This place was just ok.

The good.... the fish was very good (with the exception of the salmon, which seemed "off").  Our chef was very friendly and pleasant.  Rolls were good.

Not so good... I think this place is overpriced for what it is.  About the same prices as some higher end places I've been to in NY and San Francisco, and this is not of the same caliber as those places.  (Maybe sushi on Kauai is expensive in general, it did seem like a trend....)

The sushi rice was actually pretty horrible - just wasn't cooked right or something.  Maybe we just came on an off night or something (it was a Wednesday).  Was definitely quiet when we came - we were the only two at the bar.

BEST sushi on the island...sushi chefs are awesome, very laid back and easy to talk to...if you do visit them sit at the sushi bar..best seat in the house! you can also call ahead to reserve seats at the sushi bar, I believe it can seat 7-8 people and there are also two tables inside..one for 2 people and another for 4....lots of seating outside if you prefer that instead

sushi rolls are very UNIQUE..and very very tasty....

I recommend the Golden Roll and Butter Me Up Roll..if they have available try a sashimi platter with Waru and Toro...also, dont forget to add room for dessert and try either the Bushido Balls or a Hana Hou...

the Hana Hou is deep fried ice cream rolled in panko..you can choose from regular vanilla or green tea ice cream...also, when available you can have it made with chocolate on the outside..its AWESOME!

also dont forget to try some SAKE ;) Im a sucker for the Purple Haze

prices may seem a little high but its KAUAI, what do you expect? probably one of the cheaper sushi restaurants on the island though...

Service Is A Total Nightmare -  June,  2008

The sushi here is good but not that great. It's also not worth the absolute worst service I have experienced in years. Two of us at the table of 8 waited over 2 hours to get our sushi! When we asked the waiter to check, he just made lame "we are just so busy" excuses, even though the place was less than half full. This is totally unacceptable. They also screwed up two other people's orders by not bringing miso soup and salad which was supposed to come with the main course. On person dropped a chop stick on the ground and one of the waiters put it back on the table. How's that for class? If it wasn't one of our friend's birthday I would have walked. You are not going to impress anyone here so just go down the road to Genki and get fast food quality sushi without the hassle. Oh well, my local born friends warned me  that the service can be very bad. Rumor I heard was only eat at the sush bar to get service.

Tasty sushi, service need a little work.  The sushi chef has his act together, but the staff seems to get stuff wrong.

Had some interesting rolls, and it was a bit pricey all things considered.

My husband and I were determined to find a good sushi place while on our honeymoon. I did a few searches for local places and found this place. It had some good reviews and some bad. I went hoping the good reviews were the ones we'd experience...

Well....

We arrived 30 minutes before they opened and the sushi chef came outside to tell us this. That was fine since it's located in a strip mall so we killed time wandering around. Well 30 minutes pass and we walk back over there. "Not quite yet" a waiter says barely even glancing our way... We hang out in the area for a total of 30 minutes pass their opening time. By this time another couple has come and seated themselves so we do the same. The that same couple went and got their own menu. This is probably the point where we should've left but instead we got a menu ourselves too. The whole time a guy who had the look of an owner kept walking in and out to smoke and wouldn't even acknowledge anyone what-so-ever.

Finally the same waiter from before comes and gives us water in a seemingly stoned state. He barely talked to us and was difficult to understand. He also looked super annoyed. I never once complained about the late opening and I continued to make sure I was being very nice and not showing my annoyance.

We ordered some sushi and I asked for a teriyaki chicken dish as well. For the reviews we had read we were horribly disappointed with the quality of the sushi here. Also the chicken teriyaki was awful and cost twice as much as some of the rolls we ordered. I was appalled. We're sitting here looking at the ocean and the food sucks.

Overall we left with a very bad taste in our mouth. I would NEVER go here again.

This place totally sucks...I've been here with my family a couple times and the first time I went here I kinda remember liking it, but when I went here this past weekend I was totally dissapointed.

The rolls are okay, but they come at a hefty price like $13. Also their menu selection is pretty shitty, they don't even have good dinner combinations/bentos. I had the "bushido spears" and it was loaded with msg and tasted like crap. My cousin had the chicken teriyaki soba salad and the soba was all mushy and there was hardly any dressing! My sister had the tempura combination w/ tofu..first off they forgot to bring the tofu and the vegetable variety was shitty too cuz there wasn't even sweet potato! This is definitely a touristy sushi joint..and I probably won't be returning here in the near future.

Also they're not all that friendly here either, we sat at the sushi bar and they don't even try to make conversation at all..and the sushi chef didn't even know that they have bluefin tuna in hawaii! What the crazy?

Cool Japanese atmosphere inside and great sushi! Entrée's are so-so. The sushi chef is really laid back and funny, he gave us some special rolls he just made up in his head. This would be a 5 if the entree's were better. Come for sushi!

My wife and I were looking for good sushi and could not find anything great on Trip Advisor. One of the locals had recommended Kintaro's, but many reviews seemed to wonder why anyone recommended this place.

Someone had mentioned Sushi Bushido to us. I was unsure and called our hotel front desk and asked them for a recommendation. Without hesitation, I was told Bushidos was "excellent, excellent."

I was a bit skeptical because the restaurant is located in the shopping center adjacent to where the cruise ships dock. I figured it would be a touristy place. Still, we moved forward and decided to eat here. It was a bit hard to find, but it is on the ocean side of the shopping center where the ABC store is at.

The restaurant is a small hole in the wall, nothing fancy, but it is clean and has a touch of asian flair to it. We sat at the sushi bar, it was not too crowded. The place is open air, so the breeze blew through. It is very close to the water. There is outdoor dining where you can see Niwiliwili Harbor.

I had a combo sushi plate (chef's selection) that contained a variety of fresh local fish. All of it was excellent. Something unique that stood out was "super white tuna" which they called Saku Walu. Also had the octopus, which was cooked just right. The chef (Victor who is also the owner) also made up some things for my wife and I to try.

The also had a full menu, with tempura and what not, but I was in the mood for fish so I cannot comment on the rest of their menu.

I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, some good and some bad. Sushi Bushido does stand up to some of the great sushi eateries I have been at.

All in all, this place really hit the spot for us.

We had lunch there and was very disappointed with the service and the food.  First of all, it took the server a good 15 mins before they served us.  Once he arrived, we quickly order two salads, as they had a full page of salads to choose from.  We were quickly turned down, "No lettuce" .....no Lettuce?!  I then ask for Chicken katsu.....out again.  So I finally chose the Teriyaki Chicken.....horrifically prepared!  Seemed like it was baked and then thrown on the grill to add some grill marks.  The only good thing was the Spicy Hamachi roll which I ordered.  This I would recommend if you do plan to visit.

Note: the portions are small.

I really liked this place, even though I found it a bit overpriced.  I dined by myself - had a couple of rolls and a seaweed salad and my bill was almost $50!  The restaurant is pretty tiny and incredibly hard to find.  I dined inside on the bar and that was really fun.  The sushi chef was super nice and it was fun to watch him make the rolls.  I had a Kauai roll (papaya, eel, macadamia nuts - OMG sooooo goood) and a rainbow roll and both were pretty awesome - fresh and tasty.  The servers weren't great at service but the sushi chef's attitude and pride in his work totally made up for it.

First I was enthused about going here, then I was nervous, and finally I was relieved. I'd read on Yelp that it was good, and despite -- or maybe because of -- the fact that it wasn't written up in any of our guidebooks, I wanted to give it a shot. The complete disinterest on the part of the male server that greeted our arrival did not inspire me, though. We couldn't get seated. We couldn't even get eye contact.

Then went to sit at the sushi bar and got friendly attention from the sushi chefs. These two guys took our orders, gave us our food, and rolled their eyes at the bumbling waiter behind his back. I mostly enjoyed my rolls, too, especially the kampachi and other island fish whose name I've forgotten. Tasty sunemono with radish and carrots. J. didn't love her maki, and my was fine but not memorable. Typical wakame salad. Happily, the female server, although harried, made sure our check got processed in a decent amount of time.

I have to say, if it wasn't for the abysmal treatment we encountered at the start of our visit, I might give this place four stars. But, you know, service does count, and you need to get decent staff.

The locals go to Kintaro's for good sushi when they're having a party. They go to Sushi Bushido to get the same for half the price.  Sushi Bushido is more intimate and shorter wait times. Depending on the server, the service can be inconsistent, but remember where you are. Get rid of the mainland mentality. Nobody cares who you are, where you live and how much money you make. You are a guest here.  If you act like a guest, have respect for the people who live and work here, you will find your Aloha.

My favorites are the tempura, the Kaua'i Roll, the Aloha Roll and some specialty rolls, like the Kimi or the Tropical Roll (Eel and bananas).

Great local sushi restaurant close to Lihue Airport in Kauai.  I was surprised to find that it had been open for years and never knew it was there...right on the ocean across from  Dukes at the Mariott.  Excellent quality sashimi and local fish to Kauai.  Victor, the owner is very personable as is Ken... his right hand man.  Don't expect to find elaborate japanese style design and little Japanese waitresses running around taking your order though... this is more Kauaian style and laid back.  Toro, Hamachi, Unagi, Uni, Saba... are all fresh.  The beer is cold and service is decent.  Their selection of cold sake is dismal.

Perhaps if we had been walking around the shopping center at this Janky little strip mall No- we wouldn't have gone to the little ugly strip mall this place was hidden "deep in the bowels" of. We did what we always do... ask!  We talked with a local, asked about good local sushi, we had a choice, the small oilcloth table paper napkin place, or the very upscale big with tourists.  Hey! WHY do we ask? No mistakes here- It was only around 4-4:30 so they were doing only sushi, not their full menu.  We stepped inside to ask the chef if they did Hamachi Kama (not on the menu) A very large quiet fellow I perceived to be the owner went to the refrigerator and nodded his head silently to the chef.  OH BOY!  The BEST ever!  The rolls here were so amazing!  He did one that was panko encrusted and deep fried that was filled with ahi, papaya, mac nuts, unagi sauce... Sent me to the clouds!  My hubby's fave was the ahi poke roll which had a very quick sear on the outside.
another, the classic crispy salmon skin kula greens and other goodies that got eaten so fast i can't remember the rest!  This chef is way beyond the place he is working in, He should be in some very high traffic well known place for how good he is!

I can't say enough good things about Sushi Bushido and the chef and owner Victor Heresa.  Situated near Lihue Airport in Nawiliwili Bay, you can spend the day surfing baby waves on Kalapaki Beach nearby or boogie-boarding if you're not a surfer, and walk to Sushi Bushido in just a matter of minutes.  The hamachi is excellent, the anago and unagi are freshly-caught, the nama-sake, the maguro, everything I tried there while living on Kaua'i was incredible.  Limited seating is my only complaint and they do close earlier than I would like, but the outdoor seating with a view of the beach makes up for these minor issues.  I will be visiting Kaua'i for New Year's and will most definitely be making a visit to Victor's place again.  There's no better sushi on Kaua'i, stay away from the joint up the road in Kapa'a, just sub-standard sushi to be found there.  And please, do not try the spam sushi that can be found in just about any ABC store along the road(they have very few 7-11's in Hawai'i), spam sushi is one of the most disgusting things I've ever eaten.  You cannot miss with Sushi Bushido, so, for your next stay, whether you're situated in Poipu or Princeville, the drive is only a good 15 min. to Sushi Bushido in Nawiliwili Bay and  you're bound to love everything about it.  There's a nice Hawai'ian curio/jewelry store in the same shopping mall as well as a nearby bar called Nawiliwili Tavern.  Just be careful not to anger the Samoans there, Haoles are not looked upon fondly as a general rule in Hawai'i, but most especially on Kau'ai.  Aloha and Mahalo for listening to my rant...

this place is awesome ... at first glance the red wall with paintings of among others the owner, two sushi chefs, and a famous fashion designer seemed like a distraction but by the end of the first visit (out of five in a week) the wall had become the focal point for this funky place hidden on the backside of a tourist trap mall (the color painting of Victor Hersa by Sarah Wymer is brilliant!)... the hamachi and maguro were excellent and lots of great rolls to choose from ... Butter Me Up Roll with tuna tempura and avocado topped with fresh salmon and wasabi garlic herbal butter ... Lava Roll with scallop, crab, and shrimp mixed with yellow tail, cucumber, gobo, avocado, wrapped with fresh salmon and topped with sake aioli and baked and served on an avocado unagi aioli and topped with bonito flakes ... these guys are artists! ... Kauai Gold Roll with unagi, papaya, and avocado rolled in seasoned panko and served tempura style topped with unagi pina colada sauce ... the Bushido Rainbow Roll with crab, avocado, and cucumber topped with five types of fish then torched (literally!) and sprinkled with tobiko, bonito flakes, green onions and a splash of Heresa's special sauce ... and best of all the Bushido Roll with tuna marinated in a sweet ginger shoyu sauce topped with blackened tuna and a splash of the same special sauce! ... make sure you get there early and get a seat at the sushi bar!
