Definitely a go-to place for take out sushi rolls any day of the week. I say "any" day cause there's a handful of restaurants in PB that do 30-50% off sushi on specific days. No need for eyebrow-raising sushi "clearance" sales here: They're rolls go for $4.50-8.00. I haven't gone the route of sashimi, but I can definitely vouch for their rolls, a good number of which you could order "baked with spicy mayo on top."

"Mmm, that sounds good, I'll have that."

Lines too long.  haha, I'm sure that hasn't been said before... I find it easier to do take out.  I like the price for its quality.  It's pretty noisy inside so it's hard for me to hear.  Maybe I should get my ears checked.  Anyway, most of the employees here are nice and provide good customer service.

If I am in the neighborhood, I may or may not stop by if I'm craving sushi.  But ehh, it's not the first place that's on my mind.  But many do like this place!  :]

Very yummy sushi and for a good price!

Try one of their combination sushi on their menu. I specifically ordered the Deluxe combo which had four kinds of their specialty rolls and four of each. it also comes with your choice of a salad, miso soup, or bowl of rice.

Place seems busy and up beat--and the service was cool and upbeat as well.

I'd come back again for lunch.

Sushi Deli One has the worst customer service! Their dirt cheap food does not make up for the shitty ass service.

I will tell you this about their employees:
    * The first waitress answers her ringing cell phone while placing the first half of our orders.
    * The second waitress walks away while placing the second half of our orders to clean up another party's broken beer bottle.
    * They give two waters for a five table party.
    * They give two salads for four orders that include salad.
    * When asked about the other two salads, a third waiter goes "well here's one" & places one down. Wtf
    * Minutes later, the same waiter gives us two salads (an extra to be nice?).
    * They give one beer when two beers were ordered.
    * We ask the first two waitresses for the other beer & they had a confused discussion.
    * They ask for ID after they already gave us beers.

There is no communication between employees. There should only be one waiter/waitress serving a table, not three or four. The waiters & waitresses are Caucasian and the sushi is made by Mexicans. Therefore, this isn't authentic Japanese food. The food ain't even all that great despite the price. Everyone that loves it here probably doesn't know quality Japanese food. Whatever, we were nice enough to tip them [with dollar quarters].

Love/Like/Hate relationship with Sushi Deli 1.
Love the prices and then you can get in and out quickly while on a lunch break.
Like the food, but don't love it. The dinners (such as terriaki) are good but the sushi is lacking and doesn't always taste fresh. Ordered teh edemme to have it taste was over cooked and not palate pleasing.
Hate the long lines and parking.
I will continue to go here based on the cheap bento lunch specials and quick service.

With all the sushi restaurants in San Diego, sushi deli is not one of my "come-backers". Price is just the token that I think make people come back. But the WAIT you have to stand through and the QUALITY of food is just not my cup of tea... or shot of sake. Waited for over an hour when the waiter said it would take 20 minutes. The hamachi kama was a little dry and their hand rolls we're made loose as if they were falling apart in my hand. Rolls were decent but can definitely find better.

I generally wouldn't come back. But if it's convenience (right next to CJ's bar where one of my girls' work), I'd come back for that.

I'd hope that they wouldn't know it's me making this review though. ;p

This is my favorite sushi place in San Diego!  Not only is the sushi fresh and inexpensive, there are a lot of rolls that you won't see anywhere else.

Came here on NYE to grab a quick dinner before going out.  Ordered 5 rolls and only paid a little over $30.

Caterpillar roll (eel and avocado)- This was my bf's favorite, but a little to sauced for my tastes.  Eel was generous, avocado was fresh.

Mexican roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cilantro)- wasn't as good as I remember from a previous trip here but I love anything with cilantro in it.

Spicy tuna roll- a staple in sushi for us.  It wasn't overly spicy.  Tuna had good flavor.

The last two rolls we had were monthly specials.  I can't remember the exact names but one was extremely spicy and had lemon on top.  This one was my favorite.  The other roll had hamachi and lettuce in it...not sure I'd get it again because lettuce in sushi doesn't really work for me.

Good: selection, price, takeout option if you're in a hurry
Bad: wait (if you don't get there early), service (was so busy, sushi came out slow)

Bottom-line: This place is a good place to start with sushi if you're not the biggest raw fish person.  Besides sushi, they offer entrees like tempura and teriyaki.  The wait can get pretty bad so it's a good idea to come early.  The service could improve but this place is probably very popular because of its price and good selection of food.  I love sushi and I try to make it a point to come here when I visit San Diego!

Let me start out by saying I used to love this place!!!  I have been eating at sushi deli for over two years and I have seen the quality go down drastically and its not just this location but all three.  I realize there is always going to be a long wait and that's all just part of the sushi deli experience.

My fiance and I always start out with garlic edamame that used to be to die for... now its not.  It used to be an amazing garlic glaze over the edemame, now its a watery slightly garlicy sauce over usually overcooked edamame.  Another thing is that i will order it about 10 minutes before the rolls but the edamame will still get there after the rolls which to me defeats the purpose of edamame.

second... the San Diego is one of our regular rolls and we used to love it but lately its been borderline disgusting.  It tastes like it sits in the window for about an hour after frying till it gets to our table.

I am done ranting but i would really like to see sushi deli go back to when i first started eating here.  I haven't given up on this place but they need to regroup and realize their quality has gone down drastically.

If you don't get their early you will be standing in line for a while. Even though you have to wait in line it is worth it but if you are impatient, get your order to go.

To keep it simple, if you like good sushi with many different options, go to Sushi Deli, you will not be dissappointed. There is a great selection to choose from and really resonable. They even have chicken teriyaki platters or a salmon teriyaki platter that come with salad and miso soup for like $5-6. As an appetizer I recommend the garlic edamame.

Ive been here on numerous occasions.  I've never had a bad experience. Maybe I just get lucky? (no pun intended).  Your meal isn't going to be served on a golden platter with a doily but it's yummy.  But what do you expect paying 5 to 7 bucks a roll. It's cheap Americanized sushi.  If I need quick sushi fix this place will satisfy my craving.  The service is fast and friendly.

Sushi Deli is a staple for my friends and I when in the Hillcrest area. You can always count on a few yummy rolls and some sake bombing for a decent price. My friend's favorite rolls are the Tropicana and the Katie.

Also, $2.50 for four of the dynamite (?) mussels. Awesome deal. I know because my friend made me eat one once (I had never had mussels before) and I have to admit that they were pretty tasty.

What a great surprise!  I love sushi rolls, and this place was delicious and inexpensive.  Two things which usually don't go hand in hand with  good sushi.  I had the Broadway Roll which was very fresh; spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, and salmon.  Service was prompt too.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was the music blasting too loud.  I will definately return!

So the bf and I decided to check this place out.  I've wanted to check it out for a while because of all the "hype" around it.  I figure, if there's always a line and my friends often rave about it, how can we go wrong?
Well, it was wrong from the start.  The sign out front reads something to the affect of, "Please wait for hostess to be seated".  So we walk in and we stand at the front. There doesn't appear to be a designated hostess per se, just a bunch of people running around.  Finally after about a minute, a girl says, "Did you sign in?".  I said, "Oh, no we didn't." To which she replies, "Okay, go ahead and sign in and we'll call your name when a table is ready."  Not a big deal, but the sign out front should tell you to sign in rather than wait for a hostess.  A clear lack of direction on their part.  As we started to turn around, we decided we would just sit at the bar.  So I ask the girl, "Can we sit at the bar?".  She said, "Yeah, that's fine."  So we sit down, and order drinks from the bartender after waiting for about 2 minutes.  He serves the drinks and walks away. Makes no effort to engage in conversation, nor does he seem interested in being there.  (in fact, half the staff seemed very uninterested in what they were doing)
We finally ask the bartender if we can order food.  He said, "No, not at the bar." That was it.  No, "Sorry, unfortunately you can't." or something like that.  He was very blank and dry in his response. Clearly, we were first timers and he made no effort to assist us in making sure we followed their procedures as customers, because they clearly aren't indicated anywhere.  So, annoyed, we debated on leaving.  I go back to the front and sign my name on the list, to which there are now 6 other people waiting for tables.  There was no one on the list when we got there.  So, now we've wasted about 20 minutes and we're back at square one.  After about another 20 minutes or so, we finally got a table.
Someone brought us water, although I'm not sure who.  Our server seemed quite busy and it took her well over 5 minutes before she was able to get to us for the first time.  Thankfully she had a pleasant demeanor and seemed friendly.  More than I can say for most of the staff.  They all seemed like robots almost.  There was very little personality whatsoever from the staff. ... Anywho, we ordered, ate, and only saw our server once, maybe twice, during our meal. We had to wait for quite some time also, to get her attention for our check.  I don't necessarily blame her because of all the servers, she and one other person seemed to be the busiest. Everyone else seemed to be strolling around the restaurant leisurely.
Overall, I don't understand the hype around this restaurant.  Yes, the prices are decent for sushi, and I know my sushi.  But the quality was decent, but not immaculate.  Definitely good for the price, but not the best or worst I've ever had.
I really don't see myself ever going here again intentionally.  If it was for someones birthday or something, I'd tag along.  But there are enough other sushi spots nearby that I prefer much more.  I wanted to like this place, I really did.  But I was so put off from the get go, I can't imagine them doing anything to make me change my mind.

We got lucky with parking, but the wait was about 30 minutes on a thursday night. Definitely took advantage of the 99 cents bud light draft.

I don't specifically remember what rolls we got, but they were all very tasty! We ended up getting 2 combos and an extra roll. With the combos came miso soups (or salad or rice). The miso soup was so yummy that I insisted on finishing it even though the rolls had came. We had SO much food leftover since it was just me and my boyfriend.

The service was not so good.. Since it was later on in the night, the server seemed anxious to get off. He didn't really pay much attention and seemed impatient with us.
    -1 for that.

Overall, I'll be back here very often! maybe tomorrow :) With such low prices and great quality sushi, I'll let the service slide ! :)

Another place I used to live just a few blocks from but now just a short drive away.  Sushi Deli has a lot of specialty rolls to choose from.  I pretty much don't eat anything that doesn't have heat to it, so my requirement is a spicy roll! They lose a star because most of their rolls have mayo or something fried in them and i try to steer clear of that.  However, I always find something I'll enjoy, it is reasonably priced,  and if mineral water- er- bud light is your thing it's always 99 cents! Although it's not my favorite beer, that is a good deal (I've seen bud light go for $6 at some restaurants, wtf is that about?)

Granted I only spent 24 hours in San Diego, I definitely picked the right place to have dinner.

Don't hesitate if you see a crowd outside because it's well worth the wait. For a party of 4, we spent about 20-30 minutes waiting on a Friday night. But it's cool because outside this hole in the wall is a prime people watching location along a not-so-busy street, and I love my people watching.

Anywho, I went for the 4x4 April special, which includes 4 rolls of sushi with 4 pieces each for just $10.99. The rolls that month included one with spicy jalepenos, one with a unique mango sauce, one with shrimp tempura and another with raw fish. They also have a variety of bento boxes and other roll combinations to get the most bang for your buck. The service was kind of whatever, but I was still really impressed that the sushi had such a good price and taste. If I'm back in SD, I would for sure come back!

**One extra plus is that their bathrooms are squeaky clean!

How this place only has 3.5 stars fools me. The sushi is great. For the price you pay, it is the best sushi by far in its price range.

A lot of people complain about the long wait times, but honestly I have never had to wait more than 5 min to be seated.  Of course there is going to be a long line on a Friday night....what well known and liked restaurant wont have a significant wait time. Don't want to wait, don't go during the Friday evening rush.

In addition to the great sushi, the service has always been good and they sell $0.99 pints of Bud light. Of course Bud doesnt line up with craft beers, but who would turn down 99 cents!

Looking to try a new roll, the Navavana is my first pick and recommendation.

This place is very good at very reasonable prices.  I've been to low priced sushi before, and you typically feel like you got what you paid for.  Usually there is something missing from the low priced sushi, usually very bland.  But this place is different.  For 10-14 dollars you can get one of their sushi combos that come with a lot of pieces of sushi and it is very tasty.  We go here for lunch every couple of months and always have a great time.

This place always has a line, so be prepared to wait a while.

Fantastic for the price. Take my advice, if youd like to sit and eat,  go at a time when they are not so busy, like between 2 and 4. Any other time, and you will be waiting for a significant amount of time.

However, my favorite thing to do here is to order it TO GO. Not only do you get delicious, well priced sushi in fifteen minutes, but you get the immense satisfaction of walking past twenty people in line, (usually people on dates) in nothing but your gym shorts, and picking up your meal in two minutes and going home. Man, the looks on their faces...Makes the meal taste that much better!

Every time I'm in hillcrest i don't care if I just ate I always make a stop here. The wait can be ridiculous and they won't seat you until your whole party is there. It well worth the wait. Sushi Deli is probably my favorite sushi restaurant so far, for the simple fact that they are cheap AND delicious. I had the Kaley Special and the Mexican rolls and both were great. I also tried the orange roll and the sweetness was something new but refreshing.

The decor is cool and I especially loved the homemade Halloween decorations they had up. The waitstaff were all very friendly and on their game tonight too.

The only drawback was the wait. The friends that took us there told us ahead of time that it was a pretty popular place and that was apparent from the wait time to get seated.

All in all though, it was a good experience.

    Did I scare you???

Anyway, this place is a pretty solid sushi joint. I've eaten here twice and haven't had issue with the food (my ER trip was due to an allergic reaction to avocado, which could have happened at any restaurant). My favorite roll is the San Diego roll. Everything has always been fresh and they make the rolls huge and I always end up having to take something home. The prices are fairly inexpensive and the service is good. The waitresses we've had have always been attentive and courteous. Definitely check it out!

Now, first let me say that I love Sushi Deli. Absolutely my favorite sushi place in San Diego. It really is. I have always had great service, the sushi is always great...but my experience Sunday was no where close to what I am used to experiencing there.

    1. The area where the hostess sat us, was dirty. I'm not saying that the table wasn't cleaned,  because it looked like he tried but was just in a hurry.  With that being said, we had to wipe up the remainders with our napkins. The floor was disgusting with smashed food and trash. Don't believe me? I took a picture.

    2. My server seemed as if he were over it. He wasn't friendly, he kept trying to finish our sentences as to hurry us up and checked on us one time during our time there. He seemed to be too caught up in refilling the soy sauce bottles around the restaurant so that he could get out as soon as his shift was over. I had an empty water glass for 20 minutes. (Yep, I timed it).

    3. We watched our food sit on the expo area for longer than it should have.  By then, we all were over it and just wanted to get out of there.

Like I said, I love this place but this visit definitely has me considering going back.  Sushi Deli, you ought to be ashamed of yourself...

So many options there has to be something you'd like. Decent pricing too.

I love Sushi Deli!  Super cheap and super good!  Service is a little slow but it is totally worth the wait!  The staff is always around and available, plus very friendly.  Unfortunately, there is almost always a wait to get a table, unless you arrive early.  There is a table outside the front door for you to write your name and then the waiting begins.

I've tried the Sushi Deli roll, spicy tuna roll, and super caterpillar roll.  All of these were significantly cheaper than I've ever paid before, and you get a large roll!  Not the best spicy tuna roll ever but not terrible and the other rolls made up for it!!  The other people at my table all ordered sashimi and loved it! Large slices with good mix plate options.  And good drink specials!  $5.50 for a large beer and hot sake.

Totally suggest this place for everyone!

Sushi Deli One is bomb. There is always a super long line but its worth the wait. The rolls are reasonably priced and the portions are huge. The Alba Mexicana roll is wicked good and Im a huge fan of the Ninja Roll. You get really inexpensive sushi and a solid portion size and its really quite good. Ive never had a bad experience. Bud Lights are $1 and Sake is wicked cheap too and if you get one of their Monthly Specials(a hefty mix of 4 different rolls) for like 11 or 12 bucks you'll leave there super full and very satisfied.

Sushi Deli One has a great idea for people that are just developing a taste for sushi by having monthly specials that have four unique rolls each month, plus they also have combination plates that have more than one roll to it, this way you don't have to purchase each roll individually and it's less expensive too!

I don't get why everyone goes here.

This is the worst place I've ever eaten. Like 4 times. I've been to 3 of their locations. I kept trying and trying to like it, like everyone else, but no luck.

Their teriyaki chicken tastes like what roach traps in the 90s smelled like. Their sushi smells and tastes bad and fishy. Even their tempura vegetables taste terrible. How do you screw THAT up?

For $5 you can get waaaaaay better sushi at Dragon's Den during happy hour. True, there aren't many choices for $5, but at least it won't suck.
