New Orleans, LA
If you're reading this at any time before 2pm and haven't eaten in a while, please stop and head directly to Surrey's.
Surrey's is terrific. Here are a few reasons why:
- the coffee tastes great hot or cold
- the tortillas are warm and delicious
- the servers are polite about moving a lot of people through during busy times
- I've seen a wide variety of residents of this fair city come through while I was there. Definitely a wide appeal if you're looking for a place that suits everyone's brunch needs.
- let's go back to the migas for a second. their migas single-handedly inspired me to repeatedly try to make my own migas that was even half as good.
- I haven't tried the juices yet, but you've got to have some serious guts to offer kale juice as a special. I respect that.
BEWARE: the banana pancake is monstrous and not to be taken lightly. also, it's cash only.
FWIW, everything I've written here also applies to their new location further uptown. -

There was a wait but it was a late Sunday morning, so it was to be expected. The hostess was nice enough to let us have (really tasty) coffee while we waited. The bulk of the restaurant seems to be the kitchen, while the tables are confined to a narrow hallway-ish area. Difficult not to hear other tables' conversations, as you are practically knee-to-knee with your neighbors. Despite it being so busy, we had basically decent service by a waitress wearing some kind of fanny-pack belt. Ah New Orleans hipsters.
I don't remember the exact name of my order, but it was some kind of Costa Rican style of breakfast bowl, with rice, beans, eggs, etc. I'm gonna take a leap and say it was the Costa Rica bowl, but then again I could be dead wrong. Although the rest of my group seemed really pleased with their orders, I found my food to be somewhat bland. Eh well, that wasn't anything that Crystal hot sauce couldn't cure I guess.
Maybe I just ordered the wrong meal, because everybody else's food looked great. Don't you hate it when that happens?
Anyway, there's great service in a boisterous atmosphere here. I'm gonna give it another go some other time. But take it from me kids, try it out just don't get whatever the hell I ordered. -
Review from Ana P.
OMG!! To start off, this place blew my socks off when I received my orange juice... sure it was a little pricey for $5, but really.... once you take a sip, it's like you've died and gone to heaven. The oj is just out of this world. It's fresh, pulpy, sweet, and brighter than most ojs, but then again this is not from a bottle it was squeezed by the gods.
Anyway onto the main course, I ended up ordering the Boudin Breakfast Biscuit.... since this trip to NOLA I have been introduced to and obsessed with boudin balls. My fiance ordered the shrimp and grits, which I have heard its just awesome.
So we both get our dishes and they are huge, my breakfast included one large biscuit with two sunny side up eggs, two boudin balls and hash-browns. The combination of the biscuit (which was a tasty dense variety), the egg, and the boudin balls was just delicious. I almost ate all of it but decided to share before my stomach burst... soooo good! The hash-browns were cut up red potatoes baked or sauteed with a lot of seasoning. I kind of didn't care too much for them because they were just too spicy for me (maybe too much pepper?) But then again this is New Orleans so lots of pepper is the norm, but personally I was not a fan. I kind of wished I had ordered the side grits instead. Which, not takes me to the taste I had of the shrimp and grits. This was extremely good, the shrimp were perfecty cooked and seasoned, the sauce that accompanied it was very savory and tasty. This was then garnished with chopped scallions, bacon and bread on the side. The presentation was impeccable.
The service was very attentive and always checked if we needed more coffee or water. We also got our food rather quickly despite it being really crowded (we waited 15 minutes to get a table, but by the time we left it was about a 30 min wait) The bathroom (1 unisex) was clean and their ATM was working since this is a cash only establishment.
Either way, this place exceeded my expectations and honestly I think I will have dreams about my boudin biscuit breakfast. Next time I head back to New Orleans, I will refuse to leave without hitting this place up. -

God love my husband. He wanted to find the place the locals went to brunch while we were in New Orleans. First let me start by saying it was a long mile walk from the french quarter, but SOOO worth it!!
Their fresh juice was by far the best juice I have ever had some places claim to have fresh juice however nothing compares to this place.
Then on to the food never have a been to a place where I wanted every single item on the menu!! I ended up closing my eyes and picking the bananas foster french toast.
It was by far some of the best french toast I have ever had.. and now I want a piece!
Only think to be careful about is this place is CASH ONLY (but they do have an ATM inside so it isn't that much of a pain)
Next time I am in New Orleans I may just step off the plane hop in the cab and say take me to Surrey's! -

YUMMMMM...
I saw Surrey's on the Travel Channel once and they recommended the bagel and lox. YES. It was awesome! Cute, cute inside, outside dining area. Kitchy servers. Great, fresh food. Slightly pricey but worth it.
My only gripe is that they don't accept credit card. They have an ATM on site for a ridiculous fee. Surrey if you're reading this, please get with the times and take credit card, EVEN I CAN ACCEPT CC WITH MY iPHONE. -
Review from Lan D.
This place was simply amazing. I even liked the things I didn't like about it. For instance, the wait was very long and the space is very small, but that gives it an authentic New Orleans vibe that I like. This is a place that locals frequent, not tourists. Also, I generally don't like French Toast. But as I ordered their Banana Fosters French Toast caught my eye and I thought it was time to reevaluate my relationship with French Toast, so I ordered it. They use baguettes to make their French Toast, and it was quite good. I still don't think I'm sold on typical French Toast, but it's good here. Additionally, I ordered hash browns as a side. What they call hash browns are really home fries. (I wanted thinly cut potatoes fried together into a "hash." They gave me short stubby potato wedges.) But still, they were delicious so I got over my texture issue.
Service here is prompt and friendly. The juices here are also delicious, but ridiculously overpriced. $5-6 for a 12-16 ounce glass of juice. Organic fruit be damned, that's too much to pay for just a glass. But still, it was good so while I do feel a little ripped off, at least I enjoyed it.
Finally, this place is cash only. There's an ATM in the back, but they should displace a more prominent sign that this establishment is cash only. That is really my only true gripe with this place. -

First, if you want fresh squeezed juice, this it's your place. I had the OJ. Also, had the corned beef hash and eggs; I've had better but not in some time. Had to wait a little while but it wasn't a big deal. The atmosphere reminded me of Magnolia café in Austin.

Extremely good. Fantastic shrimp and grits. Very good coffee. We were seated in what seemed like a relatively short amount of time, considering the line.
cash only.
you should go here. A bit of a walk from the french quarterish area, but your liver probably needs the exercise at this point, doesn't it? -

Surrey's was delicious, but it didn't have a WOW factor to it.
The best thing about the food was the crispiness of the baguette in the Bananas Foster French Toast. I wasn't impressed with the massive amounts of extremely sweet cream cheese mixed with the bananas, but it wasn't horrible. The sausage and gravy with biscuits were delicious, but Baltimore has it down better. And the breakfast potatoes left my taste-buds wanting more flavour. They were fairly standard and could have used some MMPH.
All in all, a good breakfast place. Would I go there again if I had the chance? Possibly. It's worth another go. -

This was our first Breakfast in New Orleans and after a long walk from the Convention Center District we were hungry!
We ordered Bananas Foster French Toast, hash browns, and Biscuits with Sausage Gravy. Everything was delicious.
The Coffee was bitter but tasted great with cream and sugar.
The Bananas Foster French Toast was SWEET, but paired with another savory dish your splitting with someone else it is delicious. The french toast is made with french bread that is masterfully prepared! The texture was as good as the taste.
The Biscuits and Gravy were delicious. Nice buttery biscuits, a sizable amount of sausage and tasty gravy. This was good but Ive had as good at other places.
Potatoes were....potatoes.
This is in the top 2 best breakfasts I have had in New Orleans. -

This is our go-to breakfast spot when we're back in town. I love the fresh juice offerings and the guac! We brought friends here who wanted to indulge in New Orleans bites. They liked the crab omelet and the bananas foster
french toast. Service is friendly and can be slow, in keeping with the general vibe of the city. I'm sure it's mentioned in other reviews, but for the record: cash only (there is an ATM on premises). -

Wonderful breakfast options - be they on the light side, or for a 'hungry man breakfast'. I enjoyed their Costa Rican eggs with rice. They also have fresh squeezed juices on special each day. The grits have cream in them. Woah baby! And the waitstaff is courteous. Classic Garden District vibe.

Nice. Fresh-squeezed orange juice - now there's a term that can seem like a meaningless, generic description until you get ahold of the real thing... ahhhh! My eggs and grits were perfunctory, crab gratin soupy-but-flavorful, hash browns a little on the chunky side but spicy-delicious. And then there's the Bananas Foster French Toast. If you're not sure it was worth waiting for a table, this won't fail to convince you it was.

Review from Jia J.
DANG. On a quiet spot of the garden district, Surrey's is the ultimate hangover cure and/or pre road-trip fueling station. Sunny and painted in jolly colors, the restaurant feels quite like a NorCal outpost with a suggestion of bayou rather than Pacific fog....minus mean spirited day-tripping Bay Area derelicts and the filth that surrounds them.
Astoundingly enough, there was no line at around 9 a.m., but there were people still raging on from the night before in their now tattered and stained Halloween costumes, mixed in with older couples sitting down to an early meal.
The laminated menus posed quite a dilemma with their stunning variety. The end result was that we ordered enough food to kill two large horses and finished most of it.
I'm glad that I had my first boudin experience here, because even with no basis for comparison, I knew that the fried circlets of rice filled sausage were making history on my palate. Each buttermilk biscuit made from scratch were as large as an infant's face. My shrimp and grits were full of savory rosemary flavor, and my friend's crab omelette was packed with actual crab. The coffee had the same kickass chicory content but was a bit less jolting than what's served up at Cafe du Monde, and that suited us just fine on the particular morning that we were visiting. They were out of grapefruit juice, but made up for it with a fresh limeade that turned my face inside out. In a good way.
Even as I became dangerously full, my eyes darted around, coveting the sweet and salty treats crowded onto other tables.
This is a great place to start the day, but be ready to haul away the remnants of your overambition and carry them with you for pretty much the entire day, because you'll still be full but unable to let the excess food go. -

Shrimp and grits were to die for, good coffee, good biscuits. Don't know if can justify $5 for a small fresh squeezed orange juice, but hey, they gotta make their $ somehow.

this is a great little breakfast spot. local flavor in both the menu items and the interior decor.
Strawberry French Toast is amazing if they have it on the menu! Key Lime French Toast was pretty good too.
fresh squeezed juices are a bit on the pricey side. -

Awesome brunch place! We had shrimp and grits, banana foster toast, and lox on bagel with avocado spread instead of cream cheese. Great fresh orange juice. Great service.
Negatives are that it's a small space and only take cash.
If you are from out of town, make sure you have taxi # handy. -

It's off the beaten path if you're traveling by foot. We were on Magazine Street and did a google search for breakfast spots. I have to admit that there were a couple of blocks that had us second guessing if we should be walking in this area.
Once we sat down we knew we found a gem. The food is to die for. Try the bananas foster French toast. One of my all time favorites!! The all American breakfast (eggs, biscuits, home fries) was also very good.
Give surreys a try. You will not be disappointed!! -

I want to love this place, but I have tried it twice and just can't give higher stars. I have tried the Crab omlette, Caribean Sandwich, and the poached eggs......nothing special. Don't get me wrong, it is good but I feel like the chef is still trying to find their voice.
PRO: The only thing on the menu worth writing about is the butternut squash soup. Nice consistency and I appreciate the spices that were used. This is not a bland soup at all so if you do not like spicy you will not like this.
CON: Really......$5 for a small glass of OJ! I realize that it is fresh squeezed, but come-on! -

Delish!! This place is great for vegans, vegetarians, omnivores, GF and meat eaters alike! The menu has great veggie choices, dishes with rice, and also sweet treats.
Atmosphere & service: Cute district in New Orleans, restaurant is in cool old house with funky artwork. Beware, we got here early on a Sunday and it got very busy very fast. There were many people outside waiting for tables when we left.
Food:
- Juices were great! I had a Carrot-Beet-Ginger-Kale juice and my fiance had the Special: Pear-Apple-Ginger, which was surprisingly good.
- After eating a lot of rich food the night before, I ordered the old fashioned oatmeal with fruit, and wasn't expecting much, but it was amazing! Even my fiance thought so. They cooked fruit (strawberries, banana, apple & raisins) into the oatmeal which gave it great flavor! I feel weird raving about oatmeal, but it was really good.
- My fiance ordered the French toast, which was really french baguette and melted in your mouth. His plate was wiped clean quickly.
I will definitely try to go back the next time I'm in New Orleans! -
Review from Rachel B.
This place is adorable, exactly the type of "local flavor" that I look for when visiting a new city. The decor is cute, the food and juice were great, and the service is friendly. Prices are extremely reasonable. Highly recommended.
They don't do separate checks. -

Best coffee (mild, smooth, awesome) I've ever had, and creative menu.
Really fun atmosphere, too.
Do be prepared to eat and get out - not much of a lingering spot. -

New Orleans, LA
My favorite brunch spot in the city! So far, I've tried several of their breakfast/brunch options, and have been blown away each and every time.
Bananas Foster french toast - stuffed with cream cheese and bananas, topped with banana rum sauce... between bites, all I could think was, "Wow, I really should not be allowed to eat this for breakfast!" So decadent, and so delicious. My favorite on the menu.
Salmon cakes benedict (from a special of the day) - Beautiful and generous flaked salmon cakes, topped with a perfectly poached egg and the best hollandaise I've had outside of Antoine's. Rich and moist, absolutely wonderful.
Salmon and capers omelette - Smoked salmon and cream cheese, with just enough capers to balance it out. I normally detest capers, but I have to admit, they were perfect here.
Cajun Corn Beef Hash - corn beef and potatoes, obviously, but also with andoullie sausage and boudin. Oh my! Don't plan to eat again for a full day after this... so much food, and so good.
*Update 9/27* - Just tried the Crab Omelette from the regular menu... holy smokes. Fluffy eggs, smothered with a creamy crab sauce, stuffed with advocado... amazing! Their homemade biscuits are better than I remembered, and one of these days I'm going to ask how they make those grits so creamy. They just keep on giving me excellent food and service, nothing wrong with that!
The iced coffee is always strong and good quality, and the fresh squeezed juices are nothing short of amazing. Even the sides to the breakfasts, the biscuits and grits, are noteworthy. Friends have ordered the migas, the bagels, and the cuban breakfasts and I'm still hearing about how good they are. I'm eager to get back yet again and try more things on the menu.
Only caveat, they are cash only, but with an ATM inside this is barely a hiccup. I have had to wait 15 or 20 minutes for a table on weekends, but it's beyond worth it. -

New Orleans, LA
Wow, I thought I wrote this review months ago. 2 stars because I did, at one point, enjoy the food.
Anyhoo...
Surrey's:
- always busy so get there early if you have a party of more than 2
- can be hot inside
- minimal service
- normal food, nothing spectacular
- good juices; unfortunately they don't switch the blends very often
- when I was there on my LAST time... they had the host from Hell.
Not only did he continuously give away our table for over an hour but according to him, he didn't want to seat us and he thought it was better to sit smaller parties at the larger table. How is that fair? To add insult to injury, I went in to order juice for a few of my guests while we waited outside and guess what happened... the host STOPPED me and told me no! He proceeded to tell me that they did not do "to-go" drinks... well, that was funny because two people in my party had already got drinks and he didn't say a word.
To make matters worse the host finally told us we should go somewhere else (!!!) because it was 45 minutes before they closed and they weren't going to seat us. Mind you, at this point we had been waiting for close to 1.5 hours. I told him we weren't leaving so he broke our table up into two separate ones (the large table in the restaurant was vacant) that weren't close to each other and we had two different servers. Thanks. -

New Orleans, LA
This place usually has very good food but the portions are on the smaller side and the prices on the higher side. The biggest challenges with dining here are that they only take cash, there is usually a wait to get in (on the weekends), and they are only open for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Service can also be inconsistent and the tables for two are cramped.
I really like the selection of fresh juices and it is one of the very few places you can get a wheatgrass juice shot in NOLA (but it ain't cheap!!!). Granted I'm not a big breakfast person but I do like the sandwiches, fresh juices, and other specials. The fresh quality ingredients are noticeable and substantially add to the flavor and my enjoyment of their food. They have been opening up several other locations that I haven't been to and I've only been to the original spot at 1418 Magazine so I'm not sure what the other locations offer but they could help some of the congestion that has grown up during the weekends for brunch and lunch. This place is especially recommended for those seeking lighter and "healthier" fare that might have burned out on our normally "heavy" traditional creole cuisine. -

At this point, I figured maybe I should have done some more research about this stretch of Magazine st. because there is little to see or be seen. I walked up to the Menu shown outside of Surrey's and as I did, I saw a couple from behind walk pass me heading inside. I saw very little signs of life at this point(aside from a couple Chinese Tourist), so thru the doors I went.
Internally it has aesthetics of Tropical Vacation meshed with old school Cafe/Diner. Waitstaff are fitting of the environment and redeemed ordering mistakes as another Table noticed something wrong. Along side of the wall there are baskets of condiments/napkins hanging. Of course the Louisiana staples were represented; Tabasco, Louisiana and Crystal.
Shrimp & Grits($12.50)
Sauteed Louisiana Gulf shrimp in New Orleans-style BBQ sauce over a bowl of Grits. Garnished with Bacon, Green Onions and French Bread Croutons.
Taste the BBQ sauce. Buttery, creamy, bland. I was surprised to taste the Ground Pepper having more characteristics than the BBQ sauce itself. The Gulf Shrimps were pretty good and the Grits were creamy but when put together it just didn't have enough punch. Now I know why HOT SAUCE is always available, stupid Tourist I know!
I'm just glad there was Bacon because I finished that before even the Shrimp. This Shrimp & Grits portion was quite sizable if you had Plantation labour work to do soon after because you'll need to burn off the calories. For the folks in Canada, Grits taste like a grainy thick consistency Congee. Imagine Seafood Congee with Buttery BBQ Sauce smothered on. :D
More walking to do... Damn, I need a vacation!Listed in: New Orleans August

Located on Magazine St. and off the beaten path a bit, you will find this small eatery a treat!
The menu is crazy! But in every good way possible! They have everything from salads, sandwiches, fresh juices, and of course a great brunch menu! Great vegies options too! I couldn't decide between, well everything, so I ended up getting a great French bread sandwich (not quite a po'boy) with prosciutto (TONS of prosciutto) and a side of cheese grits...now, I am a fan, huge fan, and maybe even an expert on grits...and these were AAAA-MAZING! A trip to ol' NOLA just for those grits would be warranted!
The service was great, considering it was packed! We did have to wait for a while for brunch/lunch, but after grabbing some coffee, my hanger pains subsided.
Cute place, small and quaint, and very New Orleans! Always a plus in my book! -

Learn from my mistakes and don't misread the menu. Get the banana pancake with peanut butter. Don't get me wrong, the HUGE pancake was delicious, but when the server brought me a side of peanut butter, I thought I was going to cry it was so good. It melted a bit and got all gooey and, wow, what a great last breakfast in the Crescent City!
The grits were fine, as was the crab omelette, and the bacon, and the coffee, and the juice.
But trust me on the banana pancake. With peanut butter.Listed in: Brunch, Glutton for Punishment: NOLA…

In a week, we ate breakfast here twice! It was that good and enjoyed by the whole family. I had the breakfast bagel both times and it was a melding of egg, bacon and cheese yumminess. It's a HUGE bagel, so save half for snack!
Kids were thrilled with french toast and pancakes... they were all rich and delicious. :) -

I cannot say enough good things about Surrey's. This is my favorite brunch spot in all of New Orleans. Expect a wait during the weekend; there's a limited number of tables, so the wait can be long.
I've been to Surrey's many times and have never had a bad experience. The staff is always friendly, but not invasive. The food is always amazing. My personal favorite is the banana foster french toast, and I also really enjoyed their special, the stuffed pineapple french toast.
This place is cash only, but there's an ATM in the restaurant. I could honestly eat at Surrey's every day and never get tired of it. Best Breakfast Ever! -

Went here on a Friday morning and it was pretty crowded, but no wait. The food was pretty good and many different types of breakfast foods were available.
I recall the OJ being REALLY expensive, maybe like $5/glass- but it was fresh and tasty!
I'd say my meal was $15 after tip & tax (no OJ)
Cute atmosphere and the tables were lined with newspapers under plexi glass. Pretty cool idea. -

Short & sweet:
Service: 5
Food: 5
Wait time: 5
Price: 5
Cleanliness of bathroom: 3
Um, the food was SO good. The Banana Foster French Toast + Crab Meat Omelette were exquisite. Nevermind that we had actually wanted some Pineapple French toast instead of the Banana Foster and the server made a mistake. The french toast by itself would have been too sweet, however, the omelette balanced it out with its delicious crab meat. The biscuit that came with the omelette was hot and fluffy.... the iced coffee strong and tasty.... our server was friendly and accommodating...
It was the perfect breakfast.
We took the St. Charles Streetcar from the French Quarter area and managed to find Surreys' on Magazine St, all cute and "undiscovered"-like. It was a good fifteen-twenty minute walk from the streetcar stop to the restaurant but it was completely, 100% worth it.
Highly recommended! -

The first time I came here was on a weekend morning with my boyfriend and we were able to get a table within 10 minutes. I got the French toast which was really good but the biscuit I shared with my bf was just ok. He got a sandwich (club maybe?) that he liked a lot.
I came back another time during the week and ordered the special - pumpkin pancake. I really wanted a pancake after I saw someone else eating one the size of a pizza the first time I came. They make one huge pancake and if you could finish it I'd be really impressed. Anyways, the pumpkin pancake was INSANE, they might only serve them in the fall though. It was slightly crispy on the outside, doughy on the inside. They put a slab of a flavored cream cheese on top and syrup topped it all off. This was honestly the best breakfast item I think I've ever had.
I've heard the normal banana pancake with peanut butter is amazing as well. I'll try that next time... unless of course they have pumpkin. -

This place is great! We found it on Yelp and weren't dissappointed. Although we tried not to repeat ourselves, Surry's was within walking distance from our hotel and it was a pretty walk.
We only went there for breakfast but all three times it was perfect. Fluffy scrambled eggs, flakey biscuits, fresh squeezed juice.. but the best was their buttery, creamy grits. I highly recommend them. The service was friendly and quick. No complaints at all. -

I came here a few months ago with high expectations due to all the great reviews but it just fell short. We came during peak brunch hours and it was about an 1hr wait. My group got all the recommended specials from fellow Yelpers and wasn't wowed. It definitely was not worth the wait. There are better brunch options in New Orleans.
