San Francisco, CA
For my ~*OFFICIAL 700th Review*~, I wanted to write about another little place we discovered in the East Bay. We both love seafood, sushi, sake and trying new places - so me and the HH King decided to try Sushi Ko and redeem another one of my http://restaurant.com gift certificates.
We always take a seat at the bar. I like to watch the preparation and we always seem to get great service being up front and center. As we ordered looked through the menu, we ordered a bottle of Sakuyi Nigori Sake, a tall Sapporo to share, two teas, two waters and two miso soups. They brought us free edamame and all the wasabi and ginger I could handle. Lol.
We both have good taste in food and love ordering nothing but the best, so we decided on the:
* Bacon Wrapped Scallops: Simply Amazing, tender and very savory. Making my mouth water RIGHT NOW. ;) http://www.yelp.com/us...
*Hamachi Poke Appetizer: I love Hamachi! Really great quality and flavor. Loved the daikon salad and the flavor of the sauce. http://www.yelp.com/us...
*Sea Bass: Texture was amazing, cooked tender and fell apart. Had a slight butter/peanut taste to it. Very good. http://www.yelp.com/us...
*Fried Philly Roll: Although tempura is not my favorite, this roll was really good and the sauce on top was great. http://www.yelp.com/us...
*King Crab Roll: Fresh REAL Crab California Roll, topped in tobiko. A LOT of TOBIKO, just like I like it. Mmmm. http://www.yelp.com/us...
Dinner was perfect. Almost slightly too much for two, but very satisfying. We got a little carried away with the drinks and appetizers, but it was not too expensive considering everything. I really enjoyed everything and would come back anytime. Service was great.Listed in: Adventures in the East Bay!, Restaurant.com Adventures

Good but didn't knock my socks off. We got two rolls, the sashimi dinner and chicken teriyaki dinner. Sashimi was fresh with four different pieces of fish with four pieces each, one roll was good, one roll was just okay, and the teriyaki was boring though a "good value" for the amount of meat provided. Service was good, beer was a good price.
This might be a "4-star" but I really wasn't a "fan." -

The one time I want to stray away from my usual pick of their bento box, I got the chicken curry.
I was very disappointed with my meal, it was watery and it looks like a mess. I can even make better curry. I will be sure to stick with their bento boxes.
Minus 1 star for the unappetizing curry
Minus 1 star for their inconsistency with their food
On a side point: their chicken katsu is really good. -

this place absolutely sucks. the chicken teriyaki was absolutely uneatable!! it was filled with fat and the teriyaki sauce did notttt taste like teriyaki sauce. i ordered stir-fry noodles, just noodles with absolutely on them and they charged me EIGHT DOLLARS for noodles (its 9 dollars for the whole dish with chicken, soup, and salad)
the cucumber roll was okay, absolutely nothing special
overall, terrible experience. i gave it two stars instead of one because they had fast delivery -

El Cerrito, CA
When we walked in there wasn't a soul in the place, which made me a little nervous. We were acknowledged instantly though, seated, and served cold edamame and waters.
I thought that the sushi was good. Not awesome, but good presentation and still fresh. We had the gyoza to start, then the Berkeley roll, Cherry Blossom, Jade roll, and Sashimi regular- plus wine and sake with a green tea mochi for dessert. We were hungry! I liked the Jade roll and the Cherry Blossom the best. The Berkeley roll was a little boring.
Overall, a nice little place that is close to where I work. Kind of expensive, but cheap sushi usually isn't very good. I'd go again for sure. -

Totally satisfying and I love the many choices + bento boxes. Altho nothing uber-wow.

I love how they have a huge variety of sushi. Whenever I get bored of C U sushi's salmon/tuna sashimi, I will come to this place to try something new.
But to be honest, I still like the salmon sashimi in C U Sushi better. It's more expensive and pieces are smaller in Sushi Ko.
Service is good and the place is spacious, all of which C U Sushi kinda lacks. Sushi Ko has recently become my favorite spot for Sushi around campus. -

good sushi. Superb Service.
I am not a huge Japanese food fan, but my girlfriend loves it, so I have come to learn and enjoy it.
We came in with a http://restaurant.com certificate.
I ordered the seafood dinner, it was really good. real good value.
Oakland Raiders, Mango roll, blossom roll were all good as well.
The service was impeccable! At one point I dropped my chopstick and they were right on it replacing it!
The bathrooms are kinda cool/random you have to see for your self. -
Review from Helen Y.
I came here on a weekday for lunch, and the place was pretty full. We ordered a Bento Box that had Fish Katsu and BBQ short ribs ($9), and also the Sashimi Zaru Soba.($13). The service was a little slow that day, and we waited for some time before the soba was served.
The bento box was really fresh, both the Fish Katsu and ribs were delicious. However, the soba was not quite up to standard. It was chilled through ice cubes placed at the bottom of the plate, which made the soba a little too moist and soft in texture. Also, the soba sauce was really dilute. The sashimi that was served was good.
I've made a mental note to not order soba from there again. -

Stopped in with a few friends last Sunday night, and we were the only diners in the restaurant for the first hour because the students are mostly gone right now and the town is quiet. So, this may not apply at all times, but we had excellent service and a very relaxed meal.
We ordered so many things that I cannot comment on individual items except I am still thinking about how delicious the dragon roll was, and also a roll with scallops (can't remember the name, but it's the only scallop roll currently on the menu)
Really reasonable prices, too. Seems like a solid neighborhood standby. -

Not the best, not the worst. Ok service, ok menu, decent prices. Japanese decor throughout adding to your dining experience, but I gotta say i prefer the food at Party Sushi on Shattuck.

Rude and don't understand the customer is always right. Being Japanese I have high expectations of japanese restaurants, however most of the ones these days are not Japanese owned and operated. Sushi Ko is not authentic or good food, the tempura is really a poor batter, teriyaki sauces taste like they're from a bottle.
The reason I will never return though is the beef they use for teriyaki beef tastes old, gristly and comes out either over cooked or rare. I complained about the piece they served me - well done when I asked for medium rare, then they served me a rare steak with a funny taste and lots of gristle in it. I asked if I could get something else instead and the manager came out and told me no. The worst part was there was no apology for screwing up the dish, he said, "we can't make you happy." Nothing was comped for the screw up and I was asked to pay for the lousy dish. I will never return after the manager treated me like that and had actually eaten there with the expectation of less than authentic food 7-8 times bc a family member got bonus miles there. Since then, we've never returned as a family. If you want great inexpensive sushi, try Geta in Oakland or Kirala in Berkeley. Authentic Japanese cuisine try Yokohama in El Cerrito. -

The forty-niner roll tasted worse than the ones you can get in the fridge at Costco. It was stale and flavorless. No freshness to it.
Service was very very slow. Though, we were seated in a corner that was not as visible so they might have forgotten about us.
The place is packed at lunch time so you would think it would be decent, but it's not. -
Review from Liz C.
You can eat anything here for $7.95.
Lunchtime bento boxes, whose contents depend on the day of the week, are the best bang for your buck, though the noodle soups are no slouch from a portioning perspective either. The sushi itself is pretty unmemorable -inexcusable, to my mind, in downtown Berkley.Listed in: The Bay for Beginners

I've heard so much about Sushi Ko for the past two weeks, so i decided to look for it on the way to Brazil Cafe. And it was so hard to find, because there are like two Shattucks.
But the service was sooooooo goood (: I wanted to tip them more than 15% because they were always smiling and re-filling our water, and put the to-go food in very nice containers. I order a tempura udon and a party tray. Both of them were mediocre, the rice were not as good as other sushi restaurents. So to sum it up, 3 stars for food and 5 stars for service -

Sushi Ko Always has something new, Perhaps I haven't had lunch there recently, so I was pleasantly surprised at the Lunch Special menu--
Each weekday a different special. Today the Special was Tempura, and Tuna sashimi, and rice and a cute tasty little salad, preceded by a palate warming and cleansing miso soup.
So come on down, you all!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Bill B.
When I got home tonight, my roommate said, "I'm hungry. What do you want to do for dinner? I was thinking maybe we'd go for something that rhymes with 'ushi'" I'm an easy sell for rhymes like that, and since I had a coupon, Sushi Ko was our desitination.
The sushi quality was definitely high, and that's certainly the most important thing. I enjoyed that they provide free edamame for dine-in customers upon arrival and the moist towel before the food arrived was another classy touch. However, it seemed to take quite a while for our order to come out. The atmosphere was fine, though nothing special. Overall, one of several good options if you want sushi near campus, but it's not a destination restaurant for me. -
Review from Paola M.
Came for lunch. The place was packed, but service was good and quick. I had the bento box with tonkatsu and sushi and I really liked it. Too bad I am not in Berkeley (or the bay area for what matters) and cannot eat at tis kind of places more often!

My friend and I decided to check out a new sushi place, so we got a http://restaurants.com coupon and headed here. We ordered the spicy tuna poki, an order of the saba (mackarel), the cherry blossom roll, the raiders roll and the golden train roll.
The poki was very good, the rest, not so much. The cherry blossom was fine, but the saba was chewy, the raiders roll was weirdly smoky and the golden train roll was simply bad.
I will say that if I just wanted poki, I'd go back here, plus they had good service, but the rolls were very bland and nothing special. -

The katsu curry hit the spot. It's comforting and there was just hint of spice. The roll with the salmon and scallions is different. The scallions adds a freshness to the roll. Good sushi but nothing that will blow your mind.

VERY pleased with this place.
I am pretty intense about my sushi and as a "foodie", I feel like I should get unparalleled service at a restaurant...this place offers BOTH things I look for in a sushi joint; great food and incredible service.
Took my brother here one night, who is new to the sushi game. As we were gazing over the menu, we started off with sake and it was promptly brought to us. The manager of the venue overheard me telling my brother about the differences in rolls, styles, etc., and he even chimed in his opinions and let my brother try his first roll on the house! Amazing! I love when staff does little things like that to solidify your dining experience.
Wins: Deep Fried California Roll (I love anything deep fried) and Gyoza.
Loses: Beer and Wine only. VERY SMALL LOSS though, compared to the rest of the experience.
Notes: Really cute venue, GREAT for dates (as it's in that hip part of Berkeley everyone talks about), and the stars on the celing are kinda boss, too.
HIGHLY recommend this place. -

Very happy with Sushi Ko! For a long time I wasn't even aware of their existence, over there across the street from Ichi-Ban. Years ago, I was impressed by Ichi-Ban, but I can't say I have felt the same way for a long time.
Sushi Ko really has an appetizing menu, and it's a clean place to eat. I'm quite fond of it, and when I eat sushi in Berkeley this is where I first think to go. -
Review from Pook M.
Berkeley, CA
It's not great sushi by any means, the service is lackluster, the choice of music (country and/or pop one afternoon WTF?) confusing but it's decent enough to go to if Cha Ya is closed (which it happens to be now as they renovate the new space!!!).
I'm grateful for the vegan option(s), although uncertain why the menu says one thing and the servers say another regarding what is vegetarian or actually vegan. Consistency is gold. One complaint about the (uninspired) vegan sushi plate: the vegetables were undercooked and/or too big to eat gracefully. Also, not exactly seasoned. Ok, two complaints. -

I've been to Sushi Ko now a handful of times and I've enjoyed it every time. The prices are reasonable and the sushi is pretty good. My most favorite thing on the menu is the baked mussels! They give pretty good portions in their dinner bento boxes, which leads to yummy leftovers the next day!

I came here with my boyfriend a couple of months ago. The food isn't fresh enough in my mind for me to be able to review the exact times. All I know is that we kind of had a MEHHH experience.
The atmosphere was good. I think we came after the Cal v. USC game so it was pretty full. They had some weird music playing in the background.... I have always felt a little weird about the sushi places with the hip-hop music...:P
The food was over priced. Like I said, I don't remember what we ordered but I do remember us discussing that there are better options in Berkeley.
Their service was also mediocre. I remember our food came out realllyyyy late and I was starving and slightly annoyed.
Another weird thing was that they have bathrooms upstairs so you take a key from them and go up to the second floor... kind of spooky, even though I went during lunch time.
They have a http://restaurant.com coupon for $25 which you should get if you must come here because the food is pricey and you will use the $35 minimum with ease. -

I am a regular at Sushi Ko for at least two years now and will continue to be for as long as I live in Berkeley. The service I get is attentive and I always am advised of what is best that day so it is almost impossible to go wrong when I follow the chef's lead.
The selection of beer and sake is diverse so don't be afraid to ask what will suit your food order.
For those of you who insist on ordering your favorite fish you must realize that it may not be top notch on the day you are there, rely on the chef, otherwise you may be disappointed. -

Sushi is pretty good and prices are decent. The server (always seems to be the same guy) is really good at his job. Getting to the bathroom is sort of a trip though.

Very decent sushi. Reasonable price. Noisy. Rush service. Not good ambience at the sushi bar. Steamed whole soy beans for amuse bouche=nice touch. I'm very particular. Wouldn't return. Try Yume.

Review from Ilona F.
I had an evening in Berkeley after a week at a Zen center and was dying (well, not literally) for sushi. I'm glad I took time to read the whole menu and discover their Bento boxes. I ordered one with grilled saba (mackerel), mixed tempura, and 3 pieces of nigiri. The box also came with salad, miso soup and 3 pieces of California roll. It was a generous amount of food; the mixed tempura had several large shrimp and huge pieces of vegetables (squash, broccoli, sweet potato), the mackerel was excellent, and the nigiri was tasty, but not so amazing that I regretted not just ordering it a la carte. The friendly and attentive server offered me (dining alone) a seat facing the television but I chose to sit with my back to it. The food arrived quickly; I'd be happy to eat here again should I find myself in Berkeley another time.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Berkeley. This is not to say that this is my favorite sushi restaurant in the Bay Area...that would be over in Sausalito.
As anyone in Berkeley knows, you can't swing a dead cat in Berkeley without hitting a sushi restaurant...most of them are mediocre at best. Sushi Ko has a nice full Japanese menu with the requisite teriyaki and tonkatsu...two items I never order, tempura and bento the whole kaboodle.
However what keeps me coming back to Sushi Ko is the foie gras nigiri. Who would have thought you could get fois in Berkeley, certainly not me. But to find the delicate, unctuous liver served atop sushi rice with Japanese bbq sauce was such an unexpected find that I had to claim Sushi ko as my favorite Japanese restaurant in Berkeley. The also serve ankimono and, unfortunately blue fin tuna (unsustainable so don't order it).
If your main dining concern is keeping the costs down you may want to eat at one of the other sushi bars in the area, there are about one hundred or so, but remember that you get what you pay for when the menu prices are low.
I recommend going in, ordering three orders of foie and two of the ankimono nigiri, a couple of large hot sakes and just digging in for the night... you'll love it. Trust me, I'm a chef. -

So taking the advice of many Yelpers and getting the $25 coupon from http://restaurant.com, my sig other and I went to enjoy our sushi this weekend. Started with Fried Oysters in Panko with a Tonkatsu sauce that was decent. Nice crispy exterior with soft juiciness inside. Next was a foie gras roll (actually legal now in Chicago once again), that was topped with salmon and maguro. S.O. got a spicy tuna roll which was standard. Good but not great. The hamachi was lower belly meat and tasty. Lastly had the hamachi kama which for $12 is well worth it. Could have fed us for the entire meal if I knew it was going to be so big.
Now the bad part....they automatically charged 18% for the gratuity for only 2 guests. C'mon.....I get the fact they need to cover for the coupon, but the customer decides the tip amount. I might have returned for a future meal, but the presumption on the tip way skewed my review. There is a sushi place across the street....probably will visit them next time. -
Review from JP T.
My dad absolutely loves this place. I think we come here once or twice a month, armed with a http://restaurant.com coupon, and I am not complaining. The fish is always fresh, and the food is reasonably priced for the quality.
I always go with my sashimi deluxe platter, seaweed salad, and grilled squid appetizer when I'm here and it never fails to disappoint.
There are a bunch of sushi restaurants within a 2 mile radius of this place, but with a http://restaurant.com coupon, you cannot really go wrong at this place. -

Disgusting. Just went to lunch here and the bf and I are already looking for another place to eat since we're still hungry. Basically, the teriyaki was inedible. I believe the words "boiled third world chicken" were used when critiquing the mess on our plates. They even screwed up a cali roll. Dry rice, dry imitation crab, just yuck yuck yuck! Avoid if you can! Theres another sushi place across the street I wish we would have gone to!

I consider myself an independent woman.
The shoes on my feet? I bought it.
The clothes I'm wearing? I bought it.
The rock I'm rocking? I bought it.
Cause I depend on me.
So I had a moment of shock when I looked at the Sushi Ko menu. I'm embarassed to admit that despite having been to Japanese restaurants some countless number of times, my experience has typically been as follows:
Me: Oooh I like sushi!
Boy: What kind do you want?
Me: I like...unagi!
Boy: Okay.
Me: And... whatever else you think we should eat! (giggle! hair flip! playful yet sensual grin!)
Boy: Alright.
Me: (eats edamame whole by mistake)
Boy: ...um...
Me: (drops chopstick on floor)
Boy: ...um...
Me: I'm soo cute! Help me eat properly! Feed me! Buy me things!
Unfortunately, my lunch companion had known me for way too long to be seduced by my many charms, so in the interest of not looking like a complete buffoon, I decided to embrace my independence. I ordered lunch All By Myself.
I think I did a pretty good job. The unagi was flavorful though not the best I'd ever had. The 3-piece assorted nigiri was also tasty (although I have no idea what kind of fish I was eating). The chicken teriyaki was less exciting -- I felt the skin to meat ratio was rather high. Next time I order Japanese food All By Myself, I'll probably stick to raw fish-type items.
We didn't get free edamame with lunch, so I was unable to demonstrate my ability to eat it correctly. The chopstick use went off without a hitch, although I still haven't entirely gotten the hang of rice.
Overall, I'm very proud of myself. I think I'll write a song.
All the women who are independent
Throw your hands up at me
All the honeys who order sushis
Throw your hands up at me
All the hot chicks who can eat with chopsticks

You can't really get the good stuff here without the http://restaurant.com certificates, so my rating is based only on meals I've had using the certificate.
I'm not usually a big fan of baked rolls, but their Sushi Ko special is really good. Just great flavors and very safe for anyone squeamish to raw fish. Their sashimi is consistent. Never fishy and always a little on the cold side. I've had better sashimi elsewhere, but I would go here for sashimi over any other place in Berkeley.
The place is never packed, but there's always a bunch of people there for dinner. I never feel rushed while eating here and the food is brought out rather promptly. This is usually my fall back idea for dinner with my boyfriend. -
Review from Mariko F.
I had a http://restaurant.com gift certificate and so I took my business here. I was pretty happy with the food here, although there is the possibility of your bill getting a bit high if you are not careful.
My boyfriend and I ordered the Double Hamachi Roll ($9.95), which I thought was fantastic. I also had my first ever Poki. Some friends had been talking about it for ages and I saw it on the menu and decided it was time to try it. I had the Tuna Poki Sashimi ($10.85). It was really good. A bit on the spicy side, but then again, I guess that that's what Poki is about. I will definitely be ordering that one again! My boyfriend also ordered the Tuna Sashimi ($16). Can you tell we had a gift certificate? I think that the Tuna was an 8 out of 10. Don't get me wrong, it was very good quality tuna. But I have had better.
The winner of the night was the Poki though.
For dessert we had the green tea tempura ice cream ($5). It was a nice combination of hot and cold, sweet and tea-y. Good, not great.
All in all, I was really happy with this place and I will be back. Probably for the many less expensive items on the menu :) -

Their rolls are smaller than I'm used to, but still good. I thought my spider roll was going to attack me. They have my favorite sake, Nigori=)
You must, must try the fried banana desert with mango ice cream. But they only had 2 flavors when they advertise 6. Hummm, odd and green tea ice cream, no one wants to eat tea!
Good price for the 3 of us eating a lot!
Weird bathrooms upstairs. Humm not sure what that was about.
But beautiful ceilings in the restaurant with stars, I want to do that too! -

This is obviously not a japanese owned restaurant. The waitresses barely speak english and cant even figure out whats what on the menu. the best way to communicate here is *point* and *nod*.
This place deserves a two star rating because their yakitori isnt that bad. When they run out of the asparagus--beef wrapped yakitori they will suggest substituting the asparagus with mushrooms. DONT GET IT. It was horrible. The meat was incredibly tough and chewy. They werent button mushrooms, they used the white, stringy kind. It was disgusting.
You cant go wrong with the bento box lunches or dinners.
NOT recommended: Agedashi tofu. the coating is waaay too soggy and the agedashi broth is absolutely tasteless. The miso soup is also very bland. Pork katsu: waaay too salty. -

Food was okie..experience was so and so..nothing special about this place..
Will we be back?
not sure... -

Meh. Not impressed.
The nigiri was expensive, and the portions are half the size of most places I frequent. The only good news, I can actually eat my nigiri in one bite without looking like a slob. So overpriced small portions is worth 2 stars. To drink, they have flavored Sake on the menu. Not in the mood for beer, and not ready for straight sake yet, I gave it a try. They said it was lychee, I thought it tasted like perfume.
BONUS STAR: Sushi Ko is one of the few Bay Area sushi places I've found that has butterfish. As nigiri or sashimi it's buttery and smooth and delicious (although served a little too cold. It was almost frozen). They get 2 stars for everything else, but for offering butterfish on the menu they get a 3rd star.
