This have become our go to sushi place in Austin. Coming from Seattle it has been tough to find a place that had consistently good sushi at reasonable prices. They have a fabulous selection of rolls and high quality, tasty sushi. We generally get two rolls: the Godzilla (absolute heaven in your mouth), the Dragon and assorted sashimi or nigiri. One time the salmon sashimi was a little disappointing, but every other time everything has been spot on.
This place a a pretty good happy hour 4-6pm M-Th so don't eat a big lunch.
I think that this might be my new favorite Sushi place in Austin. Granted I am no expert on the fishy subject but I certainly know what I like. I came here during SXSW with my brother and his wife and all 3 of us were very happy with our selection of rolls and miso soup.
The three of us shared the Caterpillar, Rainbow, & Spider Rolls. All three were delicious and unique and very reasonably priced.
Since I've gone here I have had a hankering for sushi several times a week. I've tried out other places to satisfy this but I haven't walked away so completely satisfied as I did last time I went to Sushi Nichi.
Went here for the first time recently. First went to Maru, but they were closed on Sunday night. So I fired up the iPhone, started yelping as we drove back towards downtown. Sushi Nichi popped up. We drove by, saw it was open (yet nearly empy!) and stopped by. Turns out it was a good choice.
Decor and atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but the food is surprisingly good, especially for the price. Not only is the sushi good and fresh, is presented very beautifully on the plate. The chef added a small salmon roll to our order that was really lovely to look at. Delicious, too. In fact, I ate so much I almost made myself sick!
Sushi selection is pretty good, but they're missing some of the pricier items like toro. Beer selection is pretty slim. I was kinda hoping for a towering bottle of Morimoto ale, but it was not to be found.
They also appear to have very good happy hour prices. We'll definitely be back for that.
Sure, there are definitely better sushi places (Uchi, of course; Musashino), but all in all, this is a very good *value* place for sushi.
I ate here by myself for lunch the other day and I was worried it was going to be awkward, but I was pretty comfortable there. I got the eel rice bowl and it was pretty good, nothing to write home about. The service was pretty good as well.
So, yeah... Pretty good. I don't care whether I ever go there again or not. It's just that kind of place. *shrug*
Being a long-term fan of Momoko's, I finally ventured in next door and I was surprised at how good it was! The prices are more than reasonable, service is good, and they have a lot to choose from. It's certainly not Uchi, but it does the trick (especially for the price).
Be warned - $10 minimum on credit cards, I didn't quite spend that much, and they let me skate by.
I would venture to say that we just had a $100+ meal and paid roughly only $65. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!, you ask. Do you know somebody? Did they cut you a deal because you're so damn cute? I wish. No, their prices are just incredibly low. In all honesty, the low prices made me a bit skeptical - and even more so when I saw a very white, very blonde-haired boy in a sushi chefs outfit, behind the sushi bar, MAKING SUSHI?? WTF? What gives?
Does the chef lick the fish before he makes the rolls? Does he get other restaurants' leftovers and then flavor it with his armpit hair? Something must be... umm, *fishy* here, pun intended.
I'm glad to report my skepticism was completely misplaced. The rolls were delicious and imaginatively created. The fish was fresh and the flavors were impeccably paired - The Hawaiian Roll, for instance, is two kinds of beautiful fresh tuna, fresher than fresh avocado, cucumber and mango wrapped in a soy sesame wrap (not seaweed), and drizzled with a sweet miso glaze. And the Beautiful Roll was... even more beautiful in my belly. The Hot Rock, a tempura roll, was one of the most amazing things I've put in my mouth since moving to Austin back in September - and I've put A LOT of things in my mouth since then.
I will definitely be back. Over and over and OVER again.
The only thing that could possibly make this place THE MOST amazing restaurant in Austin is if they were to add delivery. Well that and knowing a real live traditional volcano roll is actually much more delicious than whatever it is they are calling a volcano roll... but that's my only crit.
Dudes, I vote yes. If you're heading over to try it out let me know and I'm there. Seriously. Anytime.
This place is so-so. If you are in West Campus and don't feel like driving downtown, it's not a terrible choice. For the atmosphere and quality of the food, I expected our bill to be a lower. If I am in the mood for semi-affordable sushi I'd choose the Kyoto sushi happy hour downtown.
Perfect. The food reminded me of Uchi at a fraction of the price. Sure, not the most romantic or quiet, but delicious. For vegetarians, I recommend the veggie and tofu tempura rolls and the agedashi tofu (minus fish flakes). Add a seaweed salad or miso and you have good quality sushi for less than $20. My boyfried had a lunch bento box and found it to be fresh and plentiful.
I've been here at least 10 times and have never had a bad experience. Happy hour for sushi or lunch specials for non-sushi (chicken teriyaki or chicken katsu for me) are the best bang for your buck.
I like this place a lot more than maru, which i also rated a 2, but there is a lack of precision in a five star rating system, because it is not as good as musashino or sushi sake which i rated a 3.
Regardless, this place is decent. The food isn't very good, but it's fairly cheap. The people who run it are pretty nice. It's an alright place to grab lunch at if you work near UT, but I wouldn't take a date here.
Looking for Sushi near the UT drag, look no further. Sushi Nichi Express is located right next to Momoko's Bubble Tea. Its pretty affordable for Sushi especially for Austin. While your not going to find fancy/trendy rolls - this is a great mom and pop place - funny it seems to be decorated with Ikea furniture - so you know the cost savings are passed on... You can get Chirashi for 8.95$ - way cheaper than 18$ at other places. Also since Momoko is Sushi Nichi's sister store - you can order from Momoko's extensive tea and bubble tea menu. A
