It's been a good long while since I've eaten here, a year or more. It's not that I don't like the place. Or maybe it is in fact the "place" I don't like. Shoved in under Old Chicago down a windy road past the hardware store; you don't just wind up here, you hafta wanna. And I have Sakura Bana, Hiro, Blue, and now Wasabi between me and Sushi Japan.
So, despite what I just said, we wound up here tonight after failing to find a likely place to get the buffalo chicken sandwich my wife wanted. We were in the neighborhood. I dunno, it just happened, ok?
We walked in, and the owner says something like "Wow, we haven't seen you for a while. You want the Yakiniku side?" I say "Yes." And she asks, "Having tongue this time?" And I say "Yes." Now that kind of memory for an old regular like me is a nice touch.
So if you're reading this, I imagine you know what sushi is, and have a pretty good idea what the usual selection of Japanese hot dishes might be, but Yakiniku may be unfamiliar since this is, I believe, the only place in town that serves it. So let me be "useful" for a sec.
Yakiniku is thinly sliced meat and veggies that you fry yourself on a gas griddle that sits in the middle of the table. They give you a plate full of raw stuff and some sauces, and away you go. Tonight, I ordered the chirashi sushi (selection of raw fish and pickled veggies sitting on a bed of sushi rice), since they have the best chirashi in town, and one set of beef tongue yakiniku. The wife and the boy ordered off the a la carte sushi menu.
Beef tongue may not be for everyone, I understand. They have other cuts as well for those who (usually) only want one tongue in their mouth at a time. Or at least, not beef. Anyway, the beef tongue comes with a scatter of salt and pepper and its very own sauce that is just simply scrumptious. It cooks up a bit chewy, but it's delectable.
So, yes, I had two dinners. Although I didn't eat the second set of miso soup and carrot dressing salad or the extra bowl of rice. It really had been a long time, and I wanted both. But a nice bowl of sushi, a decent sized mix of pickled and fresh veggies, and six ounces of beef set me back about 33 bucks. That ain't bad.
One local fellow on here puts this place below Hiro, Sakura, Blue, and even Wasabi. In his dreams. I trade between this place and Hiro for best in town, depending on what I'm craving. Oh, and here's something I probably shouldn't tell you:
Sushi Japan has fresh ground wasabi.
They don't tell you they have it, and they won't give it to you unless you ask. A new server might not even know it exists (yes, that's happened to me numerous times over the years). But they have it. I had it tonight. It's so very good.
Now forget I ever said it.Listed in: Regular Rotation

SO good! I pretty much like all sushi. This place was no exception. Cute decor, very friendly and helpful wait staff. I've been to this place 3 times in the past month and enjoyed everything i've ordered. Especially the tuna sashimi! YUMMO!
One time I went with a big group and we ordered so much sushi, it came on a BOAT!!! Loved it, nice touch sushi japan! I will be returning for more of your deliciousness and hopefully imbibing some of your saki next time! -

There is no other sushi solution in Omaha than Sushi Japan Yakiniku Boy. They serve the freshest sashimi of all the sushi places in the area.
Having lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for 13 years, I think I've got a pretty solid opinion of what makes for good quality sushi., as well as what good sushi should cost.
Sushi Japan does not disappoint on either account. -

I am from Japan so i should be a pretty good judge how Sushi should be presented and taste. Sushi Japan is by far the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Omaha. The fish is always fresh, no bad after taste or smell. I don't go for those Americanized rolls (sorry but those are just too far from how Sushi is in Japan) so I cannot review them. I always order simple fish and rice kind of Nigiri sushi and they are very good.
My husband does not like raw fish so he eats other cooked items and they are delicious too.
Service is always good, too. Great job, Sushi Japan! -

Yum! Went for lunch today (my Groupon was about to expire) and the server really took care of us!
Ordered the sushi lunch, steamed shrimp dumplings, and a Beyond Rangoon sushi roll, as recommended on here. Good stuff!
The sushi lunch came with a nice selection of fish, a very fresh california roll, a small basic salad with tasty carrot dressing, miso soup was average (though I've never been a big fan of it in general).
The Beyond Rangoon roll taste pretty much just like a crab rangoon. Tasty and creative, but I think I prefer Caterpillar rolls over this one.
Decor was in good taste, male server was friendly and awesome, fish was WAY better quality than Blue, and I'm excited to go back and try some other rolls and some noodle dish I saw come out of the kitchen. As usual with sushi places, budge atleast $20-25+ on average per person. -

Not only is the sushi good, but the grill side is a fun way to eat dinner, and YES they have restaurants like this in Japan. The only down side is that the grills are at tables and not in enclosed private spaces that you sit on the floor. Parking can be tough on the weekends. very small lot. I would not recommend for kids under 8.

I have been to almost all of the sushi restaurants in Omaha (Hiro, both locations of Blue, Sushi Ichiban, Sakura Bana), and this is by far my favorite! Their fish is always fresh and amazing. They usually have a great selection also (something different in addition to the traditional salmon, tuna, etc.). One of my personal favorites is the Kaki (oysters on the half shell with ponzu sauce), which they have most weekends. Zach, Saul, and Kelly (the sushi chefs) are all super friendly. They remember me when I walk in, which is always nice, and are always willing to make suggestions or create something special if you ask. Sit up at the bar for a real treat (and to harass the guys a bit). Service is always fantastic even if you sit at a table in the main part of the restaurant.
Their Mai Tai is the best I've had in Omaha, and they are on special Saturdays (all day). Sarah G. mentioned that they don't have happy hour, but they do have drink specials every day, and a roll of the month. -

The first time I ever tried sushi, it was here.
Now that I'm more familiar with sushi and have formulated my expectations of quality, I go here.
The only downfall of Sushi Japan is that they don't currently offer a reverse happy hour (like Hiro or Blue), so I do Hiro for Happy Hour, Sushi Japan for dinners.
I go back and forth on my 'favorite' between Sushi Japan and Hiro because Hiro has some menu items that they can't matched here... But the service at Sushi Japan almost always beats the service at Hiro.
So it's really just a matter of taste and convenience. Although Sushi Japan also has the option to cook your own food on the Yakiniku grills...
If you're interested in sushi, try them both. Then you'll have tried the two best sushi spots in town and can decide for yourself.Listed in: My Favorite Omaha Restaurants

Sushi Japan used to be my favorite sushi place in Omaha. I now prefer Hiro. But Sushi Japan is still very good. And it seems to be a very well kept secret because it is rarely very busy. I've been to Sushi Japan at 7pm on a Friday night and gotten a table for four immediately.
I've always had good service at Sushi Japan too.
I definitely recommend Sushi Japan if you've never been. -

I'm such a fan! Finally, good sushi. Blue can be a bit too much about the atmosphere and I just didn't appreciate the sushi at Sakura Bana. But Sushi Japan had what I needed in a sushi joint. A girlfriend and I sat at the sushi bar for great service and great specialty rolls. They have some unique rolls with jalapeno, cilantro, and so forth, which I appreciated. But the quality of the fish on its own was also phenominal. I'm still a little uncomfortable when the guy making the sushi is whiter than me, but I'm realizing I live in Omaha now and that anyone with the right training can make the good stuff!

The place is pretty chill. Dim lights and relaxing music in the background. The prices for the specialty rolls are pretty pricey but we did come up after using a Groupon. Even after the $30 Groupon we still paid about $15 but it was all worth it. Great food and it's all worth it.

This is my favorite spot for sushi in Omaha. I have not had better sushi anywhere else in town. The service is great. The miso soup is good as well as the side salads with either the carrot dressing or the ginger dressing. The atmosphere is not quite as good as Hiro, but it is still a great sushi place in the Nebraska. As opposed to Matt G., it has always been busy on the weekends with a wait for a table.

Sushi is not fresh. Would not return. Other dishes are salty and over sauced. I want to taste the food...not drown in sauce.
