about this....not really, but still. It's that good.

All in all a great informal place to grab lunch, the room is a little small so if you get claustraphobic then don't go....
I'll probably end up going to Sushi Pier 2 more often than 1, but go to either- You'll be totally stuffed and satisfied.

My favorite restaurant in Reno!!  My boyfriend and I come here at least once a week!  If you go often enough, the sushi chefs will just start making the foods you like without even having to ask for it.  Go later in the evening as this place gets PACKED around dinner time.  Sit at the bar, mingle with the awesome chefs, and eat delicious sushi until you cannot breathe!

My standard order includes:
Salmon, Yellowtail, and Seared Tuna Nigiri
Joey Ramone Handroll
Anything else the chefs offer!

This place is small, but service was great! The sushi buffet was great too! Of course, you can always pay a lot more for better sushi, but for the price, the quality here ranks at least B+, which is very high for buffets.

HOLY EFF!!!!!

This restaurant is one of my customers, so I was happy to return the business at the recommendation of a coworker.

I'm usually skeptical when it comes to AYCE joints, but the quality of the fish here is PHENOMENAL.

My coworker has a great relationship with the owners, and is on a first-name basis with the family.  You can tell they take personal interest in everyone who walks through the door.

Now, on to the food.  Out of this world.  We didn't even have to order anything.  Gorgeous, intricate creations kept appearing before us, like they were reading our minds.  The fish melted in my mouth and the flavors and textures were perfectly balanced, no condiments needed.  Over the course of lunch I devoured, among other things, crystal shrimp, spicy tuna, seared ahi, jalapenos, paper-thin lemon slices and salmon skin.  $13.95??  Now, that's a steal.

Though I normally try to avoid visiting the same place twice when I travel (since there are a bazillion places yet to try), I'm positive I'll break my own rule and head back soon.  I'd be retarded not to.

One night, we ventured looking for this place after a glorious ski day, which meant we were starving, and for an $18 all you can eat sushi dinner, even though I knew it wasn't going to be traditional or anything, I was all over it.  A little hidden, and to make matters worse, their lighted signage out front was "out" the night we went, and in an already dark, vacant retail area, it became invisible.  I had to call to reinsure my location, and a small neon Kirin sign was my beacon to our grubfest.

Very small place for an all-you-can eat.  Maybe 4 tables and a horseshoe sushi bar area.  Cool crowd though, very young and party friendly.  There's enough sushi "chefs" and I use that term loosely, as most of them seemed like college students, trying to earn a buck, but we luckily seated in front of the main guy who was older and had some decent skills.  Nice cuts and rice formed and rolled well.

Like I said, DO NOT expect anything traditional here, but the quality is ok, and you will leave stuffed.  I did an almost complete sampler of nigiris, maybe a totaling of 12, just to gauge what was good around here.  I guess my only gripe, is that they tend to sauce a lot of things, whether with some teriyaki glaze or some dots of Sriacha hot sauce (cock sauce).  I tend to gravitate towards nigiris for their simplicity, but I simply was not going to get that here.  Since I was already in non-traditional mode, I opted to end with one of their "Long" rolls, which mine had something like hamachi, salmon skin, avocado and tobiko.  These "long" rolls are deceivingly huge, as they aren't so thick, but when it arrives, it is cut into at least 10 pieces.  Though decent, I struggled to eat the last few bites, next time these will get shared.

Though not mind-blowing sushi, but if your expectations are in check, this place can stuff the f*&% outa ya, in a fun, cool social setting.  Will I return?  After another glorious ski day, you betcha!

My belly expanded half and inch and I got my money's worth :)  I rarely get to eat at all you can eat - especially sushi.  I contemplated the decision with all my might and came to the conclusion HELL YEAH! lets do it!

Sushi was what you expect for an all you can eat joint, but I would definitely come back if i am in town.  The hard part was trying to eat $18 worth of sushi to comensate for the price.  To being with also, I really didn't bring my mantepite.  Next time I will be more up to the challenge.

All and all I would recommend this place if you are up for some sushi and in Reno.

Grabbed some sushi here when I was heading out on a plane.  It was OK (what you would expect from an all you can eat sushi joint), the sushi chefs nice and the service fairly speedy.  I recommend the place to people leaving from the Reno airport, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go.

Ladies and gentlemen get your stomachs ready for this place. Do your tummy stretches and studying up on Kobayashi and his beastly eating prowess. Everyone this is a truly all you can eat experience.

Sure sure, all you can eat == nastiness, but not so in this case. You walk in and are greeted by a nicely and grumpy group of people waiting for a seat. The waitresses are super nice and will chat it up with you during your wait, helping you relieve the anxiousness and hunger that's probably taken you over by now. When given the option to seat at the bar  or a table, go for the bar. Explanation to come....

When seated you are given an ordering sheet full of columns and columns of rolls/nagiri/sushi to choose from. Careful how much you order, especially if you're at the tables, they don't bring your dishes out till they have your order complete. UNLESS you're at the bar then your order comes out as each dish is completed. By the end of the night my family and I ordered a total of four plates full of rolls/nigiri/hand rolls from the menu.

All the specialty rolls were delicious, but if you really want your money's worth, get a BUNCH of nigiri. For an all you can eat place, the seafood is pretty fresh and each dish were intricately made.

By the end of the night, we could all barely move. So satisfied.

If you go, make sure to bring a crowbar to get yourself off your seat at the end of the night.

Ahhh!!! This place is SO good. I was visiting Reno and my BF and I were craving sushi so we used Yelp to find a place that had all you can eat. Sushi Pier had the highest ratings so that is where we ended up.

I love the fact that everything you order is made fresh - usually all you can eat sushi places are buffet style. They are very generous with the fish on the nigiri. Now remember that the one small rule they have is that if you order the nigiri you have to finish your rice before you order something else. That totally makes sense and I think is a small rule for this great place!

The sushi rolls were good - but we went for lunch so the selection of rolls is less. The dinner rolls are probably more tasty than the lunch rolls. I really recommend that everyone just get the handrolls when they go here for lunch. They are SO amazing. I have never had handrolls this great and I have never seen a sushi place that has such a large selection of handrolls.

The service was also great and the sushi chefs are cool.

This is a must try.

So me and my Japanese girlfriend went there for lunch.
we loved it.

The food is very fresh, rolls are delicious. Friendly staff.
$14 for lunch and $18 for dinner.

The sushi is in "AMERICAN STYLE!!!"
That means, if you are looking for a traditional Japanese sushi, this place is totally not for you.

If not, make sure you to there at least once, you'll fall in love with the food there just like me.

I came here on a Friday night due to Yelp since I wanted to eat something else other than the usual hotel buffet during my ski trip in early January. It's essentially a sushi buffet, not much of a difference from any other buffet but at least it didn't make me and my friends feel super unhealthy afterwards.

The food was surprisingly good and does live up to the Yelp hype, even for those of us jaded by over 9000 sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. Fresh fish indeed. For $20 you get all you can eat as others have mentioned, the hand rolls and unlimited nigiri being the best part of the menu. They have all the standard types of fish and since we we were in a large group we had multiple orders of each, scallop probably being the tastiest. The barley hand roll mentioned by other yelpers is also very good. Sushi Pier has a huge selection of hand rolls so it doesn't hurt to try them all, if your stomach can handle it. Rolls on the other hand.. not a big selection and I can understand why, they aren't anything special so don't waste your stomach space.

We got quite a few glances when we first walked in probably since we rolled deep with nine Asians, perhaps a bit too many than what the locals were used to seeing haha. They don't do reservations apparently and the place is pretty small, so squeezing all of us during their dinner rush hour took some time but the staff was really great, especially our laid back server. I'm not sure if it was because we were a bunch of young Asians or not, but he was extremely informal and very chill.

Don't miss this place if you find yourself in Reno, very very solid sushi joint. +1 Yelp.

Ok, for what it is (i.e. Sushi in RENO?!) it is pretty good. It is definitely all you can eat and for dinner you're only charged $19.95 for anything you want on the sushi menu. This is pretty un-heard of in the Bay Area so I'll give this place 4 stars. The sushi isn't extremely delicious and they do not offer sashimi for all you can eat like some of the Bay Area places do ... but they do have an inventive sushi rolls menu.

Disclaimer, this is not a place you want to come for "real sushi" ... this place has LOTs of rolls if all rolls and many of the rolls are very inventive with jalapenos (which was actually quite good) etc. etc. so reset your expectations when you come. However, if you're looking for a good sushi place in Reno terms, this is it!

Great All You Can Eat Sushi and probably the best in the immediate area.  It gets crowded at lunch and you only get a 3/4 menu, so wait till dinner time rolls around.  Salmon skin and octopus in the same handroll!  Spicy rainbow rolls and rolls named after rock stars and Japanese monster movies!

+1 on the quail egg shooters!

After a long day on the slope and 2.5 hrs movie Watchman, we were famish. I would have given them 5 stars if the All you can eat would be anything on the menu but it was just the first two pages. Not a bad selection! The service was friend and we sat at the bar. Roy keep us rolling and our plate was never empty.

They have some creative rolls. Just watch out for the dinner selection rolls. They are huge portions!

We left happy and we will be coming back the next time in Reno.

MMMMM!!
14.95 for all you can eat sushi lunch, and its well worth every penny!
even though youre stuffed, you'll find room for one more.
The place can get kind of packed since it's pretty small. Sit at the bar!! the chefs are really nice and they'll make you something special, which ends up being better than whats on the menu!
Lunch is mostly handrolls, all the special cut rolls (long rolls) are only available for dinner, so don't expect to fill up on rainbow rolls, caterpillar, etc for lunch. But the hand rolls are really good! I loved the salmon skin hr and the buckley hr.
I'm thinking already thinking about the next time im going to drive 3 hours to reno.. 3 hours isnt that bad for some sushi pier.. lol!

they accept credit cards and they're more than happy to separate the tab for you.

For AYCE Sushi, Nobody beats Sushi Pier!  I've tried pretty much all the other sushi places here locally and they're still my go to place.

They're always busy, but even if you have to wait for seating, the wait time usually isn't too bad.  For sushi this good, the wait is worth it anyways.

Johnny and Mark are our favorite Chefs.  Johny will come  up with some tasty off-menu creations for you if you ask.  When my wife was pregnant and couldn't eat the raw stuff, he came up with the "Pregnant Roll" that was off the hook!

We've been loyal patrons for years so the service is always good. Make sure you go to the original Sushi Pier by though. Sushi Pier 2 sucks when it comes to service.  They make you feel as you're a burden by giving them your business. That's fine, because I'll never go back to #2.

Sushi Pier has the best Salmon skin and Uzura(Quail Egg Shooters).  Every other place in town that has Shooters come dark brown and taste like crap.  Sushi Pier's is smooth and sweet.  Damn, now I've got a sushi craving.

Hrm, how do rolls we don't order mysteriously appear on our plate?  Could it be that someone else ordered it and I didn't notice?  No, I was the one with the pen the entire time.  Hrm, something to ponder.

Keep in mind that this is in the same plaza as the Costco.  I always drive too far and end up at the airport, and then have to backtrack.  That's losing five minutes of eating time!

$23 out the door, with all the hand rolls and nigiri I can handle.

Major + on the scallop nigiri!

I will say this - I was surprised.

I was born and raised in San Francisco. I went to summer camp in Japan town and started eating sushi when I was 10. I know a good slice of fish and every single person I knew kept on telling me "If you go to Reno, go to Sushi Pier."

I did. I am happy.

So the whole "all you can eat" scared the bejesus out of me. I mean, it's a bit scary considering for $20 bucks in SF that will get you like, what, 5 pieces of nigiri? I was skeptical but decided, hell, I have been in the desert for over three weeks - even half bad sushi is fine right now,

I don't do rolls. Period. Deep fried blah blah blah godzilla whodayamean are for people who, generally, don't actually like sushi but can't bring themselves to actually say that. I eat sashimi and nigiri and maybe MAYBE the occasional handroll. I have NO idea what one of the writers were saying when he said that the nigiri was severed on huge balls of rice. Mine were TINY! Super tiny in fact and I SWORE the more I ordered the smaller they got.

The fish was great. Nothing super fancy in terms of real high quality toro but SO solid and SO fresh. The ama ebi was not all that great. I was really hoping for something more... but it;s so rare that I'm ever really SOLD on ama ebi outside of Japan (and Minako Sushi - but that's another review.)

I was impressed most of all that the chef who was serving me (I ALWAYS sit at the counter) was a woman. It's so rare to find a woman sushi chef that I am always a little giddy to eat there. She was amazing, attentive and ALWAYS asked me at just the right moment if I wanted something else.

The best? The handroll. I had eaten probably about 10 orders of nigiri at this point and thought - hell, I'll go for a handroll. I asked her if she could prepare me a handroll. I asked her to please make it a little sweet but that to do what she wanted.

oh.

damn.

She made me this amazing salmon skin, tobiko, and unagi handroll. It had japanese sprouts, thin carrots and cucumber strips. It was crunchy, sweet, spiced and perfect. I was in heaven. It was the PERFECT end to a really great meal.

DOMO ARRIGATO MR. ROBOTO

FOOD: I was impressed. The fish was fresh and abundant. The portions very generous and the balls of rice were NOT the size of ping pong balls in order to fill you up and discourage you from eating.

ATMOSPHERE: It's in a strip mall. This is a little weird. Cost-co is behind me and I felt like at any moment someone was going to come in and start selling cars or something. But my back was to the windows so I just concentrated on the fish. It isn't pretty, but it is also saving the bang for the food. You want Neon? Go to the Peppermill.

SERVICE: Great, The waitress who got my tea and sat me was awesome and never let my tea get cold. The chef was attentive and knew what I wanted after the first few orders. (I didn't go Omakase but I did ask for all her recommendations.)

PRICE: Dude!! I never thought I'd say all you can eat sushi rocks! $17.95? Awesome.

Straightforward AYCE style sushi.

Competitively priced (cheaper by a buck or two than most) and lively atmosphere targets the college crowd.  Love the Micronesian chefs, they are so fun and will come up with some delicious off menu creations at your request.  (the armadillo is a hoot, though more of a party trick than a delicious creation).

I do not like that many of the items are dinner only.  A lot of the more creative rolls are restricted for lunch customers, a trend that most of the newer Sushi joints did not adopt. (most likely due to the oversaturation of Sushi restaurants in the Reno/Sparks area, they have to remain competitive. many offer a variety of appetizers in addition to sushi for AYCE pricing).  Another major drawback is sometimes the fried items (tempura/crystal shrimp) are cold and reheated in a microwave, making them soggy and mushy.  Fried items should be made to order.  And they love mayonnaise, so request a light touch if you do not enjoy mouthfuls of mayo.

Overall a popular and laid back place that is generally a crowd pleaser.

I'm a fan for one reason, and one reason only...  The sushi chefs.

While rolls and carbon monoxide injected tuna(this is why it's bright pink) are not my thing, the chefs tried hard to make new things for me to enjoy, as well as giving me shots of Japanese like whiskey.

For this, I'm a fan if anything for the stellar service I received.

Props to my island boys!

SP was recommended by my coworkers and after reading these Yelps I made my first visit today.  Lunch is $13.95 for AYCE. Starting off with the hostess and then the waitress, service was courteous and quick. Since this was our first time at SP the hostess gave us a quick rundown and I handed my selection to the waitress. The place was nearly full but the rolls came quickly so I dug in. Not the greatest or freshest i have ever had but they were tasty and for the price, c'mon! What a deal! I'll be back that's for sure.

Grub the Soosh!!!
Ok, let me start with some background info:
I am from New Mexico.
I have lived in South Lake tahoe for the past 10 years.
I first had sushi in 1998
I've had sushi all over the country, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Las Vegas, Phoenix.
The Sushi PIER is without a doubt the best sushi I've ever had and consistently performs for 5 simple reasons:

1. Striped bass
2. Buckley Hand Roll
3. Mussels
4. Great Service and Price! (Ask for Johnny the sushi chef)
5. Did I mention the Striped bass?

I could go on and on about the intimate setting, the friendly vibe, the fast efficient hostesses/servers/chefs, but it's the quality and VARIETY of fish that keep me coming back for more!

ps. try the striped bass!
pps. Free Margaritas every anniversary

S - Sushi pier will satisfy your fix for sushi love
U - U can't beat the price for AYCE!
S - Sexy babes work there
H - Have the courage to take a quail egg shooter or 2?
I - I love the Striped Bass especially

P - Plum Wine for dessert with an Orange
I - I really recommend the Striped Bass
E - Excellent Service
R - Reno's Best Sushi (Heck, Nevada's best/USA's best I've had so far)

WOW!!!  It's really one of those places that was hyped based on the Yelp Reviews and really, really delivered BIG TIME!!!  Really KICK ASS place for ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI!  Lunch Price is $12.95 and Dinner Price is $18.95...  Both are Big Time Bargains any way you cut it...

I had actually been wanting to try it the last few times I was in Reno but just never got the chance to.  However, on my most recent visit, my weekend getaway mates were totally down for All You Can Eat Sushi and Sushi Pier was the place we decided to get our fix.

We were extremely Happy with that decision!  Not only for the Price (We went at lunch so we paid $12.95 a person), but also because the sushi was outstanding!!!

Our Favorite was the Upside Down Shrimp roll.  Oh my freakin god...  This piece of Heaven was tasty and the flavor of the sauce they used was delectable...

We felt like the Nigiri we ordered were actually better than the rolls.  I also had a chance to try one of their handrolls, which was also very good but that one handroll alone started the process of me getting full.  Before that handroll, I thought I was going to be able to eat until they ran out of Sushi for their Lunch Shift...  hehe...

The Sushi Chef was extremely friendly and made us feel right at home.  I believe his name was Jim.  And we even met a few locals who told us about Sushi Pier 2 and that THIS one was the better one though the other was much larger and more modern looking.  Most likely, I will not try to go to the other one in my lifetime cause if I come to an ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI, I am there for the FOOD and not the atmosphere.

One recommendation I would certainly make is to try and get a seat at the Sushi Bar.  This will greatly enhance your experience as you can talk with your Sushi Chef and the rolls will come out in a more timely fashion.  They also give you some Miso Soup for your meal and the Drinks are fairly priced as well.  And....  their wasabi is also the way I like it.  It burns!!!

We were even able to try some items that we've never tried before which made it even more of an interesting dining experience.  Never had quail eggs so we ordered a couple of those nigiri style and then we also had a couple of quail egg shooters.  They put quail eggs into a shot of some kind of berry wine.  Very distinctive taste.  Wasn't my favorite thing here but hey, at least I got to try something new, which always makes me happy...

What else can I say but I HAVE to make this a Tradition EVERYTIME I am in Reno!!!

Drove up to Reno for the weekend and decided to Yelp somewhere to eat for dinner.  Came across Sushi Pier as it was one of the highest rated restaurants.  Now, coming from the Bay Area which is Sushi Central, I was a little hesitant about eating Sushi, in Reno of all places.  We could've went to a casino buffet and had endless amounts of prime rib and crab legs but, I'm glad we went off the beaten path and tried out Sushi Pier.

Sushi pier is located in a strip mall, somewhat hard to find but just look for the Costco as it's directly on the opposite end.  Walking into the restaurant almost gave me a sense of clausterphobia, it's very intimate.  We decided to do the all you can eat sushi at $17.95 pp.  We were seated at the bar, seats #1 & #2, which you had to walk sideways to get to as it was narrow.

We ordered sushi and I decided to try out their handrolls as I'd get my bang for the buck.  I loved the Elvis handroll, which was "crystal shrimp" if you ever had walnut prawns, it's that, but using baby shrimp and no walnuts.  It also had shreds of crab and sauce.  Majorly, majorly delish!  Also had to order CA roll just to determine the initial quality of the sushi.  It was pretty good and they served up 8-pieces too!

The sushi chef helping us (didn't catch his name, darn it!) was pretty cool and was on the ball making about making sure we were okay.  (Note:  He's a big polynesian guy -  I think.  Really nice guy.)  Actually, everyone at the restaurant was really friendly and attentive too.  There was one guy, not sure who he was, probably the manager/owner who came around while we were there and was checking in on all their customers.

PROS:  Pretty damn good sushi for Reno!

NEGATIVES:  Sushi offerings/creativity were good, could be better.  However in their defense, if they served my "Livermore Roll" (see my review for Kawa Sushi- Livermore, CA) then I would've ran them out of business during this visit!  LOL!

OVERALL:  The all you can eat deal is the way to go.  I'll definitely consider eating there again the next time I'm in Reno and need to get my sushi fix on!

Something most people in Reno don't know about, "ALL" the fish in Reno comes from the same supplier out of San Francisco. The only difference is how they prepare it. Yes you have to prepare the fish, they don't just cut it and hand it to you. Freshness also depends on the temperature of which the fish is served and some restaurant do it right by serving it slightly chilled but to the point where the fish melts in your mouth. Not tasting icey. With that said, here is my review of this restaurant.

Food-4, Fish is prepared great here but the rolls and the rice here can be overwhelming leaving little room to try out a lot of rolls. Simple rolls, nothing fancy. Yet that's what I prefer, since I don't like sauce laden Sushi.

Service-4, Chefs are quick and nice but I can't say much about the waiter/hostess. They seem kinda slow to refill and even bring out drinks and soup.

Atmosphere-4, Busy and fun bar, simple. Nothing wild. Chefs are nice.

Only reason this isnt 5 star is the ambiance...Sushi Pier (1) is not as sexy as its sister restaurant Sushi Pier 2, but the food is always great and the mix of people at either sushi pier is always nice.

Definitely at the top of Reno's abundant all-you-can-eat sushi fish camps.

This was basically the first all-you-can-eat-sushi that I had when I got to Reno, and it's proximity to my old office didn't hurt.  I was in there at least once-a-week when I worked over on that side of town, and it was great.

The service there is fast and friendly.

The bar probably seats around 30-35 people, and maybe a 15 or so more seats at the tables.

There can be a bit of a wait, which can be a little awkward as there isn't really a waiting area, but just the space in the doorway.

I'm actually taking a star away (I'd give it 3.5 if I could).  The real benefits here are how quick the chefs are, as well as the cheap ($12.95 for lunch) price.  The reason for the dropping of the star is that the more places I try in Reno, I realize that as fast as they are, the quality suffers some.  The proportion of fish-to-rice varies wildly (even with one chef).

Found Sushi Pier on Yelp - reviews were mixed but decided after a 14 hour ordeal of a drive up from SF to Reno on Christmas Day through a snow storm, we deserved a good meal on the 26th.

Called ahead and said we had a group of 12 people showing up b/t 12-1 pm.  The person who answered the phone said no problem (even though I had read it was a crowded space).

We walk in at 1 and we flinched at first b/c the place looked packed, but the hostess/owner encouraged us to stay and showed us to the row of tables she had set aside for us.  (Mind you this was 8 adults and 4 kids ages 3-6).

Boy were we glad we stayed.  The lunch deal is unbelievable.  Made-to-order all-you-can-eat with a vast selection from their nigiri, handrolls and rolls.  We ordered tempura udon for the kiddies (solid) while we gorged on 3 rounds (maybe 4?) of sushi orders.

While a rookie Yelp reviewer, this place scored big b/c my mom (picky Korean mother who always finds something to grip about that will ruin your meal) didn't have a bad thing to say about the food or the service.  Mind you, the place is owned & operated by a Korean family (ref: what 'Mr. Kim says' in the menu about all-you-can-eat etiquette), but that usually can cut either way with mommy-dearest.

For this Bay Area native (now residing in Marietta, GA where good sushi esp all-you-can-eat sushi is harder to find), Sushi Pier was awesome.  Fish was fresh (flown in 7 days a week according to the owner) - that day, the salmon was melt-in-your-mouth good.  Plus, my brother-in-law is Japanese-American and knows his stuff and had nothing but a grin from ear to ear afterwards.

Thanks for making our family's trip to Reno so memorable.  What a difference a meal made.
