10 reviews for Sushi-Koh
I was in honolulu determined to have Omakase style sushi and I'm so happy to have experienced it at Sushi-Koh.
There must have been at least 6 courses served to us, each were delicious. ALL the sushi melted in my mouth. I was stuffed by the end of the night. I dream about the sushi that I had here.
The ambiance is very laid back and relaxed and the kind of environment that makes you want to stay and enjoy your food. It is outdoors, near a pool which is awesome because you can feel the hawaiian breeze at night. The servers and sushi chefs were all very nice.
I'm very very picky about my sushi and I'm happy to say that Sushi-Koh exceeded my standards. Get the Omakase!
Okay, they have one of my favorite things in the world here:
Miruhimo. It's the guts/liver of a giant clam. If you're ever in NYC, go to Yasuda and get this sashimi style. You will die of deliciousness.
But if you're in Waikiki, go to Sushi-Koh. They serve their Miruhimo like a calamari appetizer: lightly breaded and tempura. It's pretty hard to find a place that will actually put it on a menu, but once you do, it's worth taking notes. So 4 stars for that.
The sushi is okay. I know I'm gonna step on some toes here (sorry duder), but really, it's just okay. If you like fish, go to Sasabune for better fish (and err... warm rice). If you like abalone, crab, lobster, oysters, go to Mitch's for better shellfish.
The miso soup is instant. I can taste that stuff from a mile away.
If you're not sitting at the counter, they'll serve you $20 glasses of Kubota in... plastic stemware. Ouch. Not to mention on red gingham vinyl picnic tablecloths. OUCH.
The service is hectic. These ladies are slammed and they don't mind telling you that they are... that is, when you see them. Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
The uni was inconsistent. One piece was yummy, the next was so vile I almost spit it out. Yick.
I think he makes his own tamago. Either that or he fooled me (you crafty chef!).
Sushi -Ko is gone and has been replaced by Wasabi Bistro. Wasabi Bistro is not that bad but not cheap.
I don't think it's open. We walked back and forth on the block looking for it... Wish that it was there :(
The BEST sushi in Hawaii!!! especially for the price!
Update 3/11/08:
NNNNOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where did you go Sushi-Koh?????
I leave town for a month and a half and two of my favorite places to eat are GONE!
This place had a real sushi chef from Japan who would pick the freshest and most tasty fish available in the Islands. Then he would cut and prepare it to perfection. This place was the true essence of Oishii. The sushi was on par if not better than most of the sushi places I've been to in Japan. The Hamachi Kama was awesome too.
But now, it's gone....
btw. My other favorite place was Imari.
Delicious Japanese food. Great service. Two-item bento box (with a huge selection!) for $12.75 at lunch. Did I mention delicious?
Is this place still open? I drove by today, but I really couldn't tell. Anyways, I used to go here all the time when I used to work in the ANA building. Great food, good prices.
Sushi Koh re-opened its doors in the beginning of June at their new location, the Breakers Hotel on Beachwalk, right across the street from their old location. This is the BEST sushi restaurant I know of - price and quality of food, but then again, I'm really biased because my best friend from high school is the daughter of the owners. The owners are from Japan and Mr. Hiroi was a sushi chef in Japan for a long time before moving to the US. Not only is the sushi really great, but the other Japanese dishes are wonderful too...oyako donburi, one of my favorites, is done really well here - Mrs. Hiroi is in charge of the hot food in the kitchen - it's a total family affair!
I got the Omikase here and it was splendid. Better than a good deal of the sushi I had in Japan with the exception of the Tsujiki fish market and that live octopus I ate...
The Best Japanese Food In hawaii (we didn't eat sushi) Not only was the food and service good , The owner, chef was charming, gracious, and knew great jazz when he heard it! The ambiance is so cool! kinda make shift but fun and funky ... We were the ONLY non-Japanese people in the place! Some Kind and gracious person in the back prepared us Hamachi-Kama and it was at the end of the night, ... IT WAS FANTASTIC! and I had a salmon that was so expertly cooked that i wish I could eat it every day! Too bad we mainlanders don't have the chance to experience this kind of excellence more often, I guess I will just have to go back!... and I thought i wasn't going to like Waikiki!
