The sushi is always fresh and tasty.

The prices are good.

Very small place! You have to choose the time to go there if you don't want to wait in line for a long time.

The place is perfect if your only interest is eating great sushi without spending lots of money.

Came here for dinner the other night and we grabbed the last two seats out of the eight seats inside.

Now, I must say this is the smallest, most cramped restaurant I've been in. It's open seating and the chef (this old man) looks and acts really grumpy makes all the sushi. The guy who took our order was pretty cute, seems like he may be the grandson of the chef. Overall, we had to wait patiently for our sushi order because there's only one person serving everyone, and it is a full house. This couple came in and ordered a sashimi combo, but got yelled at by the chef for not knowing what they wanted because they were expecting sushi with rice and they got sashimi. LOL, it was funny watching this little old japanese guy scolding them and the couple got scared. All in all, the sushi is great for the price. I gave it three starst because the place is very cramped and I'm not sure about the sanitation of the kitchen area.

I absolutely love the ambiance and intimate feeling of Sushi on the Run.  I really don't think there are any other sushi joints in the Peninsula this small and where you feel like the chef, Nobo, is preparing items just for you.

On this return visit, I decided to order a variety of sushi I had a craving for: salmon, hamachi, amaebi, tobiko with quail egg, and unagi.  I was a bit disappointed when Nobo shared that he didn't have any anago or toro.  Also, the quality of the salmon and amaebi wasn't quite as good as last time either.  But It was a Tuesday and it is a small operation, so neither points should reflect too negatively as selection and quality are still outstanding.  More something to be aware of.

Surprisingly, I was still hungry after 10 pieces of sushi and decided to try their salmon skin hand roll.  It took 15 minutes to prepare (Nobo informed me of this).  Luckily, I snuck my order in before two arriving groups of patrons or it would have been even longer.  It was worth the wait.

The salmon skin hand roll (I'm not a fan of hand rolls) was probably the best hand roll I've ever eaten!  The salmon was the best quality cut, cooked ever so slightly, and combined with fresh avocado and garnish.  It definitely was a handful and the seaweed and salmon skin had a wonderful crunch.  I'm definitely a new fan of this item.  At $7.95 each, it's a bit pricey, but I thought the serving size was generous.

Speaking of prices, Sushi on the Run does get pricey rather quickly if you order a-la-carte as I did.  Last time, I ordered a 9 piece sushi combo (that included several of the items I ordered this time) and it was significantly cheaper.  I also think that the rolls are priced more affordably and are probably a good supplement to nigiri that will keep your budget more reasonable.  All good tips for my next visit...

definitely one of the best sushi place. if you come for a 4 star restaurant service, this isn't your place. but if you come for great sushi, this is it. fresh fish. and he gives you lots of fish. the wait at lunch time can be a pain in the butt, so i try to come exactly when they open. and as others are saying, definitely not a place for big group. i also like their green tea, which they make from the leaf, not tea bag green tea like most places.

Ok, I know people love this on yelp, but the sushi snob in me says no. I can't love it. Honestly, it's not that great, compared to the top tier of sushi bars I've tried.

Japanese owned, Chef Nobo mans the only station in this small 8 seat bar. Nothing else, no sit down cooked food, no chicken teriyaki, nothing else. Very sushi-nazi-ish, he stern glances at you, and isn't much of a greeter. At least he knows his fish - I tried to ask for Engawa (surprise?), and he said he was out of hirame. The younger cashier just looked at me with a puzzled look.

The general consensus in this place is that people love it, partially because of it's fresh, large cuts. But large doesn't even encompass what you're getting here. Each nigiri is sized probably larger than even Korean sized cuts. I was seriously gagging after each piece, there's no semblance of any shari to neta ratio, just a big block of fish, placed on a square of rice.

Some really "Nobu K." termed "Jive-Ass rolls" here. One memorable (or unmemorable for that matter) was one with unagi, tuna, macadamia nuts, and tons of tobiko. Girlfriend got it, I tried it, I did not like it.

Nigiri listing of what I had.
2x Maguro - I can't eat maguro anymore. I don't know what to say.
2x Sake - Decentish.
2x Unagi - Bleh, pre-packaged Kabayaki. I saw him cut up the package right in front of me, then toss in a few pieces into the toaster.
1x Hamachi - Ok, this cut was a bit weird. One slice was segmented, and the rest looks like cut like an igloo. Did Nobo cut off the bad parts of the fish, and just give the edible parts? Maybe.
1x Ika - Decent-ish again. Monster cut, but at least was nice since it had some shiso treatment underneath. Slightly crisp.
1x Kani - Actual real crab served gunkan style. Pre-cooked though.
2x Tamago - Just egg omlette, no dashi flavoring, no salt. Really lacked flavor.
2x Uni - Ok, this was pretty good. Slightly runny, but tasted sweet.

Rice had NO salt/vinegar flavor whatsoever. Tasted sweet, tasted mushy. Even my girlfriend said it was not good rice (telltale, since she's never complained to me before about these things).

I guess a lot of things here just lack flavor.

+1 star for being an old school Sharks fan. Lot of old signed Sharks memorabilia. Though nobody really from the current lineup (I guess Mike Ricci counts, but he's not actually playing).

2 stars - Not one of my favorites, don't think I'll be back. Chef Nobo's got enough return customers to keep him in business, but I won't be one of them.

I'd say 95% of the clientele are people either looking for value or don't know their hamachi from their kanpachi.

Great sushi.

Bring your own alcohol, as they don't have a liquor license, so they cannot serve.

This place only seats about 8 people. Make sure you have a small group, and make sure you really enjoy their company, because you're gonna sit CLOSE to them. If you're okay with that, you are in for some great sushi.

The owner is about 450 years old and is a MASTER sushi chef. Watching him work is half the show, The other half is the menu, which is pasted up on the wall behind you IN REVERSE. The old man has a giant mirror on the wall behind him so that you can read the menu on the wall behind you. Pretty ingenious, really.

It's a great place. I have other favorites for sushi, but Sushi on the Run in Los Gatos is a great place to show off Los Gatos' flair, and to have a GREAT quick hit of the raw stuff.

If you're looking for what a really good, mom 'n pop restaurant in japan is like, look no further.  Sure the place is small, but that's exactly some of the really good restaurants in Japan are.  All the sushi is prepared by the same man, and only him.  So you know what you're getting.  Get there early or be prepared to wait, as they only seat 8 or so at a time.  It's cramped, but other patrons are generally super friendly.  If you're  Shark's fan, you'll get along great with the owner as well.

I highly recommend this place to anyone.

this place rocks!

a good buddy of mine who used to work here introduced me to nobo and his fine establishment.  the sashimi is fresh and the portions ginormous. our first order was the hamachi and i dubbed it "the hamachi shoe" cuz it was about size of a 10.5 shoe.

If you are strictly looking for fresh, quality sushi/sashimi, this is your place.  I had the special during lunch and it was awesome.  Just make sure you are wearing deodorant when you come here because you will be sitting shoulder to shoulder with the people next to you.

Taking one star off for the ambience and my ocd of cleanliness.

The sushi here is pretty amazing.   It's fresh and really tasty. The size and the difficulty of locating sush on the run are the only draw backs to this place.   You kind of feel like a sardine in a sardine can.  But it's worth the cramming.  I heard they get their fish fresh daily from santa cruz.  It's probably the best sushi in the south bay.

The sushi is delicious and fresh here!  The restaurant is very small ~ seats only 8 folks ~ so you need to come when they open or take your chances and wait.  I won't go into the types of fish served here (you can read the other reviews for that) but know it is delicious....

If you like sushi rolls, there are a variety made here to tempt your taste buds!  It's almost like a private party with 8 people around the counter eating really good sushi.....easy conversation with the folks around you since its so compact inside.  The large window front allows natural light to filter in during the lunch hour (12PM-2:30PM M-F) and at night, the neon lights are on full blast.

It's a fun atmosphere for sure so make your way down to Los Gatos for good sushi in an intimate setting....a lunch spot you will find me at during the week and every now and then for dinner with the hubby!

my dad took me here for my first sushi experience at least 15 years ago, so it holds a very special place in my heart. (we were from the KUNTRY, so eating sushi was akin to a californian trying velveeta or something with a ham hock in it for the first time.)  it's straight up traditional sushi and considering i now eat rolls wrapped in bacon or with rooster sauce on them that float to me on a boat- this was a great place to cut my baby sushi teeth on.

it's teeny wee, the owner is awesome and the fish is fresh daily.  just don't go admitting to any sririacha inspired indecencies and you should be a-o.k.

Small, simple sushi bar. There's nothing super fancy here. The rolls are pretty standard but the fish is very fresh and the nigiri cuts are super generous. Not only are the slices long, they are almost excessively thick. Each piece of nigiri takes two mouthfuls. I just wish he had fish like aji and white tuna.
Because the bar has only eight seats, the wait can get long.

It's a bit of a trek from where I live in Sunnyvale, but the nigiri was amazing, the service was impeccable (though not chatty), the fish was FRESH, not a slacker among them. I went on a weeknight and even then, I had to wait, but it was totally worth it!

Hands down some of the best sushi you will find in the valley. If you happen to be in Los Gatos and you're in the mood for sushi, this is the place to be. Shipped in fresh daily from Japan. However, the place is literally a hole in the wall kind of restaurant. There is only a bar with room for 8 people at a time.

All the rolls are wonderful due to the freshness, but I typically start with a seafood salad. It's a few pieces of smoked salmon, mackerel, shrimp, squid, and tuna on top of thinly sliced cucumbers with an excellent sauce served in a bowl. After that, it's typically a couple of the specials (Ricky's Rolls Royce Roll, Big Wave Dave or Volcano).

If you are in the mood for sashimi, the portions are nearly double the size and excellent quality. The unagi is a must if you are an unagi fan. If it's lunch time, they have an excellent lunch special with a variety of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, unagi and california rolls for under $20.

One of the best things about this place is that it's BYOB and there is no corkage fee and they are more than glad to provide glasses for whatever it is you're drinking (beer, sake, wine, etc). There is a Safeway down Santa Cruz if you happen to forget to bring some.

It's a very casual atmosphere and intimate. Not open on Mondays.

My first night out in Los Gatos was at Sushi On The Run. I was walking by and this crazy woman (I'm not kidding) named Oceana (see) literally got up from her stool and pulled me into the restaurant. She wouldn't stop ranting about how good the sushi was, blah blah blah. Thank god I didn't have the heart to blow her off because the sushi was fantastic. I love Nobo, although I will admit to being quite afraid my first time. But once you get the routine down, he is a sweet old man who loves his sushi. I suggest the salmon skin hand roll, it's to die for. Bring your own beer and get there before 8 or he runs out of all the good stuff. Oh, and make sure to go soon. My sources say Nobo is heading back to Japan to retire and will not be around much longer. Boo . . .

If you're looking for the sushi nazi you've found him.  Nobu owns and works at this place.  He deserves every right to be straight faced and curt because his food just tastes so damn good.. i couldn't care less if he were a saint or a sinner.  The fish are flown in from Santa Cruz and Japan on a daily basis.. no wonder the quality is up to my head.  This place only seats  7-8 people so be prepared to wait in line.  The Salmon skin hand roll is what I feel should be Nobu's claim to fame.. but I'm sure other people will beg to differ. His nigiri... so tasty ... so fresh and so clean.  Order the Sake and Hamachi Nigiri... to die for...and then stop by at Cafe Delatti for some yummy frozen yogurt. :)

It's a hole in the wall (maximum seating capacity of 8), so make plans to get there early to get a seat.

Hidden gem of a sushi restaurant. If you want ambiance and a full restaurant this is not the place for you. This sushi bar is literally a bar with just enough space for two people behind the bar to make delicious sushi, and 8 people to squeeze into sit at the bar and eat it. This place is almost always full at prime eating times. And to the person who was upset that they couldn't waltz in and order on their 30 minute lunch break I would like to point out that there is one assistant and one sushi chef preparing food. There is a reason the place is so small. Quality. Yes it is called sushi on a run, however they do not veer from quality sushi preparation to rush your order.

With that said, this is the best sushi I have been able to find in the Bay Area that is affordable. The tight eating area makes for interesting meetings with the leftie sitting on your right that keeps elbowing you on accident. It's fun because it's funky. If you're someone who is high maintenance and wants things just so, this is not the place for you. If you're someone looking to eat at a funky little place with delicious fresh sushi and fish flown in from the chef's home town in Japan, this is the best place to go.

this place is awesome. only seats 8 people at a time and closed on mondays. i only order the rolls, which are really fresh ( i cant really comment on the sashimi, but it's all from the same piece of fish, so i dont see why people complain about the sashimi here).

the owner is funny. he reminds me of the soup nazi from seinfeld. one guy walked in and tried to order take out, but Nobo (the owner)  said "NO! NO TAKE OUT! NO MORE RICE!" (when clearly he still had more rice). basically he won't do take out if he is busy, and he is always busy on weekends.

i read a complaint on how bad the rice is. someone said it was "sticky"
it's SUSHI RICE. it's SUPPOSED to be sticky. if you made sushi with thai/indian rice, it would FALL APART.

i also read a review about someone complaining how "dirty" it is. what do people expect. you're eating raw fish. no one rolls sushi with gloves. sometimes the plates aren't as clean as you want them to be, but no harm done yet.

Also, order the volcano roll. best roll there.. in my opinion. and it is BYOB.

This place is your quintessential hole in the wall:  it has about eight seats, you sit pretty much elbow-to-elbow with either a stranger or your date, and you're there because you've heard great things about the food.  Sushi here is really fresh - at least, the yellowtail, salmon, and tuna that I had here were.  The unagi here is surprisingly good (I hate unagi), and there are some pretty funky mixes that the chef has invented.  Prices are nothing ridiculous, but also not cheap.

I would definitely return to this place, if I had the time to wait in line; the sushi was very fresh, uncharacteristic of most of the other sushi places that I have tried in the Bay Area.  What I liked most about the restaurant was its no-frills attitude.  The restaurant is not fancy, and I think there are just about two people running the operation.  The food is not extraordinarily fancy - you don't have the tempura shrimp with the albacore, tuna, and avocado with cucumber, egg, and whatever else the chef's got in the kitchen.  It's simple, it tastes good together, and it's not over the top.

If this place sounds like a place you'd like to try, you should go soon, as I've heard that the chef is thinking about retiring soon.

This little quaint sushi restaurant is fantastic! I love the idea of the tiny restaurant: good sushi quick and fast .. nothing more, nothing less!

The rolls here are good! He works so quickly and the place is usually packed (HA! packed.. the most it can fit is 6 people so that gives you an idea of what I mean)..

Come here for quality sushi when you're on the go or just taking a stroll around Old Town Los Gatos since it's a lovely area.

This place is so yummy! Great place to go if you like sushi or sashima.  I've never tried their rolls, so I can't comment on those.  The fish is quite fresh and the pieces are big.  They have a great sushi lunch special for $15.95.  You can't get quality sushi that cheap anywhere else.

This place is tiny though.  I think it seats 8 - 10 around a bar.  Either go early or go late.  Prime time lunch time you'll be waiting out the door.

And it's in a great neighborhood.  You can walk around before or after your delicious meal.

Either I had a REALLY bad day or....that guy was feeding me left overs because he thought I was a newb to sushi.

I got really big sashimi pieces but they were SO dry, chewy and very very fish tasting EWWWWW. The place also smelled pretty bad, very fishy smelling. My friend got the spider roll and the crunchy roll, the spider roll was microwaved because it was heated unaturally and we heard the microwave ding go off 2 times. WTHELL!

Yes, I cannot believe that such foul smelling fish comes form this place that is supposed to be good. I mean I had to drink 2 cups of water to swallow down the 4 pieces of nigiri because it was soo bad.

Yea, seriously a bad experience here.
Sashimi was too fishy, old, stale and just really really bad.

Porbably the WORST sushi experience I had.

this would be a great place to take a date.  small venue makes you seem like you are a part of a special, secret club, and you can be cheap and bring your own booze for a good time.  fish is delicious and reasonably priced, and you can easily spy/eavesdrop on your neighbors for entertainment.  is it weird to anyone else that this place is in the heart of downtown los gatos?  regardless, im totally coming back.

This is a so-so sushi place squeezed into a tiny location.

Everything I had was just okay. Didn't make me sick, which is good, but also wasn't memorable. I tried several types of sushi and some sashimi. Not my favorite place.

Maybe it's the fact that if you aren't lucky enough to get one of the five stools at the bar, you have to take it on the run. Talk about a "fast food nation"!

I don't know what people are thinking when they give this place five stars, but I will be brutally honest with you.  As much as I think Chef Nobo is a nice man and I like the setup, the sushi is TERRIBLE.  I have to say that I am a sushi snob.  Having eaten the best sushi in Japan and even eaten the worst sushi in Japan, I KNOW what sushi is supposed to taste like.  The worst sushi I had in Japan was still WAY better than this place.  I ordered some basic rolls like the California and some raw fish rolls as well.

Here are the problems:
-seaweed (nori): It's chewy.  It's supposed to be light and crispy.  The seaweed he uses has been sitting out too long without a container and has too much humidity.  It's NEVER supposed to be chewy.  Actually, all he needs to do is toast it a bit over a light open flame to solve the problem.  I am surprised he does not know this trick.
-rice: It's way too soft.  In fact it is as soft as rice should be when you feed it to a sick person.  Sushi rice should have a nice texture in your mouth.  It shouldn't be easy to swallow.
-rolling problems: This is something I was surprised with.  The sushi was very poorly rolled as it fell apart as soon as I picked it up.  Sushi NEVER should fall apart easily.  And he rolled it in a very weird way, not in a way that someone who learned how, but the way that he might have self taught himself.  My dad would roll sushi this way and he doesn't know how to make it.

Perks:
-Fish is fresh.
-Sushi rice taste is a good balance of vinegar and sugar.
-Chef Nobo is entertaining.

I think overall it was too expensive for the quality of the food.  I think you are better off going to Nijiya and getting "to-go" sushi.

My roommate introduced me to this place and we go back as often as we can. Yes, you might have to line up to get one of the 8 seats at the bar and the owner and sushi chef, Nobo, isn't always in a talkative mood, but it's still my favorite sushi place in the bay. Just save the really juicy gossip about your date last night for after dinner because the guy sitting in the neighboring stool is gonna be able to hear every word you say.

I recommend trying the seafood salad. Nobo puts generous pieces of everything from crab meat to red snapper to octopus in it and makes the dressing himself. The nigiri is always fresh and he's usually got some stuff off the menu hidden behind the bar, you just have to ask what he's got.

If you're looking for designer chairs and lighting, this is not the place for you. But if you want some quality sushi, you gotta give Nobo a chance to impress you.

With seating for only about eight people along a sushi bar and a menu printed backwards on a wall so that you can read it while looking on the mirror behind Nobo, Sushi on the Run doesn't look like much.  However, for fresh nigiri sushi with very large pieces of fish, this place was the best I've had in a while and the price was reasonable.

I tried many of the rolls - Big Wave Dave, Riki's RR Rocket, etc. - but found that they paled compared to the hamachi, albacore or maguro nigiri sushi.

It's as though you are having a private dinner, since there are only eight seats in the restaurant. The place is so small, i could almost picture myself in Tokyo, rather than Los Gatos.

I've never been to a place where the sushi chef will personally place a few rolls on each of your party's plates. The chef even picked out a bone from my salmon, right off my plate!  The fish was very fresh, and tasty!

My good friend who likes to eat out highly recommend this place -said they have the best sushi in the South Bay. So I went to Yelp and found  so many good 5stars reviews. Me and my girlfriend decided to drive 30mins down South to give this tiny place a try.

We arrived before 5pm as we were afraid there'll be long line. Luckily we were first and soon at 5pm anotehr 4 customer were waiting behind us, we were the 1st one to go in and able to chose seatings. Out of the 8 seats we pick the right corner all the way back in  thinking it won't be too cold. Unfortunately I'm telling you that's worst spot. I could see every single things they do in kitchen.  There're only 2 person one is the main chef and the otehr is assistant chef/ waitress. He will help us on cleaning dishes, answer the phone, collect money , fill your tea, and clean fishes...

They don't serve any grill, no alcohol license but they do have sake cups, and wine glasses so u know what to do...

Their plates I've to complain is dirty.
We ordered a salad to share and asked for plates the assistant hesitated and has to get it from the chef. The plates are are wet and with some  left over salad and dirts  from last customer(?)  I lost my appetite.

There's not much nice decoration you could see except yourself in front of the mirror and a small kitchen. We ordered Raw Shrimp Sushi and the chef would go at the back room to do the deep freid shrimp head.

Back to the food, quality is pretty good I admit. It'sgood for a quick fast meal. Shshi I rate 4stars, the fish is fresh texture is different what what we've ate elsewhere but the sushi rice is really too soft too sticky, cold, and wet. I ordered Sashimi deluex 9pieces cost $15.95. It's smallest size I've ever seen, 1.5" x 2" very pathetic. I don't understand why people said they are reasonable. Price is not cheap here. It's same as the nice beautiful decorated Japanese restaurant with waitress and more variety of food. I tried to order some scallop, clam, halibut, ika.. nothing only few type of fish.

The sushi here is awesome Hamachi, Salmon, Tuna are a must . The roll we tried the Volcano , nothing special,  not spicy, very tiny I could put 3 in my mouth haha and rice is so sticky that its just a minus.

Overall a 3stars I might give them a 4stars if I order to go and enjoy it at home. This place do smell fishy and the seats are uncomfortable, even its been open only for 13yrs seem they never fix their stuff, the sink has tapes all around... table yellowish old simply not comfy not an antique feeling so don't bring your date here.  Its like sushi in a GoodWill Store.

By the way if you order to go, it takes an hour. A call in around 5:30pm  will take 1 hr to pick up even there were like only 6 customers in the restaurant.

I love sushi, sushi loves me. If I did not come here with a friend who's already been here, I would've completely missed the entrance. If you're clastrophobic, do not eat here, you'll have a panic attack.

Everything was mediocre... one thing that scared me was that the one and only chef did not wear gloves. Luckily I didn't have the runs after eating Sushi on the Run, so I guess that's a good thing (add 1 star). The presentation of the sushi was not what I expected... I probably could've presented it better myself. The fish was just okay, not as fresh as most people claim it to be. I've had better sushi...

I think the best part of this whole experience was when I took pictures with the mannequin next door, boy oh boy was that fun!

I saw the mixed reviews on this place, but I definitely will be coming bacto this sushi bar.

Pros..
- Good quality sushi.
- Good portions on the nigiri.
- Good selection of custom rolls.
- Nice atmosphere (if you are sitting next to someone nice).  The place only sets about 10 people, so it is really unique.

Cons...
- No beer license.  I was craving an Asahi with my sushi, but alas.. they do not have their license.  Some regulars had come prepared by stopping by the store to pick up their beer on the way.  Next time, I might be brown-bagging my beer.  ;)

Overall, I liked it and will be coming back.  The older chef was understandably irritable when I slowed down my sushi ordering to talk with my friend. There was a line of peopleoutside waiting to come in, so be ready to eat and run... gee... I wonder if that's where they got the name from.  :)

Freshest sushi I've had in the bay area, my friend and I were eating and we watched the hamachi get delivered, cut up and served to us while we were eating.  Delicious!  A bit cramped but if you get a seat it's pretty fun, otherwise I'd order take out, just as good!

Almost everything that can be said about this place has been covered in other reviews. Small? with eight seats it aspires to being small. Dingy? Hey, in some towns this is called character.

But, if you love sushi, you need to go here and have the Salmon. The owner of the pace apparently goes and buys fresh fish twice a day. Don't smother it in a roll, just get the sashimi. It is AMAZING salmon and you owe it to yourself to try it.

Don't bother with the seat, just order to go.  See if they will let you bring food into Carrie Nations and have your dinner with a beer.

Rely, this is great sushi.
