Summer visit...weekday, early evening

Something different to do with the fam bam for sure...

On the positive:
+ Drive thru is a fun novelty
+ Cute retro decor
+ really good dogs

Room for Improvement :
- soggy fries :(
- pricey for fast-food meal, I guess you are paying for the kitsch

A Chicago must!  :)

took me an hour to get here from o'hare because i kept on driving past it, with no good way to turn around!! ugh. but, it was totally worth the stresses of driving to get that perfect no-frills chicago-style dog i'd been craving ever since moving to nyc. i've tried recreating at crif dog, but just got a soggy mess -- key is the whole pickle spear as opposed to chopped and dripping with brine.

add a thick chocolate shake and crunchy fries, you get an artery-busting meal. and the pickled green tomato was the cherry-on-top! yum! prices (and calories) are high, so this is a once-every-couple-years visit for me.

I haven't been here in a while, but I still consider it one of my top three choices in the chicagoland for hot dogs. Everything from the service, presentation, and taste are all done to perfection. I love the decor of the place, the drive in atmosphere, as well as the famous dancing hot dogs on the roof. Every time I come here I always get the whoopski dog. This thing will never get old in my book and will forever rock my world. i love hot dogs.

Old-fashioned drive-up hot dog stand with car service! They take your order over an intercom from your parking spot, and bring it out to hang on your window. No roller skates, but still impressive. Or you can go inside, order from the counter, and sit in the tiny dining room. Good authentic Chicago style dogs, malts, etc. Pretty cheap. Milwaukee Avenue at Devon and Nagle. You can't miss the giant plastic Mr. and Mrs. Superdawg on the roof.

KITSCHY FUN!
Hit Superdawg for a yummy cheap meal and a one of a kind experience. The building itself is so fun. Those famous He and She hot dog figures stand atop the white, black and blue diamond pattern building.

The hotdogs are served Chicago style on a poppy seed bun. The dog rests on a bed of wavy fries. The shakes are to die for as well. This place is sort of in the ass end of nowhere, but worth a trip out. After you get your dogs you can swing by that Leaning Tower of Pisa replica and make an afternoon out of kitschy fun.

Three stars only for their cheeseburger and fish sandwich. If their menu was as simple as Gene & Judes 1 star for them. I could swear their hot dogs and fries are microwaved. Their hot dogs almost seem rubbery from being microwaved and their buns feel like they are droped in water before every hot dog is done. The prices are outrageous what 4.75 for a crappy hot dog and fries, plus the 2$ drink. Kind of sad when a cheese burger with fries is basicly the same price as a hot dog with fries. Over hyped bottom line. I'd take my business to a simple regular Joe hot dog stand I'm sure better food and hell of a lot cheaper. Yet again nothing special about this overly talked about hot dog joint.

HIYA!!
I'm only adding my feedback because I can't believe Superdawg's total rating is not five stars!  This place is a gem of our fair city.  One of the last drive-in eateries there is.

I frequently have dreams of juicy Superdawgs, lovingly caressed by a steamy poppy seed bun, nestled on a bed of crispy crinkle fries.

And have you ever had a Whoopskidawg????  Tell me about it!  A little box of heaven (if heaven were high-cholesterol comfort food).

To all of you that gave this gloriousness anything less than five stars, I ask you:  what is wrong with you???

Solid fast food with a super cute retro feel. Their fish sandwich and root beer float are absolutely delicious and I always have a good time here. Hell, I don't think it's possible to NOT have fun at a drive-in! I can understand why people think the Superdawg's a little on the expensive side, but I personally think it's worth it. It's one of the better hot dogs I've had in the city and it's very filling. However, the fish sandwich is what keeps me coming back! So yummy. Definitely one of my favorite places to hit up when the weather's nice.

Having grown up in the city it's amazing that I have never been to Superdawg.  Granted, I'm a South Side girl and the best dogs were at Poorboys on 46th and Halsted, but I digress.

We came here after seeing it on Chef vs. City just as a cute thing to take the kid to.  I'll say that it's a pretty decent dog.  I personally liked the fries a lot but it seems lots of people here don't.  The tamale is awesome but yes, it's a Tom-Tom knockoff and not something out of your Abuela's kitchen.

The waitresses kind of scare me as they look like they've been working there forever, hate their job and likely spit in your shake as they walk over.  It can be obnoxiously crowded and seriously, the scary red devil eyes on the hot dog caveman dude have to go.

This place is great, I've been there two times (never through the drive-in though, I gotta try that) it's now my neighborhood hot dog joint so I had to try it out. The superdawg is a chi-town style dog (and note to that Eddie guy, Chicago style has the wedge of green tomatoe, no it isn't supposed to be like you thought). The whoopskidog is polish but I didn't get it with BBQ I thought that would be weird (I'll try it next time) crinkle cut fries, nice so complainers, stop complaining, this place is great. But yes it is over-priced but what so ya expect from a place with this much hype? Are you gonna go to Times Square or the Mag Mile and complain that the stores are to expensive?

Look up in the sky!  It's a bird, it's a plane, it's an overpriced, overhyped wiener!  It's Superdawg!

Yes, I get that they've been around forever.  Yes, I get that it's an old school drive in.  Yes, I get that it's a unique dining experience.  But you know what?  I really don't give a shit about any of that.  Bottom line, it's all about the food.  Serve me up a delicious Chicago style dog with fries at a reasonable price, that's all I care about.  But if you're going to hype yourself up, charge me more than double for a damn hot dog, then Superdawg himself better fly in from the sky, thank me personally for my patronage and use his super powers to take one of his own hot dogs and shove it up his superhero ass (hold the sport peppers).

C'mon now, almost $5 for a hot dog and some limp, dry ass crinkle cut fries shoved into a box?!  WTF?!  Almost $7 for a chicken sandwich?!  Double WTF?!  The only reason this place charges so much is to pay for all those fancy containers your not-so-super dog comes in.  I could care less about the cartoon characters plastered all over this joint and all over their packaging.

And all those tourists!  I can see why Superdawg charges so much for their average food.  Hell, if I can make a buck off some tourist or some other sucker by renaming an average wiener in a bun "Superdawg", then I'd probably do it too.

Skip this place if you want really good food.  However, if you have an IQ of less than 70, ride a yellow bus to your house and don't mind giving away your hard earned money for less-than-average food, then by all means come here.  From now on, I'll make it a rule to never dine at a place that would even give Superman himself explosive diarrhea.

Winner, winner, no thanks to your overhyped, overpriced sausage in a bun dinner!

I have been wanting to try Superdawgs on Milwaukee avenue for quite some time now.  Since I have been to Weiner Circle and Hot Dougs.  I wanted to see who has the best dawgs in Chicago.  Sorry to say Superdawgs, but Hot Doug's is still by far the best!  Even though your dawgs were definitely better than Weiner Circle!!

We ordered three superdawgs with everything.  They were really good!  We also ordered one Whoopskidawg.  This is a combination polish and russian sausage of some sort.  It was also really good!  I also ordered a super cheese burger.  This item was not very good, I'm sorry to say.  This is the one item where I enjoyed the burger at Weiner Circle more.  Every item came with fries.  The fries were good but we did not truly need that many fries!

Our total bill came to around $29 dollars.  The wait was long, I guess it takes a while to cook a burger.  Otherwise the wait is fast.  The service was friendly.  Would we go back?  If we are up north and it is after 4:30 pm (when Hot Doug's closes), then yes.  I don't think we would go out of our way though (we would rather head to Hot Doug's), sorry Superdawg!

When I was a young one, driving past this place would drive me into an excited frenzy to see the snazzy hot dogs with light up eyes on top of the drive in. I had no idea where it was, being buckled into a car seat in the back of the car, but oh man my day would be filled with glee each time we drove past it.

Now that I am old enough to drive myself I can simply say that Superdawg breeds the quintessential Chicago hot dog. Not only are the dawgs flavorful and snappy, the size trumps all these other skinny weenies in town. If you like girth, you get a lot for your dollars at Superdawg. And not to forget but your dawg comes paired with pretty amazing crinkle cut fries in a box so cute you will want to save it as a souvenir.   And all hail Maurie and Flaurie, they certainly don't skip on the pickle!

If you are an aficionado of roadside America, a lover of kitsch, and a connoisseur of encased meats, you have to put a trip to Superdawg at the top of your list!

The Good:
+ Carside service
+ Food served in cute little boxes
+ Choc milkshake
+Tasty hot dog
+ Fried onion chips(!!!!!!!) Deeeelicious.

The Bad:
- Their french fries suck!  Limp.  Pale.  Crinkle cut nightmares.  I've been here half a dozen times and each time my fries are served that way.

If you serve dogs, you gotta make some good fries.  End of discussion.

A dawg is $5 but comes with fries.  Cant get it without.  Dogs are top notch, my wife's cheeseburger was only OK.  Fries were decent, nothing special though.  I really liked the dog though.  Chicago dog exactly as you would imagine.  Kind of fun to eat in the car, just glad I didn't get mustard on my shirt.  I guess I could have bought one from them if I had though.  Chocolate shake was phenomenal as well.

I have such mixed feelings about Superdawg. I am not really a fan of the food, except maybe the onion chips, but I keep coming back and I always bring out of town people there. I love the idea of the place and how it reminds me of the way things used to be. I am nostalgic in my old age and this place is the real deal. Of course in my memory, the food used to be a lot better too!!!!

Stopped at Superdawg today. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the excursion, except maybe for the wasps, who are now out in full force. By wasps, I mean the yellow jackets and not our white Anglo-Saxon Protestant friends.

Here is a prime example of how hype and hysteria, prime visibility, novelty signage and clever packaging make this mediocre drive up glorified hot dog stand a booming success.

This clever theme concept provides a good cover for the disappointing food sold here at prices, that in my eyes, are way out of line for nothing special.   It's just a steamed, skinny Oscar Meyer hot dog in a UPS style fancy box.

People wake up....the food here is nothing to write home about to mother!  It's all hype!

After seeing Ralph's World at Old Towne we headed over to the Superdawg for some grub. Never been, but always told it was a top notch dawg place.

It was the warmest of days, in fact it was chilly so that was a bit of a bummer. I still enjoyed the charm of the drive-in none the less. We had a dawg, fries, and a shake. Most impressive was the shake. The dawg was good, but didnt blow me away. Can a hawt dawg even do that??

They only accept cash, no debit or credit cards. If you are in the area I would recommend this place on a hot summers day.

Everyone is always like "Superdawg this, Superdawg that, bla bla bla bla I love Superdawg". Well you know what? Now it's my turn!!

I don't ask for too much in a Chicago style hotdog. First and foremost it shouldn't taste like crap. But that's a given. Nobody likes to eat things that taste like crap, unless they're a fly.

The Superdawg is almost perfect. It holds together well, even though I kept one of the dogs in the box for the drive home, which was about 30 minutes with all the construction traffic. I got it home and the bun was still intact. I hate when hotdog buns split at the bottom. That's a turn off. I almost expected it to be soggy from sitting in that box so long but it wasn't. When I bit into it, it still stayed together. I was delighted.

The dog itself had a good snap, and it wasn't too salty. It had a bit of a smoky undertone, which you don't find very often in a hotdog. I think this is one of the aspects of the Superdawg that set it apart. The fries that come with the dog leave much to be desired. They're peppery and taste better than the average greasy fry, but they were a bit inconsistent. Some were chewy, some were crunchy. I'm not going to judge Superdawg french fries, though, since the real attraction is the hot dog. That's what they're there for, and they do it excellently.

Those shows that come on late at night on the Travel Channel when you're hungry. They talk about hotdogs, and they always have to show Superdawg, with the anthropomorphic hotdogs on the roof and the carhops. They're right. This is a damn good hot dog.

Hello, FOOD SNOB HERE.  Living in NW Indiana, I do not get up here to often.  But I'm glad I went out of the way ,and it was out of the way.  Seen the two big dogs on TV. Hot Dog Paradise.  Usually when you eat a dog you taste everything on it.  The meat in this hot dog was bigger and jucier.  Truely a great taste.  You are able to taste the meat more than the trimmings.  If you have bad fries with a hot dog or burger it ruins the meal.  Here the fries are excellent.  They look like White Castle fries but taste 10 times better.  Use your imagination now.  This is also truley a blast from the past.  One of those last of its kind places.  If you love hot dogs this is a must!!

I am not a hot dog fan, but I have to say the superdawg is a super treat.  It may very well represent the pinnacle of what can happen on a hot dog bun.  Poppy seed buns, flourescent relish, sweet and spicy peppers, quality franks. . .get the 'furter outta here. . .Nathans (Coney Island) or Pinks (Los Angeles) can't hold a candle to this place.

Just have to add my two cents to the hundreds of others. This place is different - it still has "car hops." They serve a generous sized dog on a poppyseed bun, covered w/crinked fries, a great tasting pickle and a green tomato, all tucked neatly into a box. Gotta love the neon green relish! The vanilla shake gets 5 stars. Glad we thought of it while cruising up Milwaukee Ave.

I thought I would be super awesome and drive my boyfriend on a late night dawg date. What a bummer. The hotdogs were not very good at all. Maybe we came on an off night but I would rather stand in line at Hot Doug's for five hours than eat at Superdawg .

Here's where I got really sad. My banana split was gross. How do you even do that?  How can a banana split taste so gross that a person can hardly eat it? And I was soooo excited to eat that banana split. I've only had one other bad banana split in my entire life and that was at a creepy broken down DQ somewhere outside of Memphis and that was my fault because that place had nasty written all over it in bold face print. This is the cutest hot dog stand in the world but it's pretty sad when the best thing about a restaurant turns out to be the postcards.

I've tried many a hamburger and many a hot dog in my life, but nothing ever compares to a superdawg and a superburger.
This place is not just a restaurant, it's also an experience. everytime i go here, I still see tourists taking pictures in front with the big hot dogs on top of the building.

This is like a step out of time with their car side service. the food delivers everytime. The fries are delicious the food is always perfect and the atmosphere is great. I've been going here for almost about 20 years, and can't have one bad thing to say about this place.

It's definately one of the must visit restaurants in Chicago

Husby and I kicked at old school at the Dawg a couple weekends ago.  It was already packed around the time they opened on a Sunday, and we were just able to cruise on into one of the last available spots.

Are the dogs overpriced?  You betcha.  The service kinda slow?  Uh huh.

Still, I heart the retro vibe of ordering from a drive up and having someone bring a tray of goodies that attaches to the side of my car.  I kinda wish she was on rollerskates, but I got over it.

Oh, and crinkle cut fries!  BOOYA!

I really like this place.  Yes it's not the best hot dog I've ever had but it's pretty good and it's a fun ambience.  Park yourself at one of the menu stations and wait for someone to ask you for your order.

I love the supercheesie, superdawg and the superveggies. Don't love the fries as much.  The superveggies are tasty and the corn one is the best!  The Superdawg has this pickled green tomato that serves as a nice twist to the normal "chicago-style" dog.  No ketchup anywhere in sight near my dog and that's a good thing.

Love to come here in the winter because I don't have to get out of my car!

Don't believe the hype.

Yeah it's famous, but when you get down to it superdawg is an average chicago hot dog and fries you can get anywhere else in the city.  The only difference is that you pay twice the price here.

Honestly I'm a little surprised that there aren't any five star reviews at the top of this page, so I'm fixing that now!

I LOVE Superdawg. I've been going here with my family and friends for as long as I can remember, and it's always amazing. Sometimes the wait is long, but it's always worth it.

This place is a drive in, not a drive thru. You park next to a speaker and push the button to order, then when they bring the food out, they have you roll down your window so they can perch the tray on that. This can be problematic if it's particularly windy out, but it really only affects the napkins so just suck it up and put them in the car instead! When you're done, flip a switch and they come out to take the tray and your money.

They have one of my favorite hot dogs ever here, and I've never found one like it anywhere else, though everyone is always shocked when I order it without anything on top... but everything else distracts from the hot dog I love so dearly, so it must be done. The fries are also fantastic, never soggy or too greasy, though they do need salt.

Not that I ever have room left over, but for an extra treat with your meal, get the Blackkow (root beer float)... though you might want to share it so you don't explode!

Whoa.. I never reviewed this place.. Of all the times I've been here I think I've been blinded by the fact that this place has been around for forever to me..

While the hot dogs are really good (one of the best in the city) I just can't say that this place is as good as it gets as of late..

It seems like the last couple of times for service it's been pretty lacking.. We waited 30 minutes for a hot dog and it was pretty bad that another car was served before us when we arrived 20 minutes before. That was just the last time I went there.. It wasn't even a busy time of the night..

Sorry Superdawgs... I am a fan, but I do know that there is better out there..

Finally made it to Superdawg. My brother-in-law in town from LA asking me what a Chicago-style hotdog really was (AND Hot Doug's being closed for most of October) gave me the excuse to go.  I panicked when I saw the menu.  I had myself and 2 kids to feed.  So what did I do? Get 2 Hot Dogs, a Cheeseburger and a chicken finger dinner.  It was way overkill, especially since the chicken was not good at all.
The hot dogs were great.  Just great.  I wanted regular tomato to be strict, but the pickled tomato was interesting, even if you couldn't eat it off the hot dog.
The burger has made a lot of lists around town.  I was underwhelmed.  It is good, but standard.
The fries are crinkle-cut fatties and outstanding.
The drinks come in those waxed paper cups that start to feel like they're going to collapse within a few minutes, but both my brother-in-law and I thought they were remarkably tasty.  The fountain mix must have been perfect.

Those wieners are freaking me out!! Those evil glowing eyes and wicked smiles, it's the stuff nightmares are made of.

Superdawg and I go way back into the 80's which is still around 30 or so years after they opened (which was 1948). As a kid it was a big treat to pull into the drive-in (not to be mistaken with drive-thru), order from the box (though it would have been cooler to have an actual Carhop came out to take my order), our food delivered, and then eat it in the car. How good the food was to me as a child. Flash forward to now and now Superdawg gives me those childhood memories with every bite. It still has that old school feeling just not the old school prices anymore. All the classic fatty goodness you could want in a hot dog joint. It's hit or miss on the food sometimes but it will always be that favorite childhood place... even though those glowing eyes still freak me out!! Sometimes an eye starts blinking like it's a short or something but then it stops or it's just me... which is sooo not cool!!

Well, the dancing dogs made me laugh.....(especially at 12:30 am) after a cubs game!  We made the trek, and since it was so late, had the luxury of standing there looking to make up my mind without someone looking over my sholder.  Went with the Superdawg, and a root beer float....the fries were ok...(could have been much better), and WHAT is with the neon green relish?  It tasted ok, but looked kinda funky..lol

The hot dawg was great, you could tell the quality and had it not been soooo late, I would have had another!  Maybe the onion chips would have been a better choice....and hubby LOVED his T-shirt...

Superdawg is another one of those "Chicago Institutions" as far as hot dog stands go, but I am sure everyone knows that it is so much more.

For starters, Superdawg is an interesting but dying breed of restaurant: The drive in. If you don't know, the procedure is simply driving up to a stall, placing your order through an intercom system, and wait for it to be delivered on a tray by a carhop.

But the thing that keeps me coming back every time is the Superdawg itself. Snappy, juicy, and piled high with first rate condiments like every Chicago dog ought to be, but this isn't some run of the mill Vienna Beef sausage that is typically elsewhere. Instead, Superdawg has always used custom made hot dogs, but they taste as good, if not better, than any other hot dog I have ever had.

The fries are decent, though honestly mostly an afterthought that are often packed too tightly into the box with your superdawg. I would personally prefer it if they left the fries optional as it would make ordering their hot dogs in bulk more feasible.

Still, if you are in the mood for a Chicago Dog done right, look no further than Superdawg.

Sorry SuperDawg but you don't compare to other great Chicago hot dog joints.  This place is seriously overrated.  Yes, the dogs on the top of the building are cool and it is an "old school" establishment but their food is nothing special.   They are WAY over priced for what you get, especially their milk shakes, what a joke ($5 for a tiny cup of nothing!?!?).

My suggestion:

Head down to Jim's on Maxwell, Hot Doug's, Vienna Beef Factory or even Costco's food court to get a better hot dog and save your gas and the environment (does everything have to come in a box?).

A quintessential Chicago-style hot dog.

The only departure from tradition is a tomatillo instead of a tomato wedge.  But otherwise it's the Chicago-style hot dog done the way a Chicago-style hot dog should be done.

I waffled. I am not sure if this is quite a 5-star joint. It may be 4.5 stars. Consider me still waffling.

Still, I am glad to cross Superdawg off our Places to Visit list. We took a friend who was in town for the weekend so he could have his first-ever Chicago hot dog.

A few things you should know just in case you're visiting for the first time: it's cash only (there's an ATM), you can park and either go up to the window or order from your car, and if you go to the window, you should be paying attention.

So yes, it's a bit kitschy, and not the cheapest hot dog stand around, but it IS mighty tasty. The dogs are big, meaty and flavorful, with nice soft squishy buns; I liked the pickled green tomato and the pickle spear was nice and hearty too. The fries are a little overdone, but in a tasty sort of way.

And we shared a Pineapple SuperSoda, which was fizzyness, pineapple juice and ice cream. Sugar heaven, but quite tasty.

This is probably the sort of place we would take out-of-towners, as it's not super-convenient to home, but it was fun, a very good dog, and good to scratch off our list. :)

Ok I finally did it. I went to Superdawg. After seeing it on countless food/travel shows I went out of my way to stop and I'm glad that I did. It was a little hard to get to being on some oddball corner. One other thing this place in TINY. It looked way bigger on TV. I'm not a big eater and I don't usually order french fries, so at most places a couple dogs are about right. Big mistake at Superdawg. I realized my error after I ordered and saw everyone else order just one.  I didn't know they came with fries and the dawgs are huge. Oh well. After sitting down in the dining area I notice a huge spatter on the window in front of me. I thought that was kinda gross, but went on my way. So I open the box to find a tomatillo wedge, yum I thought and I bit in to it and it squirted all out the side and on to the window.....huh...must be a common thing. So I taste the dog and it was great. Fresh, hot and a flavor of dawg I've never had before. So I bite in to my hot pepper and it squirted too. (they really need to fix this squirting issue). I try to finish the second one and just can't do it. If I'm in the area again, I'm heading back.
