We were a party of four on a friday night. We didn't have a problem getting a table around 7pm.
We were sat upstairs and had a good meal. Its a bit loud, with the DJ, but it beat the two cheesy local irish bars we hit up after dinner.
Prices are average for the area and portions.
The Sushi Lounge is the one place I've been recommended to go to more than Hawaii, Barbados, and every other sunny place in the world. Apparently moving to Hoboken means you have to go there and automatically love it.
Well, I didn't. Maybe it was the overpriced food? Maybe it was the just-a-little-better-than-delivery-that-will-cost- you-a-quarter-of-the-price food?
Actually, it was that, plus the absolutely awful mojito. It definitely used granulated sugar instead of simple syrup. My cat knows to use simple syrup. If I told my cat to make me a damn mojito right now she'd get up and mix some simple syrup and muddle some mint and mix it with some rum.
Oh, that's right. Rum. Not COCONUT RUM as these damned people decided they wanted to make a 'classic' mojito with. I'll tell you what goes really well with coconut.
COCONUTS.
NOT MOJITOS.
So, people who are going to recommend other people go to the Sushi Lounge: STOP IT. It's overpriced and it's just not that good.
I love a good roll, and this place has them... I've been to this one and the one in Morristown, never been let down with the rolls... other then that its more of a 3 star type place...
They do pump the loud music, which can be a little much, if your going for dinner and not for the lounge feel... but is named Sushi LOUNGE after all...
My wife and I had our first date at the Sushi Lounge. It's located very close by, so we drop by often. The sushi is great, and the rolls are really our favorite around. We occasionally go for the sashimi rock, which has a delightful presentation and very good selection of several fresh fish for a very reasonable price.
We are also a big fan of the sake bombs here. They are kind of girly drinks, but really good. No one can resist. Also, Sushi Lounge offers a great 30% off early dinner discount on sushi and other specials each weeknight.
Sushi Lounge is a great date place, not too noisy, modern, dark and romantic. So make a date and check it out!
A few years back had some sushi that wasn't so fresh, so I stayed away for a number of years. The last few years I've had nothing but good experiences. Their sushi is fresh and tasty.
This place has the cool ambience, and pretty wait staff, but I come for the sushi.
I would consider giving them 5 stars, but I've given out too many lately, and you can get great sushi up the street at Sushi House for less.
Been here a few times. The sushi is better at Robongi - but it's a good place if you want a loud bar sushi vibe rather than a restaurant. Definitely can't have a quiet conversation there. Sushi was good and some interesting combinations - but they do have some weird ones (chicken?).
I will not go back here after a bad experience for a friend's brithday dinner with a group of 8.
We had reservations for 7PM for 8 people. Upon being seated, we were courtly told, "You MUST finish and be out of here by 9PM because we have another party reserved for then for this table." EXCUSE ME???? Let's just say that we made sure that we stayed until 9PM on the dot even though we didn't need that much time.
The food is pretty good sushi and has a nice atmosphere.
I would never return to this restaurant (Hoboken location) or spend money at any of their other locations. I was part of a large group celebrating a birthday that spent hundreds on dinner and drinks. The server charged someone in the group twice; once for their portion and then for the entire bill! A very generous tip was left for this server and cash on top of that. Server did not advise customer that they were overcharged (owner confirmed that when this happens a receipt should be given to customer).
Felt very bad for this person as they were very understanding and even commented favorably about the server that night on the restaurant's website and all along in calls to Manager and conversation with owner; yet when the restaurant was called after a bank card was frozen and overdraft fees started coming in; they encountered a rude server, Joyce. The Manager, who eventually apologized for the rude server, did not admit to their error until it was too late. Other misstatements happened after that initial call - all causing much stress and no satisfaction in having matter resolved.
A phone call was subsequently made to the owner followed by a certified letter expressing disappointment in how the entire matter was handled - including that an important check to a local charity that this person was involved in - bounced due to the restaurant's error. Remember, the overcharges amounted to several hundred dollars.
The owner promised to discuss with his restaurant personnel and return the customer's call and NEVER CALLED BACK!
We can spend our hard-earned money elsewhere! Needless to say, none of us will ever go back!
Good sushi...a little more modern and hip than I usually like my sushi joints, but sitting outside (away from the cool folks), it was quite enjoyable.
I'm a California native and have been treated to some of the best sushi available and was really sad when I moved to the wast coast and say the dinky array of sushi houses. Sushi Lounge made me feel like I was right at thome in LA the sushi is great the music is amazing and I love hanging at the bar drinking Sake and eating Mochis. Try the Optomistic Roll with the Green Sauce. The Gyoza is good and they usded to have Yakitori that was delicious. My drink of choice is The Peach Tea its an bar drink that taste just like Snapple Peach Tea.
Love this place! Always excellent food and drinks. The wait staff is friendly and fast. If you're not into DJ dining music, then don't come because those who dine there love the scene entirely...well, some only come for the food and choose to sit in their outdoor seating area. It's sexy and small, and well worth the dinner prices, though you can find great deals almost nightly.
the only thing that sets this apart from other sushi places is the atmosphere. my friend treated me to this place after a spa day we had and i might say the sushi is simply ah-mazing! my favorites are Red Hot and Oreintal. and i hear their drinks are good but i did not have one myself. i also love the atmosphere, the music, and the waiters give their suggestions which i love in a resturaunt. it shows that the waiter not only works thier but can actually vouch for what they represent. and if you go between lunch hours everything is half price. (2:00-5 or 4:00 im not exactly sure of the times)
A dark, noise-filled location safely hides any conversation you really want to have with anyone - although the outdoor seating in the summer is nice, and you can glimpse the city from your seats.
Overall, the sushi is unremarkable, priced a bit high ($7 for an eel/cucumber roll that I could have gotten for $5 at the local Precious) although fresh. Salad was ginger-covered, a nice tang to the dressing, but the lettuce wasn't quite the freshest-tasting, a little like being in the fridge too long.
Overall not bad, but a better bet - hop the PATH into the city and take on the delights of St. Marks off the 9th St PATH (and across to 3rd Av).
Excellent food...but waaaaaaay to loud to have a conversation, and trying to hard to be "cool". A bit on the pricey side, but very fresh.
Ok sushi - best in Hudson County if that counts.
Must get: White Tuna Tataki
Don't like Sushi but love the sake....
I stopped by this quaint little spot over the weekend and was surprised by the nice decor and DJ spinning great lounge music -- definitely not what I thought it was going to be. Their martini menu is great and they're half price on Tuesdays -- check it out!
The best sushi I've had in Hoboken (or New Jersey for that matter) yet. There are some inventive rolls here with non-traditional ingredients like mango (some people consider this a sacriledge; I've embraced the trend of fruit in my sushi and damn it!, I like it), as well as the traditional hand rolls. The sushi is always fresh and well presented. Other menu items like tempura, bento boxes, and udon are standard: not bad, but nothing to write home about either.
Sushi Lounge has an ambiance that's less sushi spot and more cocktail lounge. It's dark and slightly clubby, with a slate/grey color theme. The sushi bar also doubles as a bar bar and there are specials most nights of the week (I like Martini Thursdays, where cocktails are 2-for-1). The bartender is actually pretty good, so I always have a cocktail when I'm here, and the wine list is pretty good for NJ, with a variety of reds and whites sold by the glass.
On weekends a DJ spins at a small, elevated booth. During the week, the playlist runs the gamut from acid jazz to chilled out house music. When in Hoboken and desiring something a bit more like what you'd find in NYC, Sushi Lounge is a good bet.
So far I've only been here once, but I had a really good experience and plan to return soon. My visit was a Friday aftenoon in July. We got to Sushi Lounge around 6:30 PM and were happily surprised to find out it was happy hour. All martinis and special sushi rolls were half price! Needless to say we went to town ordering. My boyfriend and I had 6 different specialty rolls, and although I couldn't tell you which ones we got they were all amazing. I also had the watermelon martini which was equally delicous. The best part: our bill came to under $50!
Hoboken is known for its strip of restaurants and bars, and Sushi lounge is a fun alternative if you want to venture off of Washington Ave. Its a dark restaurant that pumps fast music while you eat. The sushi is good- its not fall on your face amazing sushi, but its good! The best thing about this place is the atmosphere... its a fun place where you can either sit inside or outside (in the summer months). The drinks here are pretty good- we had mojitos and they were REALLY good. I think the sushi here is the best you're going to find in the area, and its one of the more upscale sushi restaurants in the area as well.
I had a booming in my head the entire time. headache?...No, a DJ playing during dinner. That sucked.
The food is always really good, but the music can be way too loud during dinner hours. I'll continue to go for the good food. (I'm no sushi buff, so I'm referring to the cooked food.) Can be pricey with apps.
Can't say I've had a bad experience, but this last saturday the booming music at 7:30pm was too much for me. My guest and I could hardly talk.
This was our convo:
Person 1: "Blah, blah"
Person 2: "What?"
Person 1: "Blah, blah."
Person 2: "What?"
Background: "BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. I'm not letting you hear anything but me. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. "
possibly some of the best sushi i've ever eaten... i have never ever had anything but a GREAT meal here, my faves, the mojito's all flavors!, the shumai, & the optimistic roll, i order lunch from here too sometimes to my office in JC they delivery pretty quick and have a good lunch menu too!
I really like this sushi place in the boken. It has a new and trendy feeling to it with a DJ spinning some good stuff in the background. My experience with the sushi has been fantastic and the service staff is usually on their A game.
The only downside is that it is a bit cramped inside and it can get really crowded on the weekend. But if you're going there to down some sake bombs with your sushi you won't even notice.
Good reliable spot. I tend to take people here for business lunches when they crave sushi. I like it!
Located close to the PATH station. Has decent sushi, I haven't been here in about a year but I hear that it's popular.
Oddly enough.. I feel like peeps try to snub sushi lounge 'cause it's a trendy spot (like all good sushi places should look like bamboo huts or something) but the fact is they have very original rolls AND interesting Japanese cuisine (they aren't just sushi)... service has always been pretty top notch. Outdoor seating (big plus). I found it to be a great spot to take friends from out of town.. they tend to be impressed with both the food and atmosphere.
Truly the sushi standard in Hoboken (and New Jersey for that matter with the addition of new Totowa and Morristown locations). New hot food menu is also delicious. Great drinks, nightly dj's and outdoor seating a huge plus. Too many copycats lately, but really, none compare. If you are looking for the best sushi in the area, don't miss this place. Oh, did I mention EYE CANDY galore?
