Review from Helen C.
Sunnyvale, CA
Very small Japanese sushi restaurant. The waitress were pretty friendly and nice.
I suggest to make a reservation if want a spot because...it could be crowed it and you'll have to wait since the restaurant is so small that could only fit less than 35 more than 20 people.
The Food was amazing..i meant sashimi, especially the Hamachi sashimi- soo good it was very fresh. if you are not a sashimi eater, i dear you to try it- it taste soo good and you'll like it a lot. You wont taste the fish taste that you'll think you'll taste it.
Teriyaki Salmon...it wasn't that good. the fish was over cooked and too dry. i'm not sure if they over cooked it or it has always be like that but..i tried other sushi restaurant with teriyaki salmon, their salmon was very tender and juicy. So I was very disappoint with their teriyaki salmon
the sushi rolls- very decent. the rice are good and fish are fresh.
my favorite sushi restaurant in Cupertino. -
Review from Abby S.
With all the rave reviews, I was excited to try Sushi Kuni in Cupertino before a concert at Flint Center. According to their Yelp page, they don't take reservations so I arrived at 6 pm with the hopes of making an 8 pm show, just down the street.
As soon as I walked in I realized how small this restaurant is. And, as a result, there aren't many tables. Was greeted by a not-so-friendly lady who informed me that they weren't seating people. Period.
Say what?
I can understand if they are full right now with a wait list, but the way she said it, it seemed like they just weren't interested in filling up any tables. Apparently they do take reservations and she made me feel a tad stupid for not calling ahead to make one. So I put my name on the wait list and was the first person on there. When I asked when we would be seated, she said it would take an hour and a half.
Really?
The sushi must take FOREVER to make or they have no motivation to get people in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Either way, this wasn't going to work and our group decided to eat elsewhere. -

The fish is pretty fresh and the food is standard. A little over priced. Haven't had anything that amazing here, but it's good. I've only ever ordered the bento box and it's good, I usually get sashimi and tempura.
It's a little hard to find because in Google maps it shows up in the wrong place, had to call them to find out where they were. Small place but the people who run it are SUPER nice, customer service is always great here! -

I think this place is really nice. If I had money I would buy non-stop sushi LOL (the food is quite expensive, but their service is stupendous, which is why I give 4 stars)
I only went here once and ordered take-out. Took a short while.
Their teriyaki salmon was okay, but if you have money and eat sushi, order sushi! -
Review from Tiffie L.
I met up with my friend here for dinner after work. I was actually really surprised by this little sushi place in Cupertino - I grew up here and don't think I ever knew of Sushi Kuni until now. It's a little house-looking restaurant right next to Radio Shack off of De Anza.
While the restaurant is cute - very cozy Japanese restaurant (although the tables were a bit too close to each other), I did not think the food was all that special. I ordered the Salmon Nigiri, which was fresh. I also had the Tempura Udon. The udon noodles were pretty good, but the tempura was not as crispy as I like.
What I thought was lacking was the service. When I put in my order for the Salmon Nigiri, I requested that mine would not have wasabi between the salmon & rice. I think she misunderstood me, because mine still came with wasabi. After we were done with our meal, the place was really crowded. After giving the server our credit cards, we waited almost 15 minutes to get them back. Luckily, we were in no rush that night. -

3.5 stars
This restaurant looks like a little house that was either there first and then businesses decided to pop around them or there was a little gap and they thought it would be a good idea to put a little house in between and make it a sushi spot.
It's a small place, but fills up pretty fast.
The sushi was good and fresh, but we got about 4 rolls and our bill came out to $50!
A little too pricey for me... I'm pretty sure I won't be giving them another visit.
I can at least say I tried that place and it wasn't bad. -
Review from Whitney W.
San Francisco, CA
Went here around 7pm on a Friday night and had to wait ~15-20 minutes for seating. Not too bad, but there is no where to stand or sit as the place is not very big. Make a reservation before coming if you don't want to wait. I've been here for lunch and they have pretty reasonable/satisfying lunch special, but this review will be on the dinner experience.
Prices are on the higher end but the quality is good. I would suggest this place if you like sashimi. Since I am not a fan of raw fish, I got assorted tempura ($8) and a couple rolls and shared with my mom. My dad got a dinner special ($18, with your choice of 2 items) and he chose teriyaki chicken and sashimi (comes with rice, miso soup, and salad)
The tempura was nothing too special, fried with the right amount of batter and came out very hot, but you get only 2 shrimp and like 4 pieces of veggie (potato, pumpkin, broccoli, and zucchini). This is probably not worth the price...I would skip this unless you're craving for tempura.
The rolls I ordered are to tobiko california roll (6 pieces for $6) and dragon roll (eel, avocado, tempura prawn, ~8 pieces for $12). The California roll is made of real crab meat, but very little avacado. The dragon roll was good but the eel was cold and you will not get eel AND avacado on every piece since they are not placed evenly. The eel was good though, pretty generous pieces and delicious. The quality/ingredients used in the rolls are good, but overall they taste just okay...wasn't anything too special.
The dinner special is probably most worth its price. The teriyaki chicken was pretty standard, nothing too amazing about it, but they put bean sprouts underneath the chicken, which I ate and liked. The sashimi however was cut very thick and according to my parents (who actually ate them) they said it was very fresh and liked it very much.
Overall, a good choice if you want sashimi, but there really isn't that many choices on the menu if you are here for non-raw sushi rolls or don (rice bowls). They have Udon and soba noodles (cold noodles) on the menu as well (but I wouldn't come here to get those because there are definitely better places for noodles, rice bowls...etc) -
Review from Albert H.
Little mom and pop place next to a Radio Shack.
Fresh and flavorful, some interesting preparations, not pretentious. Service was somewhat friendly, depending on the server. The tables are very close together.
One problem we had was that we got only *one* of the several menus. Then we asked about sake ( surely there was more than "hot" and "cold" available? ) and got a sake menu. Then we asked about a wonderful grilled squid we saw someone order and got the *good* menu. Make sure you see all the options before you order - they have a lot more than you'd think. The grilled squid is good - you can get either the body or the tentacles.
In the end, it's a nice little place, but perhaps just a little more popular than it deserves to be, especially now that so many more choices have sprung up on El Camino and Castro. Certainly not the best in the area, but a solid choice ... if you can get a table. -
Review from Jennifer F.
Santa Clara, CA
There isn't anything particularly wrong with Sushi Kuni - it's just that for the price, and the long wait times I'd expect much, much better...
I've been here twice now - once for lunch, once for dinner. Granted, these are both peak times but really when do you know eat during a peak time? Both times I've had to stand like a sardine in a can right by the door, vying for a spot to sit. Tip: there is a table sign-up sheet by the door, and you can also make reservations if you're a forward thinker. We didn't realize that until the end of our 2nd visit though.
Generally I order some sort of spicy roll at sushi joints, it's my go-to dish. Spicy California Roll, Spicy Scallop Roll or Spicy Tuna Roll are my favorites. These are not a specialty at Sushi Kuni. Spicy here seems to just mean extra wasabi - that's not a A+ for my palette. Plus, like other reviewers have said, the California Roll barely has any crab on it. Me thinks not!
Another downer - soda is $2.50 a can. Does anyone else think that's a little ridiculous? I'm already paying $15 for a plate of sushi with barely any crab on the California Roll, at least let me feel like I'm getting a margin on the soda. And if you opt for just water, don't expect to have it refilled anytime soon. The joint is so popular that you have to really be a squeaky wheel if you want refills.
My husband does like eating here, but he's more adventurous when it comes to sushi and likes to get the chef's special. If you'll eat anything sushi, liking spending money for unique sushi items, don't mind a wait, and don't expect excellent service this is the place for you... -

Really beautiful, fresh sushi. High quality fish expertly cut. This is probably part of the reason the prices are a little spendy, especially for a lunch meal. I will be back but maybe by myself so I don't have to share!

Oh Yelp, you know I love you, but you built up my expectations pretty high for Sushi Kuni and I can't say that they delivered.
I came here with two other people, which is probably a good thing because the place is tiny! It's easy to miss because it's literally a little house that was turned into a restaurant. What's more, because we came right when it opened (we are eager eaters, duh), it was deserted the entire time. The staff was whatever, not rude but not exactly friendly either. Needless to say, the ambiance of a cute sushi restaurant was lacking because there was no one around.
We proceeded to order the saki make (salmon), caterpillar roll, california roll, gyzos, and vegetable tempura. None of it was bad, but "nothing to write home about" I would say. And for no one else being there, service was pretty slow. I could definitely get better sushi in a better atmosphere for a better price. 4 star average on Yelp? Not this time. -

Very good, fresh, and flavorful sushi.
A bit pricy, but you get what you pay for I guess.
This place is tiny so don't plan on coming here with more than a group of 4 -
Review from Anna V.
My life survival guide (i.e. Yelp! mobile) directed me to Sushi Kuni since I was looking for a sushi place around this area. Recently I have gotten into eating sushi and haven't really acquired a taste for it just yet ... but bit by bit, I'm starting to enjoy it more.
I easily found a seat at the restaurant at the bar and ordered agadashi tofu, hamachi nigiri, seared salmon, and salmon skin roll.
The sushi chef corrected me on my "dip" method for my salmon skin hand roll in my soy sauce and told me to just pour it directly (now I feel a bit of an idiot for not knowing), the hamachi had a slightly fishy after taste (not sure if that's just me not used to eating raw fish, or if the fish just wasn't fresh enough), and the seared salmon nigiri was my favorite but it had a slight chemical after taste from the torch. I'm unsure if that's always going to happen but it did detract a bit from the taste.
A 3.5 star restaurant. I would go again but I can't say it's the best place out there. -
Review from Mike M.
What a great find find in a sea of strip malls littering De Anza boulevard. When it comes down to it, the key to a great sushi restaurant is fresh sushi and sashimi - and Sushi Kuni hits this on the spot. We opted for the dinner combination which included regular tuna and seared tuna sashimi pieces which were quite yummy. The spicy tuna rolls were all great. The selection of sushi rolls is limited, so keep that in mind if that's your thing. Also, the service was great and pricing is reasonable. Thanks Yelp for the great find!

This is my family's go-to dinner place because my parents and sister all LOVE their kampachi kama. On a good day they have one (maybe two??) available, so get there early and TRY IT. Basically it's a miso-marinated broiled fish head that is super salty but really good. Eat it with rice. Or a lot of tea.
No but seriously, it's really good. Their fish is fresh and it's authentic. (Dont' come here if you want a super dragon Cupertino deluxe firecracker roll.)
They may miss your tea refill, but in a crowded and busy restaurant with two girls waiting tables, give 'em a break. :) -

I really hate having to give them 3 stars, but it is an honest rating, I've been waiting a long time to finally try Sushi Kuni. Reason for the wait? They are constantly packed, or closed.
So when I finally chose a day to get there early for dinner and grabbed a seat, I was stoked. I immediately ordered my japanese cuisine staple: Agedashi tofu. Their agedashi tofu is pretty satisfactory, actually better than a lot of the other places I've tried. However, the real test lies in the actual entrees and sushi we ordered.
I ordered a special dinner with beef teriyaki and salmon teriyaki. Salmon: dry. Beef teriyaki: tasteless. The teriyaki sauce was way too watery, flavorless and not nearly a sauce at all.
Ordered another staple: California roll. Ew. Dry again, not enough crab meat, overstuffed with cucumber and avocado. Where's the good stuff? I will give them credit for using real crab meat (i think). But if it tasted like this, I'd rather go get cali rolls with imitation crab meat elsewhere.
Would I come here again? Probably not.
Overall very mediocre experience. Sorry, sushi kuni. -
Review from Cindy T.
I can't believe it took me so long to discover Sushi Kuni. I've driven by this place a million times, but never noticed it since its quite tucked away and very easily missed. Don't expect crazy American style sushi rolls here because there are none. Only traditional sushi - sashimi, nigiri, maki, handrolls, chirashi, etc. I love traditional sushi because of the simplicity and the natural flavor never gets lost, so this place was perfect. I'm a huge sake fan, so I decided to order a la carte. I went with a salmon skin handroll, sake maki and 2 orders of sake nigiri. Everything was simple, yet so delicious. It's a bit on the pricey side, but well worth it. This place is very small and fills up quickly, so arrive early to avoid wait. Service is also a bit laggy because like many other Japanese restaurants, they are short staffed. No suprise there.
*Closed Sundays. -

Wow, you wouldn't be able to tell from the outside but this place has amazing sushi... the quality and freshness are solid - even during lunch time.
I'm anxious to go back and try the other items on the menu. -

I had a bad day at work, so bad that I decided to do something I never do, go spend money recklessly.
As I took my wife to Sushi Kuni, knowing the reputation of expensive yet high quality sushi. I've exactly that expectation.
I wasn't disappointed.
Pros:
Toro was awesome... fresh and... smooooooth (thanks to the fat of the fatty tuna), very nice.
Uni was done with skill. You can tell how well they clean the uni before they serve it... the taste will tell you everything... not a bit of bitterness and it was silky and smooth... that's skill!
Abalone - fresh but personally, not my favorite, it's too hard and not as tender as cooked abalone, it's just that I don't know how to appreciate it, but most importantly, it was fresh!
Cons:
It wasn't that bad, for 2 people, we were stuffed and it costs about $108 before tax. However, the service was lousy. Servers (all 3 ladies) were not very courteous, were not attentive and we have to ask for the bill 3 times. They were too casual, staying in the back chatting a lot...
All in all, I've been to Kuni a few times, mostly for lunch and didn't have sushi. I have to say it's one of the better quality (Freshness and skills) sashimi/sushi u can find in the peninsula.
Bon appetit -

this is more of a 4.5 review.
if the food continues to be this good, i'll probably boost it up to 5.
i was looking for a quick take-out option around my neighborhood and found this place on yelp.
i called in and ordered chirashi to go.
when i went to pick up the food, i was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a Japanese-run sushi shop. nothing against koreans or sushi joints but i'm more of a nigiri/sashimi guy rather than a americanized sushi rolls kind of a guy.
the ambience was cozy. no loud asian pop music here!
The food itself was very good. I got a wide variety of interesting fish pieces to try. the only odd part was that i had 2 pieces of tuna sashimi; one which was really good and one which was obviously not very fresh. i guess they're trying to even out the awesomeness.
in any case, i'm really glad i found this place. i'll have to eat at sushi bar for sure next time! -

Review from Rob C.
more of a standard type of place (not premium). deluxe nigiri $20. rice could use more vinegar. molded ok, but kinda falls apart (drier). wasabi variable. no toro, had seared salmon belly, hamachi maki, hotate, and the usual maguro, etc. sake with marinade and softer texture. not a standout on the hotate. oh, if you're looking at the soba, the nameko oroshi soba, know that it is premixed and the sauce becomes jelly like, kinda like yama-imo. wasn't a fan.
-
Review from Jennie C.
Ahhh the cold soba with tempura and the cold udon with tempura is just too darn good. The tempura is so light and perfectly fried. the noodles are super yummy, and the zaru soba sauce is perfect.
The agedashi tofu is pretty regular, but still good. Definitely coming back again for the refreshing cold noodles. -
Review from Denis S.
Tiny spot that looks like a house. Good sushi with fairly good service (though it could have been better). The fish was fresh, the rice didn't dwarf everything else, and the price was pretty good (though could have been better).
As usual I sat at the bar, but unlike most places, the sushi chefs didn't really engage much in conversation. Oh well. -

I've been coming to Sushi Kuni for a very long time (ever since I was a little kid!) and I'm still not sick of it.
My family and I always come here for lunch, because they have really good bento box specials. Though the prices have gone up since I first came here (bento boxes used to be $6!) the prices are still really good for the amount of food you get, and the fish is definitely really fresh. One of my favorite Items have always been the sashimi you get with the bento boxes. They typically give you seared white tuna (I believe...?) with the bento, and it never fails to please me.
Though Sushi Kuni gets crowded at lunch time, the food is definitely worth it and the service is impeccable. The workers are so nice, and the sushi chefs always make conversation with you. I love this place!! -

Best Tempura Roll and Sake Maki Roll I have ever had - I realize that might not be saying much since both of those rolls are pretty standard but... I think there is value is saying these were the BEST I've had nonetheless.
I went here for lunch and brought along two coworkers - they had Tekkadon and Chirashi and my friend that had the Chirashi said the octopus was amazing. All the fish tasted extremely fresh, the sushi rice was cooked perfectly, and the ginger was WHITE (for me, a true sign of a place that appreciates freshness).
The restaurant is very small and thus somewhat difficult to find - it looks like it once used to be a home and sits in a small parking lot. We arrived around 11:45 and had zero issues with parking or waiting. We were seated right away, our orders taken promptly (but without pressure), and the service was friendly.
We will definitely be back and I look forward to bringing more friends along next time. -

Went there tonight
Crowded small restaurant
We had the Teriyaki salmon
tempura
tempura udon
Seaweed salad
The food was good, I wanted a salad and they offer 2 salads for around $5-$6 - which were only side salads either iceberg lettuce or the standard seaweed each about 1/2 cup -pretty small
The rest of the meals were good size and were good as any above average Japanese place in this area
Service was quick but once you had your food, that was the last you saw of them, so tea/water refills just before we left, as we got the bill.
would try it again, but definitely not for large groups as the place is packed pretty tightly to have as many tables as can fit it the limited space -

Really, people, 4 stars?
I went there for lunch, the place looks OK, if a bit small.
The food, however, is nothing to write home about. After leaving, I made a mental note to not bother coming back.
I am the biggest sushi lover ever, and was really disappointed by the sashimi lunch options:
The tuna itself was not too bad.
The unagi, meh.
The salmon teriyaki must be one of the smallest I've ever seen in a bento box lunch combo. I left hungry.

we stopped in one night just to get a quick dinner
instead of even looking at the menu i asked if they had omakase
they did!!!
best omakase for the price i've had in the bay area so far!!!
i have yet to try a few places that are really known for their omakase so i'll have to wait to see it's better or not -
Review from Karen L.
This is a nice little sushi place where everyone can enjoy their favourites, rest assured. It can get pretty loud in here and honestly, it's almost always busy so the service is a bit slow. My mother and I both agree that they serve pretty good Japanese food though so it's pretty much worth the short wait.
Be careful though. The parking right in front of this restaurant is a good indication on exactly how long you have to stand at the door. It's a tiny place so it's hard to get in most of the time. I don't like to wait that long though so if there are like 4 people in front of me on the waiting list, I usually just leave. -

Mediocre food. It's too bad, I really wanted to like the place. It was small, cozy, comfortable lighting. Cute little place I've driven by a million times. I would never have thought to gone there without yelp.
I got a lunch combination box......it's too bad, the food was very very average and small quantities. Not as expensive as other japanese places, but definately not cheap. 10+ bucks per person at least.
Recommendations: Blah. Ho-hum. Boring, medicore, highly forgettable food. Skip. If you love japanese food..you'll feel disappointed. -

Just not the same since Steve the sushi chef left...
Rolls are not as tight, heavier on the rice now and the fish not cut as delicately. Still probably the best sushi place in Cupertino. My favorites are the rainbow roll, dragon roll and the chriashi bowl. -

Quick review- back to edit
Came here to get together with some friends in order to 'properly' say our fairwell to a good friend- of course we had to have some sushi for lunch! Came because we were recommended by a friend. The store was really nice and full of people in business attire. The waitresses and other staffs were really nice! I liked the placed already and looked forward to satiating my hunger with some sushi!! Woo. All three of us decided to get the lunch combo which consisted of 2 items either chicken tery, beef, tempura, dumplings, california rolls or White tuna sashimi. Everyone had the sashimi as one of their choices! Who would pass out on sashimi?? So anyway, the combo also includes rice and the usual miso soup, which of course is also delicious. We decided to order one dragon roll or was it rainbow roll? To share for 3. My favorite was the roll of course, but it wasn't until after the bill came when my friend read... Yeah 17.00 for the roll to split on. I was like WHAT!!! I mean it was really good, but i thought it was ridiculoua that it would almost be doubled the price of the rainbow rolls from Chocolate Sushi. I expect 10-12$ for a roll... It wasn't that much more fresh or amazing than (choco sushi aka. Olleh sushi).. So i thik ill just stick with my favorite plce!
Anyway the place wasn't bad, i liked the restaurant a lot so it was still an overall pleasant experience! -

Wasn't bad, wasn't great.
Asked for no avocado because I'm allergic.
First roll (crunch) came out first, without avocado. This roll is really nothing special. I highly don't recommend it.
Second roll came out later with avocado. They seemed to spend 20 minutes on the first one that came out with avocado. After apologizing, the roll came out without avocado in about 5 minutes or less. o_O. I forgot the name of the roll but it had clam in it. This roll was good.
Overall, not impressed. -

When I worked in Cupertino, this was my favorite place to get nigiri (there's better places for maki).
The restaurant is microscopically tiny, and they do sometimes get slammed for with a rush. If you want no waiting, go elsewhere. If you want awesome fish, come here.
They accommodate children well, btw. -

Sorry guys, going to have to disagree with all of the rave reviews. Maybe lunch is a different story, but I left severely disappointed after dinner.
Everything was fine. It wasn't spectacular, it wasn't horrible. The waitress came and asked repeatedly every 30 seconds if we were ready to order. Clearly, we weren't. Maybe if their menu had a description of the rolls, it would have gone faster. A picture would be nice too. Now I'm sure some of you are saying "damn white boy doesn't even know what a rainbow roll is" and you know what? You're right, I don't, so give me something to go by. Finally, I said to hell with it and we ordered our sashimi and whatever roll didn't have avocado. I didn't care at that point.
The sashimi came out fast. We ordered the maguro and hamachi sashimi dinners. Seven small pieces of each, on one plate. No rice, no soup, no salad, for $29 combined for those. Again, it's not that it was bad. The fish was fresh, but for $30 I could do better just about anywhere in the Bay Area. In fact, I was appalled at the portions and cannot believe it cost so much for such a small portion. Maybe the inner fat kid in me is used to TGI Sushi in Campbell (which I would say is superior to this in every way), but I left starving with a $50 bill and we only had water to drink. The roll (no idea what it was called) was okay, but four small slices with some soft shell crab in there wasn't going to fill me up either.
This is probably the first less-than-great review I've ever written on Yelp and unfortunately, it is called for this time. I'll continue to go to my tried & true place. Thank goodness I was in wonderful company, or I would have left in an even more sour mood.
Cheer. -

You can take my round-eyed gringo ramblings with a grain of salt, but this place looks like the real deal. The clientele is almost all Asian, it's very crowded (and noisy) with little to no decor, and the sign outside this converted house is in Japanese, not English.
As a result, I was embarrassed to order a California roll. I like them, okay?
My husband got the $16.50 combo plate of beef teriyaki and sashimi. He had to cut off the fatty pieces. He liked it; I thought it was okay. It was a little soupy and sukiyaki-like, served with bean sprouts.
The big winner was the tempura with a light batter. We actually saw the tempura on other tables as opposed to our orders better suited for round-eyed gringos.Listed in: It's Teri-Yummy or…

Sushi Kuni is a really cute little sushi place (it looks like a little house) in Cupertino, down the street from Apple. My lunch companion and I enjoyed all the rolls, and the service was good. It gets really busy though, so I suggest you did what we did and get there just before noon, to secure a table.
