When I walked in here and saw a black woman at the counter not on one, but two occasions, I had to do a doubletake. I'm so used to shops that sell black hair products being owned and served by Koreans (thanks for looking out :)). I half expected an indignant Korean man to walk out and ask why the hell there was a customer behind the counter. But, that didn't happen.
They have a decent selection of human hair, synthetic hair and wigs for people of all colors. They have your Yaki, the Revlon and, of course, the Indian Remy that I like to think is procured from Indian women who go to lovely beauty salons where they are pampered while their hair is shorn for sale to extension loving black women in America. This is much better than the alternative idea I imagine of women being lined up in a dark, dingy warehouse and sheared like sheep, left looking like Sinead O'Connor all for extension loving black women in America.
The staff is courteous, friendly and knowledgeable here - I told them what I was looking for and they were able to find it quickly. They offer a discount for stylists and also have a website where you can purchase their products. Additionally, they carry hair styling products for people of all colors: Roots, Paul Mitchell, Nexxus, Joico, BBD, African Pride, etc.
The shop is in a good location on Ventura Blvd; it's bright, clean and well kept. I'm so happy to have a beauty supply shop in Studio City rather than having to make the trek way across town where the trees become more sparse and the windows become more barred and I almost inevitably get lost.
Don't bother.
I needed to purchase 5 human hair wigs for a production and thought I'd swing by this place due to it's convenient location. I left empty handed when I wasn't acknowledged by any of the staff. I roamed each aisle realizing that I really did need some assistance. I was the only would-be-customer in the store and I counted 3 employees, maybe four-a gal came out of the restroom singing and did smile at me (which was contagious~it made me smile too!). A little more of that and a "How can I help you" & they would have had themselves a sale.
Do you ever wonder how stores like this happen?
Like, did the owner of the store sit in their room as a small child and think, "One day, when I grow up, I'm gonna open the best wig shop in all the land! And I'm gonna open it on a really expensive piece of Ventura Blvd real estate and the masses will come, dammit!" Okay, maybe the kid didn't think the word dammit, cuz i think you have to go through some stuff in life before you use that word properly, but regardless, how did it happen?
How does one decide, I am going to open a wig shop!!?!
I just don't get it, but what you can get here is an amazing assortment of hair pieces, fake ponytails, buns, extensions and everything in between. It's very well organized and the prices seem pretty reasonable to me, but I am no fake hair expert, just an opinionated reviewer with a penchant for oddly themed stores around town.
They also have a ton of beauty type supplies and they are super helpful. Sooo, if you need some hair or wanna perk up your doooo with a little color or you are a Valley-based Drag Queen that doesn't want to deal with Laurel Canyon or the 101 to get over to WeHo, then stop by here and stock up on all of your wig needs :)
