I'm never disappointed when I eat here.

Service can be kinda slow sometimes, but I love the food.

    Typical Americanized Sushi place.

Semi-long wait, but it's pretty cheap here? Come during Happy Hour!

This is the usual spot for sushi on convoy - when you crave cheap rolls and don't mind waiting. That's right - the wait is absurd every time I come. Once you learn the trick, you think you can make it in time without much wait. So you try hard to learn the peak hours and avoid them as much as possible. You come in, during random times, but somehow other people manage to find out your secrets and your strategy becomes useless.

But once the wait is over, and you sit down, you feel satisfied, and excited to have tons of rolls for a very good price.

I always order the Yokozuna + Tuna Mexican Roll. The Yokozuna, I feel, fills me up the most and has decent amount of variety. Tuna Mexican Roll finishes the job that Yokozuna fails to do. All this for a pretty good price too. Their menu has good variety and usually have most of the cheap fish types.

Do not come here for quality. The nigiri sometimes tastes horrible (below average) that almsot made me gag once so normally, I would give this place a four star but yeah......but then again this place made me happy many times too =)

Bad service. No one is greeted when walking in the restaurant and the workers pretend as if you're not there until you're seated.
Bad quality sashimi. (The sashimi was served in chunks, not slices)
Other than serving a lot of food for a good price, I would NOT come here if you're looking for tasty sushi.

Popular and crowded.  Taste is fine and rolls are cheap.  Had "best seller" 4 types of roll sushi combo, and all 4x were just filled with imitation crab meat on the inside, NOT fish!  There's a reason why it's much cheaper folks...

Let me start out by saying I used to love this place!!!  I have been eating at sushi deli for over two years and I have seen the quality go down drastically and its not just this location but all three.  I realize there is always going to be a long wait and that's all just part of the sushi deli experience.

My fiance and I always start out with garlic edamame that used to be to die for... now its not.  It used to be an amazing garlic glaze over the edemame, now its a watery slightly garlicy sauce over usually overcooked edamame.  Another thing is that i will order it about 10 minutes before the rolls but the edamame will still get there after the rolls which to me defeats the purpose of edamame.

second... the San Diego is one of our regular rolls and we used to love it but lately its been borderline disgusting.  It tastes like it sits in the window for about an hour after frying till it gets to our table.

I am done ranting but i would really like to see sushi deli go back to when i first started eating here.  I haven't given up on this place but they need to regroup and realize their quality has gone down drastically.

Let's be honest here folks, if you're going for quality sushi, I would recommend you a fair amount of other places before Sushi Deli.

That being said, what you get with Sushi Deli (and the basis for my review) is sub-par customer service, a loud and noisy environment, and long lines thanks to all the other people that are in search of cheap sushi and cheaper drinks. The parking is atrocious, at best, and you will be waiting for a while unless you are waiting outside before they open.

My personal recommendation to you, if you are looking to eat a lot of sushi on the cheap is to call your order in and pick it up. You skip the line and don't have to feel obligated to tip the poor service. Also, don't feel frustrated that there is a constant busy tone and/or long hold times while attempting to place an order.

Yes yes, there is wayyyyyy better sushi out there, but it's so cheap here! Most rolls are under $8! I like drinking here during happy hour 5-6:30. I forget how much sake and beer is, but I know it's cheap. I love my sake bombs!

    What I usually get.
That monthly box special they got going on. Good deal for all that stuff in there.
    Hot Hot Crunchy roll
GARLIC EDAMAME (my fave)...they don't have this anywhere else. Try this if you haven't. It blows regular edamame out of the water!
One of those special rolls if it sounds good to me.

This place is popular and gets busy. Really busy. Most of the time, you're going to have to wait for a table. Surprising, since it's in the middle of an industrial street where there are no other restaurants. All Sushi Deli restaurants are busy like that, people really like it here!

Oh yeah, make sure your whole party is there or else they won't seat you.

We are here at least once a week.  I love it I love it I love it.  No, it is not a place to get sashimi.  Yes, it is a place that is fun, inexpensive, creative, and delicious.  I crave the shauna roll when I'm not there.  I think about the tuna mex and the cheap cheap drinks.  I love bringing people here -- there's something for everyone!  Yes, you will likely have to wait - but that's okay because bud and bud light are only $1/pint all the time!

And when I want awesome fish for a buttload of money I go to sushi ota.  But they only get my money once or twice a year.

tldr; sushi deli is cheap and awesome.  be prepared to drink while you wait.

This place is really not that good. I mean its good for its price but that's pretty much about it.

I loved this place back in high school but now that I'm older and experienced better, it just doesn't compete. There was this one time I ordered the navavavawhatever roll, the edges of the rice were hard and the calamari was stale, like it was just sitting out there for a long ass time. Customer service wasn't friendly at all, haven't they heard of serving with a smile?

Second time around it was a lot better. I ordered one of their "expensiver" rolls which was the golden tempura roll. It was pretty good, but not as fresh as id like it to be. Without having going the second time around I probably would've given this place 1 star. But the price and the appetizers got me.

Fried tofu, fried gyoza, and the fried calamari is probabaly better than the rolls. Miso soup is good but not diggin the crunchies in them. Oh and DON'T go when they're about to get off for lunch, all they care about is getting outta there.

If you're hungry and feelin cheap, its the place for you.

Sushi deli has the best reasonably priced sushi. The fact that they have Sapporo on tap really is a deal closer for me. I really enjoy their monthly sushi menu, they give you a 4 roll combination with a salad/soup and it's like 16 bucks. Really hits the spot every time. If you feel like getting your sushi on and you don't want to spend too much, hit up Sushi Deli.

There usually can be a pretty long wait if you don't show up exactly at opening. I absolutely love the food here, especially for the price. It's a crazy good deal! The only thing that can suck is how busy they are, but really isn't that a good sign of a great restaurant ? Try to get there close to opening time, if not don't come starving, if you're like me and get super grumpy and ornery when you're hungry. Haha. It is definitely worth the wait though. You stuff yourself silly with good sushi and theres 99 cent pints of bud light all day erryday. If you're too much of a beer connoisseur for that, happy hour all beers are half off.

This place would be a 4 because the sushi is pretty good, especially for cheap sushi and the prices amazing.  But man, the service is so damn awful I can't suggest people go here.

    1. They do not open on time.
    2. They do not answer their phone.
    3. They run out of items and sub without telling you.
    4. Parking is awful.
    5. Lines.
    6. Slow service.
    7. Noise.

Do not order in or wait in that line.  It takes forever to get a table and longer to get food.  Order to go.  For to go it's nearly impossible to beat.

Here's a tip to the owners:
If the line is huge at 11 or noon when you open on weekends, open earlier!  If the line is massive at 5, open earlier.  If it's 5 o'clock, then open on time as you've got a line around the block already.  Turn off your damn answering machine (who still has answering machines?!) at the time your place opens!

LET ME JUST SAY THAT THEIR HAPPY HOUR IS BOMB DOT COM

I definitely love their bento boxes too! This place is fantastic. Sushi is my favorite food ever, and this place definitely ranks as one of my favorites.  The mussels come perfectly done. They have lots of sushi specials and rolls.  During happy hour, it is $4 or$6 bucks for a large beer and small sake.  Might be $4.  Honestly, I've come here for two birthdays and some other times, and they all were great.  The waitress' are super nice and understanding. They will even split the bill if you ask for it.

Make sure to get here earlier for happy hour because there will be a line.  You can definitely first order at the bar and wait there.  They dont take reservations and do close earlier than most places, but I definitely recommend coming here.

Just talking about this place makes me miss it, I must come here again soon.

This place is an all-time-classic. Cheap and the food is really good.

The super caterpillar roll is crazy good and i love there hand rolls. However I'd advise against the "san diego roll" it's nasty and way to creamy.

All in all I'm always impressed with the massive crowds, varying classes of people, ambiance, and service. Good date place as well.

Pretty good sushi.  I just moved here from Okinawa, Japan and I have had a hard time finding good sushi.  This place is the best I have found so far.  I love all the unique rolls.  The lines stink though!  We took our daughter (a die hard sushi lover) for her 10th birthday and had a 2 hour wait after they told us 1 hour.  I don't think we would have stayed if they told us 2 hours.  By 9pm she was having a serious melt down.  Luckily the service was super fast and the food was delicious!  And the staff is awesome and very friendly and we love the fun atmosphere.

i honestly regret the fact that i've lived in san diego for 4 years and this was my first time here. REGRET.

their happy hour is awesome-i think it was $5 for large beer and small sake--gotta be honest, i wasn't the one paying ;) we had a group of 12, and the drinks just kept coming...we all left sufficiently drunk (except the drivers of course)
    +1 for happy hour drinks

we had a big group and the waiters were so accommodating in seating us, serving us, and splitting the bill. Most places get pissy when you ask them to split the bill, but our waiter didn't even flinch and even offered to! +1 for service

THE SUSHI WAS GOOD! first of all, great selection. i saw some rolls i had never seen and ordered Nutty Roll which has tofu and peanuts. sounds weird, but it tasted like pad thai of something really good haha...and it was a nice change from spicy tuna fillings which i normally get. i tried a few other rolls and was totally satisfied. tasted great!
    +1 for food

oh and did i mention, the prices were CHEAP! so cheap. we came in a big group, so our total was massive, but individually, my meal was something like $10 (roll, salad, soup, seaweed salad--and you know those are overly expensive usually...)
    +1 for prices

and i know this sounds weird, but i LIKED the location...it was random, but easy to find, easy to park (across the street) and close to the freeway. great central place for our group to meet at!
    +1 for location

so that's the breakdown of my 5 star review :)

I still come here from time to time. The prices are decent and I usually order a 4x4 or one of those monthly specials to get a taste of different rolls. Sometimes I even order another roll but there will be leftover consequences. I love sitting by the sushi window cause I like looking at all the food.

Only downside I noticed were orders weren't delievered out for like 10 minutes. Must be hectic and busy servers.

    SERVICE SUCKED!

I'm all about the food and usually it doesn't get to me but wow never had a waitress so rude! I understand that my order was a bit confusing but did she really have to roll her eyes! As i was talking she walked away and said she had heard me. REALLY?!

I was so pissed off and even my group noticed how rude she was to me. I did not come to wait for an hr just for poor service!

The only good thing about the place was its prices. REALLY cheap salmon.

NOT that this matters or anything but the tables were also very close together and made me extremely uncomfortable when creepy guys in the restaurant would stare! It was like they were right in front of my face. Not a pleasant experience when you are trying to eat.

    Sushinommsnomss :).

Came here on a Sunday night, wasn't packed at all, put our names on the list, stopped by Mitsuwa for a little shopping, and right when we came back, it was our turn!  Yes, the wait is long, and it's a given, so in the meantime, occupy yourself at the nearby grocery store or something.  I didn't mind at all :).

A pitcher of Sopporo is only 10 dollars!  :))))))  And they have a drink special with a large beer and Sake for 4.99, but I didn't get it.

On to the food:  I ordered the Vegetarian Sushi Platter, and loved it!  I chose the salad (nommy dressing) as my starter and by the time I got to my sushi, I was pretty full from the beer and the salad that I only had time to finish one roll.  (togo yummyness)  I'm not a fan of "real" sushi, so this place is perfect for me! :)  And I was surprised at how cheap it was...

The one thing that pisses me off is how far away the bathrooms are... especially if you've been drinking all night and reaalllllly had to pee.  The noise level was pretty loud, but that's a given for most sushi restaurants, so it didn't really bothered me. The food took a while, but I was preoccupied with le booze and le salad so I didn't really notice.  And parking sucks.

Other than that, yes, I will come back and order same thing :).

The sushi quality is mediocre (maybe less than mediocre), but the prices are excellent! They have a few specials, but even non-specials were a great deal. I had the yokozuna which had 8 pieces of spicy tuna, 2 cucumber pieces, and 4 nigiri (shrimp, yellowtail, eel, salmon and tuna). All this food (15 pieces) was only $9!

My friend had the 4x4, which came with 16 pieces for only $8. She also ordered some food to-go for her husband. The waiter misheard her and gave her the wrong order. Instead of taking the order back and replacing it, he let her keep it and gave her her correct order! That was approximately $22 worth of free sushi! The waiter was extremely apologetic for getting the order wrong and making us wait for the correct order. He was very friendly, so we tipped him extra.

The restaurant has a small bar and quite a few tables for what seems like a small restaurant from the outside. However, it can get very loud inside. I had to pretty much yell to talk to my friend.

All in all, okay food, but great prices. It's a quick fix to fill your sushi craving. I wouldn't go out of my way for this. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, especially with friendly service, so 3 stars.

Good sushi for the price, but it could get really crowded--I went today (Tuesday) for lunch around 1 and I had to wait for about 20 minutes!! I parked across the street in the Ross parking lot because it's hard to find street parking---and yes, I would do illegal activities for sushi.

Probably one of the worst restaurants in San Diego. I've been here multiple times because a friend of mine is totally enamored with it (Probably because of his being a giant cheapskate). This place consistently has long waits due to the poor and slow service you get once you're inside. You would think they would at least have some decent food because why would people be waiting otherwise? Nope. The sushi here is probably the worst sushi I've ever had and I would honestly rather get sushi from a grocery store. Everything here is of the absolute lowest quality. Sure this place is cheap, but you get what you pay for and if you aren't willing to spend the extra few dollars to have a decent meal then you probably shouldn't be eating out at all. AVOID at all costs.

My experience at Sushi Deli can be summarized with two words - TERRIBLE SERVICE. I don't know whether or not this was a singular event that doesn't happen all too often (probably was judging as how it's 4 stars) but it was literally the worst that I've had in a longggggggggg time.

My friends and I came in a huge group (20~) only to find that the best that Sushi Deli could do was seat us in 3 separate groups. That was a bummer but there was nothing we could do as there was a physical limitation on space.

The first group to order gets their food about 20~ mins in which isn't too bad so the rest of us think that our food will be out in the next 5-10 minutes. Because our second table had more people/a bigger order, we didn't really question it when the third table got their food first, but after another 15 minutes we began to wonder whether or not they had forgotten about the second table which is pretty retarded considering we came in as a huge group and the place wasn't even full. This doesn't register with any of the waiters until the first table is literally DONE with their food. Needless to say, the food (as tasty as it may have been) went down pretty horribly and my table was pretty pissed (the other tables were pissed too cause they had to wait an extra 20-30 after they had finished eating lol).

The waitress gave us a lackluster apology so my friends and I responded by giving her no tip.

This is my third and last trip to Sushi Deli 3. We arrived today when they opened (11:30). We were seated and 5 minutes later our waiter took out drink order. 5 minutes later we ordered our lunch. Blaring in the background was RAP noise masquerading as music. We could not hear each other in our attempt to visit during lunch. At 12:15 I asked how much longer before I would receive my meal. The other party eating with me received her meal at 11:55. She finished her meal at 12:20 and I told the waiter to cancell my meal. His attitude was extremely poor and uncaring and truly rude..

This is similar to our second visit and experience. We will not return. I would NOT suggest going to this Sushi Deli unless you are OK with blaring RAP noise, poor service that takes forever.

The Sushi Deli downtown is the best. Service exceptional and the food great. This one falls flat and fails totally.

Sushi Deli 3 is in a weird location in Clairemont. It is the third one after all :) It was a good lunch. I had the gyoza and crispy calamari roll. I requested for my spicy mayo on the side, and she didn't get that right, but surprisingly it wasn't all that spicy for me. Which is good, because I hate spicy things!!

My lovebug got the San Diego Roll (which was enormous and he couldn't finish it) and the Hot Hot Roll...which is claims wasn't all that hot. lol. I wouldn't know. I mean we were eating during the lunch-dinner transition, so I felt rushed, but it was a satisfying meal. The tables are kind of too close together, and they wait can be extremely long depending when you go.

I had really high expectations for this place because everyone seems to love it. Also, I had tried to go once and the wait was so long that I left and came back another time. So maybe it was unrealistic to expect that it would ever match what I had hoped for, but it wasn't all that great in my opinion.

Had the october special. It was nice to have variety, but the roll that had mango was too fruity and weird. The other 3 rolls were pretty similar to each other.

The rolls were decent, but not spectacular. The price was good.

I love their monthly specials!  My coworker and I usually take a trip once a month and I'll get the sushi monthly special and she'll get the bento monthly special and we'll share.  Food is cheap and tasty.  Haven't had a bad experience yet.  We always go around 11:30 so we beat the lines.  Only bad thing is the bathroom outside on the other side of the restaurant and the horrible parking situation.  Other than that, I love the fact you can order 4X4 or other sushi that consist of 4 pieces of 4 different rolls so you're not stuck eating 8 pieces of one roll.  I wish more sushi restaurants would have that concept...

I would give this place 5 stars if it wasn't for their parking situation and having to wait almost an hour to be seated. It has a pretty poppin' scene with a bar area and the music they play is some old school hiphop & r&b which I love. I bet if they kept this place open til 2 am it would still be poppin'!

On the downside, this is not a place for those who do not enjoy a "hiphop",
    " trendy" or college-like scene.

Their food was pretty good and VERY affordable. A lot of their sushi rolls were creative and their menu was also friendly to those who are trying out "sushi" for the first time. For 6 of us we paid about $70 and that included cocktails, drinks, appetizers, sushi and entrees.

We will definitely come back to Sushi Deli and will make sure to wear comfortable shoes because it's sure to be a long wait to be seated!

Ten things I would rather do, than to eat here:

    -Starve.
-Drink a warm 40 of King Cobra.
    -Get syphilis.
    -Go to Walmart.
    -Die.
    -Be abducted by aliens.
    -Live with my parents.
-Play fetch with a starving Tiger.
-Drive all day in the Ranch 99 parking lot.
-Go to a Celine Dion concert.

You get one star, because I have to give a star

This is my third review of Sushi Deli 3.   My last one I gave it only 2 stars due to the horrible service that I received.    I was in the area yesterday and decided to stop by and give it another try since it was just about to open.    I was surprised to find that the line was already out in the street,  found out that a party of 15 decided to have a bday party and was waiting for it to open.

Customers service was an A+!   I dont' know if they have read the dozens of crappy service reviews left on here, but yesterday they were point on.
The waiters/waitresses quickly took all the smaller parties order so that we didn't' have to wait behind the large bday crowd.    Even with the place being packed, my drink was always full and our waiter (who was also taking care of the party) stopped by 4-5 times to make sure we were doing okay.

As usual, even when the customer service sucks, the food is incredible.   I have not found another sushi restaurant in San Diego that has the same incredible quality of rolls at that low of a price.

Sorry Sushi Deli 1 & 2, looks like I'll be visiting #3 more often.

This place is kind of tucked away, you really would never just "run into it" in my opinion, lol. If you are going for happy hour/dinner arrive BEFORE 5, as there will usually already be a line outside. If you get there early enough, you should be seated with no wait. The deluxe combo is bomb dot com! so is the razztini. Two combo plates containing a total of 32 pc of sushi, one beer, one razztini, and one bottle of sake .... 35$. you can't really beat that in my opinion (yes another opinion lol) Give this place a try, chances are you'll make it a regular spot!

I just realized that i have yet to write a review for one of my favorite sushi restaurants and i literally GASPED IN SHOCK!!!!!

If you like the CA roll i highly recommend the HOT HOT CA roll, it is by far my favorite and i order it every time i come. simply DELISH. The San Diego roll is also a big fav of mine. Not to mention the garlic edamame are just down right TASTY.

    A few key points:

    - Great DELICIOUS sushi for CHEAPPPPPP, sometimes i wonder how they make $$. For example, me & my friend got 3 rolls & an order of edamame and our bill was under $25, big BONUS in my opinion.

-They have a great variety of rolls.

-B/c they are so tasty they get VERY VERY busy, their wait can vary from 20 mins to an hour. However they do have a bar (normally pretty crowded though) but at least it allows you the opportunity to get a drink (or a few) while you wait.

-They have waiting areas outside with plenty of bench space along with a few chairs and tables, also you can bring your drinks outside. BONUS

-They won't seat you without your entire party, kinda bummed me out while i was waiting for a friend, but i can understand as they get SUPER busy. They don't want any "wasted space" so to speak.

-One of the things that i wish they would change is a larger variety of booze. They only have a 1/2 bar so their selections can be sparse, i feel that they could improve their bar, but then again i'm coming here to get SUSHI WASTED lol so i deal with what they offer.

-For the most part the service has been awesome, servers are on point with taking our order correctly and promptly as well as refilling drinks on key. I've only had about 2 experiences where the server just down right SUCKED, forgot to bring our soup, lacked on refills, charged us for food we didn't order, and over charged our card. However, i'm willing to let this go as i haven't seen this server in my last few visits.

I have been to all 3 Sushi Deli's and this is by far my favorite due to the layout and atmosphere. Good bar set up, plenty of tables and booths, along with patio seating. I come here at least once a month and will continue to do so!!

Mostly positive things to say here. There Miso soup is the best. How could they perfect something as simple as Miso soup? Those little crunchies do the trick. It's comfort food... or soup. I'm not sure what they're doing to their chicken Karagge, but its awesome! I highly recommend it.

Me and my bf always over order, but when the check comes it's never more than I was expecting. I guess that's why we always go back. Drinks are good, Edamame is good, parking kinda sucks, and the wait can go either way. Still it wont keep us away.
