Suruki is one of my favorite Japanese markets, but I wish it wasn't so far away from home. They have a fantastic selection of fresh and high quality fish for sashimi and a good variety of deli items, such as octopus salad and wakame.
During my most recent visit, my friends and I ordered over 200 pieces of sashimi, which included salmon, toro, hamachi, sake, and kampachi. We also got a tray of uni, monkfish liver, and amaebi (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). What I really liked was how the fish cutters offered samples and how they even cut the fish and placed it on a huge platter for us. Everything tasted great and was affordable. If you ever consider having sushi night at home, I recommend coming to Suruki! -

* Great bento boxes togo *
In the spring and summer when the weather is warm, we love grabbing a bento box lunch from this place and walking over to central park (1 block away) to enjoy our lunch. A great value and terrific setting. This market is clean and the cashiers are pleasant. -

I lovee Suruki Supermarket!
My coworker showed me this place earlier this week for lunch and i feel in love right away. I live in the peninsula and can't believe I didn't know about this place earlier! This hole-in-the-wall market will satisfy all your Japanese food cravings. They have a vast variety of sushi, nigiri, fresh fish and warm foods as soon as you walk into the door.
Along with their selection of foods, they are priced relatively cheap compared to other japanese markets. For example, I bought their sushi combo box for lunch and was full for a price of $8.95! Not bad for sushi! Also, they have an incredible 50% discount on their sushi and warm foods starting after 6pm or so! You can definitely get a basket-full of sushi and japanese treats for under $10! *Note: Be sure to get there early for their "happy hour" before they run out of your favorite treats!
Suruki Supermart, how did I ever live without you for all these years! I will definitely frequent this market every time I'm near San Mateo.Listed in: The Peninsula Cheat Sheet

san mateo's answer to nijiya market. Granted their food choice here isn't as vast as Nijiya, they seem to have all the staples - sushi, donburi etc.
The prices are pretty decent & the cool thing is that they have warm food available as oppose to some markets where they put all the food in the refrigerator.
The market did seem a tad smaller than Nijiya & had a smaller selection, but still they had plenty of goodies in there! -

one of the THE BEST japanese markets ever been to!
Fairly priced sushi rolls are are made FRESH and they also have some half of deal after 5pm i think? Fresh fish available daily and you can always get some fresh sashimi by asking them to cut them into pieces for you
I WANT SOME NOW -

What a wonderful place to buy bento boxes! I ordered 23 Bento boxes yesterday afternoon, and asked if I could pick them up today at noon. They were there, ready, beautiful, delicious, fresh, and individually packed. I was so thrilled. The staff are efficient and very friendly, and so helpful. They carried out the box of bento boxes to my car, since parking can be tough at noon. Their prices are so fair and the quality of the food is high. I would give them 10 stars if I could. They are just fantastic.

Review from Wendy L.
Suruki greater Ninjiya SF. Ok, I like Ninjiya SF too (they have more variety of things). It's more like Suruki = Ninjiya. But I think Suruki has a little edge as far as freshness in fish goes. This tells you two things, I'm a bad mathematician but at least I have a tongue that knows freshness and Suruki definitely has it.
When a friend of mine did a Japanese night and told me she got all her ingredients from Suruki, I didn't believe that you could get this fresh grade of fish at a supermarket. But she proved me wrong. Upon stepping towards the back of the store, my eyes lit at the amazing options they had: uni (!!!), amaebi, kanpachi, marinated miso black cod, seabass, ankimo, tobiko, ikura, wakame salad and other Japanese seafood variations, just to name a few. They have stuff pre-cut in the aisle next to the fish guys or you can custom request how much you want cut right before your eyes. OMG did I die and go to heaven?
I bought some very glistened and radiant pink salmon, uni, ikura, and tobiko. And my goodness, they pretty much all tasted fresh. The best was the tobiko, it was so sweet. I did a 'jello-shot' of it when I got home and then I struggled to lick every little orange tobiko. SUCCESS! It was that damn finger lickin' good. Also, the fish isn't as expensive as it would if you got it from a restaurant. Quality grade box of uni cost me only $8.50. At any restaurant, they would charge like $9-14 bucks for half that. Also they have a lot of ankimo for $6 bucks. Ridiculous bargain. They also have a cooked food side, which have pretty good 1/2 off deals per some prior yelp reviews. But I haven't had the privilege to check it out.
Suruki, you are too far from me but rest assured every time I frequent have to the bay, I will bringing out my cooler each time to fill it with your amazing fish. YUM!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love Suruki :) I usually come here to buy the to-go snacks/bentos and it`s all really good and delicious. What I also love the most about here, is that their items are cheaper then any other markets I go to. I don`t shop here because it`s far, but I would if I could :)

I have been a customer for more than 20 years. I love this place. However, the quality of shabu shabu beef has been going down in the past couple years. Now there are too much fat (and some tendon?) and some packages even come with small broken pieces. The meat is a bit too chewy.
This place deserve a five star but I have to minus one star for the quality of the meat.
I hope the younger generation of the management is listening and will again provide quality shabu shabu beef. I will definately raise the star back to a five again when I see improvement. -

Suruki is usually my first choice for lunch. It's fast, convenient, and has a lot of different choices. The staff is very friendly as well.
My favorites are the inari boxes, soy beans and the chicken yakitori. The prepared food selection changes on a frequent basis. Some of the prepared meat can be on the saltier side, though. I tend to stay away from the teriyaki + rice plates for this reason. This is just a personal preference. If you pay attention to the prices of each item, you can put together a robust healthy meal for ~$7 or so. -

Staff was super kind. We were driving from out of town and arrived right at closing time. We called 15 minutes ahead of time; they accepted an order to cut red tuna for us so that we can pick it up right as they were closing up! What a great, friendly business!
I'm tried fish at lots of supermarket. Suruki has the freshest and best tasting sashimi and sushi rolls. The price is very reasonable too. I will be visiting whenever I'm in San Mateo! :) -

Lunch bentos when you want a quick bite. Always good. They also have udons, sushi boxes, nigiris...and usually they're quite decent, and at a reasonable price too.
Makes me miss the Asian 7-11s that stock these things. -

This place is really great! My boyfriend and I went in recently looking for some fresh fish. We were not disappointed! Great prices!!
We ordered sashimi: salmon, tuna, hamachi, and scallop. The guy behind the counter even cut it for us fresh from the case!
We purchased a few other items: mochi, tempura batter, frozen edamame.
The only negative thing I have to say is that the mochi we purchased was obviously old or improperly stored which is slightly concerning because who knows what else in the store is like that. Also some of the pre-made rolls and chicken teriyaki where just sitting out at room temperature on a shelf. The fish tasted fresh though so no worries there.
I would definitely recommend this place, but I think next time we will just go out to sushi, less work and clean up! -

Love this neighborhood Japanese grocery store!
We come here often for their great selection of bento boxes and sushi rolls - perfect for lazy take-to-work lunches or dinners. My favorite snack from here is delicious salmon rice onigiri!
And I can't walk out of here without getting a pint of maeda-en green tea or red bean ice cream -- the best! -

My favorite little market in this neighborhood!
The food items I purchase from this place are the sushi rolls, chirashi sushi, bento boxes, tea and mochi.
I picked up some strawberry mochi today and can tell it is going to be gone fast! -

San Mateo, CA
This plae is absolutely great for grabbing a delicious bento lunch and walking a few blocks to picnic in San Mateo's Central Park. I also adore their grilled fish, which is mostly split between a refrigerated shelf near the front and a room-temperature table in the back right corner-- if you get there reasonably soon after they've set out a new batch, the fish are still warm and succulent; the cold ones are yummy too, though. They also have interesting grilled bony fish bits which I assume are useful for making soup or something like that.
There's a manned fresh fish counter in the back. I haven't bought anything from that section, but they seem spotless and have no fishy-smelling emanations like the fish counters at some of the local Asian megamarts. There's a fresh produce section which I haven't looked at much. They have produce. It seems fresh. I always get distracted by the freezer cases on the opposite side of that aisle.
They used to keep more of their bento boxes at room temperature-- maybe they still do at certain parts of the day but have started moving them to the fridge before the usual time I amble into there. They do have huge fresh mochi with fillings ranging from red bean to Nutella, and Japanese-style mini-sandwiches of sliced bread rolls crammed with odd things like potato croquettes or spaghetti (for all your carb-stuffed carby needs). There's also a small case of pre-heated foods such as rice bowls, more grilled fish, more croquettes, yakitori, and takoyaki.
I'd go here more often if it was a bit more convenient to me-- most of the nearby parking is metered along the street or in city parking garages. I keep meaning to check out the legendary bento-clearance blowout every evening, but have been too afraid to face the carnage. -

Absolutely love this place!! discovered it when we moved to the area -- it is freaking awesome! So many good treats for reasonable prices (I think).
The fish is definitely expensive as it is sushi grade. I will try it one day but until then I will grab all the snacks, juices and veggies off of the shelf! -

I have shopped here for noodles and will shop for other things in the future as I love Japanese and Asian food for that matter. But, twice I have gotten take out from their fast food area and it has always been wonderful. The chicken teryaki, alone or in a bento box is excl lent; tender with a sweet teryaki sauce, not too much or too little; the rice is firm not soggy, and the miso soup is sweet and salty and plain aromatic. For $10.95, it is a great deal and I will definitely return to try the gyoza and other favorites. The service is friendly and efficient. So, for some good Japanese groceries and fast food at reasonable prices, Serruki cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.!

Love this spot.
Go here for:
-Fresh sashimi
-sushi rolls
-rice bowls
and more....
They package everything so it's quick and easy to grab on the go. Everything is usually very fresh and CHEAP!! I always get salmon sashimi here and you can get about 10 pieces (~0.5lbs) for $5-6. I love their unagi donburi and spicy tuna rolls. -
Review from Rob Y.
Set your alarm for 5.45...PM. And you'll need to line up at Suruki for the half off hot case and sushi sashimi deal. The rules are no pushing, shoving or running so for tall lanky people like me, I can stride quick, reach over the short people and grab the food I want. Incredibly cheap at 50% off (i've gotten toro, sashimi dinners, various don bowls and other stuff here before), it makes a great meal. If you end up with nothing, keep trolling around a bit because people usually grab anything they can and end up putting some stuff back for others.

Family owned, cute Japanese market,if you need to find fresh fish for sashimi, sushi, or any Japanese specialty food items, this is the place to go to in San Mateo. they also have prepared foods like bento boxes, sushi rolls, cuts of sashimi. My favorite here is the spicy tuna bowl. It's like crack, so addicting. They only make it once in awhile. I usually call in to preorder it, so fresh. They stop preparing and making food around 1-2ish pm, so call ahead of time.
About an hour before closing, Suruki has a 50% off deal on most of their prepared foods that have not been bought throughout the day, like their bento boxes, onigiris, cooked fish, sushi, sashimi, etc. It get's pretty crazy, people usually like up 30 minutes before they announce their 50% off specials. All the people lined up, and when they make the announcement, you get whatever you can grab. You see people, like me, strategizing on what items I want. It's like that game show, Supermarket Sweep. -

Man oh man. People are so cheap sometimes and have no consideration for small businesses! My heart went out to the owner. 15 minutes before their 50% off the Bento packages went on sale, people were forming lines. Time is precious. Just buy it at regular price and move on with your lives people! Sheesh! I know times are tough but if you want small businesses to stay in business you need to support them, not suck the blood out of them. Small businesses are NOT Wal-Mart! Leeches.
We always get the fresh sashimi here. It's always been a hit at every event we brought it to or a great addition to the dinners we host at home. Highly recommend! -

So after having Ramen just across the street from this Supermarket with my cousins, I decided to take a quick look around this place.
There was everything you needed here! This place may be a bit pricey, but I guess it's worth it.
They have ready-served sushi, desserts, and all the supplies here.
I love this store, and it's just right down El Camino which means I can easily just take a bus down here in about 20 minutes. The next time I plan on making a Japanese cuisine, I plan on coming here for groceries! -

Wow. THAT was intense.
Made it here at 6pm to partake in the 50% discounted prepared foods rush that starts daily at 6:10pm. We competed against many other worthy opponents for our dinner and did pretty well for rookies. We ended up with hamachi, salmon, spicy tuna, two nigiri combos, salmon teriyaki, a peanut butter mochi, and a red bean mochi. that and a few other things from the supermarket all for just under $30!
A fun, cheap, and delicious dinner that turned out to be a rewarding experience. You never know what you're going to get, but it's fun rushing in and grabbing anything that looks good. We'll definitely be back for more. -

I was craving sake sashimi and the boyfriend didn't want to drive to our usual spot in Cupertino, so we decided to try sashimi at Suruki's. We walked in at about 5:30 pm on a Sunday and there was a line forming at the door. It looked like a Black Friday sale on a Sunday!
To the surprise of my boyfriend, he heard bento boxes were half off and went at it. We picked up a few, but had to choose carefully as some seemed to sitting for awhile.
We headed to the back of the store where we hit sashimi heaven! Looking at the prepacked sashimi in the fridge was not too appetizing, so we asked the deli to slice us up a pound of salmon. We couldn't wait to get home to rip apart the tray! We had to pick up ginger and soy sauce since the salmon only came with fresh wasabi. We also bought seaweed salad and a tray of monkfish liver.
Wow! Everything was soo fresh and good. The bento boxes were ok, but the sashimi was amazingly good! I'll be coming back for more!!! -
Review from Joanne G.
6:10 pm, Saruki. Show up, line up, wait for the manager to come by and start slashing prices. And then? Ready...set....go! Behold the all out purchasing frenzy in the deli section!
Please, no pushing unless you want to get thrown out of the store without your dinner. With that said, still watch out for stray elbows and those wielding shopping baskets.
Sushi and sashimi bento boxes, tuna poke bowls, chicken karage, potato croquettes, salmon onigiri, spam musubi, nutella + peanut butter mochi.
$50 later and we'd accidentally picked up so much food that it lasted for three entirely gluttonous meals. And all of it was so incredibly delicious. Especially you, nutella mochi.
From a supermarket, no less! So yeah, 6:10 pm. Great sushi, half off. Go check it out, you won't be disappointed. -

This is our go-to store for Japanese cooking supplies, Japanese food and sashimi-grade fish. It's a small store but they use their space efficiently and pack so much in there. I think their prices are a little higher so I only get the things I can only get from there.
The vegetables are fresh and packaged well. Their bentos are good and they also have food in the warmer (fried chicken wings, karaage, teriyaki, etc). My kids love spam musubi and those oversized musubis with the really large piece of nori. We usually can't wait until their half-off sale starts at 5:30 but that is quite a deal! They have uncooked but seasoned fish that are ready to be broiled. Great price and a quick meal. I usually don't leave without a tray of shio salmon to toss in the freezer for dinner some other day.
The sashimi is delicious. It's pricey but it's certainly better than going to a restaurant and buying two pieces of sushi for $4.50. They will slice it for you if you wish and put it very neatly in a display tray w/ garnish, ginger and wasabi. And seriously, there are Hispanic dudes that have been working there for so long their Japanese is better than mine.
Customer service at this store is great. One time, the person checking me out heard my mom and I talking about a dish and realized I grabbed the wrong sauce and had someone grab me the right one! When I buy a lot, someone walks me to my car to help carry my bags. They are so helpful.
If you plan on roasting a chicken and making a green salad, don't go here. You're better off at Safeway. But if you want ingredients to make sukiyaki, donburi, sushi, shio salmon, shabu shabu or a nice bowl of ramen, this is the place to shop. Also, for all the new year's food, this is where I shop. I place my order for mochi here too for my ozoni. yuummy! -

I've never came by for the 6PM rush for cheap slashed prices. But I am more than satisfied with their ready-to-eat dishes as is. They are definitely reasonably priced and everything is FRESH - no pre-frozen fish here. You can choose from rice plates, bento boxes, rolls, spam musubis, onigiri, veggies, sashimi, etc. I come here when I want to grab a really quick lunch, and it takes almost no time at all because the cashiers are very quick and it only costs me roughly 6 bucks. Of course there's the typical market; it's not very big but just about everything you need to eat.
