Seattle, WA
Their portion size and convenience can't be beat. They are extremely fast in preparing food and overall their sushi is good. I'm a big fan of calling in my order on my way home and having it ready when I get there, in about 10 minutes.
My only gripe would be that sometimes the rice tastes a little stale and they are pretty stingy on the soy sauce packets.
Despite that, I will continue to go to Sushi Maki. Their combo #1 (California roll, spicy tuna roll and miso soup) is the best sushi deal in town at around $10. -
Review from Annie L.
I've lived on Capitol Hill for over ten years and almost four years living two blocks from Sushi Maki. It never crossed my mind to try it out, but filed it under "places I'll eventually try when I can't make a decision on where to eat".
But you know that file is hardly ever visited when you're actually trying to decide where to eat, but can't remember what you filed under this list. Except this past Sunday. Miraculously, my poor shot term memory came back to live for a split second.
I'd say their sushi is not terrible. It's a fine balance between Umi (but you're too lazy to get dress up and spend $$$) and Sushiland/Blue C Sushi (aka I want sushi but I'm lazy and hungry NOW).
Back to "places I'll eventually try again when I can't make a decision on where to eat". -
Review from Glory H.
The people who work here are super friendly and fast.
They are close to my house and relatively inexpensive.
But...
the rice was way to sticky, the fish all tasted exactly the same. Each different roll I ordered tasted exactly alike and one of them was supposed to have garlic sauce so it should have tasted a bit different. And I really wanted an unagi roll, but everyone of them had cream cheese or asparagus or both. I have never been a fan of the cream cheese element in rolls. I am not much of a California style roll eater either, but my husband is so I ordered him a spicy roll... which was not spicy. Also ordered him a smoked salmon roll... didn't taste it in any of the rolls. I'm not sure what kind of wasabi they give you but it was really lacking in "fire". I also prefer non-pink ginger.
I will probably go again just because it is so close and a flat walk... but it is not on my list of great sushi places. -
Review from Daren D.
This is a great, tiny, well-decorated sushi shop. My salmon & avocado and tofu rolls were great; the rice was a tad too sticky for my liking. For take-out, they use the paper containers with the perforated tear-away seams for the lid. Cool.

For quick, American-style sushi, this is your place in Seattle. I'd recommend getting take-out, though, since there are only about five stools in the place and it's VERY small. The selection of rolls is vast, the fish is incredibly fresh (as it should be in Seattle), and the rolls expertly prepared. Just a word to the wise -- their rolls are HUGE! So in many ways, it's cheap for what you get. The service is very good as well. I wish I could tell you which rolls I enjoyed the most, but honestly, my boyfriend and I sampled quite a few of them and everything was on point.
It's a good thing I don't live in Seattle or I'd find myself in there often. -

3.5 stars
Tiny little place with good, decent-sized, fresh sushi rolls that are inexpensive and hit the spot!
Roll rating out of 5:
Geisha Roll: 3
Chef's Special: 5
Spicy Albacore: 4
Volcano: 4
Beef Bibimbap: 2 - That's what I get for ordering beef at a sushi place!
Eating outside was actually really fun and added to the experience. Would recommend this place if you just want good sushi without all the frills.Listed in: Seattle Eats

I've eaten at most Sushi places on the hill in the 4 years that I've lived here and I have to say Sushi Maki is definately one of my favorite spots on the hill. Their quality is consistent and nobody beats their serving size. They are quite cheap for the quality and quantity.
Pros: Consistent quality, large quantity, cute little hole in the wall place (it's literally a hole in the wall), outdoor seating for about 4 people is fun when it's not raining but this is mainly a take out place, menu has a decent selection of items.
Cons: Not a group place, no restroom.
I like their Dragon roll and the NY roll (raw). -

Tiny little place but the sushi is good! They have an interesting menu and they are super fast and friendly. Prices seem fair but you might get thinner pieces of fish than you are used to...

Seattle, WA
The biggest surprise of all is that it literally is a hole-in-the-wall type of spot. I stand by this; the smallest sushi joint in all Seattle with marvelously tender sushi!
4 stools and two narrow counters make for the kitsch appeal of its niche in Capitol Hill. The chefs are right on hand to order and quickly get the meal going. There was a huge awkwardness of having them stand right there while trying to have a conversation without feeling them linger over you. (hint: keep the details at home).
All the rolls were tasty and topped with fresh sashimi or roe. YUM! I also recommend splurging on any of the fresh sashimi, the yellowtail came in huge slices and so tender.
Excellent for the value! -

Quaint little sushi house. Has seats outside for two 3 tops.
NY special is just awesome.
8 bucks for a roll, and worth it. The chef never says anything but the workers are really nice. -
Review from Calvin Y.
There's something slightly charming about eating sushi outside on the sidewalk next to an idle car, but at the same time I'm not too crazy about petroleum-garnished sushi. This is definitely a take out only location.
We came by for lunch and I ordered their Shrimp Tempura Roll + California Roll + Inari Combo set. For $12, the lunch special contained really big rolls with a lot of food (soup and lots of rice!) -- alas it was bland.Listed in: CAPITOL Hill

We had dinner here in early September on a friend's recommendation. It was good. Not great. This is Americanized sushi, which a lot of folks like. My son, for example, loved the chef's special combo roll he ordered, which had just about every type of fish and crustacean you can imagine, some of it tempura.
I had salmon and avocado rolls with ginger. The salmon was decent quality, not old, but the avocado was unripe and hard. And there was a little too much rice on the roll in proportion to the innards. So I mostly tasted rice.
The ginger here is the pink kind, which is not my favorite. What I liked most at Sushi Maki was the chef and staff. They were friendly and helpful.
And I enjoyed eating in this tiny closet of a restaurant. Literally, it's miniscule; there are bathroom stalls larger that the eating space here. But it's decorated in a cute way, and as I said the folks are friendly, so it worked for me.
Our tab was $44, including tax and tip, no drinks. A decent value. -

The portions were great, I was delightfully surprised at the presentation in the take-away boxes. The spicy items actually were.
$4-8 rolls!!! At these prices it doesn't matter that they don't take credit.
To write more would be repeating what has already been posted.
I will be back (I don't know why it took so long to get here).
You should eat here too. -

It is with great sadness that I must give Sushi Maki a three. I almost gave them a two, but I couldn't do it. Its because their quality has gone way down. When I first moved here and found this place, it helped me get through my first Seattle winter. It was my favorite. I think I almost got mercury poisoning. They I stopped going for no reason for 6 months. Went back recently and the quality is not good.
Their prices in the beginning were so ridiculously low, I could see how they needed to increase their prices. But two of us used to eat for about $25-30, and last few times its been over $40. Big jump, and with the coordinating drop in quality, its kind if hard to stomach.
But now they take credit cards!
Sadly, we've taken this out of the regular rotation. I'm going to keep tracking Yelp an see if they improve.
Oh, and once we ordered edamame, and they pulled somethign out of a freezer and microwaved it. -

I had been intrigued by this place since moving to Cap Hill a year ago; last week a friend was visiting from out of town, and we happened to be walking by, famished, at lunchtime.
It was a bit cold, but we sat at one of the sidewalk tables anyway--which would be indisputably pleasant in spring/summer--clutching our paper cups of green tea. We each got a lunch special; mine came with miso, and it was all scrumptious. High points for the quality of unagi and salmon, super ripe avocado, speedy prep, and beautiful presentation on bamboo planks. We probably spent around $20, total.
We'll be back, but I gather that lunch is the best deal they offer. Consider it endorsed! -

I still like it, but three words come to mind now when I think of Sushi Maki:
Too Much Rice.
Less is more, especially when it comes to sushi. Will I continue to eat here? Probably. Will it be my first choice? Eh.
Oh and PS- like Matt said, they now take cards which plays in their favor.Listed in: Take It OUT!

Review from Nick H.
I've lived in the neighborhood for years and never been to Sushi Maki--it's a pretty small place and is easy to miss. After reading other reviews I decided it was worth a try and stopped in this evening for dinner. I ordered two rolls to go and they were enormous. The other reviewers are right: at Sushi Maki they use a ton of rice. It's too much in my opinion. As a diabetic I need to watch the carbs, and white rice is loaded with them. I ended up picking off about half the rice and throwing it away! Other than that the sushi was fresh, tender and delicious. I also appreciated that they use cardboard containers instead of styrofoam. Sushi Maki is not my favorite, but if you're in the neighborhood and crave sushi this is your best bet.
Also note that the menu images other Yelpers have uploaded are a little out of date. The prices are a bit higher, so if you order over the phone expect to pay a couple bucks more. I'd stop by and grab a menu sometime--they have a rack of them inside to the right of the door.Listed in: My Neighborhood, Miso hungry!

One heavy ass bag of sushi to go please.
That will pretty much be your order at this teeny tiny sushi bar - they have about 50-60 different rolls for you to choose from all organized neatly by cooked, raw, and spicy. The rolls are HUGE! So big that I just give up on eating them with chopsticks and use my hands. (what? I said I was at home) so I can eat them in two bites. The quality of the ingredients seemed fairly top notch, but the ends of the rolls were pretty sloppy, but if you are the type of person who complains about the ends of sushi rolls being sloppy you may want to reassess your priorities.
They do not take credit cards, which is annoying, but it's so cheap that you shouldn't have trouble scrounging enough change to buy yourself a $4 sushi roll.Listed in: Seattle Loves Asian Fusion

Review from Mr. Robot O.
Seattle, WA
Pros:
- Tasty
- Pretty OK selection of rolls (How they fit all those ingredients into their 7.3 sq. ft. restaurant is beyond me.)
- Close to (my) work
- Real Japanese people working there
- Nice sized portions
Cons:
- Lots o' rice (When a Japanese person says "too much rice" you know they mean it.)
- The box they were using to stack stuff on near the door was very clearly marked as Rice Flavored Grain Vinegar. Grain vinegar? Not authentic... it DID have a very rice-like flavor though.
Possibly pro OR con, depending on your bladder size:
- No bathrooms
I think the three people working here yesterday grew up with my dad. His motto was: no speaking while preparing food. And they followed that shit to the T. Kinda weirded me out with all the silence between the four of us, but also made me feel at home.
But damn, I REALLY had to pee. -

Sushi Maki is where I go,
to fulfill my cravings for the Candy of the Sea.
Please Bring only Cash on hand,
but for those who forget there is an ATM across the street.
Everything is so fresh, So tasty & delish =P
So for less than $15.00 total, I'm really content with their Sushi Combo of (5) pieces of Sushi with Spicy Tuna Rolls & (2) extra pieces of Salmon Nigiri...also a cup of Hot green tea to sip on my way home.
Sushi Maki is one of the best places for take out Sushi =)Listed in: Sushi must be on the List!

YELP READERS - If you eat at one place for sushi, in Seattle, THIS PLACE MUST BE IT!!! I am floored by how awesome this place is!
My boyfriend and I just returned from eating dinner there. This place is literally a hole in the wall. They have about 4 stools, and we ate there instead of doing take-out, but it seems take-out is what they mainly do.
The owners are extremely nice and inviting. They probably silently laughed at us ordering all these different sushi types, but that's the difficulty with sushi - you NEVER KNOW how much you're gonna get for the price. Don't you HATE THAT about SUSHI? I love sushi, but it's always either order too little or too much? That's why I'm tellin ya'll, 2 orders is enough for 2 people, maybe 3 at the most!
Well let me tell you, we EASILY had enough sushi for 4 PEOPLE, and there were 2 of us. The chef informed us he had some to-go boxes behind the counter, before we even asked for them! hahaha He said we had ordered a lot of food, and teased us about it, but now we know - the portion sizes are HUGE! For one order sushi, you'll easily get at least 6 rolls, for anywhere for $4.95-$7. The chef said that normally, 2 orders is enough for 2 people, unlike many other sushi places in Seattle. We desperately tried to think of who we could call of our friends, who live on the hill, to help us eat all this leftover sushi, but unfortunately, most of our friends happen to be out of town this weekend!
Seriously though, they have UBER fast service, very kind and inviting, AMAZING prices, and DELICIOUS sushi!
I've found my NEW FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT in Seattle, and I'm a solid and devoted dinner fan now to Sushi Maki!
Suggested Menu Items:
* Sake Roll - salmon, cream cheese and avocado
* Tempura Roll - fried shrimp, crab meat, avocado, cucumber, gobo, topped with masago (and also had red onions in it, which I hadn't seen before in sushi)
* Mexican Roll - spicy crab, shrimp, cucumber, avocado
* Seattle Special - asparagus, cucumber, avocado, topped with salmon, tuna, yellowtail
* California Roll - crab meat, cucumber, avocado
Also, CASH ONLY, so make sure to bring those bills! :) -
Review from Nina N.
So I was on a drive to visit my girlfriend at winner's circle, and thought to get some food at city market. I then remembered her telling me that I should try out sushi maki if I wanted that fast food sushi but super sized!! To me that didn't sound that appetizing, but I thought to myself why not try it out if it's huge right?
bang for my buck? why not..
So instead of going into city market I moseyed on down to sushi maki, and I can not explain how embarrassed I was to find out they didn't take credit cards, and cash only!!! so embarrassed ...... So I did what most people would do and did the walk of shame towards my car to drive off in utter humiliation. But then I remembered I had some cash in my center console and it was enough for two rolls and tip!! hooraaahhh!!!!!!
So I came back in and just giggled my whole ordered, and the sushi chefs just said that I came back so fast, and did I rob someone for it? lol...so anyways, they helped me order my sushi, and made me two rolls I would like!!! one with spicy salmon with more salmon, and more salmon!!! delicious!!!!! and one shrimp tempura roll, made simple and easy!! I will be dining again, and maybe next time I'll have enough cash to order more than just two rolls!!! I loved it here, and the service was so great!! Made me laugh the whole time, btw there isn't any places to dine in, or walk so just order and go!!! To go orders are welcomed.
fyi : one of the sushi chefs looks like that guy on heroes kekkeke -
Review from Hannah L.
Are you in kind of a hurry? Want to eat sushi at home? Like fresh, huge rolls whose prices are a great value for the size and quality?
Then this is a spot for you to check out. Quick, simple, and fresh. The menu has a good selection of varied rolls to choose from, as well as a smaller selection of sashimi. We tried two of the rolls, a little worried at first that they seemed pricey. But once we got home and opened the box, we realized why the prices were a bit higher: the rolls were huge.
For me, the sashimi whore, there was too much rice and not quite enough fish or avocado. Or excitement in my mouth, for that matter. But for efficient sushi that's fresh, this works! -

Take Out only, otherwise you'll have the staff listening in on your every word. (there is 1 small table outside)
The place is TINY, it's like the IKEA blew up in there--covered in decorations.
Sushi is tasty & the size is, as everyone has said, big! Grab a take-out menu and call in, especially around dinner time.. maybe it's all these yelp reviews making it so popular.

I know the rolls here are huge. I've read the reviews and I've eaten here many many times, so why is that I keep ordering too much? I blame the other sushi joints. I've been trained by them to order at least two or three rolls, but here, three rolls could last for two meals.
Unlike their rolls, this place is tiny. It's best that you call your order in and go home to enjoy the sushi. -

8 pieces of sushi. I'm full.
*after posting this review, a certain yelper called me a wuss.
I forced myself to revisit the sad, half-empty Styrofoam box and picked some pieces of shrimp off the Ebi Special (California roll topped with shrimp and masago).
Now I'm disgustingly full. -

As promised in my first review, I returned to try something different. As with my first visit, I came to Yelp first to scope out the menu and decide what I wanted to order.
Please don't give me too much grief for what comes next.
In past visits to the Sushi Maki page, I always wondered why Matt and Sheena had each posted two copies of the menu. Apparently their clever labeling of "menu page 1" and "menu page 2" didn't quite sink in until the other night. Imagine my surprise when I finally opened page 2 of the menu. I was like a kid in a candy store, only the candy store had just reopened from being remodeled and now it was 3x as large.
There's some awesome stuff on page 2 of the menu, including... spicy maki! Although I know it's an Americanized twist, I do love me some spicy with my sushi. The Oishi did not disappoint, and I think I've found a favorite. But really, how can you go wrong with a name that means delicious? "Would you like some delicious?" "Um, yes please." I was a fan of the mushroom & masago garnish... very cute, if not overwhelmed by the monstrosity underneath it.
I still take issue with the (baby) shrimp and the inability to get the full experience of one piece in one bite. Though the latter is not for lack of trying... :)
I may have found a new favorite sushi spot on the hill. It's about time.
Oh, and they take credit cards now as well. Visa & MC. No more ATM stops before picking up your order.Listed in: Sam's Spectacular Sushi Search, My Haunts on Capitol Hill

Five stars if you want takeout sushi - this is definitely not a sit-down restaurant. But if you want some incredibly cheap, delicious takeout sushi, this is the place.
The rolls and nigiri are HUGE, as lots of people have mentioned here. Everything I've had has been great. Last weekend we ordered sushi for what we thought would serve 6 people ($20/person, seems reasonable, right?). Except really, we ordered enough sushi for 12 people. Oops. Leftover sushi? Is that safe?
Seriously, this place is so good. I'm never getting takeout from Hana or Aoki again.
And bring cash! (No credit cards here.) -

3.5 stars for the food and another half star for the big rolls. This place is definitely not for the sushi snobs but if you're looking for cheap Americanized sushi, you won't go wrong here. Tons of variety of rolls and come prepared to "over-order"(it's a right of passage). And yes, Cash ONLY.

It's 6:30. I'm in charge of dinner - my boyfriend is still at work.
So I:
- walk over to Sushi Maki with $40 in cash
- give the smiling young lady behind the counter my order
- leave with more food than you would think would fit in their tiny kitchen and enough cash leftover for a bottle of wine.
It's 7:15. We're both home now. We have a delicious meal and a happy evening. Thank you for a wonderful to-go experience, Sushi Maki. -

When I lived in a far away town, every week I would go with my coworkers to a tiny stall in a nearby fish market to get lunch from Sushi Andy. For about $12, we walked out with hefty Styrofoam containers stuffed with generous portions of sushi.
After much searching, I stumbled upon my very own Sushi Andy here in Seattle.
Sushi Maki is essentially take-out only. Its location is so small, I'm surprised they haven't tried to turn it into a $150,000 condo. There is room for two people to sit in the back, but they may be jostled by incoming people. There isn't even a restroom for diners to use.
Nevertheless, the ample kitchen area churns out "101" varieties of sushi, all described on the dizzyingly long menu. (Number 101 is "create your own roll.") After staring at this menu for an awkwardly long time, I decided on a combination of spicy tuna rolls and five pieces of nigiri sushi. For $10 plus tax, I got eight large rolls of tuna muddled with Sriracha and nigiri pieces of salmon, shrimp, tuna, whitefish, and yellowtail. It was the most satisfying $10 worth of sushi I've had in Seattle. The raw fish pieces were so big I couldn't eat them in one bite like I usually can. The quality was very good and the price is hard to beat.
The place is cash only for now. The menu is perhaps the most frustrating thing about Sushi Maki. I don't mind when a sushi restaurant adds its own inventive rolls to the menu, but of the 100 items on the menu at least 50 are unique to Sushi Maki. What's more, sushi-ya staples like octopus and squid don't appear on their own. For sushi lovers who know what they want, it seems unusual to be asked to go "off-menu" to get what is listed on those colorful sushi cheat-sheets you see at many Japanese restaurants -- including Sushi Maki!
The quality of the fish is good and the size of the rolls is excellent. (Next time I have to try the spider roll -- it's so huge I'd need a knife and fork.) I'm only docking them a star for their overcomplicated menu that seems to force all order of combinations on people looking for simple sushi fare.
UPDATE: I tried the spider roll and I was not impressed The soft-shell crab was too small, leaving the regular crabmeat (possibly imitation crabmeat) to dominate the flavor. The salmon nigiri sushi I ordered more than made up for it, though. -

3 reasons to go:
1. Wild caught fish, NOT farm raised like so many [upscale] sushi places.
2. Delicious and amazing portions!
3. They're always effecient and friendly there.
What more could you possible want?
Maybe if they took cards, but it's a very small business and cash only makes more sense.Listed in: Bitch has gotta eat!

Damn you all, I wish I had read all the reviews before I went here for the first time last week. I ordered too much food. Yeah yeah, you can all say it... "I told you so". So ill say it to. If you go here, start with one roll and access your appitite. The rolls are easly twice the size as any other sushi restaurant in the country.
So far this is the best take out/no frills sushi ive had in Seattle. The place is cute, the menu is huge 100+ rolls and the place is no bigger than the size of a king size bed.
The best table.... haha ok the only table, in the house is outside under the tree. The wooden board that the sushi is served on, the bamboo chopsticks, the ceramic tea cup and the shade of the tree all make you feel like you are perched on the hill side in Japan on a sunny day. But soon enough that all gets spoiled as the trash truck plows down the street that your sitting at the edge of and the bus full of joy riding homeless people pass you.
None the less, this is a must place for sushi to go, or for a fast lunch if you work in the neighborhood. The fish is fresh, there is something on the menu for everyone, the menu is creative, and the interior is adorable. -

If I am correct the word 'maki' means volume in English. I think this place is trying to warn you that your stomach better be able to expand to a large volume to hold the huge rolls this place is putting out. They also have a large volume of Sushi to choose from, and it tastes good too. Tried the Geisha roll; salmon, shrimp, masago, avocado, cucumber, scallion, topped with eel and avocado. Fantastic! Also had the Yellow Tail special, also good but the yellow tail was different than what I am used to. I love it when they give you some lemon slices with the yellow tail, nice touch. Only thing not voluminous is their eating area of course, best plan to take out. Oh, and BRING CASH, no cards.
My GF has put up the challenge that she can eat 4 of these monster rolls in one sitting, will update the posting with the results, and possibly some pictures as evidence. She loves her sushi, but she may have meet her match with Sushi Maki. -

Claustrophobics steer clear, everyone else... come on in!
If you live anywhere near the hill and need a quick, substantial and inexpensive sushi fix - look no further. Sushi Maki serves up a huge variety of sushi (much more selection than most full-sized sushi restaurants) with prices that will make you smile. Most rolls are in the $6 - $8 range and considering how large they are it's a fantastic deal. It's take-out only, no seating and standing room only so calling in your order ahead of time is highly recommended.
I do have to say I let out an audible giggle when as I was waiting for my last order I looked around, up and down and found at least 4 or 5 closed circuit video cameras keeping tabs on the 12 ft. x 6 ft. space.
The only thing keeping me from giving the little closet 5 stars is the cash only payment and I can't believe I'm whining about this but the rolls take me 2 messy bites to eat.
If you're going on convenience, price, sushi quality and selection this tiny little gem is 5+ stars in my book!
Hints and Tips:
1. Call and order ahead if you have a paper menu at home.
2. Grab a menu just inside the door, it's easy to walk past it and try to squeeze up to the wall mounted one - irritating all the other closet dwellers.
3. Hot water and tea bags are located just under the wall mounted menu.
4. Take a paper menu home.
5. Bring cash! -

Maybe it's not terribly authentic, but who cares? It's DELICIOUS.
Where else can I get fresh, yummy rolls for so cheap and without having to walk more than a few blocks?
My friends and I plan to make a pit stop at Sushi Maki every week--it's so cheap you don't even feel guilty.
The only downsides--not enough to take a star away--are that the place is so tiny you can't eat in (but when it's so close, who cares?), they only take cash, and they're not open Sundays. Everything else, from the wasabi to the nigiri, is superb. -

Let me start by saying that this is a "Take-Out" Sushi place. I'm amazed at all the people complaining about the lack of seating. Are Americans really as lazy as I thought? Isn't it enough to sit on one's backside in front of a computer all day long, five days a week?
Yes, the rolls are big and Yes, they use a lot of rice but so what?
The food is still yummy and you can't beat the price and the convenient location away from the hustle and bustle of Broadway (the land of no available parking).

Thank goodness I found Sushi Maki! Thanks yelpers! 101 delicious rolls and a few pieces of nigiri make Sushi Maki a true find.
Its a wee bit hard to find (mostly because it is so small) but worth the challenge! As others have said the space sits six (maybe) very petite people. There is also a small waiting area outside (with IKEA table and chairs) which will come in handy this summer!
Perhaps what impressed me the most about Sushi Maki is the incredible use of space! They should be on Oprah or something - it really is out of this world. Such small spaced used so well. I think I spent the time waiting (about five minutes) staring at the walls being amazed by the creativity!
My two rolls were about $11 - very reasonable for the quality and creativity of the rolls. Parking is a bit of a challenge - but its worth it!Listed in: Sushi, Sushi, Sushi!
