Review Highlights
Stumbled upon this hidden gem by accident in a weekend backpacking getaway in Chicago - and boy, was I glad! I was a little cautious at first as the place is quite tucked away, small and its deco rather unimpressive. So I just ordered a humble bowl of soba in chicken broth. Simple meal it is, but rarely have I had such meticulously prepared basic Japanese fare. The noodle was silky smooth and chewy and the broth was flavorful without much hint of MSG (i hate those stuff!). Chicken was cooked to tender, succulent chunks. After all the unauthentic fastfood-style Jap outlets I've had in US, this simple peasant dish made my evening!
More confident after the soba, I ordered the mochi dessert. I love the red bean variant. Green tea mochi was a tad too sweet for me...
Still, the attentive service well made up for any shortcoming. 5 stars and will come again!
After moving to Greektown for about 4 months, I finally got down to trying Sushi Loop.
It looks pretty unassuming, with its blinds pulled down all the time, it always looks dark. The name is sushi loop!
Anyway, after one day i peeked inside i went to read the reviews here. Looks pretty good. BF and I finally went to get dinner at Sushi Loop last night.
I ordered a bibimbap ( I have not had korean food in a while) and BF ordered spicy tuna roll, and a bunch of sushi ala carte.
The host was suuuper super nice and sweet.
The menu is really interesting, I saw jellyfish, baby ginseng root, pretty much ingredients that I don't see at other sushi restaurants. I've had jellyfish before, but not here.
I'm intrigued by the menu and would like to come again for sushi.
The price is okay, standard sushi fare. Bibimbap was okay. BF was happy with sushi but he says the rolls had too much sauce and the tuna was soggy.
They have a happy hour special, 6 sushi for $10. Maybe I'll go for that another day.
Not my favorite sushi restaurant, but its close by and its not bad.
I actually discovered Sushi Loop through an old friend who was in Chicago for a few business trips over the course of several months. He was searching for a Korean place near the Loop to cure his cold and after doing an internet found that Sushi Loop had an extensive Japanese and Korean menu.
After his first trip he was sold. He said they had the best yuk hae jang (Korean spicy beef broth soup) he had ever had. He went back again for lunch twice in that week and finally brought be along for dinner. By that time he had become great friends with the owner (and sushi chef) and his wife (the hostess/cashier/Korean chef) - both of whom are Korean. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first - I mean, as others have mentioned - it's Sushi Bar/Korean restaurant in the middle of Greektown. We sat at a table and had the yukhaejang and bibimbap. At this point, he had ordered the same soup three days in a row. I assumed it was just his cold that was speaking to his stomach, but I was wrong. Both dishes were excellent.
After our dinner, the owner invited us to sit with him at the bar to end our evening with some sashimi, sake, and conversation. This is the true sushi bar dining experience. Getting to know the sushi chef and gladly accepting what he humbly prepares for you. All these other places that serve monster rolls in sleek/modern spaces with loud music thumping in the background are fleeting. The real way to eat sushi/sashimi is through the chef.
Although I don't get to Sushi Loop as often as I would like to, I come at least once every two months when my friend is back in town at his Chicago office. We always grab a seat at the bar and order a sashimi platter. The sashimi is cut in thick slices and presented neatly with an assortment of pickled veggies (also an authentic japanese offering). I haven't been for lunch but heard they have decent specials.
Overall, the owner's wife does a great job with the Korean food and the owner does a great job with the sashimi. I can't say anything about the rolls b/c I've never ordered them there. Service is stellar. Food is stellar. Overall dining experience is always memorable.
Open till 10:30 at night, which is quite late for this neighborhood, but good for me since I get out of class at 9pm some nights.
Went there with my boy and we went to town, ordering saba, hotate, ikura, sake, suzuki, The crazy roll, wakame salad, uni, super white tune....YUM. It was all good. The chef even came over to talk to us, and when we left, he came out to say good bye. The music was a little off, with reage and odd pop music playing, which was different then thier sub-dued interior defined. Service was great and super nice. Decently priced with sake and beer, I (we) will for sure be back.
I had a carry out brunch from Sushi Loop on last Thursday I wasn't expecting so much at first, but their service is really good, I ordered a smoke salmon and cream chess maki for my fd, and I had a tempura veggi maki, me and my fd also shared a veggie tempura appetizer, my fd like her maki and I think the appetizer, it is perfect! Everything taste good, it is kinda pricey for a lunch, but I will definitely go again for dinner with my fds~
If you are in a hurry, don't come here for your lunch break.
Very friendly service, just really really slow. Drinks and food alike. The food was good here. Not the best I've eaten but decent. This would be an ideal place to go with a client when you need lots of time to discuss something. I'll probably go back, but definitely not regularly.
I LOVE Sushi Loop. Its very authentic Korean food, and the sashimi pieces are delicious, and I eat A LOT of sashimi. The chef gives everyone 1st class treatment, and every time stopped by our table to ask how our meal was! Excellent service. Excellent food. Its tucked away, so its fairly quite, which is quite nice! My fiance and I were regulars for dinner and miss it so much now that we've moved to the North Side!
On a snowy January day, I trudged through Greektown seeking some solace from the cold and some food to fill me up. Surprisingly, I found myself looking into a small refined restaurant with Asian decor, and was curious...
Walking in, I was greeted with an "irrashiemase!" (welcome) from the chef and a gentle bow from the hostess. Sitting down, a hot towel was provided to clean and warm my hands as I skimmed the menu for what to dine on. And that evening, I had likely one of the best sushi experiences in my life, because they took me in like family.
After some conversation with both the chef and the hostess (who is his wife), I learned that they had just opened up the business this week. I fail to remember what I ordered (over four years ago), however what sticks out is the excellent conversation and great treatment I receieved.
For the next two years, I brought all my friends to Sushi Loop, showing them not only what good quality sushi should taste like, but also what its like to be treated well by the chef and hostess. Many rolls and many enjoyable meals later, I would find myself no longer within walking distance to Sushi Loop and it would ultimately no longer be as accessible as before...
Which brings us to last night... two years later, I find myself, my fiancee, and her roommate in the city nearby, and we decided we had to stop in for a good sushi meal and to see how Chef Jay and his wife Stella were doing...
From the moment I walked in, they remembered me by first name, gave me a hug, and wanted to hear how things were going in my life (married yet? how's the job?) They even remembered my girlfriend at the time (now fiancee) and gave her a hug as well. The chef joked with me and said "No more having too much fun now Derrick! You have a good girl to marry and take care of." It felt like being with family you hadn't seen in a long time. Which just made me realize how much I've missed Sushi Loop...
So sentiments aside, I do want to tell you that Sushi Loop has great quality fish, and is an excellent combination of a Korean/Japanese restaurant. In my two years there, I've tried so many different roles and eaten new things there, that I want to point out some of my favorites that really stand out:
Mountain Roll 1 and 2 - Both very innovative dishes that I have not seen elsewhere. I highly recommend it.
Ha Dup Bap - I may be partial since this is the first place I ever had Ha Dup Bap, and I really hadn't seen this dish elsewhere until about 1.5 years ago... but it's an excellent mix of rice, salad, and fish with Gochujong sauce.
Tiger Rolls - Again, a chef specialty that is phenomenal.
While I would rate the food four stars, the fifth star comes from the care that Chef Jay and Stella provide every one of their customers. I've found that Chef Jay often goes to each table and introduces himself and wants to learn each guest's name, and if you'll let him, he'll recommend different things to try based on your level of sushi experience. And as customers leave, the chef often stops what he is doing and along with his wife, walks the customer to the door to see you off. This is the treatment they offer all their customers.
Verdict: Make the trip out to Sushi Loop if you want some phenomenal customer service and some good sushi. My recent trip down memory lane only has me interested in going back again and again in the future.
Sushi Loop is a competent japanese restaurant, not the best in the City, but not the worst either. I only dined in couple of times but i do order from there quite often as i live pretty close by.
The service when i was there was good and friendly. I usually only order sashimi instead of sushi rolls as i prefer tasting the fish more than the fillers, Sushi Loop's fish is decent. Not the freshest compare to Katsu (but this comparison is pretty silly seeing how different the price point is) and not the most creative compare to some other trendier places, but definitely competent.
Aside from sashimi, i found myself ordering the salt grilled mackerel and Kalbi more these days. Not a lot of restaurants in chicago offer these 2 dishes which also delivers so that's my go to place when i just want to order in.
All in all, its a good neighborhood place, but not a destination.
Being a sushi fan (scratch that) sushiphile, I cannot pass up visiting a sushi bar, especially if it happens to be in my neck of the woods. Sushi Loop is a quaint eatery where once you walk in the door, you are immediately transported to a tranquil locale where you can decompress after a stressful morning at work and leave rejuvenated and ready for the rest of the day. The serene art and music flowing through the restaurant definitely helped ready me for the onslaught of afternoon projects.
Walking into Sushi Loop, I was immediately greeted by the hostess, who was extremely friendly and welcoming as she showed me to my seat at the sushi bar. I was also welcomed by the sushi chef as well. The staff is so welcoming, during my visit both the hostess and sushi chef welcomed another patron (I believe he was a regular) and escorted him to his table.
Unfortunately, I only had 30 minutes for lunch but was able to have two maki rolls and soup. My meal was served promptly and was great. The sushi chef even asked me halfway through my lunch how everything was. "Excellent," was what I exclaimed.
Being a resident of the West Loop, I am looking forward to my next visit to Sushi Loop and seeing the ultra-friendly staff and having the time to enjoy some delicious Japanese cuisine.
I was so excited to bring the BF to Sushi Loop for lunch. The staff is always so friendly and the lunch options are great.
The Loop Bento has been my go to staple with a nice mix of options - CA roll, tempura, rice, teriyaki entree (salmon, chicken or beef), fried tofu and a refreshing cucumber salad. I was shocked when they placed the boxes in front of us and saw that (gasp) the portions were considerably smaller! I'm not saying they were just a little smaller...they were a lot smaller! The "entree" item looked like a quarter of the portion it used to be..there were only 4 little pieces of sushi...I wonder what happened? The prices remain the same and I can only guess that maybe like many restaurants they are feeling the pinch.
Service is still good. Quality of food is ok too. Portions smaller. I'll try for one of the hot entrees next time.

The staff here is very friendly and makes everyone feel welcome.

If you have a must-have craving for a spider roll and you don't want to travel to the north side of Chicago for it, then I guess sushi loop would be your place to go, however it is not the best sushi in town. I would say far from the best sushi in town. I didn't dine in there I decided to order take out.
I had the spider roll, and spicy tuna roll, and I wasn't happy with it all. The spicy tuna had a very orange like clear color to the fish, and it was mashed up pretty well. And the mashed up orange color tuna tasted very mild and it had very little flavor. The sprider roll was al ot of rice and cucumber and little soft-shell-crab.
This place is a few blocks down from my building, and I don't think I'll be walking to that place for sushi, because it didn't leave me with a good impression.
just moved to the area, walked by this unassuming place probably 50 times before I decided to give it a try, mostly because with the blinds down, it is difficult to see how nice it really is inside.
We were warmly greeted by the chef and the staff when we came in, and then were delighted to find the happy hour specials which included 10 rolls for 10$ and half price beer.
We ate good sushi until we were happy and I was pleasantly buzzed from the 2 giant Sapporos. I will be back.
PS. of all the sushi places in the west loop that i have tried, this place had the most pleasant music, and by that, i mean there wasn't any sort of repetitive drum loop playing, that seems to be the required practice for all other local sushi places.
A good place for carryout, and a nice oasis from the sea of Greek restaurants surrounding it. (Shit, I just mixed my metaphors.)
For the vegetarian maki I've had, the ingredients used are super fresh. The avocado maki was the closest thing to perfection I've had in my mouth since...well, let's just say it involves a one-night stand I had back in 2005 and leave it at that.
The prices, though? I know there's a rice shortage, but I found $5 for a six pieces of single-vegetable maki to be a little steep. I don't like paying $12 for lunch. But it's nice to see a tiny bit of variety near my office.
Fantastic! We love sushi and growing up in Asia, I have had my fare share of good Japanese food and terrible Japanese food. Sushi Loop ranks as one of my top places in the city of Chicago (excluding suburbs).
They serve excellent, fresh, tender, tasty sashimi, and have a lot of rare varieties of fish that you cannot easily find in other Japanese restaurants. The chef is also highly skilled not only at preparing your sushi, but also at presentation. Even if you order the same selection of sushi/sashimi two times in a row, he will present them in different plates, with different arrangements. I really like that nice touch.
The chef also comes to each table to greet the customers and find out personally how the food is (I believe the Chef is also the owner). They also have a good sake selection and if you want to sample sake, you can get a flight of three glasses for just $9.
One bonus item: Although this is a Japanese restaurant, you can also get Korean dishes here - this is because the sushi Chef is actually Korean! So you can be sure that the dishes he serves up are traditional and authentic. Some people may not like traditional/authentic dishes because they may not be as "tasty", so just keep that in mind. If you ask me, you can always find food that is jazzed up with salt and MSG, so anytime I can get simple traditional cooking, I'll be the first to raise my hand.
I give this place 4 stars because they are the only sushi place in the immediate area of greek town and I need my sushi! Listen, I love greek food but I work in greektown and I just can't possibly eat greek food everyday... I have to spice things up a little. So I head over to sushi loop once a week or so for their carryout lunch special. I alternate between the mini maki mono and the sushi bento (both only $8.50). I like the loop bento and the maki mono combo is awesome but both are just too much food for me to have at lunch. And I HATE wasting sushi. The sushi chef is really nice and the staff is really friendly.
Now the sushi here isn't anything too special its about average, of course I've only ever had their lunch specials and had them carried out so I'm sure I haven't had the full experience. Its decent sushi (better than a grocery stores sushi) and with good priced lunch specials I return often because basically I have no other options and its decent sushi.
Don't let the name, location, and sign outside fool you- this is an excellent place. I consider it a workhorse sushi restaurant- not a place to be seen like some other sushi places but where you can get really good sushi at a reasonable price.
We go here consistently and are never disappointed. The chef is a great guy and treats everyone first-class. The service is great all around.
This is a great neighborhood sushi spot. I recently moved away from Chicago and I miss this place. They have the BEST dragon roll ever. They have set the bar on this and many others that I've tried have failed to come close. The sauce, the fish, the combo is perfect. The Tiger II roll is also awesome. I love a little crunch from the tempura in my rolls. I found the super white tuna roll when I ordered the sushi combo and let the chef pick the best pieces. I ordered the super white tuna every time thereafter. The clear soup is also very tasty. It became my cure-all if I was sick or hungover. But I always got it even if I was feeling well because it's such a tasty broth soup. The owners are very friendly. The owner/ chef always made a point of coming over to talk to us. This place doesn't have the "ambience" of the trendy sushi places but that is why I love it. There isn't a bar scene (although they have good wine and sake here). The dress-to-impress crowd isn't taking over. Just a friendly neighborhood joint with great sushi. And it's affordable.
My lunch experience here was okay, but far from exciting. The hostess was very warm, welcoming, and attentive (it helped that there were only a few other patrons). An immediate strike against Sushi Loop was the sad-looking salad that came along with the miso soup and consisted mostly of iceberg lettuce (at least I wasn't charged for it). The Chicken Yakisoba was a good-sized portion, and not too greasy. The ebi kyu (shimp, cucumber, and mayo) made for a decent maki roll, but I wish I had enough of an appetite to sample more. I did greatly appreciate the half-orange that was served with my check.
I'd come back again to try some of the different rolls, and politely decline the salad before it arrives.
Sushi delivery is where it's at. This is the go-to sushi delivery for the South Loop area for one reason, and one reason only - Chicken Katsu! For those that don't know, it's Japanese style fried chicken. It's pretty damn good too! My favorite part about Sushi Loop's Chicken Katsu is the slaw dressing. HOT - SIPCY HOT!
The actual sushi keeps us happy and will continue to be our number one choice for sushi until we find another Chicken Katsu in the South Loop.
Sushi in Greek town? Sure, why not...
The staff was very friendly and the mountain roll suggested by the chef was good. I forgot how much sushi costs even if its not at well known places. $91.00 for two people with no liquor is a bit pricey. I would come back but order off the menu, not the chef selection.
A great place for those of us working or living in West Loop. I have had lunch there frequently since they opened. The Bento dishes have a variety of flavors and can't be beat for the price. The few Korean entrees I have tried are pretty good, but I'm no expert on them. The sushi has always been fresh. Service has always been attentive, but I haven't seen the place very crowded.
The portions are reasonable and I always leave feeling that I was good to myself (as opposed to a downing a tasty but guilty gyros or slab of lamb).
It is so wonderful to have a great sushi restaurant close to where I work. Whenever I get my cravings for a good California roll I know I can trust Sushi Loop.
I've only been here for lunch, which is quite a deal let me tell you. They have great lunch specials. You can get a variety of rolls for under $10. They pre-make the rolls so you don't get to choose which ones you want for the lunch special, but all of the ones I had were great.
Everything is very fresh, and the service is wonderful. The restaurant is very inviting with little tables surrounding the sushi bar. The service is very good, they are attentive without being obnoxious.
I recommend Sushi Loop for anyone that is around the West Loop area. It's a nice change of pace from all the Greek food you have in the area.
Interestingly, I tried out Sushi Loop based on the positive reviews from this site. From the outside, it looks very small and almost like a fast food joint. Anyway, my impression was wrong. I would compare Sushi Loop to Naniwa or a Sai Cafe. It's a basic place w/ good competent sushi. I thought the service was extremely friendly and attentive and it's very reasonably priced. I especially enjoyed my noodle dish.
If you're looking for a casual Sushi place in the west loop, this is a good choice.
The portions are TINY. I was still hungry after eating and I always get the same thing everywhere. Sushi is always hard in Chicago, but I think there are other places with comparable food with better prices.
I have mixed feelings about this place. I really want to like it better, but here's why:
Entrees are a bit overpriced ($14 for Chicken Katsu? You can get twice as much for less than half the price at Aloha Grill) except for the Bi Bim Bap (Korean dish...) and maybe a couple others.
Sushi is average priced, I'd say. Nothing I'd make a special trip for, though. Actually I'm surprised they're still around since I first ate there nearly 4 years ago.
All in all, a place of last resort when you're in Greek Town and don't want Greek food.
ADDENDUM 4-19-08
A big group of us ordered carry out from here a couple weeks ago to eat at a friend's place. I got the Beef Donburi which was bland. I ended up adding some of my friend's Bi Bim Bap sauce on my dish to give it some flavor. Looks like the Bi Bim Bap is leading the race for most reliable, affordable, tolerable dish from this place.
Sushi in Greektown?
Yes, and it's really quite good. Sometimes, the West Loop-ers don't want Sushi Wabi or Starfish. Sometimes, all they want is good sushi at reasonable prices. Sushi Loop scores with their great lunch specials (ranging from $6.95-$15) and attentive service. My favorite lunch specials include the mini-Makimono and the beef bento box.
Personally, I find it ridiculous that sushi restaurants charge $1-2 for a bowl of miso soup. We are truly suckers for allowing that to happen too. There's no need to do any miso soup protesting at Sushi Loop because for many of the rice dishes, they'll include the miso at no charge. In addition, you get a nice little salad to start off your meal!
If you're into the rolls, Sushi Loop serves a great "name sake" roll, which includes fresh strips of salmon combined with avocado.
Did I mention the service? The people are really sweet. The sushi chef is very attentive and the servers do their best to please you. They also deliver. I've done it a couple of times with no problem.
Ironically, perhaps, the only thing I've had here that I didn't like was the sushi. (It's not terrible, mind you, but there are a lot of better places in Chicago.) The noodle dishes (Japanese and Korean), and Japanese standbys like katsu (fried pork cutlets) and teriyaki are pretty good, if a bit pricey relative to the quality. (Teriyaki chicken comes in fairly generous portions, but the beef is a small and cheap cut of meat, e.g.) I haven't tried many of the Korean entrees, but my guess is that they'd be pretty good, too. (The staff is Korean.)
Speaking of the staff: I have always been treated extraordinarily well at Sushi Loop. They seem very grateful for the repeat business. (One of the proprietors once chased me down a block and a half because I had been accidentally overcharged by a dollar fifty.)
The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but Sushi Loop has made an effort to make the ambience as nice as a low-budget storefront operation can be. The one glaring exception to this is the music -- Sushi Loop appears to have about three CDs of background music on constant rotation -- Jack Johnson, Enya, and some sort of counterfeit Getz/Gilberto bossa-nova-on-Quaaludes, and I am so thorougly tired of all three as to want to avoid dining in.
That aside, Sushi Loop is a solid choice if you (like me) live or work in Greektown and crave a change of pace from, well, Greek food.
A great place for fresh sushi and hard-to-find items. True, it skimps on decor and design, but the savings are passed on to you in reasonably priced, superior fish. Jay, owner/operator, is super-friendly. He'll come out to see if you liked your fish.
For me, I value the flavor and texture of the fish over "tradition" or "style." You can keep Kamehachi and Mirai - I'll take Sushi Loop anytime.
A sushi place smack dab in the middle of Greektown? I had to go give this place a try.
Unfortunately, my particular experience wasn't very good. It was a moderately busy night and our table didn't get any food for over an hour. Though the chef did come over and personally apologize, we received very little sympathy from our waitress.
Food was above average for your standard sushi place, very nicely presented and on the pricey side.
Due to my experience, I can't recommends this place over any of the numerous other quality sushi restaurants.
My friend just introduced me to this little hidden gem. There is not many choices for sushi in the Loop. So I was excited to find this place. Just a short little walk from the Loop over to Greektown. Yes I said Greektown. It's not a fancy place at all. Very friendly staff. The place didn't fill at all for lunch. Which I'm glad I didn't have to wait, but I don't want them to stay in business. Great sushi. I recommend the "Mountain" rolls. I haven't seen it before and it was delicious, but it's one of their pricer rolls on the menu at $14. Besides for a few specialties, most of the rolls are under $10. I can't wait to go back. You'll probably see me here once a week now getting my sushi fix.
There is better sushi not far from Sushi Loop. I was a big time supporter when they first opened, but after a while it became clear that they weren't busy enough to turn product over and the last several times I went there I was served old sashimi. The chef is very nice and friendly, but I'm afraid the quality of the food must come before the niceties of the staff.
I love this place. Low-key atmosphere lets the sushi speak for itself. I love the Mountain Roll and the fact that's it BYOB. Also, the chef always comes by to say hello to regulars and newcomers. I think the place isn't the cheapest, but sushi almost never is. The decor isn't trendy or cool, but the sushi makes up for it.
Great, friendly service. Sushi was good. I was a bit nervous pursuing sushi in Greektown, but it proved itself worthy. I still prefer the BYOB places of Lakeview and Lincoln Park, since it keeps the costs down, but this place would be a good neighborhood spot to grab sushi.
This place was absolutely amazing. We were there for a quick lunch and I've never seen such a big selection for a small restaurant. I've been craving oyster shooters and tekka don for awhile and was really happy to find that there for $3 a shot. The service was friendly and fast- though the food was so good, I blew $30/person for lunch...
Yummy sushi, AWSOME staff (seriously, the people here are the nicest I've ever met), and close to UIC and Greektown. Perfect for lunch.
Well-lit and not hip -- but if you're looking for something other than gyros by Halsted its a good stop.
i love this sushi place...yes, it is a lil bit pricey for a student like me, it was $20 just for me, for only 2 choices of maki (6 x 2) but lemme tell you..it was worth it!! they do give a lil free salad for starters and that lil salad was great too.my favorite is the tempura white flake spicy tuna. ($6.75)..and the tiger ($12.95)..the tiger was extrasuperdelicious!no joke. friendliest service ever
Just want to echo the others--crazy idea to have sushi in Greektown, but it's great if you don't like Greek food all that much and you live nearby! And the people are fabulous, the sushi is fresh and the service is excellent. It's small and intimate and comfortable--a place to keep returning to.
I have only been here once but the service was good, the sushi was fresh, and I liked that you are given hot, moist sheets at the start of the meal and an orange at the end. I would come back here if I was in Greeektown and had a major sushi craving and had the money to fund it, unfortunately this place is not cheap.
