16 reviews for Sushi a la Kawa
The reviews are right. They DO deliver FAST! I've had much better, still prefer ISE for sushi takeout in the area. The eel/avocado roll here was better but the spicy tuna was lackluster IMO. I think I'm done.
-Spicy Tuna, Spicy Salmon, Spicy White Tuna ($14.50) - came w/ miso soup
-Spicy Tuna, California, & Eel Avocado Roll ($14) - came w/ miso soup
Total came out to $16/pp after everything
Sushi is only ok, and not worth the lack of customer service given the scads of sushi restaurants in the neighborhood.
Pros:
--Don't use a lot of rice on their rolls
--Fast
--Ok sushi
Cons:
--Terrible customer service. There are so many sushi places downtown its
not worth it if they're not very nice.
I've been getting sushi for lunch a few times a month there for a while, but I'm going to try a new place now. Yesterday I ordered a yellowtail scallion roll and it was partly solid fish and partly mushy fish. I won't eat raw fish that seems at all suspicious. I brought back my half eaten roll and the woman wouldn't give me a new roll. Incredibly lame.)
THANK YOU a la Kawa! You're a life saver in the takeout waste land that is the Financial District. Pretty good sushi and sashimi for a great price, oh yeah, and really fast.
This review is for the take-out/delivery area not the restaurant.
I've had their Maki rolls at least in three occasions and it always failed to impress me - the taste is just bland. But to be completely fair, I usually just order a combination involving shrimp, avocado, crab meat or vegetable since I'm not a big fan of raw fish.
They about 16 special maki combination on their menu for those who are real fans but the taste is questionable.
I've been working in the area for two years now. I used to like this place a lot before they had renovations this year. Renovations are supposed to make the place better, right?
Not this one.
They changed their name, and only the new delivery-only store down the block kept the 'a la Kawa' name. The re-opened one, at 18 Maiden Lane, (can't recall the name) totally lost the charm, good prices and meal sizes. And what happened to the friendly staff?
In the rainiest day of the year, I felt like having delicious udon soup. I went there for lunch and oh man...
I am a soup lover. I believe it's hard to make a bad soup. But they managed to! The shrimp udon, as well as the chicken udon my friend had, were absolutely... tasteless. meh. I only ate it cause I was hungry. It tasted like nothing.
I used to be a frequent client. Will never go back. I am glad I found ISE, a delicious quite authentic japanese in the area.
Not sure what all the hate on this place is about - it is a takeout sushi place, for goodness' sake. It is super cheap, perfectly fresh, and reasonably tasty (especially for the price!) - and this is coming from a major sushi addict. This not the place to go for serious food, but at $7.50 for a lunch special do I seriously need to tell you that?
Have had typical maki here - salmon avocado, etc - and it's decent-sized and tastes fresh. Their version of spicy is pretty good and spicy, which I really like. The cooked food is also fine with surprisingly fresh veggies. My major criticism would be the salad dressing - I normally really enjoy that Japanese orange goodness, but this was not it. Sort of sweet. Not sure what was up with that.
All in all though a perfectly acceptable spot for lunch delivery in the area. Definitely getting added to my office rotation.
After we finished our Indian curry chicken.. we move to sushi. I will say it is a OK place for lunch beause the quantity and price are in good range.
The sushi might need a little more rice and the service is quick.
Just a little take out place but still! I liked it very much and found the tonkatsu donburi pretty authentic. With Japanese pickles and juicy pork.
I don't like oyako donburi because it's chicken and egg and they call it oyako meaning parent and child and that's too sad for me.
Did you know that in Japan they call Wisdom Teeth "Oyashirazu" ? It kind of means "parents don't know it" because you get your wisdom teeth after your parents die usually (or at least in pre-war Japan).
Anyway, the decor is cute with all different paper umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and it's bright and clean.
For the longest time I refused to try sushi. You know, the typical arguments about skeezing out about raw fish, whatever. This place opened up directly across the street from my apartment at the time and shamed me into trying sushi. When it first opened, it was only half the size it is now, with only four tables. After trying a few simple maki rolls, I was hooked. The craving started and sushi from Sushi A La Kawa became a weekly staple.
The service is wonderful and the fish has always been fresh and tasty. Though I moved across downtown to the Battery Park area, I still order from there when I want sushi. They are simply one of the better sushi places downtown. Don't try to compare them to Megu or other superstars, but for local sushi for takeout or delivery, they can't be beat. They are One of my favorites and will always be fondly remembered for popping my sushi cherry.
I can order here and have it delivered in 10 minutes. I don't know how they do it when the restaurant is 11 minutes away. They're fast. The sushi is good. They have yellow hued ginger, not that artificial oranged kind.
I'm surprised that nobodys reviewed this place yet. Granted it is right next door to me but I think this place is great. I had never had sushi really until about three months ago and now I crave it like three times a week. I like the people here. They all seem very young and as with my other reviews I'm a sucker for people that run a friendly business. They remember my preferred drink when I come and always welcome me with a smile. Very important. I'm not going to get all sushi gourmet here and tell you what I like because I'm still a beginner but everything I've had was really good. I prefer the black pepper tuna roll. Not sure if there are other places down here for good sushi but I can't imagine it being any better than this. And they are always open.
The service here is excellent, and the sushi just as tasty. The dining room is always clean, and it's beautifully decorated -- rice paper umbrellas adorn the ceiling, and the mural border around the entire room never repeats! The sushi/sashimi platter for two is expertly plated and fun for a date. I also order take-out at least once a week and have never been disappointed. Try their peanut-avocado roll, spicy tuna crunch or futo maki. Skip the salad, though - too much ginger dressing over iceberg.
I don't know about the sushi but the yakisoba and udon are depressingly bland.
It's a bit of a walk from my office but the quality was good and the sushi was fresh. We hit the late lunch crowd but the host did a good job of nicely getting us to a table quickly. Had a good mix of spicy rolls and enjoyed them.
Great local sushi joint to check out, particularly if you live down in the Financial District. Delivery is lightning quick, and the food is pretty damn good for the price. Nothing to write home about, but a great place to go if you want a quick, satisfying meal of sushi. I took my young cousin from India here since we were in a rush and he'd never had Japanese food before, and he loved it. I must eat here at least once ever 2 or 3 weeks since take-out gets old, I don't want to schlep anywhere and I want something reasonably priced, and this always fits the bill. Definitely a good stand-by sushi place for when you just aren't feeling that adventurous.
This place got a lot to offer, sashimi its super fresh, tempura/fried food is not oil dripping, base soup is tasty. Their tempura green tea icecream is awesum! It has thin layer chocolate cake lined under the tempura dough, reason why makes its so good! The delivery was insanely fast...I called them @12:40, they were here in 20 mins, my office is couple blocks away so I guess that's why :P
