LOVE this place.  Not for the service, or the atmosphere, but the FOOD.  And let's face it--that's what matters most anyway.

Beef noodle soup = delish.  Spicy beef noodle soup = not for the faint of stomach.  I love spicy, and could barely handle the heat on this one.  Loved it.  And continue to love it, again and again and again.  I'm just dreading the day that this becomes too popular to get a seat.

The first time I tried Super Taste, I was worried that it wouldn't live up to the hype. My worries were unfounded - the spicy beef noodle soup was one of the best things I've eaten, ever. Now, every time I go, I worry again that their food will have gone downhill - how can a dish be so consistently perfect? But it is.

The noodles are sproingy (yes, that's a word, in my book), the broth is deeply flavored, the beef and greens are tender. This is no-nonsense satisfaction, and it comes cheap.

These noodles are tasty , good deal for the price- got the spicy beef while my parents got the seafood- it's all basically the same broth with different toppings- except the spicy broth is... spicy- personally I think the regular brother without the spice is kinda bland but that's because I love spicy food

What was better than the noodles in my opinion were the dumplings, they were bomb.

A true chinese restaurant: people slurping loudly, discarded bones on their tables, and obnoxious shouting.  The spicy beef noodles ($4.75) were fantastic: lots of meat, plenty spicy, and a very good sized bowl.

Don't know why people like this place.

The broth lacks flavor, ingrdients are low quality, and service is bad.

yes I have had other hand pulled noodle soups before, and no I didn't really favor them. I stood/sat corrected in the tiny restaurant. All I remember of my experience is shivering as the door opened and closed with bustling, slurping customers, with the temp being 24 deg outside. But is was all good cause the soup was hot and tasted real good. Had the no 5 and I think 9 or 11. (It was the one with mustard root in it) That one sounded strange but didn't taste it, actually my favorite of the two.

I say go, in the spring.

Wow, one of the best noodle soups I have ever tasted.  I devoured their beef noodle with house special soup and it was fantastic, oh so flavorful. Had them make it spicy, of course.  I dont know what they use to make that broth. The juicy dumplings stood out as well. They were kind of like a mix of xiaoloanbaos and wontons. I actually bought a bag of them home.

Big bowls of steaming noodle soups served in a hole-in-the-wall joint where the staff scream your order back to the kitchen with an ear pitching bark.. Needless to say this is almost as no-frills as it gets but it's not pretending to anything different. Noodle soup is the only thing that's interesting about this place and whilst it's not my personal fav the broth was tasty. If it's cold outside and you have $5 you can't go too far wrong.

Noodles are good. The broth is clean, not overly salty, and light even though it looks like it would be heavy and dense. $4.75 for the mixed beef bowl. Tax included.
Yep, bowls arrive in plastic but that's because if you can't finish it, they'll give you a lid and bag to take home with you.
Bathroom is in the back, through the kitchen.

...Have you ever had the feeling of finding what you truly wanted, exactly when you wanted it?

Well the contents of my experience included: an intoxicating rich beefy clear broth, fresh green spinach and.. hand pulled noodles, These noodles were fresh chewy al dente goodness. It was perfection.

It was the best Lanzhou broth noodles i've ever had.

i've decided that i'm going to celebrate winter by coming here.

i got the spicy beef noodle soup and it was everything a noodle soup should be. delicious non msg broth. springy thin noodles. soft beef. vegetables. mmmmmmmmmmm

i was a little creeped out by the all plastic utensil ware, but i guess it's for practicality. place is tight, so you may end up sharing a table.

when i went, all the other patrons asked for the spice packet bags. i really wanted to figure out what it was, but couldn't find the right wds in mandarin. any one have any idea what's in the packet?!

$3 for a large plate of delicious dumplings. Best breakfast I have had in a while. Minus one star because it took about 15 minutes to get the food. Also an annoying woman (the waitress?) would occasionally SCREAM back to the chefs. It was awkward but perhaps authentic. Delicious dumplings and great price.

Returned recently, and they seem to have made things a bit more English-friendly, which made me a bit disappointed. It's still a hole on the wall and the clientele is still mostly Asian, but the prices have went up a bit (nothing major at all, fear not) and it seems less mysterious and questionable than before. That being said, the food is still amazing. Thank goodness!

Let me set the record straight. These noodles are cheap and good, but not great. I ordered the #1 of mixed beef and a side order of steamed dumplings.
The Oxtails are cut in cross sections that are 1/8 thick. They have a not so fresh taste and are quite chewy. I would think they would want to use whole ox tails to help make their soup broth since they are the BEST for soup, and the meat would become tender and succulent, but it isn't so.
The sliced beef is tender and yummy. Their beef stew pieces are really good (I will get the beef stew noodle next time). The tendons are big and gummy (This is a good thing).
The noodles are plentiful and good. They are not quite as dense and chewy as I would like, but still very good.
There is another strange thing about this place. All the meats are cold so when they put your soup noodles together, the noodles are piping hot, but the cold meats cool the broth down. So warm broth and hot noodles is weird. I want HOT broth and noodles.
The Dumplings are pretty good too. I think there were 10 large dumplings for $3. I am partial to dumplings so you make your own choice here.
Two of us left super full from two bowls of noodles and dumplings for $16.  Real cheap.

Super Taste is super good. It just took the crown for Best Chinatown Dumplings away from Vanessa's Dumplings (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in my book. Their dumplings and noodles remind me of home cooking, and I was completely stuffed from my meal without that sick-from-excessive-amounts-of-oil feeling. The dumplings, chock full of chives and ground pork, were made with thin skins (most dumpling houses in the neighborhood use thick doughy skins), and the spicy beef noodles with mustard greens were light and hearty at the same time. I also got the fish balls, which were filled with ground meat and came bobbing in a broth. Great place for a cheap, delicious meal during these economic hardships!

Perfect al dente noodles. Perfect flavorful broth that's not too salty, not too greasy. Also, the steamed dumplings (sui jiao) are excellent and served ten on a plate. This is a great place to go for a cheap, delicious winter meal. Try to finish everything in your bowl, though, because hand-pulled noodles don't keep their chewy texture as leftovers.

I arrived at this Lanzhou Noodle location unintentionally, when I was looking for some quick food before my Chinatown bus' departure (AA Bus, cheap and efficient) in 20 minutes. The restaurant was not big, with about 4-5 tables, and there were about 4 what looked like to be Chinese illegal immigrants eating and slurping, trying to fill their stomachs before their shifts began.

The moment I stepped, a young female, perhaps a waitress or perhaps the owner, yelled at me quickly in Chinese. I didn't catch what she said for a second, then realized she said "what do you want?". I said "Oh!" and quickly looked at the Chinese-only menu on the wall and opted for a spicy beef noodle plus a serving of dumplings.

(Lanzhou Beef Noodle: http://en.wikipedia.or... , this is the original product of which the Japanese Ramen was a poor and incomplete derivative.)

While I waited, I noticed a huge electronic "clock" on the wall, with displays of day, month, year, time, minute, calendar. It was apparently made from an Electronic University in Shenzhen, China.

The noodle came in a plastic bowl - hot and spicy-looking. I picked up a pair of disposable chopsticks and dug in. The noodles were well pulled, tender but with enough elasticity, beat the Japanese Ramen handily. The beef was of a good cut, probably from the leg, with a good mixture of lean and fatty meat. The soup was strong, spicy, and had the familiar aroma of cilantro. The bowl looked not so big when it was handed to me, yet there was surprisingly more noodle and beef inside than I initially anticipated, delivering enough spice and chewiness to my stomach to make a complete meal in itself (unlike the Japanese Ramen, of which a typical healthy male eater needs to order 3 servings just to be full ).

The 6 steamed dumplings came on a plastic plate when I had almost emptied my bowl. Each one was plump, and full of meat and chives. They even came with a separate container filled with dipping sauce (a mixture of soy sauce and garlic), very considerate. The dipping sauce was not strong enough, so I added a few drips of vinegar, and suddenly it became full-bodied, perfect for injecting an extra layer of flavor into the skin and meat of the dumplings.

Overall cost of the meal was $7.50, and I was beyond full. For one person with a small appetite, a bowl of noodle is enough for a meal. For 2 people, I recommend getting two bowls and sharing one serving of dumplings.

Oh no, my Chinatown bus is leaving! I ran out the door, down Eldridge Street, turned right on East Broadway, and luckily boarded the bus just as it was about to depart.

Pros: Great, broth, springy noodles, recession price meal and fast service.

Cons: Plastic utensils (including bowls!), cheap decor and small menus.

That still doesn't trump the fact that this is a great tasty meal for $5 with change! I will definitely come back.

After seeing hand pulled noodles in New York being featured on either the travel network or the food network... I can't really remember, I finally decided to do a yelp search.  Two places seemed to be the cat's pajamas.  Super Taste and Lan Zhou, both of which are pretty close to each other.  Having never had hand pulled noodles before, I figured I'd reserve my judgment (and my review) after trying both.

I first had Lan Zhou, and I was pretty awe-struck by the coolness of having them literally hand pull the noodles right next to you (not sure how this affects any health codes, but we didn't care, it looked awesome).  I ordered the standard(?) beef and noodle soup and my fiance ordered the beef tripe noodle soup, in addition to an order of pan fried dumplings.  Taste?  It was good, not mind-blowing by any stretch though.  Cost? Dirt cheap.  But then, the tiny counterspace and plastic everything certainly keeps the cost low.

Anywho, I am reviewing Super Taste right? Right.  So we go in and the first thing we notice is there's no english to be found written anywhere.  And I don't see any dood pulling those noodles!  Perhaps he's hidden away in the back.  Then the waitress comes up to us and speaks to us in Chinese first (we're Asian, it's fair).  So once we get the English menu's (folded paper) we all order the hot n spicy beef noodle soup and an order of dumplings.

My bowl comes first.  Yowza, that's one big plastic bowl.  Dig my chopsticks into it and, wow, this thing is FULL of noodles, and a very generous amount of beef.  Dip my plastic soup spoon in, fill it with a little broth, a few strands of noodles... and... OooO MAN.  Fantastic. The broth was the perfect amount of spicy (I'm Thai, so it's got kick, believe me) and not ridiculously salty.  And the noodles? Texture-wise, a lot better than Lan Zhou, but the noodles also appeared to be perfectly sized here, where at Lan Zhou, every noodle seemed to be of a different thickness, something I witnessed as the chef pulled the noodles there.

Okay, so maybe they don't really hand-pull the noodles... but really, for $4.75 for a sizable amount of food, and tasty food at that, I'm not about to file a false advertisement complaint.

On a side note, I did find it a little offensive that all of the other patrons, who were all speaking in Chinese, were constantly looking over at our table with a look of disdain as we spoke, very loudly, in English.  That bothered me a little, but whatever, I get that in LA too.  c'est la vie.

Delish!

cheap: check
good: check

only bad thing is that it is hard to find parking, a total hole in the wall and they serve it to you in take out bowls and wet chopsticks.

BUT who can beat the price for the delishness of the food!

Had spicy beef noodle soup and dumplings... wayyyy too much food.

must try pork bone? next time. saw some guy chowing down and wanted to sample his bowl.

try it!

Ah.  Pulled noodles and pork bone and pickled mustard greens.  I could get lost in your eyes tonight, Super Taste.  The walls could be blacked with soot and there could be an inch of standing water on the floor, and I'd still likely not care about decor or atmosphere.  Here, finally, is a place where one may eat well and abundantly in New York's bronze medal Chinatown.

Very good, though I did hear two collegians talking about the difficulty of choosing which God to look for last time I was in.  Extensively and loudly.  Genuflect at the altar of spicy beef and pork bone and save your God talk for the dorm.  Or tenement.  Or rented closet.  Or wherever you students are living nowadays.

I'm a huge fan of this place. I always get the spicy beef noodle soup and an order of steamed dumplings. I love plopping the pickled mustard greens and always add a fried egg.  You know, just 'cuz.

I think I like the yelling. Plus, the lady that is usually working the front kind of loves me because I speak Chinese. I think that the hole-in-the-wall-y-ness is appealing to me. Everything doesn't always have to be so fancypants to be good. Plus, it's cheap as hell. What do you expect, a tufted satin chaise?

Yesterday I came here and had the la wei niu rou shou la mian (spicy beef noodle soup). The noodles here are all hand-pulled... and you know they are hand-pulled because the entire time you sit in there either waiting for your bowl of noodles or eating, you can hear the cooks in the back of the tiny restaurant slamming the noodle dough every minute or so.

Service is very rushed, but the waitress/hawker/dish clearer was surprisingly friendly with me (I usually don't expect this at cramped Chinese noodle shops). Prices are really cheap, too. They even have a board (only in Chinese, though) of economic recession specials, like beef stew over rice, lamb over rice, etc. The waitress understands a little English if you don't speak Chinese (all the dishes they offer - she'll know), so don't be scared if you don't speak any Chinese.

The spicy beef noodle soup had a very generous portion of beef -- chewy, but not terribly tender. The noodles were pretty evenly pulled -- they looked so uniform that I'd never have guessed they were hand-pulled.

The spicy beef soup itself wasn't that flavorful, though -- just really really hot. I was near tears from the heat and had a table-full of tissues from blowing my nose at the end of the meal.

Next time I come here, I'm planning to get the tong gu noodles (pork bone with preserved veggies noodle soup). EVERYONE was ordering this.

You can't say this place isn't authentic. It's a tiny hole in the wall with shouty and brusk service; things are exactly as they should be. Also when I was there, there was a whole tour eating lunch there straight from China and I actually heard the tour guide say these noodles are just like the what you'd get in the Mainland.

That being said I wasn't really blown away, authentic is fine but we're still talking about a pretty utilitarian blue collar food in China. The chewy and tasty hand pulled noodles were noticeably better than the regular stuff you'd find. However the broth and the fixins didn't really add all that much for me.

I got the house noodles or #1 on the menu, pretty much a grab bag of everything they've got. I liked it in the end, I think I'd go back if I'm in the area, wouldn't come down for this place alone though.

I was skeptical when my friend brought me here because of the kooky restaurant name, but now I'm a believer. :-) Super Taste indeed!

Pros:
1) Spicy beef noodle soup - the noodles are homemade and the broth is spiced just right. Perfect to eat during a cold day in the city.
2) Savory steamed dumplings-- these have to be my favorite dumplings in the city. Incredibly flavorful and delicious!

Cons:
1) Small space
2) Beef in soup is super fatty and a little tough. But whatever-- it's all about the noodles for me anyway!:-)

We browsed the offerings, then settle on the spicy beef and the oxtail hand-pulled noodle soup.  Both meat toppings--spicy beef and the oxtail--were thin cut and pedestrian; in flavor and texture.  I would prefer a thicker cut with oxtail.  The greens were overcooked.  But we were there for the star of the show, the hand-pulled noodles.  If that was good, all the mediocre accoutrements would be overlooked.  Our hopes were dashed.  The texture and taste did not deliver against our expectations.  We found it bland and a tad too soft.  The soup base for the spicy beef was good, but great noodles bowls are not judged on soup base alone.

BEST HAND-PULLED NOODLES IN NYC! I just removed the crown from Lan Zhou and bestowed this accolade onto thee. The madame here is a super badass, as she screams out orders faster than the micro machines man. Her super annoying voice is enough to make the most patient person choke a bitch. Thank goodness for the air conditioning here that makes the wait worthwhile. I think the secret is out though as I saw a few non-Chinese people eating here as well. Must try Sheng Wang across the street to compare now. For no wait, arrive past 2pm.

Ordered:
-Hand-pulled beef noodle soup ($4.50) - Badass super chewy hand-pulled noodles make you dream about them for days. The beef is sliced 1/8" thin like a cold cut but with cartilaginous goodness intertwined. You have to ask for the packed of pickled mustard (a bit dry but whatever) if you want this dish to SING!
-Boiled Pork & Chive dumplings (10/$3) - very chivy, just the way i like it, comes with a sweet chili oil that is TO DIE FOR!
-Poland Spring water bottle ($1) - now that's high quality h20!

Total came out to $5/pp after everything. Yes, I left a tip.

I'm SUPER...thanks for asking..That you are. Roq awn with your bad self.

T emailed me last minute and asked if I wanted to come here before T zooms away on a business trip.

Since T and I totally misses each other when we don't see each other for a long period of time.  Well at least I hope T does as much as me!
=OP

So of course I said YES since I was experiencing T withdrawal...haven't seen T for over two weeks or perhaps it was just a week but it seriously felt longer!

Okay this review is not about T but about Super Taste!

E and I usually go home together but I advised I have to meet T for dinner.
E asked where and I said Super Taste but I told E I never even heard of this place before.
E said SHOCKER since I am a total Foodie!

After T and I walked over there - I discovered the reason why I never heard of this "restaurant" before.  It's a hole in the wall place and I wouldn't even call this place a restaurant.

This place is filled with ASIANS only!  I guess it's a good sign if you're going to get Asian food.

T and I sat down and both got the Spicy Beef with hand pulled Noodles.  I was excited to see they were hand pulled but they're not the version that I was hoping for.  I like the big fat type of noodles but these were the small ones.

*sigh*

The noodles were good but I didn't get to eat any of the hefty loads of meat that they put in each bowl.  I don't know the specific name for this meat but it's the meat that are sliced thinly with a thin zig zag lines of transparent areas.

But I love the spiciness of the broth and so no need for any extra flavouring.

We saw this guy that was sitting next to us that was gnawing on some mixed beef.  He looked like he LOVED it.  But the way he was eating it totally makes you loose your appetite.

P.S   They don't have real silverware...everything is PLASTIC even the soup spoons!  More waste added to this polluted Earth!

I really didn't like this place.  I honestly wanted to because I love nothing more than a ridiculously cheap meal in Chinatown but this was just... well, gross.  The broth of my soup smelled and tasted faintly of cat litter.  No amount of Sriracha could save it.  The flimsy plastic bowl it came in was not helping the situation either.  Nor the plastic utensils.  There are just so many other places in Chinatown doing the same thing and far better that I would recommend skipping out on this one and trying some place else.

A little out of the way, and a walk from the the subway.  There is an English menu on the door now.  At lunchtime, the place was packed and there was a line out the door.  Fast service, tasty and simply prepared food, and REALLY inexpensive.  Worth the walk, if you can survive the carbohydrate coma to walk back to your train, instead of collapsing somewhere on Canal Street and being trampled by school children.

"Get ready for some divey good noodles," my Chinese friend told me about Super Taste.

The key is to go into this place with low expectations.  I knew I was going in for a no-ambiance, noisy service, cheap eats experience and was completely satisfied with my meal.  I ordered the #2 noodle soup with beef and while I enjoyed the springy texture of the hand-pulled noodles, they were a bit of a challenge to grasp with my poor chopstick skills (I'm a bad Asian, what can I say.)

As others mentioned, the staff can get rowdy but for a meal under $5, I really can't complain.

After the excesses of partying it up in NY and Thanksgiving, I acquired a wicked cold. The previous week had been full of cold, crisp, and sunny weather; I suppose that it was fitting that it was raining on my day of departure.

I needed a relatively fast meal that was open by 1030am on a Sunday and one that would chase away my horrible cold and the gloom outside. We had stayed up too late the night before and woke by 8am to start packing up the manfriend's apartment. It didn't help that he was also plagued by the cold. Ramen had been my original plan to soothe our scratchy throats, but it would be impossible to make it there after their 11am opening and back to get us to our separate airports in time. So off to Super Taste for our farewell (for the time being) to NY meal.

We both ordered the hand-pulled noodles w/ beef in hot and spicy soup ($4.75 each) and hot and spicy it was. I was a tad concerned b/c I like all sorts of tendony, offally bits and pieces in my soup but not everybody does. I was relieved that the cut of meat seemed acceptable for the paler palates too. We also asked for an order of dumplings ($3 for 10)  that were of the basic steamed pork and chive persuasion. The dumplings arrived after our soups and were ok but not great. Everyone has their go-to dumpling place around here, but we were there for the noodle soup. The noodles themselves were more regularly formed than others that I've had and were plenty toothsome. The broth was deeply beefy, spicy, and what the cold needed.

There are no pretensions at Super Taste, soup bowls and spoons are disposable plastic and chopsticks are disposable bamboo. There are a handful of spartan formica tables in the small room. The counter overlooks the kitchen which is full of giant simmering pots of all manner of chicken and pork parts. The sounds of the kitchen and the somewhat gruffly shouted orders (in Chinese) are familiar to me and remind me of the types of places that I would or could visit with my dad. Other than that, the dining room is quiet aside from the sound of a lot of noodle slurping.

It was a blustery and cold day when I came to this great little hole-in-the-wall.  From the outside, its orange awning, slightly faded, is very unassuming.  And as I sat down inside, you could smell the wonderful broth cooking in the back, hear the clangs and shouts of the waitresses and the cooks, and see that this place isn't about impressing you with service or decor (as a matter of fact, tables are communal style only).  No, this place is definitely all about the food, and I'll have to say that I'm quite impressed.  I've had spicy beef noodle soup in many different places, ranging from Hong Kong to Flushing, Queens, to Vancouver, Canada, and all over.  But I just can't believe I've never come across this spot in all my time in New York.

The noodles are appropriately toothy, the beef round and tendons are tender and intense, and the soup was spicy enough that while it did make me sweat a lot, it was also very flavorful.  In some cases, I've had dishes where the hot peppers/chili oil/what-have-you just overwhelmed the dish to the point of being inedible.  But this place's touch (and price!) was just right.  The fact that there are more Asian patrons in this place and Chinese phrases flung about than English should make you run, not walk, here.

I was introduced to pulled noodle soup by way of the lan zhou noodle place on east broadway but I needed to try Super Taste for a good comparison.

This joint is better than Super Taste in that it has more seating available than Lan Zhou and the noodles are slightly (just a tad) more springy but overall I prefer the broth at Lan Zhou more. I also found the steamed dumplings here to be a little thicker than those at Lan Zhou. I regretted getting the house special soup because it was full of tendons, other gelatanous meats and tripe-should have stuck to the regular beef noodle or spicy noodle for sure.
