Meh...... it all depends on what you order and who makes your food.
We come here for the all-you-can-eat-sushi lunch or dinner and sit at the bar. My first experience was very good. The place was packed and somehow the wait made the sushi taste so much better. Nigiri pieces were huge, but the long rolls were just bizarre. Anything and everything can be put into the roll. This place tries to recreate japanese food, which I think is totally unnecessary, buy hey, whatever.
The second time we came here the fish was sliced wrong which made it totally unpleasant to eat. Annoying!
Ehhh.... hit or miss.
Atmosphere is a little too young and hip for what I expect sushi should be and I'm under 30.
It pains me to do so, but I have to give a less-than-stellar review for SP2. I have been here quite a few times, and it's gotten progressively worse each time. Very much like being in a bad relationship--you keep giving them another chance, hoping it will get better, but deep in your heart, you know that it's probably just time to call it quits :-/
Lately, it seems the service has been going downhill. I shouldn't have to hunt my server down to get a refill on my water, then hunt him down again, be unable to find him, and have to ask a DIFFERENT server for our check.
I'll probably go back one more time after I've given it a while, but there are far too many sushi joints in Reno and Sparks to relegate myself to this type of service.
Don't bother. The service is horrid and the food is not very fresh. I liked this place a couple of years ago, but they have gone way down hill since. I have probably been here about a dozen times and each time I am disappointed. The only perk to this place is the stocked bar and somewhat chic atmosphere. Although I don't particularly care for the crown of rowdy high school/college kids who think they are fine dining. I have learned my lesson, sushi pier 2...
I am a loyal customer of the original sushi pier!
This place is just behind my shop so I walk over to get some sushi. I walked in and was helped right away I put in my togo order 3 cal rolls.
While they were making my order they offered me a soda I took them up on it. Plus in my book. Order came out timeley. Went back to work and the sushi was great it was cold and tasted great just like sushi should taste like . It is hard to find great sushi in this town I am very picky about. Good sushi. So sushi pier you get a 5 in my book. I will be back for lunch to go. Remeber to buy local. Fellow yelpers. Thanks sushi pier. Tim
Good/great: tasty salmon, rainbow roll, tobiko.
The rest of this review is what didn't go well on a busy night.
They seated people ahead of us repeatedly. They were only parties of two - but they were sat at tables that would have accommodated our four, and they were 10 minutes later seating us than the estimated 25 minutes.
Their ponzu (sp?) sauce tasted too vinegar. The shrimp were overly sweet. The octopus didn't taste as good as our favorite spot (Sushi 7). The mussels we ordered without mayo weren't good.
The wrong food was delivered to our table, and the server told us it was our food - see look, you ordered this. Just because she had properly labeled paperwork didn't make it ours!
Much of the nigiri surprisingly came with sauce, which wasn't appealing and in fact we're allergic to wheat - a little help would have been nice, to order without sauce, as we specifically ordered some of the food without sauce/wheat.
Slow service. The server didn't offer to get us non-sauced plates, which would have been nice. We ended up semi-washing the dishes at the table.
It's close to my home and it doesn't suck. I know of places that prepare their sushi better, but for the price and proximity, I don't mind giving them some of my money.
Their service is iffy sometimes, but it's not terrible. I wouldn't use it as a complaint to not come to this restaurant.
I am definitely not a sushi expert, I just like the way all those tasty flavors explode in my mouth. This last time though, I felt like some of the fish in their handrolls wasn't cut very well. It seemed liked they were huge chunks. I like me some fish, but I feel like there was no...finesse...in those chunks. If that makes any sense. Other than that, the food is pretty consistent.
It is still our favorite sushi place in Reno. They have raised their prices. Their dinner AYCE is $18.95. It is still pretty cheap.
NOTE TO PARENTS: You can request an Infant Seat Cradle that you can use while you are eating at their sushi bar. It's cradle to place your infant car seat so you do not have to worry about hauling your stroller. I think it is very nice that they have this. Not all restaurants in Reno have it.

I think I may have eaten at Sushi Pier 2 for the last time. I have just had too many lousy evenings here. I agree with a lot of reviewers below...the service here is just terrible. If you sit at a table, be prepared for LONG waits and bad servers. If you sit at the bar, be prepared to be rushed by the sushi chef.
On our most recent visit here, we sat at the bar where the chef took it upon himself to double nearly everything we ordered. Some would call this generous, but I think that it's his way of getting us out of there sooner--if we have to eat all of our sushi or be charged extra, and he lays out giant-sized orders, we will order less because we will fill up faster. This was really annoying, and Husband and I ended up wasting a lot of food.
Plus, why does any restaurant need TEN plasma screen TVs? I feel like I'm in the sushi-eating version of Clockwork Orange. Not a pleasant eating environment.
I still enjoy their food, but I love Sushi Pier 1 too much to let it be ruined by bad experiences at their sister restaurant. From now on, I will drive the extra couple miles to eat at the original Sushi Pier.

I love sushi. I love it more when it's all you can eat - MADE TO ORDER... for $25, including tip and tax!
This place is pretty posh - they've got great music and ambiance. It is definitely one of those places intended for a great night out.
The bf, bff and his gF went came here for dinner after a day of boarding. We were hungry and ready to attack! Plus we had been drinking so we were in a great mood. 9 hand rolls and 15 long rolls later - we stumble out of the restaurant ready to pop our pants and head for the porcelain throne.
The food was delicious. The favorites of the night were the handrolls with scallop in it and "how we roll" long roll. Their sashimi was very fresh and the rolls had just the right rice to fish ratio.
Minus 1 star for our server's bad attitude and how we had to constantly ask for more tea.
All you can eat sushi?! Oh hell it is on!!! After almost 1.5hrs. later...I could not move out of my seat...but why only e 3 stars??
The menu needs revamping, for out of townees it was quite confusing to know what was available for all you can eat and what was not.
The rules on the back of the menu was a turn off.. tacky way to say "Do not make waste". I think they should come up with a better way to clarify with customers eating "all you can" that keeping cost down and affordable to at least consider how cost is wasted and how it can affect price of what we eat.
The atmosphere was sheik and can cater to a hipper young crowd. I on the other hand have a complex pallet, I like rolls but I love my raw fishes (sashimi). Their tobiko with raw quail egg was great, Their quail egg shooters were the bomb! The rolls are not so bad as well. I suggest ordering the nigiri plates (2pcs) which makes pacing yourself a lot esier when having ALL YOU CAN EAT.
For the costs of close to 19 bucks per person for the dinner buffet, it was well worth your money. Quality in the fish I would say is reasonable and above the price you pay, Yes I will come back if ever I am in town but next time I will pace myself and get a few more of those shooters.
In general a good experience. My favorite was the decor, which is more modern sports bar than the usual sushi bar look. The food was average to above average and the $18.95 all-u-can-eat dinner was a good deal.
Food: In 2 of the rolls it was pretty clear the tempura shrimp were fried in advance and sat around a bit since they were chewy, not crispy. That's the reason for the 3 stars. Believe me, we were hungry so the food didn't sit around and get soggy. The upside down shrimp was interesting and used real crab, not "krab", but the crab tasted a little off so I stopped eating it.
Better than average selection of cold sakes.
Service was very good.
Our table was stick dirty when we were seated but our server did a good job of being appropriately disgusted and cleaning it up for us. Considering they had to go get a table ready in a half-empty restaurant, though, this was a little weird.
I wouldn't mind going again but would search for other places to try first...
According to my friend who is a local of the area, Sushi Pier 2 changed locations. This update is about the new venue.
Sushi Pier 2's new location has an modern-urban feel to it. The biggest change is the hip hop and rap music in the background. Along with the sushi, it feels like the set of "Romeo Must Die". There are at least two flat screen televisions per wall with about ten total. The atmosphere feels catered to the white young male poser and his gang of hooligans. I felt out of place until the food came.
We had such a blast at our last Sushi Pier experience that we had to come back for the all you can eat sushi dinner for just $18. We ordered enough food to fill our table four times! Good gracious. Some delusional person in our group ordered several fried rolls. DO NOT GET ANY FRIED ROLLS. Stick to the nigiri, hand rolls, and ones without cream. Whoever didn't admit to getting the fried rolls made us, guys, eat them. Ugh. I hate fried creamy rolls. It felt like I was at the carnival. DO NOT GET THE AVALANCHE ROLL.
What's great about the sushi is that it's all made to order. It's not a buffet where you go to different trays and pick off stale sushi with rock hard rice. Some of the fish and seafood is better than others, but everything is relatively good. This is a buffet after all so my standards lowered appropriately. I liked the scallop rolls.
Service is a bit odd. The waitresses are all dressed in totally casual clothes. I don't remember if they had name tags. It's really hard to tell if they work there or not. They forgot some of the names of our dishes, but we ordered so much I don't blame them. They also carry a bit of a sarcastic jeer. I think they were trying to go along with a club atmosphere but I'd rather have my wait staff in some kind of uniform especially in a place this big and busy. I'm all for servers wearing jeans and being comfortable, but can all the servers just wear the same color shirt?
If I'm skiing and in the area again, I'll be sure to come back. Bar dining is much better than the table, but if you have a big group you'll be forced to sit at a table. After the sushi buffet you won't want to mention the word "sushi" for quite some time.

The service was really good, even despite the fact that we went in on a Sunday night. It was full of the younger crowd, obviously a trendier place to hang out atm. I saw this one waitress that looks EXACTLY like the chick from Mirrors' Edge....Next time I'll be getting a pic lol. There was a long wait between the first order of the $20 all-you-can-eat sushi and the next, which was irritating, but the many flatscreen tv's kept our interest. It was really clean, and the chefs did a good job on all of the rolls that we ordered. Nothing dry or badly made.
Overall, the staff was friendly, the food was great (even the quail egg shooter that I had!) and I'll definitely be going back again.
Thanks to the other 61 reviewers who averaged this place out to 4.5 star restaurant. I was up in Reno this weekend and we were craving Japanese, and through the power of Yelp Mobile we came across this gem.
Being from the Bay Area there's a plethora of good Japanese food, so I have a hard time eating 'bad' Japanese food. While the streets and the neighborhood aren't necessarily high-end, what can one expect...you're in Reno! The restaurant though, once you walk-through, is surprisingly nice. It's clean, trendy, and larger than your average Japanese restaurant in the SF Bay.
$18.95 for all you can eat...sound too good to be true...well it isn't. The rolls, nigiri, and hand rolls are all tasty! The tuna was the only thing disappointing, but for that price...who can complain?
Salmon Skin handroll is one of the best I've ever had....you must try it.
Wash it all down with some cold unfiltered sake (Pearl), and you're in heaven.
A definite place to stop off and eat if you're ever in the area.
We eat at the other Sushi Pier more often than I care to admit, so we decided to mix things up recently and head out to Sushi Pier 2. Like the other location, Sushi Pier 2 is great for the made to order all you can eat sushi. The nigiri and the hand rolls are your best bets, but I am also partial to the That's How We Roll roll.
Service does get a little slow when it gets busy, and it certainly gets really busy on weekend nights. But, my biggest objection is that whenever we have placed a big order, inevitably we don't receive all of it. Sure, you can just keep ordering, but like I said, service is slow and I'd rather just get what I order the first time around. Oh well, it's not enough of an annoyance to keep me from coming back.
I was so excited when I heard that they were opening Sushi Pier 2 in my neighborhood. Whenever my friends and I saw the "Coming Soon" sign we squealed with excitement.
Then that day came.. and it brought the fratties and the high school kids.
BOOOOOOOOO!
The wait is super long.
Your order is always wrong.
And I swear the bar in the back is run by the sushi rejects.
I once had a guy curse me under his breathe when I ordered salmon skin with octopus.
Come on!
What happened to you Sushi Pier 2? What happened?!
mmmm all you can eat sushi for under $20 bucks! F*#@ yeah! This place is wonderous and has so much space now! Since all the fish in reno/tahoe comes from the same sf supplier its hard to imagine why some places over change?!? They have 2 sushi bars, a drink bar, and floor seating. Fully equiped with flat screens everywhere so you can watch any game while you sit stuffing your face : P Plenty of seating to go around and it still gets packed and rolled by starving sushi lovers!
Random Monday night, two people. Indetermined amount of wait time.
Finally sat at the bar. Water was quick to come, but not the food.
Once again, I didn't get half of what I ordered. And hello, I was sitting right at the bar, ordering with the chef directly!
Back to regular Sushi Pier next time around. And hopefully make a reservation or something.

I'm astounded by these reviews.
I live in San Francisco and my boyfriend lives here in Reno, and although skeptical about having sushi in Nevada (I'm spoiled over in the city with some of the best in the country) I thought I'd give it a whirl anyways. I was having a craving.
ICK! The tempura shrimp in the roll was STALE? Imitation crab? Nothing fresh, everything room temperature, bland, and stale tasting. Barf.
If you'd like to try REAL sushi, try driving three and a half hours or so west on I-80.
All you can eat Sushi for $18.99!!!
And unlike other all you can eat places, the sushi is actually good. I've been here several times and the sushi has always been really good. It's a great place to go if you're tired of traditional buffet foods from the casinos. My recomendations are the "How We Roll" ( I think I just like the name) and any of the hand rolls. The little desert orange is good too. There was one server that I didn't like because he made us feel like we couldn't order as much as we wanted. He must have been having a bad day. Other than that, I've had great food and good service.
Fast food of sushi is how I would describe Sushi Pier 2. The atmosphere is relaxed and modern. The menu is pretty large with lots of the normal stuff. The one cool thing about this place is the all you can eat sushi for $18.95 (prices must have gone up).
The wait staff didn't really seem to know what was going on though. The all you can eat sushi comes out on big platters with a ton of the things you and other people in your party ordered on it. So I had to ask them which rolls were which, etc. They didn't seem to know. The presentation wasn't all i hoped it would be. I think of sushi as an art form and this was just thrown on the plate. The taste was alright. There were a few good rolls. The fish didn't seem the freshest though.
I went with some family that live in Reno and who have been there before and they just weren't impressed with the service we had received and said that they probably won't be back.
I would like to give this a 2.5 but i will just round down and give it a 2.
Usually my favorite Sushi restaurant but lately the fish has not tasted very fresh and I have several friends who got sick after eating here. The quail egg shhoters are excellent; however, as are their hand rolls!
Recommended by a friend of mine who now visits Reno a lot more and can be considered a local. The vibe is excellent, chefs were accomodating even when we came in 1 hr before closing with 10 heads. We all seated ourselves at the bar and the chefs just dished out everything we asked for. BETTER YET, they even let us take back some of the stuff we ordered extra or they gave extra into to go boxes. The sushi is alright here as I like the variety they have. The upside down shrimp is really good as well as some of their other different rolls. I may not like their idea of a rainbow hand roll, but the other handrolls were good. I just get the idea that they put too much rice into their rolls in order to fill us up. My all time favorite all you can eat sushi would have to be Fuji's in Davis, CA, but this one seems to work in Reno.
Something most people in Reno don't know about, "ALL" the fish in Reno comes from the same supplier out of San Francisco. The only difference is how they prepare it. Yes you have to prepare the fish, they don't just cut it and hand it to you. Freshness also depends on the temperature of which the fish is served and some restaurant do it right by serving it slightly chilled but to the point where the fish melts in your mouth. Not tasting icey. With that said, here is my review of this restaurant.
Food-3, Nothing special, even though the fish is prepared the same as Sushi Pier 1, the chefs here don't seem as skilled.
Service-3, Long waits for this chic place and chefs too busy to have small talks.
Atmosphere-4, Like the big open space and the million TV that I can watch while waiting for my Chef to prepare food.
i've been here twice once for lunch and once for dinner, for lunch we were seated immediately in a booth, we both got all you can eat for 13.95 but you can only order from half of the menu, which totally sucked because all the good rolls werent available. but i fell in love with the midtown roll which is deep fried with crab, cream cheese, and avacado it was so YUMMY!!! And the service was great.
for dinner we came in around 4 hoping to beat the crowd since it was a friday, so we got there and there was plenty of seating, but the hostess said it would be a 15 min wait to get a booth, but if we wanted a table we could be seated now, so we got a table. but wishing we could sit in one of the 10 empty booths! i got all you can eat for 18.95, but my husband wanted one of their dinners. they took my order but forgot to take my husbands so he didnt get to order until i got my food, poor guy!he waited like 30 mins while i ate my sushi, which i shared with him, even though theres a strict rule about not sharing ur sushi! the service was horrible this time! but they took $2 of the final bill which is cool i guess ,the food was really good and im definetly going to go back.
This place is awesome!! I would drive all the way to Reno just to eat here!! For $20 pp for all-you-can eat sushi, this is an awesome deal! The sushi is freshly made, and the list of nigiri/sushi rolls you can choose from is fairly extensive.
I've been to other sushi all-you-can-eat where they make the rolls big and full of rice to purposely get you full. This place does not pack the rice. Also, you can check off almost anything you want on their list, and they will make it. The sushi is freshly made and the quality is good. They also have quail egg shooters, which seemed really interesting, but I was too scared to try. :P
The wait might be a little bit long, but it is well worth it. Service is average, and you might have to flag your server down when they're busy.
Overall, for the price, what more can you ask for! YUMMY! I can't wait to visit this place again!!
Yikes, BEWARE, The worst Sushi restaurant in Reno besides Aloha. This is the cool popular hotspot hangout for teenagers and tweenty somethings and they rave about it for that reason(I guess they'll eat anything and find it good ala Taco Bell) but the quality of the sushi is quite poor and the service is terrible. I'm not surprised that several dozen folks got food poisoning at the prior SushiPier2 location and this place is still not well maintained like the last one. Not much has changed, I thought they might have changed after the food poisoning(hand washing problem I believe it was?---gag) and new location. NOPE! There was rice scattered on the floor with other food droppings scattered here and there. Someone needs to go around and clean that up every hour or so. Nasty. I always look at the chefs preparation station to see if it is kept clean and well maintained and in order. Pretty sloppy and dirty at Sushi Pier2. The rice was just plain bland and improperly over cooked till mushy with no sweet rice wine flavor. It's like it was just over boiled and they didn't add the rice wine to season and flavor it. Bad part there was lots of rice and the fish was thinly sliced. I flyfish the planet and I have caught every tuna from Yellowfin, Albacore, Big Eye, Bluefin, also Salmon and Yelowtail, Halibut, Striped Bass, Red Snapper off the CA coast and have a chest freezer packed. I know quality fish and seafood and I make my own sushi having the fish flown in over night from a sushi/seafood distributor. Quality sushi isn't at Sushi Pier2.
Are they hiring mentally disabled waitresses? The table service is flat out terrible. Avoid at all costs. There were alot of tables moaning and groaning with messed up orders and loooooong waits. Some couples said they were waiting 30+ minutes since they placed their order. That was after they waited 15 -30++ minutes waiting to be seated. No wonder so many patrons were so pissed. Then after all that they were getting peoples orders wrong to top it all off. Fortunately I avoided that fiasco by sitting at the bar. My service was prompt but the sushi chef decides to take a break????? It is freakin 1:30 and you are leaving for a break. You serve lunch from 11 to 3 ......tough it out. A bathroom break is one thing but bailing out during lunch????? Give ME a BREAK. Then the guy down the bar completely ignores you! WTF? Sadly I have experienced this....I'm going on break crap at a few other sushi locations around reno. Is there a Sushi Chef Union that allows them to take breaks during the middle of lunch?
There are much better Sushi places in reno. Try Sushi Moto http://www.sushimotore.../ on the south end of town it is much better. Try their Seared Tuna....best there is, excellent slightly spicy seasoning but very flavorful. They SMOKE their own Salmon. Smaller Creative long rolls with macadamian nuts, mango, japanese basil etc. Very clean well maintained.
Hiroba Sushi is pretty good, they have UNI and very good New Zealand Mussles and Gyoza Pot stickers. But their Sho Chiku Bai cold unfiltered Nigori Sake https://www.finewineho... is $12????? Way over priced. It is $7 at Sushi Moto. Sushi 7 is ok, safe and clean and 2 for 1 SAKE but nothing special. Kokopelli's has REAL BLUE CRAB not the fake crap every other place serves AND ABALONE and All you can eat SASHIMI if you get tired of all the rice at SushiPier2 but no atmosphere if that's what you want. I give it high marks for the AYCE Sashimi and thick quality fish, try the smoked salmon/LOX hand roll it is excellent. Peony is ok, Ijji is ok nothing special. Ichiban is ok.
Avoid at all costs: SushiPier2, Aloha Sushi, SushiTime(massive rice), Sushi Boat, Sushi Teri(massive rice), Sushi House.
All you can eat sushi for $12.95 for lunch and $17.95 for dinner. The lunch selection is kinda limited, but still good. PLUS, you have a fully stocked bar. Big screen TV's too. If the wait staff is on their game, then the service is good. Otherwise, you might have to get their attention once in a while. But that is because the place is usually PACKED!!
The sushi is worth the money. Period.
ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI repeat - all you can eat tasty damn sushi for $17.95! My brother eats here like once a week and every time I visit him we have lunch or dinner here. This is the man who called sushi 'bait' growing up. They've managed to convert him. Every piece of fish or creative roll combination I've had has ranged from good to super tasty. That and I had the frostiest mug of Kirin that I've ever had in my life. Try the sushi below and go early to get on the wait list.
Must try:
-Joey Ramone hand roll
-Moondog hand roll
-Rodan roll
-Upside down shrimp
Saturday evening was my second time at Sushi Pier 2. After a day at the slopes wanted to bring the family to reno for some games and gambling. The first time we came here we waited over an hour for a table and the wait for the sushi was really slow.
This time we came early, arriving at 5:20pm. As we walked in most of the tables were empty so I figured we would be ok. After waiting around, the hostess finally showed up and let us know that wait staff were returning from breaks and it would be about 20 minutes before we were seated. There was about 5 people ahead of us on the wait list so I thought that was a pretty good estimate. After about 45 minutes and more than 5 parties we were finally seated. It seems that the list is a mere record of names but not a priority list. I noticed some larger parties behind us were seated before us. Still when we were seated, there were a bunch of tables open.
As with the other reviews, this is an all you can eat place. You can pick and choose what you want and then your order arrives. The wait wasn't too bad but similar to my first visit, my children's meals didn't come with ours (in fact we had to ask for their order).
I made the mistake not ordering enough and ordered some additional pieces. They never came, so even though they have all sorts of warnings on the menu about over ordering, the wait forces you to order as much as you plan on eating, if not you'll have to wait longer for your additional pieces.
The sushi was pretty fresh but the slow service makes it difficult to recommend Sushi Pier 2 if you prefer to not lose a few hours of your life that you will never get back waiting to be seated or for your order.
I love this restaurant. It is always busy but the majority of the time, the service is fast and friendly.
The restaurant is trendy with sports on plasma's all over. The bar is fully stocked and the sushi bars are huge. Again, this place is very popular and it is almost always busy. I don't know why some people don't like it as much but it must arise with the service
I recommend getting a table for the AYCE sushi as you get all the food you ordered at once(you can order as many times as you like) instead of sitting at the bar.
The food is delicious with interesting twists on traditional sushi. The fish is high quality and I assure you that you will leave full.
I love this restaurant I and I will continue to faithfully return!
Wow... Read the reviews of Sushi Pier so decided to stop by.
I'm still in total shock.
lunch - $12.95
dinner - $17.95
for ALL YOU CAN EAT SUSHI.
Ok, at first I wasn't too excited because I"m expecting some low quality sushi with tons of rice or small fish, etc.
But these are real sushi. Hand rolls, rainbow rolls, nigiris.. wow.. we must've easily ate over $60 worth of sushi / each in the bay area for $17.95 each. How do they make any profit? We came out sick of sushis.
You just get a list of sushis and you can check them off and they'll make you the sushi. If you are still hungry, order more. Unbelievable!
I wish they bring this to Bay Area.. it would destroy all sushi restaurants.
Go Sushi Pier!
Nitpick : The only thing is the waitress was very cautious making sure the we wouldn't share with the ones that didn't want the "all you can eat" deal and also we couldn't take home the left over, but that's understandable.
Tip : Bring a ziploc bag to take home your left overs :p
Tip #2 : Hot tea costs $1.50. Don't order it.
All you can eat sushi. The scary proposition for a self-proclaimed nigiri snob. There is a general concern saying that the more production/commercialized a sushi restaurant is, the more quality drops. The same may not be said about Sushi Pier.
Highly commercialized. Classical westernized sushi - sports + sushi bar. With 8 or so flatscreens all around, its nice to generally eat, watch the game. Nothing edomae purist about this place - don't expect as much.
Food quality is decent - most people come here for sushi. Nobody really comes here to eat cooked food, or so it seems. Also, not crazy blow your mind rare of the rarest type of sushi, but will beat your run of the mill kaiten. Sit at the sushi bar for best service.
Listing of sushi I ate.
Amaebi nigiri x2 - small amaebi, not at all translucent. seemed cooked. a miss.
Sake nigiri x4 - decent. came with lemon slices.
Hotate nigiri x2 - not expecting supreme, but presentation was nice, see photo. decent tasting.
Hamachi handroll x4 - mmm filling. good quality hamachi as well. no strange aftertaste.
Rainbow handroll x1- more mmm filling. not bad.
Special scallop handroll x1 - not a fan. pre-mixed bait quality scallops with tons of mayo and tobiko. not special at all.
ika nigiri x5 - highlight of the group. not bad at all. slightly chewy, but still crisp. sweet tasting.
ikura nigiri x2 - not a fan. no prep, tasted like the prepackaged ikura. sticky, sour.
striped bass nigiri x2 - decent, tasted like tai. could have been tai for all I knew. boo for siracha on top. not a fan.
saba nigiri x2 - decent prep. again, boo for siracha.
shari - if it could really be called that, was unremarkable. overly sticky. overly salted. mass production quality. I guess that's how they make you full - for an all you can eat.
I myself did not see Uni on the menu. Otherwise I would have ordered at least 15-20 orders.
But all this for 13 dollars. Averaging less than a dollar a piece for nigiri. I'd eat here anytime for that price.
4 stars - Mainly for price. A few highlights noted - I liked the hamachi and the ika. Save 13$ from your gambling at the cheap-o tables, or skip the standard hotel buffets and come here.
A group of us partied at Reno over Labor Day weekend and in between splashing pool parties, roulette and craps tables, we were suddenly hit with an unbearable sushi craving. So we stopped anyone who looked local to enquire if there is any good sushi places in Reno.
Believe me, we did ask around like 10 locals on the outskirts of Reno and 6 mentioned Sushi Pier, 3 told us about Kokopelli's in the casino and one said Sushi Club.
Which one do you think we tried ? Guess ?
It was confirmed once we heard Sushi Pier for the seventh time from a mother of two shopping at Walmart. She mentioned Sushi Pier has 2 locations. The original one is on Plumb Lane in the Costco complex and the latest and bigger one on S. Virginia Street.
We headed to the newer one in no time. It wasn't really easy to find because the building doesn't front Virginia street. It looked quite dull and small from the outside like any other strip mall complex.
Once you step inside, the restaurant unfolds into an ultra modern lounge area with 2 well-stocked full bars, 2 sushi stations and at least 8 Vizio Plasma TVs around the room for your meal-time entertainment. Each sushi station can have up to 5 sushi chefs working at the same time. We were impressed.
The offering was extensive for the all-you-can eat price. The menu didn't just offer the novice items like California rolls, instead it included Amaebi, Tobiko with raw quail eggs and Uni too. The fish slices were generous, fresh and flavorful. Besides the nigiri, they offered an assortment of hand-rolls which included my favorite salmon skin and octopus. We were impressed once again.
Our server was friendly and attentive. Try the cold unfiltered sake on a sweaty hot summer day, and you will feel like a million bucks.
Unfortunately, we had to minus a star because every round of sushi brought to our table, there was at least one ordered item missing. We waited for the missing items to be served, but they never came and no one bothered to inform us. Maybe the restaurant is policing or rationing their sushi supply OR maybe the chef genuinely missed the checked items. We never knew the reason.
Overall a very pleasant Reno sushi experience which we'd recommend to any visitor.
the food is okay. Service is TERRIBLE! I will not come here again, and if I do then there will be zero tip. The chefs treat you like crap, the whole establishment does. They seem to do the opposite of "the customer is always right"...do not go out of their way for you...they act like you have to go out of your way for them. This is not right, alas, people still go to this place.
Perhaps the service is directly related to the time that you show up? I went around dinner time with some friends and we had a terrible time.
Ashley K. nailed it with her opening line... It's fast food sushi, except slow. I find myself going back cause its cheap, convenient, and the nigiri is always solid. No matter how empty the place is, it seems they prefer to make you wait to be seated at the nearly empty bar. After that, it's not uncommon to wait 10 or more minutes to get your beverages, water included. The "chefs" are hit or miss. Some are friendly, and some seem burdened by your orders. Good place if you're with a group, as they have larger tables than most other sushi places in town.
A great place to try if you ever visit the Reno area and want to eat off the strip for once. Sushi Pier reminds of Masu in San Mateo, CA because of its all you can eat menu. It's a lil more pricey - around $18/person (I think we went for dinner) but its a better experience and I thought it was worth the price. There's no pre-made sushi bar involved where you grab what you want. Instead, you choose from the selected items on the menu (all you can eat), which is more fresh. There is a variety of sushi to try so go at a slow pace if you want to get your money's worth. All you can eat handrolls too...perfect! I prefer handrolls and nigiri when it comes to this style of ordering because the special rolls will fill you up too quickly! It's been awhile since I was last there so I forgot all the names of the rolls I liked but everything tasted good to me. I do remember that I kept ordering that upside down shrimp.
if you're a so-called sushi snob and expecting Masa Takayama to fix you up a slice of o-toro behind the sushi bar, don't go here. this is reno NV, not Tokyo, so cut it some slack. but If you're into americanized sushi: Rock n Rolls and Caterpillar Rolls, etc. this place is for you. the rolls are all pretty tasty and it's ALL YOU CAN EAT, SON! this place can be slow, so block out an hour or two. know what you're getting into and you'll leave satisfied.
This is a great place to have sushi. They the option for all you can eat which is great for a big party. The only thing that sucks about this place is that when you do want to do the all you can eat thing, you must finish all the sushi, otherwise they charge you extra for wasting the food. The environment is pretty decent. The waitress that was serving us though was kind of rude, but I heard the others aren't that bad, so I would still definitely stop by again next time I'm in town. It seems like they're always packed, but that only says that they have GOOD SUSHI. Definitely worth it to try.
